S04.E03: The Bad News Bear

Recommended Posts

Love how in every universe, Margo will always use "nuts" instead of "pussy" as a phrase for being a wimp. But poor Bacchus.

Margo begging to talk to Elliot to see if he is still alive just killed me. Stop making my poor heart hurt, show! The Monster is just so eerie, he has this way of moving that is just...off. Like even after all these years inhabiting a person body, it still has no idea how a person is supposed to move.

Glad everything is back together, and with their memories. Poor Q having to hold the bad luck bear, but it was sweet seeing him and Julia reunited, and her trying to be supportive, which was both funny "how do you even get a paper cut on paper towels?!" and sad, like when he finally heard about his dad, and they reflected on all that they gave up to save magic, only to keep getting screwed over. At least he got to do well in the Push game. He even got to use his old slight of hand tricks! I always love how this show remembers so many details about the characters and their backstories, like the aforementioned nuts comment from Margo, Quentin being into card tricks, and Kady still being pissed at Marina for killing her mom, even if this is a different Marina.

Will Santa return to play Big Damn Hero?! I love that this show allows me to type things like that!

I'm too tired tonight to add much but Julia's delivery of "where did it come from?!" As she tried to pull the snake off Q cracked me up. Seriously when did I start liking her so much?

I do wish we'd seen more of Margo and the monster and less of Penny and Kady looking nervous in an office but they may be trying to pace that out. Monster E is super creepy. I am now really curious about what they took from him.

Ha, loved that they had another heist type episode! Even though I know it was fraught with risks, I enjoyed watching it all unfold from Quentin and Penny at the magical card game to Kady and Penny stealing the former porn actress's black card (those McAllister are wild!).

I loved seeing most of the cast together in the first two episodes so I was sad when they got split up again with Margo, Josh, and Monster Eliot in Fillory and Julia, Quentin, Penny, and Kady left behind on earth.

Loved the bad luck bear and seeing all the good luck come and go for Kady and Penny at the bank. Poor Quentin - how do you even get a paper cut from a paper towel?

Alice's storyline at the library hasn't been the most riveting, but she had some good moments this week. I loved that she refused to leave without the others' books. I was kind of sad to see Santa go (I keep forgetting to mention that he was Mr. Morgan on Seinfeld!), but it was worth it to see his sled fly off.

For much of the first four seasons, I wasn't a huge fan of the Julia/ Quentin friendship because there was always imbalance between them. Now I feel like they're finally on more equal footing and it's interesting to see the fundamental differences between them. As Julia pointed out, they have all made a lot of sacrifices to get to where they are now, but she would still give up everything she's lost, including being a goddess, to make the world a little bit better while Quentin seems less certain that he would if he were given that choice. It reminded me of 12 Monkeys - in the very first episode, Cole eagerly agrees that letting one person die to save millions seems like a fair trade. But as the mission goes on, he realizes that it's not as easy to make that decision when the one person who has to die is someone he loves. Brian didn't feel the loss of his father as keenly because he was so young when it happened, but Quentin hasn't lived most of his life without his father so just the thought of him dying is a lot for him to deal with emotionally.

I love all the hilarious details like everyone trying to unlock their alter egos' phones. And of course seeming chill DJ Hansel has a picture of HIMSELF as his lock screen.

I hope we see Frankie again! He was definitely fun to have around and he has some really useful skills.

Julia seemed so flabbergasted by him that it felt like she was actually getting kinda mad... In a funny way... I hope we get to see dean fogg again soon... And its not the bitch at the dean hour  for too long... Yes going to the library was trash.. But he's been around long enough to see unchecked magic.. And for all the good our team did in getting magic back they were also the team that lost it.. So while they deserve to be mad I hope they can see the other side of the argument... Plus I just love his dynamic with the kids.. Specially Julia so I'd like to see more.... And always... More Margo

I'm hoping that the hand over Alice's mouth in the library to keep her from screaming belongs to "our" Penny.

I'm a little concerned about those adorable puppies just showing up, like they were put in Kady's path. I hope that little guy remains just a cute little puppy but I'm suspicious.

I really hated the death of Bacchus. I've had a reluctant fondness for the character since he first appeared. I even liked what the costumer originally did with the Bacchus party wear. The interactions between Josh and Bacchus were poignant too. Not to mention, who doesn't like the God of Wine? The actor was good at bringing out the dark and light aspects of the god. How on earth are we going to get along without Bacchus?

I hope nobody turns this puppy into another cancer puppy. That was grim and hysterical.

Love, love love Margot pointing out that pussies are much tougher than balls. Loved it when she first explained it a couple seasons ago. I too hate that the word pussy is used as slang for cowardice and weakness.

Oh and I loved Santa's sleigh flying away and the random librarian flabbergasted into profanity.

Great episode all around. I cracked the hell up at poor Quentin's bad luck while holding the bear. A freaking boa constrictor coming out of the toilet to strangle him?! Julia's confused questioning over where it came from while trying to save him was fucking amazing.

Also, I need more Marina. She's amazing. Hopefully what Kady did doesn't screw her over too much. Marina is goals. Make her part of the main gang, please.

Quentin Coldwater and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day.

I don't know who got fucked worse in this episode....Quentin or Josh.

I'll probably have to go with Bacchus because at least those guys are still alive.

There is so much continuity in every episode of this show that I realise I need a rewatch. It's so rare to watch a show like this and have everything that happens be a true culmination of everything that happened before. Alice's arc, in particular, is so tragic but so inevitable and it's happening somewhere the main gang can't see.

So I was thinking about Frankie (AKA lucky dude).  Why in the world would he need ANYTHING from the group?  I'm sure he can get all the dewies he needs without doing anything at all - they would just come to him.   For that matter, why wouldn't he just create a black card for himself or just end up having someone give him one?   Why be content with a few dewies when he can have the ultimate card?   Did they say how he got his luck?

For all his good luck (major) somebody would have to get bad luck. Rather than hurt people, he probably just lived off his minor (residual) good luck.

Can someone explain what Katy did to Marina and the bear?  I almost followed all of that, but not quite.

My thinking is that Kady transferred the bad luck from the bear to the coins she gave Marina so that now Marina will have a Q-style bad day, but I'm just guessing.

I thought she transformed the bear to look like one of the coins and give it to her. If anyone has a picture, I think you could tell one of the coins is slightly different.

He said he got his luck from doing so many of these lucky forgery spells that it "rubbed off" on him and now he has constant good luck.

I hate to say it but I'm starting to get nervous about the way this season is being written. More and more it feels like a retcon of the previous season's finale. Dean Fogg keeps saying he had to put the identity spell on the students because they were in terrible danger but what kind? If he means from the Monster, that doesn't make any sense. Even if he had known about the Monster there would have been no reason to think the students were in danger from it because Elliot had just shot the damn thing. Clearly Fogg brought the potion to Castle Blackspire with the intention of using it before he could have had any idea about the Monster.

Or does Fogg mean they were in danger from the McAllistairs? That doesn't make any sense either. Irene was right there when Fogg produced the potion at Castle Blackspire. If the McAllistairs were threatening to kill the students, did they agree to let them live if they were given new identities? And Fogg and the Library were OK with that, as if the McAllistairs were the deciding factor in that?

The fact is, Fogg betrayed them last season and I think maybe the writers are trying to back pedal on that a bit, but his protests about "protecting" the students with this potion don't hold water.

I wonder if maybe the original intention was to have a whole season with the students not remembering who they were and the writers changed their minds at some point. The characters got their memories back pretty quickly and the "danger" they are in seems confusing. Clearly the Monster is a threat, but he found Elliot anyway, even with the potion, and Quentin too. He probably would have found the rest of them even with the identity spell. And I still don't understand the threat from the McAllistairs. It's just not all adding up.

You raise some good points iMonrey. I hadn’t thought about it quite so clearly, but Fogg’s betrayal does rankle and mostly because it doesn’t make a lot of sense. I fear that Dean Fogg thought his interests and by extension Brakebill’s interests were best served by alliance with the library and things went from there. Fogg clearly didn’t spend even 90 seconds thinking about his relative power once the library controlled all access to magic.

Yeah I seem to recall having the impression that Fogg used the memory potion primarily to get "those meddling kids" out of the way.  didn't want to kill them, but didn't want them ganging up together to "fix" things.

Agreed!  I also definitely believe that Fogg had no idea magic would be so limited to the school - I think he thought the school would have an adequate supply, and was surprised when the school got screwed.
