Great win for Kat, that I think would have happened even if Corwin had used his can opener. But I'd have still cheered him had it turn out the other way. It was a nice match. I'm here in L.A. and need to check out Kat's food.

America's Test Kitchen - General Discussion
Bastet replied to David T. Cole's topic in America's Test Kitchen
I had one in Liege, and it was good, but nothing I'd get excited about enough to make (I'm not terribly excited by bread, and like sweet things in small doses, so that's not a knock on the waffles specifically, just a result of my general tastes). The whole episode was things I won't make; I'll eat a brownie if handed to me, but I'm never going to choose it from a platter with other offerings, and crepes are fine, maybe even good depending on what they have in/on them, but nothing I'll seek out. But it had been so long since the last new episode, I sat (well, stood; I was folding laundry and puttering a bit) through the whole thing. Same with the CC episode; I'd try the pork chops (but not with sweet potatoes) if someone else made it, out of curiosity if I'd like the seasoning and sauce combination (I don't love cooked fruit, generally, so I'm not sure about the cherry sauce, nor am I entirely sure about the pumpkin spice in the rub, but I think I'd like it). The barbecue hash segment in South Carolina was interesting; if I was there, sure, I'd overlook the fact the dishes looks like vomit and try at least one version, but no way am I making any of them, especially the one they chose with all that yellow mustard. -
It was W. And Karl Rove.

FilmNight: Movies you watched recently
Bastet replied to Rushmoras's topic in Everything Else About Movies
I love Better Off Dead ("I want my two dollars!"), and, while I have nowhere near the same affection for it, I am entertained in spite of itself by the Charlie Sheen/Emilio Estevez collaboration Men at Work -- which totally rips off that line! ("Oh, looky here, somebody threw away a perfectly good white boy"). -
I didn't have high hopes for the original yet it was still a let-down, so I cannot imagine how crappy this sequel is based on the trailer.

The only reason I don't re-watch The Naked Gun on a semi-annual basis is the presence of O.J. so that final shot of Nordberg's son has me rolling, but I'm skeptical of this as nothing else in the trailer made me laugh. I'm not going to the cinema for this, but when it comes to something I have access to in my living room, I'll give it a shot.

Sarah Gruenberg from season nine, Texas, who mistreated Beverly Kim that season. Bailey has worked for both of them since, and I don't have any guilt by association feelings towards her, but that's the reference.

"Are you telling me that not only did you invent a secret plan to fight inflation, but now you don't support it?" "Celestial Navigation" is possibly my favorite episode of the entire series. Post-root canal C.J. is absolutely hilarious, and Bartlet in the Oval Office when he's learning about the several catastrophes incidents that occurred in his absence also cracks me up. "Okay, before we go on: C.J., if blood is gushing from the head wound you just received from a stampeding herd of bison, you'll do the press briefing."

I missed all of this week's episodes, so just checked the archive for the FJ clues. I could have sat here until I died and not come up with Friday's; I've never heard of them. I didn't come up with James Fenimore Cooper, either, but got the rest.

Hopefully Sam called and told him to turn around and come back home. That whole thing was stupid, with her not going, because Jay can't see Shiki, or explain, so what was he going to do -- just walk into the office, put some strange contraption down, and hope Shiki found it? And what would happen if she did, since she can't push the button to let Sass out?

They've been divorced a long time; the reason Julian hates Family Day at the firm is that's when Senior, in the bunny costume, chose to tell eight-year-old Julian oh, BTW, I'm divorcing your mom.

Because if there really is a dead daughter, and she's somehow the reason for this deception, then Olympia is going to have to feel sorry for her on that level, and maybe even understand why she did all this, and she's not remotely ready for that at those points in the episode. It's like when Matty heard Olympia's saved message from her dad, after stealing her computer, and had to look up at the suspect board and remind herself "We're not friends".

The West Wing Weekly & Other The West Wing Podcasts
Bastet replied to BW Manilowe's topic in The West Wing
I've recently poked through some transcripts of the West Wing Weekly podcasts (I do not have the patience to actually listen to podcasts), and I'm impressed with how critical they are, and how - as two men - they routinely call out the sexism. The little bits of Josh Malina as himself I've seen over the years left me with a poor impression of him, but I like most of what I've read from him in these podcasts. -
They're my favorite part, even as I love the rest. I will never tire of watching the DVD commentary when C.J. falls into her pool; Martin Sheen cracks up even more than I did, which is saying something.

No, as they've managed to find a couple with even less romantic/sexual chemistry than Thor and Flower, a feat I did not find achievable. I found this episode rather resoundingly blah. There were a few funny lines, and I did like Flower being one of the few people who wasn't stupid and/or awful and thus turning the tables on Trevor and Hetty, but this was not their best effort.

I will let everything about the case go - for tonight, anyway - because I was frakkin' glued to my TV for all the Olympia/Matty stuff. Someone please go engrave all the awards for Skye Marshall. Goddamn. She had to play so many emotions, and she nailed every one of them. I don't know if I can pick a favorite, but top contenders are: the flashback to her at home, make-up off and hair covered, frantically searching for additional listening devices and then making up an explanation to her kids, and the way her voice broke and she had to repeat herself when saying "my friend" to Matty.

Sara Bradley. She's competed on two seasons of Top Chef.

I wanted to try all those restaurants they staged at. I knew it was going to be Kat and Corwin eliminated, which bummed me out as I'm ready to lose Vinny (not Lana, but she's distinguished herself more to me by how stunningly beautiful she is and how much I love her voice than by making memorable food). I agree with what the judges said, they have no idea who he is as a chef, just who all his famous mentors are. It's pretty cool for the team with immunity to turn out the best dish of the night. That was the one I most wanted to eat, but the Royal Thai was a very close second.

S07.E03: Applications, Accusations and a Man-Bag
Bastet replied to chitowngirl's topic in The Conners
Quoting myself to say I looked it up to see if my vague memory is correct, and, yes, they'd retconned the injury that led to Jackie leaving the force from hurting her back falling down stairs (while chasing a naked guy) to shooting herself in the leg back in season four, episode 12. -
I didn't know that one, either; I've never seen it and don't know much about it other than it exists. I missed another movie in that category, too, but have already forgotten it. I was rooting for Roy because I loved him so very much on The Daily Show, but Robin played a good game and I love her charity so I'm really happy for her. LOL at Romy and Michelle being what led Natalie to come up with post-it. Pop culture so often sinks me on J! but there are also numerous examples where I only know something because it was discussed in a show/movie. I also laughed at Ken's desperation to get someone to act out YMCA. Roy indeed saying it like a cowboy was entertaining. And Natalie's depressed cowboy. This was a fun game. It's weird we didn't hear Ken and the contestants talking at the very end like we usually do.

S07.E03: Applications, Accusations and a Man-Bag
Bastet replied to chitowngirl's topic in The Conners
You're right, but I have a vague memory that they'd already retconned that in an episode several seasons back. Becky and Dan's conversations were great. "Resting Darlene Face" made me laugh. As did Neville's fashion knowledge and "That is a circle we could not close" about needing bigger boobs to get a sugar daddy but needing a sugar daddy to pay for bigger boobs. -
Woodstone Manor: The I-saac Sees All (Spoilers&Speculation)
Bastet replied to Neptune's topic in Ghosts (US)
No, it's a big ball of nothing -- just that Roman would like Sass's death to be something ridiculous and embarrassing: "I would love for it to be something so ridiculous that he's been hiding it for so long. Like, he's been telling a story, and it turns out that story is completely false, and it's actually something else incredibly embarrassing." -
Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
Bastet replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
Way back in the 1800s, yes, otherwise, no. Here's an article that gives an overview. Sure, in numerous places you can find a Coke machine that only dispenses Coca-Cola products (just as you can find Pepsi machine only dispensing Pepsi-Co products). But the discussion refers to all the places in the southern U.S. where "Coke" is used as generically as "soda" or "pop" or similar are used elsewhere to refer to soft drinks in general, regardless of brand. @StatisticalOutlierillustrated this well with the Dr. Pepper example. -
Alberta's explanation played as sincere to me, which makes it clunky writing to have her describe herself as "a new ghost". It would have made far more sense for her to say the same things she did about freaking out about a 1000-year existence, framed instead as it making her think good gods, she had so many conflicting emotions at 50-some years, what the hell was it going to be like at a thousand.

Were they ever not? I tried Kohl's once, back in the day when it moved into a space that had been previously occupied by Mervyn's -- another low-cost option, but a better one -- and the quality sucked.
