  1. I have my number one, hands down. And then I have an easy pick for number two as well. But after that, there's a clump of characters I find equally valuable to the show.
  2. I remember watching Stella Dallas in a college film course with a classmate who only knew Stanwyck from an episode of Charlie's Angels.
  3. I finally pulled up a mental image of Theo, but Chris I still can't remember. Is he the one who pinched Cara Jessica Parker, causing her to go into a meltdown that he was pointing out the (non-existent) fat at her waist? I worked to feel sorry for Cara, as she obviously had some issues and I didn't care for the producers' focus on her sex life, but it could be hard. Same with Tonya, and I don't think life in what passes for the spotlight was a good thing for her. Other than that, I remember yelling, "You can do so much better!" at Keri through the TV screen whenever she'd dally with Kyle, Aneesa pooping with the bathroom door open, the TV being brought in on 9/11 so they could see what had transpired and their show-sponsored vacation being a boring road trip in light of the subsequent travel restrictions, and "Get my fucking name right" at the reunion. That's about it. I was in my waning days as a RW viewer then.
  4. Hee. I may not like the episode, but the quote is funny. V
  5. Season two is when the show really started firing on all cylinders for me. I really enjoy season one, but it's a more traditional sitcom at that point in time. Season two is when I realized this was really going to be something special. And, yes -- highly rewatchable episodes. The one about their tax return, with the music every time someone says audit, Fathers and Daughters, where Dan goes shopping with Becky and Roseanne watches basketball with Darlene, Bratty Becky's war of silence, Jackie filling in for Roseanne, Becky and Dana getting drunk, Jackie becoming a cop, the Gary arc, Roseanne's numerous post-Wellman attempts at employment (telemarketing, being managed by The Little Maggot at the fast-food restaurant, the beauty shop, having an office job for about 30 seconds before her lack of computer skills puts the kibosh on that, etc.), Ziggy coming to town, Brain-Dead Poet's Society with the poem that will make me cry every single time, a great Thanksgiving episode in addition to the usual Halloween brilliance, and Becky.cut.the.cheese. The only two I don't watch over and over are the fantasy sequence episode and the one with the annoying architect who keeps worming his way into time with the Conners. I freakin' love the tag to that one, though!
  6. I don't remember Tiffani bothering me in her season. I remember that she was someone easy to dislike, I just don't remember disliking her. And I liked her in the All Stars season. (And, by the way, it's sexual orientation, not preference.) I absolutely could not stand Marcel and cannot imagine having to live and work alongside him, but that some of his castmates opted to express their issues with him via assault is just mind boggling to me. Assholes. I also couldn't stand Stephen "Tool and Douchebag" Asprinio, but I can't remember if he bugged me in subsequent appearances.
  7. I didn't see that episode, but per the archive: Category: Arlington National Cemetery Clue: The remains for Arlington's first monument to unknown soldiers mostly came from this battlefield 30 miles away Answer: Bull Run.
  8. Krycek, Alex Doggett, John Langly, Richard "Ringo"
  9. Krycek, Alex Mulder, Samantha Doggett, John
  10. Maybe because seemingly half this country's sports journalists pronounce Bengals as "bangles." These are often the same people who speak of Jacksonville's NFL team as the "Jagwires" (instead of the Jaguars).
  11. I'm kind of digging the whole '80s series Honda is doing, even though I'm old enough that I only remember these characters from when my best friend and I had to watch her little brother. I've seen Stretch Armstrong, Jem, Gumby, those weird little toys ("little people," maybe?), Skeletor (was that from He-Man?), and Strawberry Shortcake.
  12. Ooh, a Byers vote. All along, I've been most looking forward to seeing how the LGM wind up ranking -- are they all in a row, what order do they go out in, etc. I haven't even completely decided that for myself yet (I know Langly would be my first Gunman to go, but that's about it).
  13. As part of my post-Streetcar sputtering, I declared that Gillian better be nominated for an Olivier. Well, maybe she's on her way; she just won the Best Actress prize at the London Evening Standard theatre awards.
  14. I like the commercial for ... something ... based around people screwing up the lyrics. "I told you it wasn't provolone." Found it:
  15. I've just realized I like a whole lot of duets, and agree with everything listed so far. Some other favorites: Pretty much anything Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton have done together, especially Islands in the Stream. Same with George Jones and Tammy Wynette, especially Golden Ring, and Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn, especially Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man. Kenny Rogers with lots of people, really - Don't Fall in Love With a Dreamer with Kim Carnes, We've Got Tonight with Sheena Easton, Anyone Who Isn't Me Tonight with Dottie West. (His versions of the last two with Dolly Parton are pretty damn great, too.) Sonny and Cher, I Got You Babe Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Empire State of Mind Willie Nelson and Ray Charles, Seven Spanish Angels Eminem and Rihanna, Monster David Frizzell and Shelly West, You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma Neil Tennant and Dusty Springfield, What Have I Done to Deserve This? Tanya Tucker and T Graham Brown, Don't Go Out This probably doesn't count, since it was a mix of two versions rather than a true duet, but what the hell -- Keith Whitley and Alison Krauss, When You Say Nothing At All Speaking of Alison Krauss, she and Brad Paisley singing Whiskey Lullaby Freddie Mercury and David Bowie, Under Pressure Patti LaBelle and Michael McDonald, On My Own (Oops, this is now a duplicate; it hadn't been mentioned at the time I started my musings.) Johnny Cash and June Carter, Jackson Aretha Franklin and Annie Lennox, Sisters Are Doin' it For Themselves Roy Orbison and k.d. lang, Crying Lita Ford and Ozzy Osbourne, Close My Eyes Forever Eve and Gwen Stefani, Let Me Blow Ya Mind Patty Loveless and George Jones, You Don't Seem to Miss Me Jennifer Warnes and Joe Cocker, Up Where We Belong Another Jennifer Warnes, another movie soundtrack -- she and Bill Medley, The Time of My Life Peaches and Herb, Reunited Brandy and Monica, The Boy is Mine Simon & Garfunkel, Bridge Over Troubled Water Philip Bailey and Phil Collins, Easy Lover Reba McEntire and Linda Davis, Does He Love You
  16. Maybe there is more than one with the dog theme, but the one I saw didn't position the guy as wrong for leaving his dog alone overnight because he crashed at a friend’s house rather than drive home drunk, but instead praised him for sleeping it off rather than driving drunk, ensuring he’d be able to come home to his dog (rather than dying and leaving the dog without his owner). He’s apologizing for making the dog wait for him, but explaining why it had to happen. The plans that need to be made are to get home, period – alive – not to do something stupid in order to get home earlier.
  17. That's how I do it; I occasionally add some white wine or cognac, but I pretty much keep it simple -- a little bit of the fat from the drippings mixed with flour to make a roux, plus non-fat drippings and some chicken stock - and have never added milk.
  18. And the setting for Nora's wonderfully-delivered "Waiter, will you serve the nuts? I mean, will you serve the guests the nuts?" in The Thin Man. A side salad. (And wine, but I assume drinks were left off.) I did notice the lack of cranberries, but we don't usually have them, either, because I'm the only one who likes them - so it just depends on whether I'm in the mood to pick up some cranberries (fresh only, because that glop in a can just plain grosses me out) and make something just for me, and I'm usually not. I really only do it on the years my best friend joins us. I got home early this morning, and Maddie turned out to be an excellent motorhome kitty. By Friday some people with dogs had come in on either side of us, and, even though there was a whole lot of open space between us and them, she could see and hear them and just didn't care for that at all when we were outside, so she pretty much stayed in after that other than a couple of short walks around the campsite each day. But she'd just take a nap in there when she was by herself, so it worked out great. Thanksgiving dinner came out delicious, even though I forgot to bring the sprigs of rosemary I'd cut for the brine. We still had plenty of garlic (and salt, of course), so couldn't go wrong. I have to wake up earlier in the motorhome than I'd like, because I have the sofa bed, so when my parents come out of the bedroom into the main cabin, they're in my "bedroom," but my dad makes me a Bloody Mary and I get over it. And my mom made waffles Friday morning, so I was, well, a happy camper.
  19. Amen, anneofcleaves. I've certainly not seen every episode, but in those I've seen, Ina's chicken looks as mine does when I cut into it (I aim for a final internal temp of 165). Chicken and shrimp are things that I do not want cooked a minute past the minimum temperature, because they go from perfect to "ugh, this is overcooked" that quickly. I know temperature recommendations have gone down over the years (thank heavens), but it's really funny to see how much -- my fantastic GE stove from the '50s has an integrated meat thermometer and next to the dial showing the temp, it has a list of internal temperatures for turkey, beef - rare, beef - medium, and so forth, and if I followed those temps, not knowing they were outdated, I would not eat a damn thing that came out of my oven.
  20. The forum also auto-saves your draft reply every X seconds (no idea what X is), so if you lose something you should be able to recover at least a good chunk of it. When you click in the reply box again, an option will come up to restore saved content.
  21. I think I could eat Brussels sprouts daily and not get sick of them. They're very good just simply roasted, but also good roasted with some pancetta and then drizzled with a little balsamic vinegar when they come out of the oven. This recipe with walnuts is tasty when you want them mixed in with other things.
