Ratings and Scheduling: Who's the fairest of them all?

I think this may be the first time I've been disappointed to hear that a show I like is being renewed. On the upside, at least we'll have an ongoing excuse to hang out here together and this forum will probably stay alive longer.

Is it too much to hope for new showrunners...

Probably.

Great to hear its renewed! Don't mind that there are big changes. I think we've prepared ourselves for that. Frankly changes need to be made to make it fresh.

Regardless of how you feel, I'm glad you all will be back with me debating this ridiculousness again next year at this time.

Boo! to Netflix. A few years back, I remember reading that OUAT was one of the most watched shows on Netflix. I wonder if that still holds (hard to believe) and that's why they backed it.

I know overseas the new episodes we get on Sunday, get uploaded during the week on Netflix.

Well Netflix does seem to promote it overseas, particularly with Netlfix UK and Ireland. I just didn't realize they were making that much money off of it. Interesting. I guess this is another sign of the times that Nielsens aren't what they used to be when it comes to renew or cancel. I also wonder if there were some other things involved there. Netflix is making lots of Marvel shows. Perhaps picking up Once greased some Marvel wheels as well?

I don’t know what to say. On one hand, I’m happy my favorite show is continuing, but on the other, the natural ending for the show is Sunday’s episode. I will probably continue to watch, but it won’t be the same.

Neither will I. I'll still hang out in the forums too but I can't watch. All of the characters I like and/or love are gone except Hook. I just can't watch Hook without Emma. I know I can't sit through even more Rumple and Regina.

With how the ratings had dropped and the gamble of the reboot, I am surprised they ordered a full season at the outset.  I thought they might have ordered ten or so and then extended it if things were going well.  I suppose they can always cut back if it ends up being a train wreck.

It sounds from reports that it will be a full 22-episode season. I'm not sure what to think about that. Does that mean they are going to move it off of Sunday? Or are they going to shove all the episodes on without a break? How will they fit in 22 episodes if Idol starts in March?

I will give it a chance, but if it seems to cancel out the happy endings of any of the Charmings, including Henry, I'll be out.

Yes - this is my biggest concern.  If that happens, I might just have to pretend the show ended with their happy ending at the end of this season.  I am also curious of how they will explain Emma's absence.  If something happens to her, it is hard to imagine her parents and son living out their happy ending even if they aren't in peril.

I decided to stop watching at the end of this season as I was watching the musical episode.  So many of the problems with the show on display in an episode that should have been better than it was.

The only thing that would have me willingly checking out season 7 is new showrunners.  That would have been true if JMo returned.

I'm one that posts only if  watch so I'm probably out of here too.  I can't imagine watching a show with no hope of seeing a nugget of what I did enjoy on this show, all of which included the Charmings.  I like Hook but what I liked most is Hook's relationships with David and Emma. And  accepted last Sunday that these showrunners and my taste in shows will never align again.

The only thing that will have me back is if they don't counterprogram anything that I'm interested in at all on my 200+ channels.  In that case the forum will likely get me back because frankly that's the only reason I didn't quit in season 4.

I'm angry that A&E are getting rewarded for treating the hero characters like crap and now they have a show with all their favorites.  And Rumple returning?  WTF.

This yes! This is what makes me angry the most.

Hey guys!  Shiny new (appropriate) thread for you to discuss Season Seven!

The topic here is now completely ratings and scheduling.  All other talk belongs elsewhere, now that we've got the official renewal.

I just checked my calender. There are 22 Sundays from the beginning of September to the end of January. They'll probably want to skip Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve so that would leave two episodes for February. So they'd probably find two Sundays in Febraury when there is no big awards show or Superbowl to end the season before Idol starts in March. Or they could double up some Sundays and not have to worry about skipping any Sundays in February for big events. But then they'd have to put something else on in February for maybe one or two Sundays during sweeps. So if it is staying on Sunday for a 22-episode season they'll probably run it from September to February with a few weeks off for holidays and live events.

That is of course assuming that Idol will be on Sundays. I don't think that has been officially announced and is based only on speculation.

Super Bowl is February 4th then Winter Olympics are from February 9th to February 25th, both on NBC and then the Oscars air on March 4th on ABC. So that's all of February gone. The other networks don't usually air original programming during he Superbowl or Olympics. So they could maybe do a 2 hour premiere & 2 hour finale- that would get them to the end of January. Super Bowl, then Olympics, then Oscars and then American Idol starts in March the week after the Oscars?

Unless they plan to have Once be the lead into Idol but I can't imagine that.

You also have to factor in Golden Globes, Grammys, and the Billboard awards, which air on ABC. And totally forgot about the Olympics next year. The schedule will be interesting next week.

Well, it is still ABC's #5 drama because ABC has such poor drama development.

I still think it's possible Once may air after Idol in the second half. They are both family shows, and women are the largest base for both shows (at least going off Idol's ratings before it was cancelled last time). It would make more sense to throw a show with similar demographics in its seventh, likely final season at 10 o'clock than put comedies, Match Game, or a less matching drama there.

It feels like if they paid all that money for Idol they'd want to pair it with something with more potential.

...I suppose that the comedy cancellations should make the renewal less surprising. People expected an extra expansion of comedy hours to reduce on their poor drama slate, but ABC ended 4 comedies including Last Man Standing - which is an actual success - cuz its price tag is getting so high.

Yeah, I think they may have had to choose where to drive the bank truck and Modern Family was their first choice. They did pick up a Zach Braff project, which makes me think some extra comedy money was spent there. And if they pick up the Carol Burnett pilot, that's another high profile but high priced show.

On the other hand, ABC picked up a House-like show from a guy from House and a Shonda show if that tells you anything about their drama picks.

That's not enough time for them to write and film 22 episodes. They were shooting the season six finale in March, weren't they? I'm not sure Idol will end up on Sunday nights. What night is The Voice on NBC?

Link to comment

Voice is Monday and Tuesday. They'd be absurd to move the overperforming Wednesday comedy lineup or Thursday drama lineup. Friday is too low-viewed to have all that effort to get the show.

Sunday makes the most sense.

Link to comment

Could they move Once in the spring? I don't know if they'd want it following American Idol at 10, but maybe Once gets shifted to the slot of one of their sure to be cancelled early dramas. Given the fan reaction to the loss of cast, I don't expect Once's ratings to be very high at all next season. If they need to film all 22 episodes for Netflix reasons, I could see them burning them off in a death slot and putting something with more long term potential on Sundays.

Link to comment

I suppose the question is what else could they put at 10 after Idol that would make any sense? Designated Survivor will probably be doing worse than Once around Spring next year and I don't think they'll touch their comedies or Thursday lineup. Perhaps they could move Once to follow Dancing With the Stars? (I haven't seen if Quantico's been cancelled yet, I'm just assuming it will be.)

If Netflix paid for streaming, I think Once could hit a 0.4 and still do the full season. And as ABC has proven, they will run a show with low numbers. American Crime was pulling 0.3 by the end, Quantico is being given its full run with bad numbers, Shield had a 0.5 this season I believe and got renewed. Conviction and Notorious were pretty horrific and got their full 13-episode run. There may be some other factors involved -- how well the new dramas do for example -- but I could see them giving Once a lot of rope before finally pulling them. That being said, I also wouldn't be surprised if ABC puts a heavy hand on the show runners or even replaces A&E in the next few weeks.

I really doubt ABC is going to pull the show off the air before airing the full-season order. Season 8 is extremely unlikely, but season 7 being taken off the air midseason is also unlikely, imo.

I know people here aren’t happy, but I’m glad this show got another season if trash like Marvel’s Agents of Shield could get another season.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D is better than Once at this point, IMO.

We'll have to agree to disagree there, because I'd take OUAT any day of the week over AoS.

At risk of going too OT, I have to say I agree with Inquirer here. AOS has been doing some of their best work with their current arc. I also have more trust in the people running that show then A&E to do the characters justice and not insult the audience with some of the retcons, rushed/dropped storylines or stupid character developments/actions we have witnessed too much of with Once... If you haven't checked out AOS in a while, this past half-season, starting with the LMD storyline and really picking up with the Framework one, is worth checking out.

Back on topic, I found it interesting to hear the part Netflix played in the decision to renew. I never thought about it, but it definitely makes sense. Even though streaming and On-Demand has been a big factor for a while now, this seems to indicate it was a bigger one then usual. I guess streaming revenue is the new syndication revenue in scheduling decisions...

AOS may be better creatively, but Once was beating it in the ratings. They are plenty of great shows that get cancelled and bad shows that get renewed, but in the end, ratings matter more than storylines.

Someone mentioned the possibility of Quantico getting renewed because of the international streaming market. So Netflix may not play a role domestically as much as internationally. There seems to be quite a contingent of fans on tumblr who are from Europe and particularly Australia and Brazil for some reason. And I do wonder if there is a package deal in there -- pay money for Once and maybe other ABC properties to grease the wheels when it comes to Marvel shows on Netflix.

(And btw, it looks like there's still no word on Quantico. So that one is a real bubble show and it's right on the breaking point between cancelled and renewed dramas. If that gives you an idea of how bad ABC is hurting for dramas next season.)
