S02.E01: Passing the Torch

The work hard/party harder gang is back for another summer in a brand new weekend house in the Hamptons with some familiar faces and surprising changes. Newly single Lindsay happily passes the “house couple” torch to Kyle and Amanda and two new friends join the group to make the summer family complete. Things get off to a rocky start when room selections occur without everyone’s input and tempers flare even worse when the house kickoff dinner turns ice cold. Then as Stephen prepares to attend Gay Pride back in the city he struggles with a decision to invite Carl for support. Meanwhile, Lindsay enjoys her freedom by having her way with a man on horseback at a polo event, as Lauren and new housemate, Danielle, navigate their complicated feelings about sharing a summer house with their common ex, Carl.

Carl is back and douchier than ever. Now he's a straight up drunk asshole. I kind of love the idea of two exes in the house, sharing their horrible experiences with him. just PLEASE don't either of them cave and hook up with him. 

Lindsey without Everette....hmmmm.. She's certainly on the prowl already. Does she look different to anyone? I couldn't place why, but she just looked "off". 

I thought Lauren was a bitch about the bedroom issue. Unless they agreed "first come, first serve", she should have waited until they were all there to discuss rooming situations. This ain't the Big Brother house. And her excuse that she had the master last year, so she is entitled to it again this year was super pretentious and illogical. 

I think I'm gonna love my some Kyle this year!

I am so happy this show is back.   I loved Kyle last year and am hoping he’s not going to let me down this year.  He and his girlfriend are cute together.  

Lauren was super bitchy about the room situation.  

I think Lindsay without Everett may be fun.  So much of her storyline last year was her smugness over having a boyfriend or her fighting with said boyfriend.  The one time I found her interesting last year was when they showed her calling her mom.  

Carl is just so shady.  I don’t get the attraction to him at all.

They need to use the Bethenny Frankel method and draw and select.  I don't know why anyone didn't find Lauren's rationale she is taller persuasive. (Goofball)  I do think the couple is better off on the main floor.

I'm not understanding Stephens (? that's his name, right?) reaction to Karl having a good time at Pride.  He wanted support, he got it.  Karl showed up and had a good time.  Better than being a stick in the mud like Stephen & Lauren.  S & L looked bored to death and bitchy.  I mean the first dinner was also a disaster with Karl & Stephen so was it just left over feelings from the night before?  Karl is a drunken douche but Stephen is way overreacting and giving Karl the attention he doesn't deserve.

There's a lot more going on with those two, I believe. Stephen mentioned they'd had a falling out or distancing of some sort between summers. So I think he's heading into "Bitch Eating Crackers" territory with Carl.

I'm surprised Stephen is back. He doesn't fit in. Why isn't he at Fire Island having a blast? I also think he may have a crush on Karl and this is where some of the tension is coming from. Who knows, maybe he and Karl hooked up one drunken night and Stephen read more in to it and Karl wants to forget that ever happened. What ever it is, something's not right.

Bichonblitz, totally agree. I think Stephen has had a crush on Karl for a long time and maybe acted on it and got rejected? That could explain why Stephen got so upset watching Karl flirting so much at the Pride parade. 

Already spotting really bad conversation editing in just the first episode. The conversation between Lauren and Danielle was so stilted, it was obvious that they edited what each of them said to give the appearance of static between them when there obviously isn't.  Also, same thing happened with the room assignment conversation. Lauren's dialogue was clearly edited to make it look like she gave really bad reasons for her taking the Master. Not that I don't think her reasoning was completely whack, but I don't think it was as bad as: I had the Master last summer,.....(awkward edit) so I should have the Master this summer too.

She definitely went blonder and I'm pretty sure she got her lips done, maybe something else. You're not alone though! I didn't even recognize her when she first walked in.

Interesting theory....but I'm glad Stephen is back. I didn't expect him to return but it's good to see him in the house. His commentary on the others' shenanigans is always appreciated. I still think him sleeping on an air mattress in the pool is funnier than anything else that happened last season.

I think Stephen can get real petty and really nasty if he feels slighted.  He made some rude comment that foreshadowed Lauren disclosing that Carl had lost his job, which made me give Stephen the side eye.

I was surprised how excited I was that this show was back.

However, I'm really not liking Kyle this season.  I didn't love him before, but he's, what, 34? and acting like a drunk fratboy and it just isn't cute anymore.  Amanda seems to tolerate a lot from him, and seems the more mature one in the relationship, and she's about 10 years younger than him.

I thought the whole bedroom situation was funny.  Everyone wanted the best room and no one deserves it more than anyone else, and so you're just sitting around waiting for the other side to capitulate...they should have just drawn for it.

Still hate Lauren.  Her obnoxious behavior about the bedrooms only added to it.  Does she fancy herself the star or something?

The new additions are interesting.  I want to know more about the guy who quit his job & traveled for 8 mos.  Since he's not working, does he get to stay in the house all Summer while the rest of the cast drives out only the weekends?

Like last season, I find myself ever more curious about their life in the city.

I also wondered the same thing about Lindsay last season. Her roommate kept fighting with her about their interns hanging out in their cramped apartment all day. Since she didn't have an office and was basically paying rent at two different places, why not set up shop at the summer house during the week? And this season too. If she's planning parties in the Hamptons all summer, why even go back into the city?

Laurens face scares me.... i feel terrible typing that. has she ever had work done. i feel like other than maybe a nose job that is just her face. i think its her eyes. they are always bugged out. otherwise this show is total garbage and i will continue to watch. :)

I don't dig Lindsey, but maybe she will be more bearable now sans Everett and sans acting like a sulfurous beeyotch to Christina.   have a sense Everett might make a very special guest star appearance this season, tho.  Hey guys did you know she runs her own PR company? Haha

Danielle and Amit seem like promising additions.  Is Amit's hair gray? In the lighting I couldn't tell if it was grayish, blondish or light blue.

I was wondering the same thing about Amit. I hope he gets to stay there the whole summer. I work remotely myself, so I'd totally be spending the whole summer at that house if I were one of these folks.

I was cracking UP at the continuous footage of Lindsey on the pony ride at the polo event.  Like tone it down, you're in broad daylight.

I can't stand Lauren's fast talking.  Further to that I see her and all I hear is Carl..Carl..Carl..Carl..Carl.

I don't like the striped off the shoulder play suits they wear.  I don't think anyone finds them attractive.  It reminds me of coming out of the Windrift in Avalon in the late 90s when shorter (like mid calf) capri pants were popular again and I overheard a guy saying "what's with all the short pants."  Like why do girls wear all that stuff?  Not cute!

So not that I think Scheena and I ever share the same taste in guys, but I do not understand the attraction to Carl. I think he’s sort of mediocre  looking (there’s always been something a little off about his face that bugs me) and he doesn’t strike me as particularly funny or bright or interesting. He just seems like a completely average guy, which would be fine, even good, if he was also nice. However, he’s an enormous asshole. What do people see in him? Does he have money?

I sort of get it. I don’t agree with it exactly, but I think I sort of get why Stephen is fed up. I think he wanted Carl to be there for him (similar to how Lauren was right by his side the whole day talking to him about how he felt) and Carl made it about himself and his own need to be the center of attention. Because Carl is a narcissist sociopath.

i also think something happened between Carl and Stephen off camera and now he finds himself in a similar position to Lauren’s last summer where he knows rationally that Carl is just using him as a way station until he gets bored and moves on, but Carl gives him just enough that Stephen keeps hoping it will be different. Add to that the dynamic that Carl is straight (or is straight in public or something) and has probably kept whatever is going on with them juuuuuuuust this side of sex and Stephen’s fears about being rejected based on his sexuality.

also add to this mix Carl’s obviously spiral with alcohol and maybe drugs. I’m about the last person to go sober cop, but I’ve thought Carl had a drug issue since last season and he’s an angry drunk and he’s drunk all the time now. 

All of that together and I think Stephen is just miserable at having to be around Carl.

Yep, that's the nuts and bolts of it for sure!  Nicely written.  Weird Carl was always scratching the surface;  no one bothered to look too closely at him.

I think Kyle is perfect for this type of show because he always manages to keep the Peter Pan antics from being aggro and excessively drunk-sweaty the way, say, Carl is. His overgrown fratboy personality is the stuff of VPR, but his messiness is never quite as dark as them. I probably wouldn't find it cute in real life, but I do find it entertaining without the heaviness that usually goes hand in hand with "alcohol-induced Bravo antics."

I think she´s gorgeous and looks like Madchen Amick.

I forgot this show last season and only saw the first couple of episodes. I´m so glad that there´s only one twin this time, I don´t like twins on reality shows for various reasons.

If you remember from last season, Stephen liked to stir things up and pout a lot.  I think that's mostly what is going on here, he probably sees this as "his character".  He's passive aggressive and likes to be miserable.  I'm sure something happened with Carl off-camera, but I think Stephen is blowing it out of proportion and  trying to milk things for the camera.

 

As for the rooms, Lauren sucks.  Kyle was completely right, trying to fit 8 people into 6 rooms only makes sense to have the couple/people sharing a room get the king size beds.  That Lauren even thought she should have the room for her bs reasons show how self-centered she is (I can see her being excited and claiming the room when she first got there, but once people start showing up you'd think she'd realize she was being a dick and be more diplomatic in the situation).  But, she's the worst.  I'll be interested to see how she handles conflict this season without her sister there to gang up with her and attack anyone who goes against her.

 

I don't understand the appeal of Carl.  At all.  Maybe it's a New York thing and there really aren't a lot of options for women, but he looks like a giant, slovenly goof-ball.  I don't understand why all these women are attracted to him (except for the fame that comes from being on this show).

 

Amit seems cool, and actually intelligent.  He made a great argument for not playing in the girl's lame "Marry, murder, F" game to try and stir things up.  It would be great to have him as the audience proxy for the season (a rational observer commenting on all the stupidity).

All my life, I've seen this; if someone's very tall and lean, they get away with murder! They don't even have to be the smartest to get "the job!" I've met plenty of idiots who're tall and amiable; and that's where it begins and ends! Carl's accustomed to people just eating his $#!t so he doesn't feel a need to change! Sooner or later those less than obvious charms are going to fail him! Lauren just reinforced his lame opinion of himself when she got right back in that bed with him! She's such an insecure piece of work and quite pathetic! Her sister has to be cringing watching this mess now! Her rationale will not play to more sensible people! ;-)
