Rue tries to get clean for Jules and chaperones Gia at the carnival; Jules encounters Cal with his family; annoyed at their boyfriends, Cassie and Maddy decide to do Molly together; Kat hangs out with Ethan until she misreads a situation.

I was confused what happened, the guy kept asking Rue what was her first drug experience like and it cuts right to the carnival.  I thought at first it was a flashback.  I guess we're not 100% sure if Rue told him about kissing Jules and not being able to score so that is why she called him.

Jules should have been too shook to try to meet "Tyler" after Cal cornered her in some remote area.  Instead Cal was just blubbering not to tell anyone but he's not exactly being discreet.  You see them go home with the wife carrying in that big pot, he runs up to his office and discovers one of his DVDs is missing.  Those DVDs of him having sex with underage kids.

Yet Jules decides to go to an even more remote place to wait for Tyler. I'm surprised Nate didn't beat up his gf or Jules.  They both have incriminating information on him.  He begs Maddie not to tell anyone but she's already told someone.  He threatens Jules with trafficking in child porn, of herself.

Well him keeping that evidence for blackmail would put him in trouble as well, wouldn't it?

So Nate did want to hook up with Jules.  He wasn't going to beat up or kill Jules, who then called him f***** like his daddy.  Then Nate came with the blackmail.

Meanwhile Kat is growing up before our eyes.  She's better at manipulating people than anyone on the show.  Seems like fat shaming alone set her on this path.

Jule's backstory is  messed up as one would have expected.  If the mother didn't die, Jules might be in worse shape.

I thought that too, but once I saw Jules on the Ferris wheel it obviously wasn't.

Rue and Jules clearly have a very strong and intimate connection, so in the long-term I think this could be a good thing for them, but I expect it's going to be a rollercoaster in the short term given their (Rue's, especially) personal issues.

Having been to AA (ahem), I can say that you are really not supposed to ask people about their first drug experiences, or any drug experiences, etc (drug-a-log) because it may stir up good memories and make that person want to use.  So the writers either didn't do their homework or they don't care.

This whole episode was weird - it was shot like a horror movie, and the music was really confusing.

This show makes me so thankful nudes weren't a thing when I was in high school. Sad to see Rue's sister following her footsteps. Nate is a calculating bastard. Maddie and Ye Olde Carousel Masturbator are the worst actors on this show by far. I still think Jules is using Rue as a security blanket/backup option. It's a little smarmy to conveniently decide to reciprocate immediately after your Plan A went south.

I was glad the "misread situation" with Kat's crush was her jumping to conclusions about his coworker, rather than her being friendzoned again. But was fucking the townie necessary???

Ugh. 😥😞. What a nightmare. Would the authorities really throw the book at a 17 year who only took nude selfies of herself? She should just squeal on the son to the dad, or squeal on both of them to the authorities. Or call 1800-ALLRED. Jules is supposed to be 17, but Nate is 18 and dad is 50.

It certainly isn’t advisable to romanticize one’s past drug or alcohol experiences, but I don’t think that was Ali’s intent. It has been my experience that being able to relate to other alcoholics and drug addicts concerning the compelling feelings around that first use is important. So is sharing the futility of chasing that first high.

What I had trouble with was the fact that a male in recovery gave a female his number. I thought it a little inappropriate. But then, I’m female and had a male sponsor for decades. Ali’s calling Rue out on her BS was appropriate, though. It is always more effective when it is done by a fellow addict/alcoholic.

A minor taking/possessing/sending nudes of themselves is technically illegal, but you're right, the authorities in this case would probably be more interested in pursuing charges on the adults she's interacting with. Unless, Jules ran into a prosecutor who had an issue with transgender people/teenagers in particular, then they could be willing to throw the book at her. I think Jules was just too scared in the moment to think through Nate's threats. In case any teens are watching this, it is good to have yet another reminder to anyone underage that taking naked pictures of themselves is a bad idea.

Love the episode title: Cal, sir, you are no halfway crook, and he's not the only character who could end up in prison. I'm also wondering if this is the first time Nate has catfished one of his father's hookups or if he does this regularly?

I'm liking "Rules" for the drama, even though Jules only turned to her friend because she got rejected by her dream man and Rue is looking for a person to fill the void she feels in the absence of using drugs.

I have to wonder what would have happened if Nate hadn't borrowed his dad's line. Jules seemed pretty into the kiss up to that point.

Rue's addiction remains boring, and I've now added anything involving her family to the fast forward category.

McKay is a jackass.

I'm still loving this show, and I think this might have been my fav ep of all.

Looks like I was right about the jock guy knowing about what his dad and Jules were up to, and that he was catfishing her.

The little kid drug dealer makes me laugh every time he's on screen.

So was it just the DvD of Jules that was missing?

Jules is such a compelling character. I love her style too.

He’s got face tattoos! Does no one in that town care? He’s like 12!

Seemingly.

It's 2019.  Why does he have DVDs at all?

Most computers are sold without optical drives now.

He could have locked up his computer with encrypted folder or stored it on an iPad with full device encryption.

That would have made it more secure than that office door lock.

But it's 2019 so more likely the files would be up in the cloud and Cal would have gotten hacked.  Or Nate figures out his password, like 'chilicook' or something equally obvious.

That’s not implausible to me.  He’s an older guy and set in his preferred way of doing things.  And he perhaps likes having them on physical media.

Yeah especially if he had been doing this for years prior and was used to the process.

I mean it is 2019 and I am shocked when my online buddies on music boards still insist on paying more for CDRs of live shows instead of paying half the price for a lossless audio file.  Some people are just either stuck in their ways or need something tactile.

I struggle with Nate and Maddie. I just get an American Psycho vibe from Nate and see him wanting to be with a blonde, very peppy girl like the Reese Witherspoon character.

I’m really enjoying this show.

Mckay screwed up with the we just chillin stuff, but I kinda get where he's coming from. Cassie has a reputation and Mckay knows what an ass Nate is so he just tried to avoid the whole thing. But unfortunately it hurt Cassie. But Cassie kind of proved him right with the way she behaved at the end of the episode.

What did Cassie do?

In the scene where McKay and Cassie talk for the last time, he mentions that Nate will talk sh-- about something Cassie did in the past, and it will come out for everyone to know. Cassie looks sad and guilty, but they don't say what it was. My first thought is that she had an abortion, but I imagine that abortions are so common with their crowd of peers that it wouldn't be a big deal if that came out. Just wondering what she did. Her Mom seems like someone who had a few abortions in her time.

I can't tell if Nate is infatuated/wants to hook up with Jules, or borderline wants to kill her. He is that much of a nut. He called her "broken"? He is just as broken (as are many in this show) if not more. When Jules said that Nate was a "f*****" just like his Daddy, I thought he would turn extremely violent against her, but instead said "Have a nice evening", and walked away. He is the biggest psycho in the whole show.

I think Nate has a video of either himself or someone else on the football team having sex with Cassie. Basically, the implication that Cassie is nothing but a big ole slut.

You are definitely right. I re-watched the first episode and they referred to that and passed around a video of Cassie going at it with multiple guys.

Didn't they leave it ambiguous though, they said something like, "you can't see her face..."

The show did a great job casting young Jules. They also did a good job depicting her depression and explaining it.

I liked the carnival scenes because so many of the characters were there at the same time and we got to see some people interacting who we normally don't see in the same room. I liked the reminder that Jules and Kat were friends, and the temporary team up of Cassie and Maddy was hilarious: "Bitch, you're my soul mate!"

Awww, I loved Rue and Jules reconciling, but Ali brought up a good point when he compared her obsession/friendship with Jules and being high.

Oh, teenagers. Kat was having so much fun with her lab partner and then she got jealous because she saw him talking to another girl? As we saw, it was his sister's coworker, but of course Kat assumed that he was flirting with her which caused her to run off and fuck some random guy at the carnival. I have no issue with her having sex, but pick someone more worthy. And bro, if you have to ask a girl, "Did you come?" the answer is NO.

Cassie, on the other hand, had every right to get mad at McKay. He just told her in private that he loves her and then in public he said that she wasn't his girlfriend and that they were just chilling. I didn't buy his weak excuse that he was just trying to keep Nate from talking shit about her. Nate is the kind of asshole who was going to talk shit about Cassie no matter what. McKay was just being a scaredy cat who didn't want to admit that he was dating Cassie. Even though he's a year older than Nate, he is obviously still intimidated by him and too afraid to stand up to him (see also: episode 1 where Nate bullied him into having a party at his house).

Speaking of Nate, he finally snapped when he slammed Maddy against a wall and choked her. JFC. If you can't control your temper to the point where you're doing that in public, you have anger management issues. The look on her face when he said that he was confused was priceless.

When Cal followed Jules, I was convinced he was going to threaten her so I was surprised that instead he begged her not to expose him.

I'm with Rue - even if I didn't know a violent and vengeful person like  Nate was catfishing Jules, meeting some guy in person for the first time in the woods late at night is a terrible idea. I was honestly shocked that he didn't hurt her. I thought he would still be so worked up about Maddy (and about seeing Jules talk to his dad) that he would lose it and drown her right there.

The actor playing Cal portrayed that scene in a very interesting way. I wasn’t expecting it. Given what an aggressive bully Nate is, I assumed his Dad might be the same way- people leading double lives get really scary when they are caught, but he had a vulnerability to him, and an acknowledgment that he was the one with something to lose not Jules (which duh is the truth I just didn’t expect him to be that self aware).

Noooo! Kat, you insecure idiot! I just want her to date that nice kid who sits next to her at school. Is that too much to ask? Instead she's getting off all these odd older guys while not getting off herself.

I laughed when Maddy asked Nate why he had dick pics on his phone and he said "It's complicated". 😆 But I legit don't know how much Nate was acting with Jules and how much he was genuinely into Jules. I know it was all a blackmail scheme, but Nate is obviously very screwed up, and maybe that scheme was the only way he could indulge that aspect of his sexuality. Like, if he needed an excuse it was a neat excuse. The way he copies his dad's sexlife is deeply weird though, down to visiting the same motel.

I'm starting to wonder if Rue's childhood friend is also gay and into Rue. There's something going on with her.
