Artistic Gymnastics: Stick the Landing!

Recommended Posts

The thing is, it isn't game over...and that's a problem. Tutkhalian is still in the top 5, and that seems wrong to me. You landed on your butt...get out. It reminds me of how Paul Hamm had a spectacular fall and still won overall gold.

I remember that. that was rage on my side of the teevee. and I agree. like that's part of the problem I have with this CoP (same with Figure Skating I remember in Torino that Chinese team completely crashed and bailed but still won silver. oi).

Aly's beam makes me itchy. but she stuck it for the most part. she's gonna be back in 2nd.

Did Aliya even have an acro series in that? There was a huge wobble between her front aerial + back handspring.

No, and that is why her score was so low unfortunately.

I was never taught to put my hand over my heart for the anthem in the evil public school system, and I was raised during the frikkin Cold War. I still don't do it. I think facing the flag and respecting it with silence while the anthem plays is plenty patriotic.

Well to be accurate, the indoctrination is really for the pledge of allegiance, because most schools don't play the anthem. But we get that at ball games from games played at the school level all the way up to pro sports stadiums.

The hand on heart for the pledge apparently started during World War II, because the earlier version was something that looked more like a Nazi salute. Seriously. The current manner is described in something called The U.S. Flag Code.

And as that first link reveals, we only even HAVE the pledge because of... a socialist.

Stupid NBC. I don't mind Beach Volleyball, but I'd like to be seeing some Gymnastics now instead.  I'm sure they are "saving it" for Prime Time, right?

As a swim fan, even I'm irritated with the  number of damn semi-finals we need to sit through while waiting till 11:40pm for gymnastics to start. It's so bad I almost feel like I should apologize for being one of the people NBC is catering to

See, this is what makes me mad.  NBC is showing 22 HOURS of rowing on one of its sister stations, but because gymnastics is SO popular, it gets just THREE HOURS TOTAL!!  If fewer people followed gymnastics, we would get 10 times as much TV time.  Got it?

Does that beam score feel low? Given how clean the routine was, with only the hop on the dismount and maybe a missed connection during the routine, it feels like it should have been a bit higher. Team Drama is bringing it.

Aly in third. A little surprised by that beam score.

Judges have been pretty stingy across the board today. I wonder how that will translate into Aly's and Simone's floor routines.

Freaking NBC's stream buffered during Aly's routine. Looked pretty solid though.

Gabby is my favorite Olympic AAer of all time, but Simone is a close 2nd. The 1990s gymnastics was so easy compared to today's.

If Aliya just spins dead-eyed around the floor like she did in the team event, I really hope Aly passes her.

Even if Aliya hits, she won't beat Aly if she's clean. She doesn't have enough difficulty.

I watched some repeats of the NCAA finals a couple of weeks ago. Aliya's routine is reminiscent of what I saw from the college girls.

I never want someone to get hurt, but if you need your coach to stand beside you for every trick, you shouldn't be doing them.

Ditto.

Aliya's routine just seems so simple compared to Aly and Simone. There's just something electric lacking in hers.

she looks like she wants to be anywhere else but in Rio.

Yeah, that was an ugly floor routine. She fell out of her spins, etc. She must not have the stamina to get through the routine.
