i read Derick's little crazy rant and truthfully, I didn't understand it.  I was raised IFB and am a Christian now. In other words, I'm familiar with Christian writings.

I really didn't understand it.  It was either poor writing or poor subject matter pretty badly?  not sure but it didn't make much sense to me.

Derick needs to work on his writing skills...he weaves around too much and doesn't follow points through.  Much like his own life.

I take the post as a sign the show was cancelled. Truly, The End Of The World is neigh!

Quote

“God wants us to rely fully upon Him. We should not derive our security from man or anything manmade.”

I bet they still lock their doors at night, oh, and are followed around by armed guards.

Jill is an idiot for saying people in CA are more open to the idea of eternity - because their lives are shitty and short. Spend a night int he ER, nurse Jill. Shitty things happen every second of every day, even in God's favorite county, America. The locals likely put up with Jill and Derick for a piece of free candy, nothing more.

Let me get this straight... Not rely on money, but these two do not mind being a couple of famewhores on television or asking people to donate money so they can help others. Fear is a great motivator because those poor people are in constant danger where they live, so they need to be saved. Do not rely on man or manmade weapons to protect you, but they have armed guards because they are special snowflakes trying to help others see the light and turn their mind, body and souls over to Jesus. And lets not forget, they are marriage counselors because they have been married for a few years and are experts now. A couple of obnoxious, hypocritical, know it all, judgmental famewhores.

I find the idea of two people who profess to be experts on marriage (who only ever had one relationship, a maturity level in their low teens, and this "relationship" was  a micromanaged never allowed to be alone sort of courtship at that) laughable.

I know plenty of good, decent, moral and religious people who are good examples of marriage, and not all of them are going around claiming to be experts and that they have a monopoly on virtue.  No reputable church would let Muffy and Triple D conduct a young marrieds Sunday School class; those classes are always taught by people who are at least mid 30's and older. Plus, a big component of maintaining a successful marriage is how both parties handle adversity and disappointment. Jerick haven't collectively had the sort of adversity that those who live in the real world deal with, though to be fair, Jill dealing with what was done to her by Josh and Derick losing his dad at a young age was something I'd never wish on anyone.

I think in some ways they have been through a lot: Derrick's Mom's cancer, quick long distance courtship to marriage in months, get pregnant right away, difficult birth, molestation scandal, fleeing to Danger America, family show(gravy train) being cancelled, whatever's going on with Derrick's health, rumors of Zika and/or miscarriage. There's been a lot going on in their marriage so far. But that doesn't mean I think they're qualified to give marriage guidance classes at this point (or classes in anything). And Derrick continually fails to be anything other than a nuisance (at best) to the people he's "preaching" to and irresponsible and dangerous at worst.

Typing that out, you'd think their segments of the show would be more interesting, even in a trainwrecky way, but no not really. They really manage to be the Dullards.

  • Love 3

Yeah, they have been through all those things as well. By practical life experience, I meant having to survive the revolving door of the job market (rather than being coddled and getting everything through "connections' ) , actually living away from home intellectually and emotionally, and being married for 10 to 15 years to qualify to teach about marriage in Sunday school.

  • Love 3

Oh, but their one year and 363 days of marriage qualifies them to minister to BROWN couples, because as they note in their own mission statement: People in Danger America need help with their marriages. So why not have a couple married less than two years counsel them? /sarcasm

FWIW, I've been married 20 years longer than Jerick, and I don't pretend to be a marriage expert to ANYONE. I hate the arrogance of these two; they're basically giving a finger to the people they proclaim to help.

  • Love 10

I assume that their version of marriage counseling consists of "love Jesus and have lots of babies," so they don't need any substantive experience or knowledge.

Oh, and apparently relying on your own money, instead of taking money from other people, is for suckers. I'll just add that to the long, long list of ways I'm not living right; it will go after wearing pants and telling men what to do.

You also used the semi-colon correctly. Derick could use all of the editing skills he can get; I can't believe he actually wrote a senior thesis and got a passing grade.

I went back to school late in life, but I graduated before Derick. My alma mater (pictured in my avatar) required theses or capstone projects from all graduates. Then again, I went to the top public university in the country; I guess there's a reason my school continues to rank up there with Ivies. I guess OSU isn't known for their rigorous academic programs. I'll take my liberal arts degree from a Top 20 school over whatever OSU gave Derick any day of the week. :D

I guess they don't even require Freshmen to take at least one critical thinking/writing course? I know you can test out in high school, but SOMEWHERE along the line, even an accountant had to write at least three essays to meet a basic English requirement. Right? RIGHT?????

One of my offspring graduated from the same institution, Sew Sumi, and no capstone or thesis was required in the early 2000s for undergraduate.  There was an honors thesis option which she did, but many who were eligible did not.  There was some English or writing requirement on the OSU list.  I can go look again.

ETA:  English composition 6 hours along with some social science that usually involves at least a little writing.

I said the poster used the semi-colon properly! It was to contrast against Derick's poorly-written meanderings.

I am an English teacher. Derick's writing is not what I expect of someone with a college degree; that led to what kind of writing requirements his school required of him to graduate. I think those are valid questions when we consider this guy has declared himself a preacher, and preachers must write sermons as part of their job, unless they can speak extemporaneously like a handful of incredible public speakers who can pull a speech out of nowhere, anytime, anyplace. Derick isn't that guy.

True. But I'm thinking he might be marginally better at it than Bin .... ; )

I'm guessing they both sought out Duggars to marry at least partly because they figured it'd give 'em a leg up on their preacher dreams. Guess they knew they were going to need help with that. ....

Hee, I meant just one Freshman English class that typically requires two or three essays. I am at the community college level and ALL students who want to transfer must take what we refer to as English 1A, which is one semester of Freshman equivalent English. And yes, I've seen Engineering and Accounting students (among other non-liberal arts majors) in my classes. Or they can test out by taking an AP class in high school.

Is getting a degree from a public university in CA really that much harder than in OK? I'm just flabbergasted, but that's just the educator in me coming out. I can't imagine acting in any professional capacity and not being able how to articulate yourself in writing.

Good grief, now Jill has published her Ode to JBoob on the Dillards website - another looong list of wonderful memories. It now comes across almost like a competition between Jessa, MEchelle and Jill. Are we to believe they each coincidentally had the same idea this year to write these long-ass odes? Are the other 18 kids each going to do one too?

I'll throw my tablet across the room if Anna writes one about Smuggar.  Thanks for the warning.

More proof that these girls are doing everything in their power to keep their show, and hopefully get their parents more than cameo airtime. IOW, they're really trying to resurrect 19 Kids (minus Josh). But the Duggarfam FB posted his favorite bible verse maybe a week ago, so I think they're really testing the waters with him as well. Ugh on all counts.

I don't like insulting the places people live, but Oklahoma and education ... well ... http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/education/oklahoma-ranks-th-in-education-week-s-annual-education-quality/article_a576531c-a659-53e0-8e41-9e1fad8e5155.html

"Oklahoma finishes 48th with a D+ grade in Education Week’s annual rankings."

They probably do have certain basic English requirements, though. And honestly, Derick writes as well as most Americans, as far as I can see. And especially when your whole school system is lagging, most are going to let somebody with his level of ability get by with a pass, since there are many many people in way worse position -- most of whom probably can't do math either, while he can -- to worry about helping. The snarking on this forum about Derick's writing comes from people with, as far as I can tell, way way way above average writing abilities and written-word snobbery.

Derick's writing style annoys me because it wanders around and doesn't get to the point easily.

If his grammar isn't perfect or he uses simple words, that's acceptable, somewhat. But a preacher needs to be good at GETTING TO THE POINT AND GETTING THERE QUICKLY.

Derick's writing style is very reflective of his life style...floating around like balloon heads.  (I imagine Derick and Jill like ballons).

I agree that he doesn't have the thought processes to make a good preacher. .... But it's also true that his university wasn't educating him to be a preacher, as far as they knew, so I don't think we can necessarily blame them. They were educating him to be an accountant, mostly.

I have to say that I'm still not sure he's a whole lot worse than the average, even among preachers, though. I just heard a sermon a couple of Sundays ago -- first one I've heard in a while. And it was from the head pastor at a large and very popular church, too, recently actively recruited from several states away, a guy in his 40s, with significant experience. But it seemed to me every bit as rambly and pointless as Derick's creations. This one rambled around, covered the same ground over and over, was -- or at least seemed -- quite long, and yet never made more than one point that I could discern. Worse, it never actually explained that point or made it at all clear to me. When the guy was done, I had absolutely no idea what it would actually mean to do what he was exhorting us to do and I didn't even know how he got that particular exhortation out of the text he was supposedly preaching on. There was no reasoning in the sermon that I could discern and absolutely nothing concrete. The guy did get all fired up a few times, though, so I expect that in that, at least, he would come out ahead of Derick as a speaker. Since I didn't know what he was driving at, though, I wasn't too moved by his being fired up.

Luckily for everybody, though, I doubt that Derick's going to get his preacher dream. And hopefully even his preaching as a "missionary" won't persist for too long. ... Or he'll get better, maybe? Unlikely, I suppose.

Churchhoney, you just described every sermon I've ever heard. When I was really young, I just assumed I was too dumb to understand and I would when I got older. Still waiting.

Derick thinks he's being deep and thoughtful by cobbling together Bible verses and then free-associating into judgment, making points and then abandoning them, and ultimately making zero sense whatsoever.

Dillards share anniversary letters.  Not exactly romantic poetry.  However, I am surprised that Jill did not invoke God in her letter, Derick however, could not resist.  Though I am not sure why these people have to share everything that should be private.

Jill "open-minded?" Excuse me while I go laugh until I puke.

She also opened with a bible quote, so she got hers in as well. Also, she has the handwriting of a 10 year old.

"Your wifey for lifey?" You've got to be kidding me. If I ever said that to my husband, he'd take me to the ER to have my head examined.
