Is this the job that Billy told Daren about?  If so this will teach Daren not to trust someone you've just met to dictate a heist to you. I can't believe Daren has started to trust him so soon.

Why is it that the only two people who seem to care about Lena are the psychopaths in the family?

Dad?  I don’t think Deran calls mom, mom.

so what do we have?  A large heist full of loot.  An very unreliable Billy.  Smurf who is now out of jail passively aggressively making threats and meatloaf.   We have Frankie who was kinda flirting with Smurf and we have Pope who thinks Smurf murdered Baz.

To the end cash users in the marijuana business chain, a bank willing to take the risk that the federal government won;t seize the federally illegal drug money. I guess the cash cargo plane was thought of a safer from hijackers than driving overland

That was low key intense, especially the last 10 minutes or whatever (the boys coming home and after).

I was waiting for the little squatter Mia to sneak in.  Smurf ain’t gonna be having that!

How many eps left?  We are over halfway thru the season, no?

Called it on the skydiving move.  Tough luck on the landing, J.  Done that once or twice myself.  Too bad they had to give up the gear, but you have to spend money to make money, I guess.  That was one tough mama out there on the desert.  I'm surprised she didn't meet them with a gun herself.

You can die any time, Billy.  Having to ride around the desert with a strung out junkie almost made me feel sorry for those guys.  That was a blunder dropping him off like that.  If he got caught trying to score at the truck stop, he might just roll over on them in a fit of withdrawals.  And then he hits Deran up for $230 cab fare.

Why do I get the feeling that if Smurf and Pope were to go swimming in the ocean all the sharks would vacate the area out of fear?

After the adrenaline rush of the day's activities, poor J has to suffer the borderline pedophilia that is Smurf.  Gawwwd.

I realize that this is a show...but, last night episode was a bit far fetch. First, exciting as the heist was, how believable is for 2 guys, especially J, jump out of the plane like experts? This had to be his first time jumping out like a Pro. Darin did it before at the beginning of this show with his brothers. Second, this isolated woman asking for $10 grand to  give them a lift. How did she know they were thieves and had that type of money? Also read that Aug 14th is the last show of this season, which means 3 more to gjo.

While pot is legal is some states it is still illegal federally, and so the big banks won't deal with state-legal "drug" money for fear of running afoul of federal drug/money laundering charges. So the legal pot business is mostly cash, the money was going to a bank that was willing to take the chances.

Wait, what? I thought Frankie was just trying really hard to ingratiate herself with Smurf. Hmmm.

I wonder if Lucy has set up her own con to get back at Smurf.  She knows that sooner or later Smurf may figure out that Lucy stole the money that Baz took and will come for her.  So, she calls Pope to Mexico and has her people spreading (false) rumors that Smurf had Baz killed.  Now Lucy can sit back and hope that Pope will decide that Smurf is a snake that has to be put down, and Lucy's can walk away with clean hands AND the money.

I don’t know if Smurf was involved in the hit on Baz, but I do think the Mexican jail visit Lucy arranged for Pope was super fake.  The guy had way too many “details” that it sounded rehearsed to me. Lucy is shady AF in my opinion.

I also didn’t think Frankie was flirting with Smurf, but just trying not to get her ass kicked to the curb.

I figured that the brothers had to take J on training jumps like Smurf taking him shooting and wondered what happened on that landing. But the Black Widow in the desert waiting for criminals to drop in with thousands of dollars in emergency cash on hand did cross the line. You would think that the cash flight was regularly high jacked by skydivers

That final scene between Smurf and her boys was gripping as hell. Finally! Now I realize what's been missing this whole season and why it felt so off until now. The interaction between Smurf and her boys is where the real story is. You separate her, and take her out of the equation, you have a completely different story. And one that's not nearly as interesting.

I mean . . . talk about awkward and tense filled. You just didn't know if she was going to take out a knife or a gun and blow them away at any given moment - and clearly, neither did they. They all had pants-shitting looks on their faces.

I cannot believe Daren is dumb enough to fall for this lie Billy is telling him about trying to take him with him when he left all those years ago. I mean, even if it were true, who cares? Daren would have spent his life on the road with a drug addict. Does he really think he would have been better off? I know Daren has complicated issues with Smurf but I just can't believe he's this desperate for a parent figure. Billy is so obviously a loser.

The boys are in real trouble now - they've got a 700K haul from that plane heist and no way to launder the money without Smurf's properties, now that J is no longer in charge of them.

Nope, there are 13 episodes just like the first two seasons. 8/21 will be the finale.

She's lucky it wasn't Billy because he would have just shot her, kids or no. But the fact of the matter is - J and Deran didn't have to shoot her to steal her truck. All they had to do was tie her up. Then again, if they left her alive, she could ID them. So she's lucky Deran and J are who they are.

I enjoyed the tense dinner scene at the end and that Deran skipped out in going at all to it. He needs to ditch Billy who will do nothing but drain Derna's bank account while also playing on his doubts/insecurities.

Billy is such trash. I laughed when Deran said no about calling him dad. I also don't buy that story he told Deran about why he hasn't been around all these years... it totally sounded like something Smurf would do but I don't buy that Billy thought to take Deran with him when Smurf finally got him out of her house, especially after that story of him locking Pope in a closet for somewhere between a day & a half to 3 days so he could score some drugs. And Craig's dumb ass is listening to that story and the one with Pope watching Billy & Smurf screw while laughing.

I also didn't see it as flirting. Frankie came on heavy but it came across to me like it was more about making sure Smurf didn't kick her out and trying to appear useful more than anything else.

Imo, i dont think Smurf/Lucy KILLED Baz. I'm betting there is some kinda twist... This season needs one.

And we know MIA is the shooter.. So what connection does she have with Lucy? Its like they really have to explain both sides.

Smurf being in jail and too much focus on Mia/Nikki killed the first half, now it'll get better when Smurf goes all out on Lucy/Marco... Still not buying Smurf killed Baz (too obvious) and you're right, the story has always been about the Cody's. I love their interactions.

Really hope someone knows the real answers to these questions.  So, do you think the plane was headed for Grand Cayman or someplace?  Can hardly be headed to any place in the US.

I live in Colorado and the problem of not having a place to bank $ from legal pot sales is all too real.  In this case, would any law enforcement agency have authority?  Had they robbed an armored truck, the grow operation could have called the state cops.  But the theft happens in the air.  Does the state still have authority?  Sooo.. To whom will the pilot report the theft?  Maybe that is why they hear nothing on the police scanners about the robbery.

Years ago someone did rob a plane and successfully disappear with the money, I think over Washington state, and was never caught.

How  would they have managed to have those boxes...coffins? ... put on the same plane as the money?  Was that some sort of regular cargo hire and not a plane owned by the growers?

I must be a criminal at heart...I would almost like to see more of the planning process, as we saw with the church robbery.

That plane doesn't have that kind of range for international flights beyond Mexico. It had to be some bank in Nevada or Arizona willing to fight the Feds. The money wasn't enough for their own private charter, or they just tried to save cost on a general cargo carrier going to some remote location

Maybe they too have a means of laundering money.  Maybe through a casino in Nevada.  In fact, that seems possible.

Sometimes people use a personal account or the account of another business, but that is a lot of money for a bank to just ignore.

I assume recreational pot is legal now in Nevada, so the theft could be reported to the cops there.

Even thought it seemed like an eternity, how long was Smurf actually in jail?

I thought that an episode or two back the two detectives said she had been in jail three months, but I'm not sure.  They were talking about how long they could delay discovery, which obviously bit them in the end.

2 hours ago, lazylou said:

I'm guessing that they scoped it out and found that the grow operators regularly sent the money on the cargo plane, and then they set up the coffin transport on the same plane, with appropriate identification and authorizations.  As always in television crime, everything happens just so, so as to make the heist possible.

I did some quick research, and it looks like that falls under the general category of air piracy, since the plane was hijacked, regardless of what was taken.  The feds would definitely get involved at some level.  If the Cooper case of the 70's is any indication, they would scour the general area of the hijacking (GPS pinpoint), looking for any evidence on the ground.

I wonder if Mexico was the destination. Mexican banks might not see a problem with legal pot money.

I think the woman in house in the desert were up to shady shit. Hell if they were near the border white boys with bags of money would immediately make me think drug runners or human traffickers. I do like that they didn't hurt her. Its shows that "We don't hurt people" isn't just lip service.

If fhey had actually looked like hikers, the woman in the desert would have probably offered them a ride.  She saw their guns and knew they were not your average  REI customers.  They hadn't prepared much of a story and really did look out of place.

Glad they gave her the money...looked like she needed it.

Is it just me or did Ellen Barkin's smurf look unually HHHOOOTTT in S03E08. I know that Ellen is in her 60s but I still think she look damn hot. But they tend to dress here down for the show. Her character is supposed to be a mom and grandma at her core and you cannot have her looking like Mr. Robertson. So int the most fo this season she was in jail scrubs. So that is a plain look. But when she got out last episode into here civilian clothes she was looking really tasty. Then all of this episode she was just looking really sexy in anything she had on. Was this just me or do any of you  guys agree?

As heists go, this one was a bit more puzzling than any of the previous ones we've seen. From what I can gather, the grow house transports their money under the guise of medical transport. How did Frankie manage to hijack whatever actual medical truck they were expecting that day? I mean, the plane was there waiting for a medical transport truck . . . what happened to the actual truck they were expecting? And if the boxes are supposed to have corpses in them, why do they smell so bad? (The guard asked how she could stand the smell.) Wouldn't they be on ice, or embalmed? Why would a medical transport be transporting rotting corpses? Or do they just procure dead bodies for the purpose of their subterfuge?

I'd also like to know how Deran and J managed to dig that big hole in the ground without shovels.

Quote

Every time Smurf talks to one of the guys it’s like she’s trying to fuck them.

She kissed J on the mouth. Kind of like the godfather. Also . . . I was intrigued when she said she moved all his stuff out of her room, and there were fresh towels on our new bed. Which turned out to be a twin bed. Did she put a new bed in J's room? Like remove a queen size and install a twin to punish him or make him feel small or something?

Another weird thing . . . that Detective seems to know the Codys launder their money through their properties. If it's common knowledge I would think it'd be pretty easy for them to prove that and get them that way.

They brought in Billy to fill up the 'space' of Baz. Up to now its shown that he is broke and desperate. Now that he hit the jackpot, what is there to keep him there, especially after Snurf, doesn't want him around?. The writers did not bring in Billy's character, just to get rid of him. I can't see where his character heading once he gets his share...then again, they dugged the loot, and it may take a long, long time for them to get it.

Link to comment

That was just one of those "oh, ok" moments that tv crime depends on.  Since the plane had a bit of other cargo on it, we can only assume that they planned a lot of the heist off camera, and found out that the cargo company would transport the corpses.  Why, who knows?  I feel sorry for the guard on the plane that would have to sit in the same compartment as those smelly corpses.

They did show J digging with a small shovel, but that indicates that they were planning on burying the skydiving gear and he would have had to carry that shovel underneath the gear.  ?.  But then, if it all went off correctly, they would have landed next to Deran and Craig (and Billy, if he hadn't been jonesing), who would have had shovels in the car.

That sexuality had always been in her toolbox. Best seen while bringing J into the family business and seducing the art dealer while looking for her mother's boyfriend to murder him.

With Frankie around basically doing the same thing with Craig she was able to up her seductive posse where as Nikki could not when Mia or Ren came around

Ellen Barkin was sexy and hot back in her Sea of Love days, but it looks like she's had some unfortunate work done and now her face looks like a plastic mask.  There are some shots of her where she looks absolutely hideous, and that's too bad.  She still has a great body though.

the money is transported in an armored truck, we saw it last episode. The medical truck was merely a ruse to get into the airport and deliver the fake cargo to the plane.

They had at least one shovel. J is using it in one of the shots.  It is one of those folding shovels and they may have buried it with all the other stuff, because they are using hands and feet to kick the final layer of dirt over the hole.

The detective followed J as he went from place to place taking out money orders to pay the rent.  That is why in a previous show J is going around making sure all the tenants know to lie about how much they pay and it is why the old lady had to go.  J makes up the remaining rent with stolen money converted into money orders.  They would have to be able to subpoena the books and J has two sets...one on the computer, one in the old fashioned journal.

I think the reason for the medical truck is that they were supposedly hauling coffins.  I expect an undertaker's vehicle would have worked too, but they did have two bodies.  Someone earlier explained to me that they would have been able to book the coffins on this flight because it is a regular cargo carrier, not something owned by the growers.

But I DO agree this is a complicated heist...I guess J must have had some practice jumps we did not see, for instance

I get that, but the pot growers have this set-up where they move money in the guise of medical transport. The people in charge of this operation were expecting a medical transport truck with coffins. So . . . did Frankie hijack that truck? What happened to its driver? Or did they just show up in place of the truck these people were expecting? What happened to the real truck?

I was confused about this, to, for awhile, but it seems that this is a commercial air cargo carrier.  Earlier we saw the money from the grow being delivered by armored trucks.  The boys have evidently arranged to send the coffins via the same carrier to the same destination at the same time they know the plane will be carrying money.  So if the security guy at the gate is looking for a medical transport truck, it is because that is what the Codys led them to expect.  What I wonder about is how the boys know where the money is going...but maybe Billy would know this from having heard while working at he grow.  The growers must have a bank or savings and loan willing to risk banking marijuana money, or maybe they have some means of laundering their money elsewhere. Maybe the money is going to a Mexican bank.
