The Chuck Mangione bit reminded me of that King of the Hill episode that he was on and was a plot point in.

King of The Hill went to that well A LOT. Any time Chuck Mangione showed up, anything he said or did inevitably led to him playing "Feels So Good."

ETA: Also . . . Colorado doesn't border Canada. Okay, I'll stop now.

And Niagara Falls is nowhere near Colorado. They just drove to the border.

yeah but that just means his revenge will just take a bit longer. Remember this is the bastard who arranged for two parents to be shot just so he could turn them into chilli. He has a plan. God help us all.

That's what I'm saying. It's got to be the season finale. I can't see PC principal lasting longer than this season. They're going to reset at some point.

That was a whole lot of fun. I need to see it a second time to pick up on all of the details that I'm sure that I missed the first time. I'm going to focus on what all of the signs say that the crowd holds up especially.

Oh and I loved the Canadian stop sign that said "Stop Buddy." Hee.

Before I forget . . . right before his climatic moment with the Canadian president, Mr. Garrison seems to drink or huff something. Any idea what that could be?

I have no doubt it was amyl nitrate... :-) Ahh, Parker and Stone, predictably twisted as always.

I believe that was a popper.

Agreeing with benteen, also known as a popper.

Forgive me for living a sheltered life . . . what does amyl nitrate do to a person? Fuck another person to death?

LOL! I misspelled it, it's amyl nitrite. My understanding is it's like a short term viagra, and it gets you high at the same time. It used to come in a glass tube, hence the "pop" to activate it. It was meant to be used for angina attacks. I only know about it because I've read all of Hunter S. Thompson's books! :-)

South Park has been responsible for making me waaay less naive than I used to be too! It's all Cartman's fault!!!

Did Anyone else expect Mr. Garrison to just shout "SCISSOR!" while he was raping Canadian Trump to death? (man, that's a sentence I never knew I'd ever type)

ETA: Just realized that Mr. Garrison gave Canadian Trump a lethal Hot Cosby while Butters never even got to enjoy Slow Cosby. I bet we'll see Butters skyping with Charlotte somewhere down the line, even if it's briefly.

Well, if I may quote another Comedy Central great Broad City, they "open up your butthole".

I cannot even describe how hard I laughed when Caitlyn Jenner plowed over a second person with her car, and everyone started applauding. And the look everyone gave when Kyle started to give a speech at the end, and that he just gave up and walked off stage.

Go God Go is one of my favorites, however, I think my favorite religion based one is either "Do the handicapped go to hell/Probably" or the one where they get to ask God one question (I can't remember the name for the life of me). I might give the edge to the former; there are so many good parts, with Cartman as a televangelist being the funniest.

From CC.com, here's the synopsis for "The City Part Of Town":

The town of South Park is about to be rewarded for the great strides it’s made in becoming more up-to-date in an all-new episode titled “The City Part of Town” on Wednesday, September 30 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central.

As the town is gentrifying around him, Kenny attempts to climb out of the cycle of poverty by taking a job at City Wok.

How long has it been since we got a Kenny-based episode?

Late to the party - it was a busy week last week, but I just had to play...

How about your favorite and/or least favorite minor characters? This discussion is making me want to rewatch my favorites even more often than usual!

My favorite is Butters, but I don't think he counts as a minor character anymore. And I apologize potentially in advance - most of my favorite characters are so, so wrong in at least one way... usually many.

My favorite minor characters - Timmy!  - he may only say "Tim-meh!", but somehow he still manages to convey so much - hee. Big Gal Al - he's super, thanks for asking. Mr Kim - I was tickled to see him in the first episode this season. I love when he complains about "those goddam Mongolians!" and keeps trying to make "City" stuff. Satan - I love when Satan shows up. It was great to see him in the "Freemium" episode last season. Ike - My favorite detail is his love of the MacNiel / Lehrer Report (?) and last but not least, two of my favorite recurring bits come from the bartender and Skeeter - I love when Skeeter goes "Hey *insert Skeeter's prejudice of the week*, we don't take too kindly to your kind 'round here" and the bartender says "Now Skeeter, he ain't hurtin' nobody." And Jesus - any time he shows up and Kyle has to kill him for some reason - so he can use his powers - it's so, so wrong, but also so funny.

Special mention to Al Gore - I like real Al Gore, but South Park Al Gore makes me laugh every time "I'm super cereal, guys!"

Least favorite characters - by far for me it's Lemmiwinks. I just groan whenever Lemmiwinks and any of his associated characters shows up. Nothing against hamsters, because Butter's hamsters are adorable. It's just Lemmiwinks.

Which female South Park characters have you guys enjoyed the most?

I think besides Principal Victoria, I enjoy Mayor McDaniels. I also like Wendy, too, even though she can be just as deadly as Cartman sometimes.

I don't think I could choose favorite seasons - I don't know which episodes go with which seasons (I really need to get some DVDs). As for favorite episodes - that would take me a while to choose. Off the top of my head, I know I'd include the MegaStreisand episode, The Coon Trilogy episodes, the Imaginationland episodes, AwesomO, the one where Butters becomes a Mexican hero, Rainforest Schmainforest, Starvin Marvin in Space, and Cartman's Incredible Gift... oh and the one where Cartman creates Faith Plus One and the Mormon episode. (Also of note is the episode where a bunch of people end up in hell and hell's welcome committee guy tells everyone "It was the Mormons. The Mormons is the correct answer." Everybody "Aww!" and the episode with Cartman vs the Hippies - the scene where Cartman "inspects" for hippies is surprisingly accurate and therefore so funny for me. (I teach Insect identification to pest control professionals.))

Awesome, I started to quote parts of your post and realized that I would essentially just be copying and agreeing with pretty much everything you wrote! I, too, love Timmy and how the show's view of the handicapped is actually a lot more enlightened than the one held by much of our far more polite society :)

The Coon Trilogy episodes

I'm obsessed with these. I keep hoping they'll put out a DVD featuring all the Coon episodes like they did with the Imaginationland ones.

Rainforest Schmainforest, Starvin Marvin in Space

These are both among my very, very favorites as well! (Yeah, I know, I say that about far too many episodes---but it's always true!) Didn't Matt and Trey claim that they didn't think the show got good until S4 or so? I have to say that I'm always surprised all over again by how much I really love nearly all S3 and quite a bit of S2 as well.

Which of the two-parter/trilogy episodes would you guys name as favorites and least favorites?

As mentioned above, I absolutely love the Coon episodes, Go God, Go, and I really like Do The Handicapped Go to Hell/Probably as well.

I'm a little less in love with the meter shower ones and Imaginationland.  I know, I know---I'm a terrible fan for not loving the Imagionation land episodes, and I really do see why others love it! Those episodes just don't fully connect with me. The Black Friday episodes are definitely my least favorites.

Aw, see, Imaginationland would be my favorite, and is probably in my top 5 favorite episodes ever.  There are so many little things that just kill me: everyone backing away from Kyle because they think he sucked Cartman's balls (and continually asking why he agreed to that in the first place), the return of the Woodland Christmas Critters and Al Gore, it's Butters heavy (for some reason, his "Snarf, can you shut up for a little while?" always cracks me up), the "why is it so easy for children to break into the Pentagon?", the questioning of all the directors to get ideas and only Mel Gibson being able to come through ("He's crazy, but goddammit, that son of a bitch knows story structure!"), Butters being convinced the Imaginationland guy is going to rape them, and that Santa ultimately saves the day, but Butters still gets grounded.

I think Cartoon Wars might be my least favorite of the multi-parters.  I agree with the message (both about satire AND about Family Guy), but it's one that I don't really find myself itching to rewatch.

The Donald Trump and Caitlyn Jenner stuff was great. I wish South Park didn't always go to the well of sex jokes and vulgarity however. I'm not sure what the concept of being "F****D to death" added to the story besides being shocking for the sake of being shocking. I do think the creators get a bit lazy sometimes.

Link to comment

I actually love Cartoon Wars, in large part because I happen to hate Family Guy :)

I like Family Guy (loved it in its first few seasons), but that's not why I don't like the episodes. Sometimes I get tired of Cartman being Cartman (same with Peter or Brian being Peter or Brian on Family Guy or Roger being Roger on American Dad), and that's prevalent in both Cartoon Wars and Imaginationland.

I hate to disclose that I know this, but poppers usually are more useful for the bottom because it relaxes the body. That whole sequence was just a great sight gag. "we're doing this" huuuffff.

Dilating that guy's sphincter would have made the act less painful. Not what Garrison was going for.

What is sticking out to me, as we reminisce about past seasons, is how high the quality has stayed over 18 years.  Sure, there have been some dips in quality (I'm looking at you Lice Capades), but overall, it's still a very sharp show.  There's not many that can say that.

As for Mr. Hankey, the only one I really like is Red Sleigh Down, where Cartman is trying to get enough "nice" acts to get his Christmas toy, so he rides on the poo-choo train to Iraq.  But that is more for the parts with Santa and Jesus than Mr. Hankey.  "I couldn't let him live!  He shocked Santa's balls!"

The PC revolution continues!

Who would have thought everyone would get so sensitive over Jimmy Fallon making fun of them.

The live action Sodosopa commercials...damn, those places do look so nice.

Ya gotta love Kenny for being so sweet to his sister.

Hey, the Mayor!  It feels like a while since she had a notable part in an episode.  I think there was a glimpse of the back of Dr. Mephisto at the end of the episode, too.

What get-rich-quick scam will Cartman run this week?

Seems to be Kenny, just to get his family out of poverty.

It's awesome to see an actual story arc in a season. Garrison running for president got Jimmy Fallon to riff on South Park, which leads to a hipstery cultural district...built right on top of Kenny's house. It's a nice slam at gentrification, helping out the crappy parts of town...except for the people who live in them.

The live-action ad for SODOSOPA was great...but the City Wok version was even better.

It was nice to see forgotten characters like Barbrady and Father Maxie and the Mayor actually do something. Also, the Dr. Mephisto cameo was great.

ETA: Apparently there will be no new episode next week. Next one airs October 14th.

Didn't really go for this episode. Liked the visual of the adults fighting the City Wok child laborers, but there weren't many laughs for me.

No new episode next week? It's like Comedy Central wants me to sleepwalk through this season.

Being both in the target demographic for those neighborhoods as well as having been to my share of city planning meetings, I found this one very close to home--especially the "we need a Whole Foods" attitude. The hipster Big Gay Al and Mr. Slave cameo was great too. This season's 3/3 for me so far.

I know, right?! And this current season is already showing potential to become one of my favorites ever. Which granted, I've now said about at least 10 seasons...but since so many seasons contain such brilliant episodes (and a couple of clunkers), it's impossible to choose!

Should we try to name our 2-3 favorites from each season?! (Yes, I need a life...)

I wasn't really feeling this one either although it wasn't a bad episode and I apprecate the continuing storyline.  Not to mention, anytime Kenny's economic status is made fun of, I laugh.

Very nice seeing a lot of old, familiar faces.

This was my least favorite of the three S19 episodes we've gotten so far, though that's more a reflection on how much I loved the first two than an indictment of this one. It did feel like this one pounded home the same joke/theme for just a little too long while the first two episodes included a wider variety of different jokes and ideas without going too off point. (Off point by South Park standards, of course!) Like everyone else here, I did like seeing the appearances by former characters---I'd forgotten how much I enjoy the Mayor and her bizarrely colored hair!

I wonder if Randy is going to remain proudly PC throughout the season?!

The visual of Butters crying because Jimmy Fallon made fun of South Park made me laugh harder than it had any right to. As did the Mayor saying "next to our beloved Craig, who's a homosexual" with the pissed off look Craig gave her. I also cracked up when the Mayor pointedly told the town to "not make speeches" while staring at Kyle.

To me the episode felt like all setup with no punchline. That probably fits their continuity-based season model, but I agree that it feels lacking.

On the other hand, ending with a sentimental moment instead of a joke or moral is so rare for SP that I have to give them points for that.

Agreed.  South Park does occassionally manage to hit the sentimental ending.  Remember the one about the kid with no friends who gets all of the Facebook friends at the end?  That was downright heartwarming on this show.

As they're going through the whole foods, there's a voice over about how South Park is progressing and changing (in the vein of the Sodosopa commercials). Kenny looks outside of his house, and all of Sodosopa has been abandoned now that they have the Whole Foods. At the very end, they go back to everyone in the store, and Cartman whispers to Kyle "So, are the Mexicans staying for real?" And then Kyle sushes him.
