Kat finds herself questioning her identity as she continues to spend time with Adena. Jane is horrified when she is tasked with writing Scarlet’s sex column – especially when her story turns intensely personal. And Sutton is given an opportunity to advance at Scarlet, but questions if it’s what she really wants to be doing with her life.

I'm pretty far out of the target demographic, but I watched anyway. It's summer and I'm not excited about any Netflix offerings. I don't have an opinion about this show just yet. I don't hate any of the characters so far, but I'm finding it pretty unbelievable. I will watch again next week.

I liked it well enough (felt very "Freeform") but don't understand why basic brunette is situated as the lead (sort of) rather than the excellent Aisha Dee and her far more interesting subplot. I suppose the second episode felt more ensemble-ish but Aisha should be centered and the other two should have subplots instead, I think.

I was wondering if anybody else watching this. So far, it's OK, but the plot with her friend removing the egg while they were in the closet at work was just stupid.

The egg extraction was dumb, for multiple reasons, but that's totally something that would happen to me. The difference is, if I couldn't get it out, I'd be back at the sexologist's immediately! My friends would be like, uh, no.

Dan Jeannotte! He was the sex columnist who liked Jane. I loved him as Mary's half-brother on Reign.

Question for Freeform regulars: I'm no prude at all, but I was a little surprised by the orgasm/egg/porn/sex position topics in the second ep (not to mention the Sutton/Richard antics in both). Is his normal for Freeform? Isn't this a vaguely family-friendly channel? The last show I think I watched regularly was Chloe King (unless Monica the Medium counts) and that was much more tame. Bizarre that this ep was followed by the 700 Club.

When they changed to freeform they wanted to rebrand and age their audience up a couple years.  They've been edgy for a while (the fosters had a character have an abortion last season and has openly addressed teen sex both hetero and homosexual) but teenaged character edgy.  This pushed things a little further.

I love how supportive the boss lady is.  It's so nice to see strong female characters that don't knock eachother down.

I work in magazines, and for a TV show, it's not the worst with the work stuff. Only for a TV show, though.

She's a little too dream boss for me, but given that she's based on Joanna Coles and Coles is an EP, I don't expect this to change.

I'm not thrilled with the assistant sleeping with the money guy, but at least he's in a different area of the company.

The meet-cute in the elevator between Jane and the sex columnist was dumb, and I'm not sure how I felt about her going up to him at the art show and planting one one him. I know they're attracted to each other, but if the genders were reversed, I think I'd be calling foul.

The egg getting stuck was a giant ripoff of Miranda having to remove Carrie's IUD on SatC, so I gave that the side eye.

In general, though, it's nice to see supportive female characters, and for a dumb summer show, this one at least tries to address some issues in a way that isn't condescending.

I spent the whole first episode laughing like crazy -- normally when we weren't supposed to do so.   This is pure summer drivel to me.   Not as good as Younger, but something that isn't a rerun.   Disappointed that I missed the second one, but the DVR is set now.   (And I agree that so far the brunette writer is the least exciting of the three.)

Younger also did it with Liza having to help Kelsey remove her Diva Cup in the office bathroom.

I thought this was a fun summer show. I think that the super-nice boss makes a nice change from the monster boss ladies I'm used to seeing on TV or in movies. And I like that my popcorn show this summer can be a group of women being over-the-top supportive instead of catty or backstabbing. I did kind of role my eyes at the 'proud Muslim lesbian' coming from a nameless oppressive country since it annoys me when shows don't even bother to come up with a country instead of a generic regional vibe. It's just lazy. However, I thought that the one girl's storyline dealing with a non-sexual crush on her was interesting since it's kind of exploring areas of gray in a way I don't see a lot of.

The whole egg storyline was absurd, but the one thing running through my head when they were removing it was 'what, do you not have BATHROOMS in this place?' I was half expecting someone to walk in looking for a dress and interrupt them.

I liked it and not just for a summer show. Based on the first 2 episodes, I'd watch this any time of the year. I am familiar enough with getting your start in NYC that this doesn't feel as unbelievable as others may seem to think it is. With a sister and best friends having done this, I'll say that half of their best friends to this day, almost 20 years later, are the people they started out with at various NYC firms. So, the friendship, the supportive nature, the fun, the guys, climbing the ladder at work, the relationships, the trying new things, going out of your comfort zone, all rings fairly true. Of course this will be somewhat of an exaggeration since it's TV, but I'm not thinking it'll be as out there as some of the other comments make it seem.

I think Melora is a good choice for the Joanna Coles editor character, but I'd really love it if they tailored the look of Melora to what flatters her specifically, rather than what Joanna would wear. I've shaken my head multiple times already at fashion choices on Melora because I don't find them to be the best fit, yet I'm positive I've seen the exact look on Joanna and she was definitely working it. So, inspired by Joanna would be good, but not copycat if it's not as flattering on Melora would be great. In terms of her temperament, at the end of the day, even if it's not completely accurate, for the purpose of the show I prefer the supportive boss to the likely more accurate portrayal. And while I doubt JC is considered some dream boss the way it's coming off on here, she also does not have a big Devil Wears Prada type reputation, so I don't mind that it's being shown so positively. And she does have a reputation of being supportive of women and feminism and a goal of getting women's magazines to be taken more seriously.

Don't think this was perfect, some things, like the egg, didn't land, but pilots and the start of a series are rarely perfect and shouldn't be judged so harshly when they aren't in my mind. I'm looking for good, good enough, or promising in a pilot and this was both good and promising. Seems so often to me people have amnesia about how their favorite shows started out. This was a solid start, I like all 3 of the leads, though I've also liked or loved all 3 from previous projects. I like several of the supporting characters and I hope they are used liberally. I'm happy this lighter fare is on and I hope more like it make it to the regular season. I won't refer to this as summer fluff especially since I've started to realize that it seems only shows with female leads get that moniker.

Minor pet peeve - and this happens on entirely too many shows. Sutton's from Harrisburg? Don't have her be from Harrisburg and living at home while attending Penn State. Just because both are in the middle of the state doesn't mean they are anywhere near each other, in this case, it's a good hour and a half away and that's in good weather, which State College is not known for having. Goodness gracious how long does it take to look up something like that before including it in a script.

They had Kat remove it because that was how she figured out she wasn't a lesbian. It was stupid.

If I never see a "bestest girl friends plow each others' vaginas to retrieve lost objects" plot again, it will be too soon. I'd really love to know what's going on in the lives of these writers, that they think this is a common part of female friendship.

Well this has happen to two members of my family so I found this funny and true. My mother had to remove a cousin's tampon that had gotten stuck (she forgot she had it in and had sex which moved it up further into her vagina) this was in the early sixties; and my daughter removed her cousin's cap in the late eighties. This apparently happens more than any of us wish to say. I'm just glad this missed a generation (me). But then again we were raised that you should be close enough and have enough trust that you should be able to show you mother a pimple on your anus (sorry,TMI).

Samantha removed Carrie's diaphragm- not an IUD, I thought it was funny as Samantha stated "I just had a manicure".?

It did happen to me, and lemme tell ya, it's no fun and kind of scary. That said, you just have to, like, push, I guess using the same muscles you'd use for childbirth. But no close friends had an epiphany about their sexual orientation in the process.

This show is terrible but there's nothing else on right now between Sunday nights.

Penn State has many campuses and not everyone attends and graduates from the main one. There is a Penn State campus in Harrisburg.

Yes, clearly I know that since I know Penn State or I wouldn't have been complaining about it. But when a show or almost anyone not in state of PA refers to Penn State, they aren't talking about the other campuses in the state which they barely know exist, they are talking about the main University Park campus. Heck, even in the state, no one says "Penn State" and means anything but the main campus, they will tack on the other campus' location if that's what they mean.

Link to comment

That's not my experience. Most people here use Penn State to refer to either the whole school regardless of which campus (especially if talking to people from outside the state), or State College for the main campus. Either way, the show's reference is technically accurate which is more than a lot can say.

A black woman lead?  Ha ha ha -- don't you know that black women are scary; they have to stay in the background or fragile white male egos crumble.  That's like saying that Nicole Beharie should have the lead on Sleepy Hollow instead of Katia Winter!

I know that if that happened to me I'd be asking a bestie to help me out, because with my shitty insurance it's about $200 just to walk in the door of the clinic [no copays = full price :( ], much less whatever they'd charge for removing an egg/diva cup/diaphragm/etc. I know a couple friends that would do it to help me save on a dumb doctor visit like that.

This was my exact thought during the first 2 episodes.  Lead chick is not charismatic at all.

I'm glad they fixed the boss' hair.  Her hair style during the first ep was absolutely dreadful.

I don't think Freeform is necessarily afraid of a black female lead though--they had Addicted just last season (though it didn't last).

I graduated from Michigan State and I knew people who did about an hour and a half to two hour commute each way. They generally tried to schedule their classes all on Mondays/Wednesdays/sometimes Fridays or Tuedays/Thursdays. They also had to deal with Michigan weather. So while tedious, it isn't that uncommon.

I enjoy the show, but I still find Jane to be the least interesting of the three ladies. I find that I am more interested in Sutton and Kat's storylines than Jane's.

Freeform seems pretty committed to diversity, IMO. Of course it's not perfect, but I think it's doing a lot better than most channels.

Good to hear!
