I thought we had a thread for this already, but I couldn't find it. Weird. It must have gotten merged with something else when they were doing clean up some time back. Anyhoo, I have a hard time picking favorites; It always changes with my mood, but I'll give 'er a go.

Favorite Male Character: Probably Rufus
Least Favorite: Hmm...was never too keen on Balthazar, Raphael or a ton of the "boss" angels from S9 and S10. 

Favorite Female Character:  Ellen, I think
Least Favorite: I dunno, maybe that werewolf chick Kate from S9 who came back around in S10?

Favorite Episode: Hard to say, pick almost anything from S2 and it would be a contender.

I've been putting off replying because, frankly, my brain doesn't work this way.  I have a favorite song, but not movie, book, tv show, food, etc.  But even my favorite song, it's not like I hear it and say "That's my jam!" or anything like that.  It's a song that has spoken to me for the last 25 years and nothing else has ever come close.  So trying to figure out my "favorite" is... well, it's almost like asking me a question in a foreign language.  But I'll give it a go.

Favorite episode: probably Nightshifter

Least favorite character: Cassie (between the script and the actress I just couldn't see her ... plus she dumped Dean...makes her tragically foolish)

Least favorite episode: easy Man's Best Friends With Benefits (my apologies for saying it out lou)

Least favorite season: none - I'm telling ya, I love this show.  There's a few clinker episodes but I'm just a happy viewer

So, you can see, picking is not my thing.  I find something to love in just about every character and every episode.  The only thing I'm REALLY committed to on this list is that the writers owe us all an apology for "Man's Best Friends With Benefits".

Okay, I'll try...I'm really not that good with remembering specifics about episodes but here goes:

Favorite male character: Sam.  by a hair.  :)  But I love Dean.  I really love Dean.
Favorite male character other than one of the leads: Garth.     
Least favorite male character: Hm..I recall really disliking Boogertron at the time.
Favorite female character: Most of the 'Good' ones: Jody, Donna, Ellen, Jo...I even liked Bela and don't really mind Claire.  Much.  :)   But right now?  Donna.  Because she's happy.  And the boys need more Happy.
Least Favorite female character: tie between Ruby 2.0 and Amelia.
Favorite episode: Not sure I have one.  I like most of them.  
Least Favorite: There's probably one is S4, S8, or S9 but it brings up bad memories to think about them, so I just block them out.
Favorite season: What @Diane said.
Least favorite season: S8 for the endless Amelia flashbacks and S9 for the bitchiness.
Favorite season premiere: Most of them, because the boys are back on!
Least favorite season premiere:  We Need to Talk About Kevin, because that's when we learn Sam not only didn't look for Dean, and wasn't extremely happy to have his brother back, but also just ditched Kevin.
Favorite season finale: None of them because even when it's bad, I never want it to end.
Least favorite season finale: Whenever the last one will be - because that will be The End.  [sniff]

Warning: I'm a diehard fan of the first three seasons and more of an ambivalent, still love the show but less so viewer since then, but I'm recently in an obsessively pro-SPN phase and couldn't resist trying to challenge myself with these lists! 

Favorite male character: Sam. No, Dean. Or maybe Sam. Seriously, I can't pick!  As far as minor characters go: Hendrikson, Gordon, Crowley 

Least favorite male character: Probably various angels and demons whose names I can't even remember :)  

Favorite female character: Jody, Ava, Bela, Ellen 

Least favorite female character: Amelia

Favorite episode: Literally about 95% of S1-S3! In general, I prefer the slightly funnier, lighter or case of the week episodes to the more angsty, serious myth arc ones 

Favorite season: In order - 2, 3, 1, 7, 6, 5, 4, 10, 8, 9 (I haven't watched enough past S10!)

Favorite premiere: I'll always hav a soft spot for the pilot

Favorite character: Dean Winchester. I am not a Sam hater, but it is Dean all the way. Without doubt
Least favorite character: That Cole something. He was introduced in season 10. 
Favorite episode: Quite a few!! Actually I have favourites in each season. Pilot, Faith, Mystery Spot, It's a Terrible Life, Baby, The Vessel and many, many others.
Least favorite episode: Bloodlines,  very closely followed by The Hammer of the Gods.
Favorite season (s): All!! Even in the my least favourite season I have episodes that I love to re-watch.
Least favorite season: Season 4 (Couldn't understand Sam behaviour towards Dean. Still, nothing prepared me for the Purge speech in season 9)
Favorite season premiere:  Lazarus Rising. I also liked Amara's introduction in Season 11. 
Least favorite season premiere:  I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here (I have serious issues with the direction the story took starting with Dean's controversial decision). Also, The Magnificent Seven

I find it so amusing that no matter our preferences on the boys, or disputes about who did what to whom, that we are almost all universally united in our dislike of the character of Amelia. LOL!!! And I definitely join that list.

LOL.  I thought about it for a moment.  Went through my head on which female character I disliked most.  Yes, there's some evil female characters, but some of them came around in the end to be tolerable in some way.  Some of them I just didn't hate for some reason.  I guess I just didn't like the way she treated Sam at first.  Kind of snippy and rude and it wasn't warranted IMO.  Maybe I will feel differently when I re-watch the episodes with her in it as I've only seen them once, but considering I'm not the only one feeling this way, I don't think that's going to change my view on her.

I have re-watched those episodes and as soon as the "dreamy, gauzy, brighter screen" comes on, I love and use my fast-forward button. I'm surprised I haven't worn it out. LOL

TBH, I can't say I either liked or hated Amelia. She was just there. What I didn't like was how those flashbacks would bring the episodes to a screeching halt. I wanted those flashbacks to help me understand Sam more, but sadly they just kept showing me stuff Sam had already told us in the absolute most boring way possible. Granted, Purgatory flashbacks weren't very revealing either, but at least they weren't boring as hell.

The only good thing about those flashbacks was shirtless Sam in bed.  As long as you can pretend that Crazy Lady wasn't there.  And I've gotten pretty good at that.  ;)

I like Amelia.  Yeah, she was bitchy about the dog, but she was grieving, too.

In order from earliest to the most current I would say Tall Tales ( the slow dancing alien was priceless!), Mystery Spot, Wishful Thinking which was mostly due to Audrey and her suicidal teddy, and Just My Imagination (she's got Sparkle on her face!) were the funniest eps IMO. There are of course more that are meant to be comedic but these are the only ones that made me laugh more than a few times.

I warmed up to her a little after we were shown flashback in Hunter Heroci when she was so earnest in trying to get her father's approval on their relationship. I do believe that she cared for him but after her intro with the awful way that she ripped into him when he brought the dog into the clinic I wasn't sad to see her go.

Just out of curiosity I tried it. Interestingly, I found myself grading some episodes from earlier Seasons higher than I would have at the time of first viewing. But knowing that grade would be given to some later episodes, the rating rose up. Some Season 1 and 2 episode escaped the "hated" rating like that.

Also, the "pretty good" category spans everything from actually "pretty good" to "whatever, didn`t particularly dislike it" for me. And for an episode where I hated half of it but loved the other half, I split the difference and gave it a higher grade. Which kind of throws the results out of whack but I didn`t want to do more sub-categories.

Season 1 - loved: 6,  really liked: 3,  pretty good: 9   disliked: 4,   hated: 0  

Season 2 - loved: 6,  really liked: 4,  pretty good: 6,  disliked: 6,   hated: 0

Season 3 - loved: 1,  really liked: 5, pretty good: 7,   disliked: 2,  hated: 1

And I think I went opposite for some reason. I was a little harsher I think in retrospect for some seasons - I think maybe I was a bit harsh on season 4 for example - than I likely was on first viewing, because once I knew where the season went, I looked at some episodes with that knowledge. The first time through, for example, I might've thought "Okay, surely there's a good explanation for that that we'll get later," but when later we didn't actually get a good explanation or one I hated, in retrospect I wasn't as forgiving of the episode the next time around... Maybe in the future I'll try to look at season 4 again and try grading each episode without considering what happened later, and see if that makes a difference. I think it probably will.

I could say the same for season 8, but for that season, I was already wary/disliking it the first way through in most cases. It just didn't get any better to change my mind much.

I likely might've been just a little harder on season 1 than I might've been in the past also, but for a different reason, because I've seen some of those episodes so many times.

Interesting. I don't think I have an episode like that. I think it's generally an over all thing for me with the episodes. But maybe that's another thing I should consider in a season 4 redo, because if there was any season it could happen in, that would probably be it.

Okay, I needed a distraction so I did it too. At first I had to change the criteria because I always think "hate" is too strong a word, but then I got to S8 and realized I needed it was just fine. I don't know about his work on the other shows. But I do find his directing on SPN visually simple and pretty similar to Singer's.

I haven't watched anything else he's directed, except a couple eps of Lucifer, and my problem with him is he doesn't have his own style, everything is some kind of rip-off homage to one director or another. The worst example, is, of course, Stuck In The Middle (With You), which is in the bottom five all-time episodes for me, probably the worst for directing.

Really?  I love that episode.  And I hate Tarantino movies.

Pretty much every director since the 1990s rips off earlier ones.  With the possible exception of Kim Manners, Tarantino, Eastwood and a few others.

I actually think Jensen’s directing (mostly) sub par to Richard’s.

LOL, well you know I'm going to disagree with that.  Apart from the fact Jensen wasn't given much to work with in the episodes he was given (Soul Survivor excepted) he did well. SITM(WY) was a hot mess. It was obvious what he was trying to do, it just didn't hit, IMO. Way too much needless repetition of the scenes/POVs for a 42 minute episode of tv.

100% agree! Script for SITM(WY) wasn't good at all. But Richard's directing made the ep much worse than it was supposed to be

And again I strongly disagree. In pre-Dabb seasons  most of directors on SPN were doing great job without copying someone else: for example, of course Kim Manners, but also Phil Sgriccia, Steve Boyum, John Badham, Guy Norman Bee, John F. Showalter, Stefan Pleszczynski, Thomas J. Wright, etc.

I had to go watch Stuck in the Middle again because I couldn’t even remember the episode.  It gets rave reviews on IMDb.

Gosh, this is what viewers want?  Slow mo, Circling cameras and stereotypical situations?  Nothing original or interesting. Reservoir Dogs this ain’t.

See again I disagreed.  Yes, the script could be much better.

Maybe I see it differently because I’ve never watched a Tarantino movie.

I do agree that Jensen had top notch directing for ‘Weekend at Bobby’s’ and ‘Soul Survivor’ was magnificent.  And there were parts of ‘Atomic Monsters’ (specially the beginning & ending) that we’re very very good.  Maybe it’s the quality of the scripts, like S7s ‘Girl Next Door’, that lowered the quality of the directing.  I don’t know, and I certainly don’t claim to be film making expert, I just know what I like.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about filmmaking directing/producing/etc.

That said, IMO, it's hard to critique directors of SPN, because each episode had a different writer. And especially the later seasons, because after Kim Manners and Kripke, it didn't seem like the next showrunners had any kind of vision for the show beyond the story arcs they themselves wrote.

I would say Jensen and Jared took on a lot of responsibility (totally unofficial, unintentional, and possibly unconscious) for the characters' continuity.
