Cat will be back as host.

Judges will be Nigel, Alison Hoeker, Comfort Fedoke, and DWTS alum Maksim Chmerkovskiy.  This has the makings of a good panel

set to air Mar 4 at 9PM

Article on the details

Well, that’s a really nice surprise. I’m sure we all thought it was dead after there was no word of a renewal after last season. I am quite surprised that Nigel is back as host after what happened before

What happened before?

I am glad to see Nigel back, I think, I've seen a lot of people talk about him in very ageist manners and that's why I thought he was gone.

I feel for Allyson but I don't want her on the judging panel and they had better not milk her "story."

Love Comfort and I feel secure that she will be a great judge.

High hopes for Maks.  He can be very likeable and compassionate when he decides to be.

I hope Cat stays real - she seems less and less so somehow as the years progress.  However, I can't imagine anyone else in the spot.

The fact that he stressed in his statement that this was an 'entirely voluntary' stepdown makes it strikingly clear it was not, in fact, voluntary.

Good.

I hate how one of my favourite shows is just riddled with a history of inappropriate behaviour towards dancers. I guess it's not surprising given the Executive Producer displayed such behaviour A toxic environment starts at the top.

There is so much demonstrable ageism in the near-constant nature of the Nigel detractions that I am willing to await the outcome.  I could also believe many other things about the accusation(s).  The man has not been proven guilty yet.

When you think of all the crazy accusations Mathews being the latest inappropriately texting a contestant and the proven conviction of Alex Da Silva the show would be more careful. There's an attitude on this show and it starts at the production.

I am so sad to hear Nigel got himself into some hot water. I found out that he has left the production BEFORE I found out he was going to be a judge this season (2024). I haven't been keeping up with this show, although I knew it was coming back this year. I REALLY wanted Nigel to sit on the judge's panel again. DAMN!!!!!!!

I loathed Siwa's judging.  So often she didn't say anything useful at all.  And she's just so look-at-me annoying.  Couldn't they have got somebody with some gravitas instead?

Well, Jojo is better than Leah. At least, she gave a little more dance advice. However, I don't really see her adding much.

They should have a hip hop specialist. I thought Dominic was pretty good. Not as good as Twitch but better than Laurieann Gibson.

Comfort is part of the prelims.  Too bad they couldn’t keep her around for the live shows.

Maks Chmerkovskiy on Joining ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ After Years of Challenging Judges on ‘DWTS’: I Was Mislabeled the ‘Bad Boy of Ballroom’
By Emily Longeretta   Feb 28, 2024
https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/maks-chmerkovskiy-so-you-think-you-can-dance-judge-dwts-1235925977/

Quote

“Challenge me, please! One thing I’m not is a hypocrite. I learned early in life that if you want to dish it out, you’ve got to be able to take it,” he tells Variety. “This has to be a professional exchange. Come at me with facts and knowledge and I’ll come back at you with how it really is in the real world, from my personal experience. I’m not going to say, ‘This is what my opinion is.’ No, this is how it happened to me. This is how you fail an audition, this is how you under-prepare, this is how you overthink. I’ve done all the negatives as well. I want to be the mentor to the young adult who is at the beginning of the 20 years that I’m at the end of.”

At the beginning of his career, he says he was a “stubborn Capricorn who did not listen” and had to make mistakes to get to where he is now. “Look, I’m here to mentor. I’m here to educate. I’m not here to demand attention. It’s not about me.
*  *  *
“You’re going to have to evaluate me and the job that I’m doing. I never go in thinking I’m the tough judge, so now I’m going to be tough. I think I’m a soft-ass bunny sweetheart, white and fluffy,” he said. “I think you all got confused. You all misinterpret me. Everybody misunderstands me. I lead with rainbows and unicorns and butterflies. And so somehow I’m the ‘bad boy of ballroom.’ I didn’t even know what that meant most of the time. I tried to be me and then you guys would be like, ‘Maks was an asshole.’”
*  *  *
This season of “SYTYCD,” premiering March 4, will show the dancers living in a house together and allow viewers to get to know each of them even more.

“In my opinion, last season of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ got away from that and it became a show about choreographers and who the choreographers are and how these contestants handle these choreographers and their choreography. It skewed so far toward another person,” he explains. “We want to bring it back and the production wants to bring it all the way back to look at this new batch of people that you’re gonna get to know, fall in like with, fall in love with and become a fan of.”

Allison Holker: ‘Now My Purpose Is Different’
AS TOLD TO JESSICA RADLOFF   February 29, 2024
https://www.glamour.com/story/allison-holker-now-my-purpose-is-different

Quote

That’s why I couldn’t be more grateful that So You Think You Can Dance opened this door for me and gave me a chance to come back to the show. They helped me discover that purpose inside myself again. SYTYCD started my journey when I was 18 years old, first as a contestant, then as a choreographer, and then as an all-star. And now I get to be a judge. They helped me rediscover, in a new capacity, that love of dance I’ve always had. They’ve helped me realize it’s okay to get back to work, which I love. They made me feel it’s okay to sit on a new side of dance. I’ve always judged dance, but never on this level. So they resurfaced this new energy in me, and I'm so grateful. But really, SYTYCD has been a home for me and a security blanket my whole life. And it’s doing it again.

Plus, I love that my kids get to see me working. Yes, there are times it’s really difficult, and the schedule is really complex with me filming in Atlanta and them in school in Los Angeles. But I have such a badass team of women supporting me, and celebrating me and my kids, making sure they’re at whatever they’ve got to get to every single day. The only reason I’m able to go to work is because I have such sound, supportive women cheering on our family. But I also don’t need my kids to think that I have it all together. It’s complicated, but we work through the complications.

I also tell myself that every season–whether it’s good or bad—has an expiration date. And if you can just get past those hard moments, you’ll find yourself. Plus, even the gray area is beautiful.

That promo reel is odd because Maks just seems really unsure of himself.  Odd. Odd.

I hope they don't go all Big Brother on us with the dancers living together in one house.  I wish they'd stick to dance and not personality and cheap dramatics.

I wish someone would do the show that Dan Karaty did in the Netherlands - the Ultimate Dance Battle.  Choreographers auditioned, picked teams and were given different styles.  It was so very interesting that, despite not understanding most of what anyone said in whatever language, I watched as much of it as I could find.  I don't know why it died after 2 seasons -- it was such awesome dancing.

Hard to find online, but here's an early beauty from the team that won that season:

And an early one from my favourite choreographer, Rinus:

I'd like to see them go back to the format where they pair contestants up, but with a twist.

The first few weeks pair up the  contestants that they think will do well  together. Same or complimentary genres. Similar heights and skill levels. Eliminate one man and  one  woman each week still so the numbers stay even. But then each week switch up the couples. Pair a hip hop dancer with a ballroom person, a tall woman with a short man, some same sex pairs. It would really show who is talented and versatile and wouldn't penalize a dancer who is paired week after week with a less talented dancer who keeps getting advanced because of their  personality or their story and  not their dance skills. I'm tired of hearing the sob stories,  I just want to see them dance.

Cat Deeley Says New SYTYCD Judge Allison Holker Is 'Not Afraid to Talk About' Late Husband tWitch (Exclusive)

“I think what she does brilliantly — and I don't know if I could do it, I have to say, I don't know if I could — she handles her three kids, she comes to work, but she's not afraid to talk about it and she's not afraid to talk about him,” the actress says. “The only way that we move forward from this is by everybody having an open dialogue.”
*  *  *
She continues: “Because the more people talk, the better it is for everybody. And the more you realize we can do something, we can help or the problem isn't that big, or maybe we can break it down to feel bite-sized, everything will be okay."
*  *  *
“He was such a good example of having a passion but not necessarily being technically trained,” she recalls. “He tried out three times. He tried out, he got ‘no’ twice, and came back. And he didn't win, but he went on to have this amazing career — he was on Ellen [DeGeneres's talk show], he was in Magic Mike. He was also one of the most genuinely charming, gentle giants of a man you could ever hope to meet.”

Another reason that their ratings were bad is because they did hardly any promotion of the show. I LOVE this show, and the only way that I knew the new season was on was because of this forum.
