SECRETS AND LIES – Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate a missing person’s case in a small town. The lead witness tells the Winchesters the attacker was a man with the head of a goat. Sam and Dean aren’t sure what to believe but when the witness goes missing they realize the town is hiding a dark secret. Writer: John Bring, Director: Phil Sgriccia

It feels more and more like a winding down, end of the saga, what with the boys speculating on whether they'll be remembered.  I don't like it.

Also, the bastard took Dean's picture.  Bad move, Ketch.

That was predictable.  Dean getting knocked out, dropping the colt, Sam picking it up and getting the kill.

Remember when Dean survived a year in purgatory and took out entire vampire nests.

Maybe Dean should just retire.  Sam can do everything.

This was a mixed bag for me. I liked the camera work and directing and even the little bits of humor.

I liked the horror aspects, I found the Black Bill costume (especially the scene where it was just sitting in the house) very creepy. I liked the Sheriff character, it was refreshing to see someone turn against their corruptive family practices.

I didn't like how obvious the bad guy was, figured it was plant manager from his 2nd scene

I didn't like the fact that once again Dean needed to be saved/rescued.

I didn't really like the B plot with BMOL breaking and entering into Sam/Dean's place. I really didn't like the music they played during the BMOL Plot.

The ending was a bit weird and way too nostalgic but, at the same time sweet. If I didn't already know the show was renewed I would think they were leading up to a series finale.

I'd say this one was mostly good, with a few bumps along the way, solid B.

Mr. Ketch is dead to me.  Why are they bothering to bug the bunker if their goal is simply to KILL THEM. Just KILL THEM. This is stupid.

Also, as if Dean isn't going to notice that his picture with Mary is missing.

Mr. Ketch, meet me at camera 3: Dean will stab you in your face, you dumb shit.

THERE ARE LITERAL GOSPELS written by GOD about you and Dean, Sam. Why on earth are you saying that history doesn't remember guys like them? THE BOOKS ARE STILL ON THE INTERNET. This made no sense.

There was a musical written about you and Dean, Sam that YOU and Dean were part of TWO YEARS AGO.  That is such non sensical writing

Black Bill was creepy, I just have to get that out there.

With Pete and the family they're continuing the storyline of humans can be just as bad if not worse than demons.  They've really been pushing that this season.

Ketch's lie about Mick seemed to raise some red flags for both Sam and Dean.  Look at their reactions, they think something's up.  And Ketch, not a smart move taking that picture, they're going to notice, and there's going to be hell to pay.

Dean didn't appear to care that the colt just appeared out of thin air.  I can't see them allowing him to notice his picture is missing

I enjoyed it.  Lots of Sam and Dean, which is always my preference.  A good monster story that definitely had me creeped out.  Plus, Dean managed to fit in a little nookie on the side.

The plot is definitely thickening with the BMOL.  I wonder if Ketch is having a bit of a conflict over his feelings for Mary?  It's hard to tell, though he definitely didn't seem to like what Dean had to say about him at the end of the episode.  I wonder if Dean will notice the picture is missing?

All in all, I was entertained.  I'm not sure if the reminiscing at the end was meant for someone at the BMOL to hear and realize they're not the bad guys.  Of course, if only Ketch is listening in, it's not going to matter.

I enjoyed this one. We've seen the bad guy on Supernatural before as another character, right? He looked familiar. I liked the carving initials bit at the end. What can I say, I'm a sucker for Winchester bonding. If someone else took over the bunker, who would it be? Good creepy goat thing, some good lines, Sam looked really attractive shooting the monsters. Classic simple monster storyline. Ketch sucks. I'm waiting for a "Sam and Dean knew the bunker was bugged the whole time" reveal. Please let the boys be smart.

Yes, but nobody reads those:)

I liked this episode. Give me a good MOTW any day of the week over long-drawn out weird story arcs.  Apparently Dean is back on his game, waitress wise.  But, that was on seriously bad pick up line, LOL.

Yes, I agree, why are they bugging and spying on them, if they are supposed to be killing them?  Why is Dean worried about reporting to Ketch.  Just don't.  What do the BMOLs really bring to the party anyway?  Sam and DEan could have found that case on their own. They've been doing that for 12 years.

Except for Marie who wrote an entire musical based on them.

Plotonium 101 solely to set up the boys carving their initials in the table. Sorry that is just lame.

Dean's pickup game is SO MUCH better than the stupid things he said in this episode. He is NOT awkward when he picks up women. He also doesn't stare at them like he's never seen a woman before. That was terrible.  Dean is smooth. He smiles at them and then goes and talks to them.

I did not enjoy this episode.

I agree that they're bugging the Bunker to get whatever intel they can on the Winchester's associates...like Jody, Donna, other hunters, etc.  I also really want the boys to catch on to them quickly.  Dean keeps that gun strapped to the bottom of the table, maybe he'll have a reason to take a look under there.  The bug is certainly easy to spot...the damn thing was huge!

I think we've seen him be a bit less than smooth at times.  But he's cute, so he gets away with some of the corny lines he throws out.  He doesn't come across as a lech like some men.  I didn't have a problem with it.

I hope taking the photo means that Ketch only has an obsession with Mary. Unless something is written on the back on the photo, there is no way he's going to have a suspicion that there is something funky about Mary.  He had an odd look on his face when he found the photo - like he realized something.

I wish they would change the locks on the damn doors. Some of this was predictable. I kind of suspected sending the Winchesters on a mission would give them time to search the place. Also I suspected that the monster might be human. I didn't think they have both a human and a god. That goat head on someone wearing flannel kind of threw me.

Not that they should waste the bullet, but after Ketch started talking about the colt, I thought, I hope Dean shoots him with it.

I really hate that they're taking assignments from the BMoL.

Sorry I will die on the Hill over Dean's way with women.  I've never seen Dean be less than smooth when he's serious about picking someone up. The awkward happens when HE'S hit on first or when he's shot down. I cannot think of one time when he was awkward in his flirting.

He was starstruck with the porn chick but aside from that.

That was just not funny or cute IMO. Dean looked inept at EVERYTHING in this episode. I mean can't he at least keep his flirt game?

Don't even get me started.  Larry(?) told Sam that the key that was in the box was the one and only key and you could not get in without it.  Well, we have the BMOls with spare keys, the Steins breaking in, Sam and Dean were able to get in after they gave the key to Kevin and Kevin got trapped in there in Sacrifice, plus they are always coming and going separately.  He also said that it was warded against every evil that ever existed.

He already knows that Sam and Dean are her children. Maybe he's trying to figure out why she looks EXACTLY the same now as when Dean was a 4 year old. Maybe he doesn't know she came back from the dead?

Maybe it has something to do with HIS mother and he's having some weird Oedipal thing and jealousy over Dean with Mary.

If she's supposed to be 30 and look 30, he would have to know something up is with that.  I think I remember the BMOLs discussing that she was back from the dead, though.  Maybe in Mamma Mia.

I didn't find him all that awkward.  He spotted her, flirted with her with eye contact for a bit, and then made his move.  The line about the hot coffee was silly, but it was just corny.  He wasn't acting nervous or awkward, IMO...I think it was more eagerness than anything else.  I was happy to see he hasn't changed much.  I find that much more appealing than all of the lame comments about how over-the-hill he is.

The gun under the table has been used a few times before.  My memory stinks, but I know it was used in the first episode this season, and I think it's been used in prior seasons, as well.

Yeah, I didn't think he was nervous or awkward at all.  I just thought that was a really bad line.  But, that's not necessarily a bad thing.  They're probably really aren't a lot (if any) good pick up lines.  It's not like he asked her if it hurt when she fell from Heaven, or asked what her sign was.

I thought the scene where Sam was looking down into the grate in the basement was very effective.  I was sure something would either grab at him, or that the sheriff would make some sort of move.  I didn't know if he was a good guy or a bad guy at that point.

This episode creeped me out a lot more than I expected.  Who knew that just sticking a goat head on a guy could be scary?

I was somewhat astonished that, yet again, Sam ended up saving the day.  I don't get it, unless they are building up to such a humongous Dean win that they feel they need to balance it out with multiple wins for Sam up front.  Problem is, I can't think what would be big enough that it would trump killing a Prince of Hell, a Goat God, and whatever else Sam has taken out along the way.  This lack of balance is getting ridiculous, and I'm saying this as someone who tends to favor Sam as a rule.

The whole time Dean was flirting with the waitress, I couldn't help thinking that 'Man, you've got three kids and you're carrying on like this?'  I do realize that the character and the actor are two entirely different people, but they are approximately the same age, right?  That level of horndog just seemed weirdly off for a grown man.

I hope the boys catch on quick to what the BMOL are up to.  I loved the smart, competent boys, when they broke out of the prison.  I want to see more of them.

- Dean & the waitress: Well, it's good he had one nice night where he could lose himself for a while.  And seriously, did the pickup line matter?  They had already shared enough looks to know where things were heading.

It wasn't just the pickup line.

Dean seemed borderline weirdly needy for her attention. IMO he kept looking for her as though she was going somewhere. It was weird and awkward.

Dean was NOT a happy man in the beginning of the episode and he was a stressed out ball of worry when he was trying to call Cas.  He's upset and IMO he has a BAD feeling that something is wrong with Cas. Sam keeps giving him the 'Don't worry, Cas will be fine. He always is' .....which BTW, guys, you must have a strange notion of what is "always fine" when it comes to Cas.  He's NEVER fine when he goes missing. Dean knows this

I got to thinking upon rewatch if maybe he was sublimating his worry over Cas by hooking up. That has been something Dean has done a lot in the past. When he's stressed out and worried and feels like things are falling apart. He even told Sam straight up in American Nightmare when Sam said "You're sublimating" Dean said "Yeah, that's kind of my thing".

Now that I'm thinking about at in a different light...maybe that's what that was all about.

Had to watch this one late after sitting through a sixteen inning Mets game...at least they won!

About average MOTW, I thought, but elevated by the legacy/initials scene at the end. I take catrox's point that it doesn't make total sense, given that Sam and Dean do have an in-universe book series about them, but given how much they hate Chuck's books, I can see that they wouldn't see that as any kind of a meaningful form of remembrance, even assuming the books last for a lot longer than they seem likely to based on their canonical lack of popularity. There's a ton of forgotten books out there, including ones that were much more popular in their day than the Gospel of Winchester. In any case, I'm willing to do some fanwanking to make it work when the scene is good.

I do fear for the bunker...and Cas...and Eileen...and Sam and Dean's other hunter friends. The MOL in the bunker made my skin crawl, and I very much hope Dean kills Ketch by season's end.

As for the bad: Sam and Dean have to be hit for the stupid stick for me to buy that they don't change the locks after finding out that every MOL can get into their bunker. I'd be fine if they had taken precautions that failed, but dudes, you KNEW the uber-sketchy organization had the keys to your home. I also really don't like them saying that they are "reporting" to Ketch. Unlike a lot of others, I have no problem with the Winchesters taking cases from the BMOL. But part of my defense of the arrangement has been predicated on the idea that they aren't simply falling into line or agreeing to a position as BMOL subordinates. You tell me about people in danger, I kill the monster is a mutually beneficial arrangement for two parties who are, at least ostensibly, both dedicated to saving people. "Reporting to" the smug, untrustworthy, unscrupulous Brits is something else, and while we haven't yet seen evidence that they are writing up formal reports or doing anything else other than what they would have done anyway, I wasn't fond of the vocabulary.

I must say, even with all the issues I have with the BMOL storyline, I'm really invested in seeing how it turns out.

That's what I was getting from it. That Dean was entirely not into this case, because he'd rather have been looking for / trying to find out more about why  Cas had gone AWoL... along with Dean being annoyed about BMoL involvement, too*. And both of those things together made for an antsy, distracted, Dean, in my opinion. So once Dean made sure Sam had it in hand, he went for - pretty much needed - the distraction the waitress provided.

* I remember an extremely sarcastic comment in there about the BMoL from Dean.

Okay. Tomahawk, Wisconsin has a Harley Davidson plant. So no, not quite a company town. Still, it looked as if it could have been some small town in North-Central Wisconsin. (Also, kudos to Mr Ketch for pronouncing Wisconsin correctly.)

I'm easily amused; that whole "we have a God in our basement" exchange made me laugh. Dean grumbling that Black Bill was a pirate's name made me laugh.

It looked to me as if Mr Ketch was trying to figure out why Mary looks the same age.

Mr. Ketch's interest in Mary is very creepy, it goes beyond sexual and seems rather obsessive. I suppose that makes sense, a psychopath probably doesn't experience love but can understand possession/ownership/desire.

A few more thoughts, there was a point where Pete gave the "family business line" and the look on Dean's face was great. I always say, Jensen is a fantastic actor because he can convey exactly what Dean is thinking just by his facial expressions, no words needed.

I agree.  Mary looking young is one thing.  Mary having not aged since that photo is another.  She probably qualifies for a BMoL kill shot.

I really did laugh out loud when Sam got the kill shot with the Colt in this one.  I'm not sure whether this is some deliberate build up by the writers, or if they're still playing catch up, but it has gotten laughable at this point.  I'm surprised no one asks about that at any of the cons, it's that obvious.

As for getting knocked out and tied up, that's pretty much a regular occurrence for both Winchesters.  They have to be fallible to add to the drama, but at times it is a bit ridiculous how easily they're overtaken by whatever monster they're after.

I hadn't really thought about Dean just going through the motions, but that makes sense.  It would be better if the writers gave us even a small hint that he's still upset about the Mary situation, but I guess it's too much to ask for.  We have absolutely no idea what sort of relationship they have with her now, if any.  He obviously is concerned about Cas' absence, and even though Sam said Cas would be fine, even he looked genuinely concerned.  Cas is back next episode, so I wonder if he'll just show up and lie about where he's been, or whether we'll get the Heaven story right away?

I agree that Dean absolutely needs to get the kill where Ketch is concerned.  That needs to happen, and the sooner the better.

She actually has aged in that photo.  That photo is 12 years old.  Samantha Smith has aged like any normal person would.  I would think looking younger than Sam and Dean (which she most assuredly does not, but she's supposed to and I think we're supposed to suspend disbelief on that) should have been enough clue.

I was sure that when Cass looked at the books Chuck wrote about the Winchesters, he was certain that they would be known as the Winchester Gospels.  Dean even said they are like the "new new testament (which was hysterical).  I don't think the writer researched the canon for the Goat dude episode.  There would be no way that Sam and Dean would be having a whole talk about not being remembered.  I realize they probably wanted to elicit some emotional response to the writing of the initials on the table but to destroy canon for a flashback is so uncool.  This was a bad episode all the way around and I usually love most episodes.

All that is fiction, though, "fans" don't know Sam and Dean are real people. However, I think it's good that Sam and Dean don't have such big heads they think the world revolves around them. It seems like they should since they seemed to know quite a bit about Sam and Dean at the start of the season. Maybe the organization knows about Mary, but Ketch never really read all the "research" like Lady Toni did? I'm assuming Ketch just has an unhealthy--and totally creepy--attachment to Mary, but it is a possibility that he hasn't put it together that Mary is a revenant. More proof the BMoL intel sucks?
