It was my understanding that the texting, emailing and such were wedding planning details. Now, it may be that it's baby stuff at this point. But at the time of the single interview that I think we are basing this all on, they werent at that time married.

I imagine a lot of people think it's sweet that she comes in to eat lunch with him. Doesn't his mother work at Wal-mart too? It's possible that some days she joins them.

From comments I've read here, it was my understanding that she did - but I don't have a source to cite. Personally I believe she IS bored. But maybe we're reading too much into things. I must admit I don't know any other newly-married women who repeatedly call, text, e-mail etc their husbands during the workday. Of course, all the newlyweds I've been acquainted with have BOTH been working people. Does anyone else know a bride who - in the last 20-30 years - never worked outside the home before marriage? Or quit working immediately after the wedding to stay home? My mother was married in 1955 and it was very routine then. But these days? Definitely an exception, I'd say.

So right you are about the working before marriage. My mom & dad were married in 1949. My mom continued working til she was pregnant with my brother in 1952. I think she said it was almost a given when you became pregnant, you were expected to leave your job. My aunt, who really needed the money, kept working til further along in her pregnancy. My mother-in-law worked full time, took college classes at night to graduate to become a teacher (no online classes back in the mid 60's), while raising 2 young boys. I think she too, hid her pregnancy, because they needed the money. Boy times have changed.

What would Jill do if Derick had a job where he couldn't check emails or texts? There are still jobs out there where you have to put away your cell phone when you walk thru the work door.

I happened upon her resume a while back (LinkedIn, most likely) and found that Cathy left Wally World a few years ago. She now works as a consultant; I believe she is self-employed.

Why would Derick take Jill to see a child's fairytale stage show?

Broadway nerd here - Cinderella is probably the least offensive thing currently onstage.  The dancing is largely benign, the story is largely "wholesome," and no one's costumes are defrauding.  Plus Jill has the mind of a five-year-old anyway, and we know they like Rodgers and Hammerstein since they let the kids watch The Sound of Music.  Plus, as was mentioned before, it's selling at like 50% capacity right now so you can get rush tickets for low prices without having to camp out.

I can't think of anything else that would meet Duggar standards, except for Les Miserables, and I think that storyline is a little too sophisticated for Jill to appreciate.  Everything else has revealing costumes, music with a beat, dancing that isn't ballroom style, etc.  (And I bet Matilda would be considered to be condoning "witchcraft.")

As far as Jill's being bored, I don't think she's necessarily bored - I think it's more she still has that teenager "OMG can't be without contact with the bae 24/7!" infatuation stage (since she's only been able to really spend any time with him for a few months) going on.  I find it more concerning that Derick is willing to text and facetime with his girlfriend when he should be working.

There was a Duggar wedding countdown clock in the corner of the frame in another TLC show I was watching, plus several commercials with scenes of "the wedding we've all been waiting for." A countdown clock! The median age of the Duggar audience must be 16.

OK. I was watching 90-Day Fiance. The Duggar clock was part of my punishment.

I could have this wrong, but didn't Michelle (or one of the other Duggars) say at one point that while Derick was at work Jill continued to "invest" in the lives of her siblings? I took that to mean that Jill often goes to the compound during the day to take care of the younger kids.

What about the lion king or Matilda? Sad that Jill is 23 and has the mind of a 10yo. Michelle and JB would never take any of their kids to a Broadway show. Too expensive for a family of 21 and ungodly

Also her siblings come to her. Jill needs to move three hours away and get away from her parents

It looks like TLC is having a Duggar marathon tomorrow starting at 6 am leading up to the Wedding of the Century at 8 pm. Just in case we missed anything. Drinking game anyone?

I'm not working today or tonight, so...whoohoo! Sounds good to me.

I wonder how Jill feels when she knows the whole world knows she was a virgin and the exact moment she lost her v card.

Also, a covenant certificate doesn't prevent divorce nor makes it harder to divorce. You can file in a different state. Currently only three t states has a covenant certificate. And whose going to do the counseling JB and Michelle

we really do not know if Jill is bored unless the words come out of her mouth. Some of us may have been bored as a stay at home mom but that does not mean Jill is. And if her siblings visit, etc., unless it bothers Jill what is wrong with that? They are her family...and it is apparent she loves them.

We were "surprised" she went to see Cinderella, how do we know Lion King, etc., is not on the agenda? We are not privy to their social calendar.

[snip] Yes we are...the Duggars announce where they will be on Instagram every day. The Dillard's sell their every move to People magazine. It's hard NOT to know where they are at all times if you're on the internet.

Again, if you're a theatre geek, which my son is, there is no shame in going to see CINDERELLA. Its considered a top notch show. MATILDA is great too, but tickets are much more difficult to get last minute and LION KING is more expensive.

I really don't see what the big deal is about them communicating with each other during his work day or meeting for lunch. I know plenty of couples who do this occasionally or regularly if they have jobs that make it possible. I have to believe that Jill would cope if Derick took a job where he wasn't reachable once he got to work.

I think Les Mis would curl Jill's crispy hair! Sure, there's a wonderful message of redemption, but she'd never make it past all those OMG prostitutes!

What about the lion king or Matilda?

Lion King = Africa = paganism. "Circle of life"? What godless Shaman came up with that nonsense?

I agree with WTFFF (above) that Matilda is definitely too occult. My husband declared the movie "Carrie minus the bucket of pig's blood."

I'm sure Cinderella is a good show and it's great that Derick introduced his wife to Broadway Theatre. That's a hopeful sign. However, it's sad that two adults have to limit entertainment choices on the basis of possibly being defrauded or exposed to something "sinful" like dancing. I assume that at Oklahoma State Derick was exposed to literature and possibly live theatre. Now he has to limit his choices to what the Duggars find acceptable. That may wear thin after awhile.

How do we know this? They are a married couple. I doubt Derrick asked Jim Bob if he could take his wife to see Cinderella.

Did I miss this conversation somehow?

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe this is just the start for them. Maybe NYC becomes a yearly tradition for them and they'll check out all the various shows over the years. It's possible he started with Cinderella due to ticket prices and because both of them kind of know the story. They may work their way up from there to Les Mis and whatever else over the years. Obviously Derick doesn't have a problem with dancing and music -- I mean he was his school's mascot so he was exposed to the band and cheerleaders at every practice and game. So I highly doubt he will say "oh no -- can't take my wife to that show, there are heathens dancing in that one." All of Broadway has music and dancing -- if they were SO morally opposed, they wouldn't even have gone to Cinderella. And I think Jill will not mind having her world opened up a bit. I'm not suggesting she'll suddenly be ok hitting a nightclub or dancing with her husband, but I think she will be ok watching such shows -- appreciating the music and dance and costumes and lighting etc. from a distance. As much as she is fundie, I think she can be open minded and esp. when it comes to things Derick wants to do; she has shown more than once now that she'll eat Nepali food or hummus or whatever without turning up her nose because he likes it and she's willing to try it and decide she's ok with it too. I think it'll be the same for lots of other activities -- Broadway being just one example.

That's how it was for my parents too. They were married in 1955 and Mom got pregnant on her honeymoon. She worked until she was about 6-7 months along.  Something she told me - years later - was completely OK with her employer [a Fortune 500 company]. She told me her doctor pushed her to quit work more than her employer. But she was never bored during the days alone when my Dad was working.  She was never bored a day in her life.  After she had raised her kids - and even during that time - she always had interests, hobbies to pursue, books to read.  Family and friends to call, see for lunch, daytrips in the area etc.  Except for her still-at-home siblings, Jill apparently has none of those things.

Who cares that he took her to Cinderella? Why do they need to go to a more grown up show? Maybe they both talked about what they wanted to see and decided on it together. [snip]

How much was Josh making at the car lot? And what happened to it now. I remember they also use to post on social media to come to the lot to get a car.

IIRC, at one point it was mentioned that the car lot had 3 locations now and maybe as many as 9-10 employees? I believe it was during a show that showed them moving the car lot back to its original location. Or possibly when Josh was getting organized for his move to DC.  Can't remember - they do tend to blur together since so much content is repeated show after show. It was my understanding that the car business is still going strong and would have supported Josh/Anna & family just fine.  Not like a $100K FRC job would of course, but still respectfully.

I don't think people are snarking. Just curious..

Because they didn't cost JiimBob any money?

Then why won't they just get married by Jim Bob or at a damn courthouse. Feeding your volunteers punch and cupcakes when they had to do 1000 plus root bear floats and other things is just tacky.

It's not tacky when you are going to turn around in a month's time and volunteer for someone else's wedding.

I realize if you aren't part of this culture it sounds dreadful. But volunteerism is part if what makes this a community.

Gothardism equates music with a beat to the devil. Pretty safe bet that Jill is not going to subject herself to anything too lively. I'm not being snarky by suggesting that her entertainment choices are, like her clothing, guided by her strong religious principles, which, realistically, are limiting. Just as she's not going to be seen in even a one piece bathing suit anytime soon, she's not going to buy a ticket to all but a very few shows that meet her moral standards. She's not about to check her beliefs at the stage door.

I see this wedding being about Jill, and if she wanted catering I am sure her Dad would have provided. But that is not who Jill is.

This is her wedding, not ours.

I know what you mean, GEML. My mother and I helped out at many wedding receptions for friends at church before I had my own and each family we helped over the years came and helped set up for my reception.

I think where others are seeing the "tackiness" is inviting 1000 people you couldn't possibly know that well and expecting these people to set and cater your entire reception for you without offering them any recompense. At each reception I helped with as a kid we always were given a meal from the family or a handwritten thank-you note from the bride and groom for taking the time to help. This may have happened with the Dillards wedding, but we'll never know.

I grew up with a church that had an Altar Guild that could provide volunteers to weddings BUT you had to pay the Guild for their time. The Guild then used the money to fund the group but most was given back to the church. Do Baptist churched do the same thing? I imagine the Duggar still got lots of free volunteers but I would bet they had to pay for church help.

Link to comment

Since when have the Duggars ever returned the favor of volunteerism??? Since when have they actually volunteered? Without TV cameras around to capture it? They don't even attend that church - so really are they part of that community? *That* is just one of the many things I find tacky about the situation. There is no chance in hell of the Duggars ever doing something like setting up chairs for someone else's wedding.

If the Duggars aren't praying on street corners, they aren't praying.

Cinderella certainly doesn't meet their standards. There's no father figure in the story, the step-mother is the boss and her biological daughters are vain and flirt with the prince, Cinderella talks to animals (I don't consider this witch craft, but many do), a fairy godmother (AKA witch) grants Cinderella's wish to go to the ball and transfigures a pumpkin into a carriage, Cinderella defies her step-mother's orders to go to the ball, she dances with a man she's not married to and KISSES him, she stays out past curfew, and ends up marrying prince charming without him asking permission from the nonexistent father or going through a courtship.

Even writing this out I feel ridiculous.

By standards I meant no music with a rock beat and modest dress. She was probably assured in advance that she woudn't be defrauded. As for the subject matter, It's an innocuous fairy tale with a happily ever after ending. Jill is no doubt familiar ith Bible stories featuring considerably more wanton behavior.

It's not tacky. It is just a different way of doing things. I've been home all day with a migraine watching the marathon. I never really watched this show much in the past but this board made me curious about these people. I just don't see that these are bad people. Jill seems lovely and very mature for her age in many ways.

I don't think just serving cake and finger-foods is tacky. I am Baptist and only one of the many weddings I have ever been to had a full-course meal. And in that case, the wedding was very simple and sparsely decorated and the reception was very nice and more elaborate. There was no booze, however.

Not everyone has the $$$ to pay for a wedding and a reception with a meal.

I do think in the Duggar's case they are just trying to be cheap when they don't have to be. And thank-you notes are a must, especially to the people who helped out with the wedding, but who knows if they even get written.

Hmmm. From the side the dress looks so much prettier. It looks really plain and frumpy from the front. The modesty alterations ruined what could have been a pretty dress. The high neckline and the way the lace hits her makes it look like she has saggy boobs. Also, since the dress doesn't fit properly, she looks like she has a stomach and wide hips.

Also, why didn't Jim Boob get her gummy smile fixed? He has the cash and he likes his family on TV.

Also, for all the hoopla of sewing the ties, they couldn't get Jana a fabric that matched the bridesmaids' dresses better??

Edited for a typo.
