They had me in the trailer when Martin Lawrence was like 'Who DOESNT want to kill (Will Smith's character) Mike? I should be on that list!'

January 10–12. 2020 Estimates:

The 1917 expansion comes at a great time for it, just after winning at the Golden Globes and with Oscar nominations being announced tomorrow. Just Mercy does pretty well for a drama without major awards buzz so far. Kristen Stewart has another mainstream flop, but principal production on Underwater wrapped in Spring 2017 and is a 20th Century Fox property, so it's not like Disney had any reason to go all out promoting it.

For something that got such terrible reviews, that still seems high.

It still has RDJ fresh off the Avengers franchise and the special effects don't look cheap, at least. The reviews would hurt a kids movie a lot more with something more obscure, like an Oogieloves or Uglydolls.

Universal must have known they had a turkey to release a family movie in January instead of Christmas. If they hadn't had Cats to push to Oscar glory (LOL), I wonder if Dolittle would have gotten a holiday release after all. The reviews would have still been bad, but you'd have gotten two weeks of kids out of school, and if they didn't want to see Jumanji: The Next Level again...

Who ever would have guessed a year ago that Universal would make the most money this winter from a World War I movie led by up-and-coming actors?

I have to give it up to Knives Out for having impressive legs. I waited a while to see it, and when we went on Saturday, we got the last two tickets. That's something I expect to hear about a new movie, not something that has been in wide for nine weeks.

Apparently, a lot of people are going back to see it multiple times. They weren't shouting the dialogue along with the characters or anything, but there was that "knowing" vibe in the crowd, and I noticed when the lights came up at the end that a few were dressed in homage to one of the characters in the movie. There were Chris Evans sweaters and Jamie Lee Curtis red pantsuit approximations that I don't think were coincidence.

It's all a bit mystifying to me. I didn't like the movie very much, and wondered if it really had one of the five best original screenplays. But obviously people were ready for a murder mystery with famous actors chewing the scenery.

Highest grossing movie ever to premiere in January. Which tells you quite a bit about how studios view January.

As a Minnesotan, I concur.

Knives Out cosplayers-who knew? I liked the movie but find its legs pretty surprising.

The tracking was in the $40-45 million range: if the studio had known it would do so well, I wonder if they'd have saved it for another time.  The month's other new releases are particularly "January" this year, a lot of long-gestating, troubled productions.

There is a niche being filled in the mystery, ensemble variety. It benefitted a lot from the holidays. It's a real holiday movie with the setting, mood (cozy), and the wide demographic. Even though it has a couple of Award noms, it's not pure Awards bait. It's less serious than the award movies. The movie has a bit of stakes because of the murder mystery and social aspects but it's not a standard blockbuster like Bad Boys or Jumanji. It's more accessible and mainstream than some of the awards movies too. It's very rewatachable. I liked the film and understand why it wouldn't appeal to everyone; however, I can definitely see from a box office point of view why it is succeeding.

China has closed almost all 70,000+ of its movie screens due to the coronavirus outbreak, which will have a big impact not only on local films but the Hollywood movies releases on the schedule. Blockbusters like Dolittle and Sonic the Hedgehog were scheduled for later this month, but so were other "prestige" titles:

Quote

Searchlight's Jojo Rabbit was set to be first out of the gate Feb. 12, followed by Sony's Little Women on Feb. 14 and Road House's Marriage Story on Feb. 28. Before the outbreak, sources in Beijing said that Sam Mendes' best picture contender, 1917, was close to securing a February date from Alibaba.

Green Book made $70 million in China last year, so every Oscar bait movie hopped on the bandwagon. When the theaters reopen, the Chinese movies will get top priority and some of the US films might get bumped altogether.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) gets off to a weak start, coming in under the studio's lowball hopes ($45 million) and the $50–55 million tracking. What went wrong:  it's too linked to Suicide Squad, Harley isn't popular enough to carry an entire movie, or Harley is popular but the title's not just Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey, or the R rating? The under-18 audience who did see it rated it very highly, according to CinemaScore (an A- compared to the overall B+) and RelishMix (86% positive).

I think it's a combo of Suicide Squad trauma and it being Oscar weekend. I also think word of mouth is going to give it legs. I saw a tweet earlier that described it as the Thor: Ragnarok of DC movies and the responses to that were consistently "Wow really? Now I'll definitely see it!". Just going by social media there are a lot of people who seemed to have been waiting to hear if it would be worth it and the overwhelmingly positive response from those of us who have seen it should have an influence. I think it will be fine.

For me it was the really bad marketing plus DC’s extremely inconsistent track record. I am inclined to like superhero movies but everything about the marketing convinced I would hate this movie.

I’m curious to see what the reaction is from that second wave. The initial word of mouth is extremely positive but it is coming from those who were most likely to enjoy it. I don’t pay that much attention to the initial reaction to DC movies because opinions seem to swing widely over the first two weeks.

Guess the Sonic redesign and delayed release date was a smart move by Paramount!  Maybe Cats could have been saved if Universal had listened to the trailer backlash? Probably not.

Not much for the kids until Onward, but still a little surprised by how well this did.

I’m very surprised at how good the audience reviews have been and that it got an A on Cinemascore. My niece really wants to see it and I might actually take her based on what I’m hearing about it. A week ago this was on my no way in hell list.

When it was announced that the Sonic character would be redesigned, I saw some writers react with disappointment that the studio was capitulating to "internet whiners". I mean, I know there's a lot of baggage in that area due to comic book adaptations, but sometimes, the fans actually know what they are talking about.

Not surprised about Downhill, it was pretty much the opposite of a mass appeal movie. I am surprised they didn't go with a more arthouse approach. The ski porn was awesome, though.

I only knew there was a Force Majeure remake because it screened at Sundance and some film bloggers I follow saw it there (none of them were impressed). The advertising budget must have been minimal, because I don’t think I even saw digital ads on Youtube or social media. It's releasing under Fox Searchlight, so another poorly-reviewed casualty of the big merger.

I only knew about it because of an EW article talking about Kristofer Hivju having a part in it.

Who knew CGI dogs were so expensive?

All those Dog's Purpose/Journey/Way Home movies put together probably don't cost as much. I know this is more action heavy but those are ridiculous figures for the kind of movie it is.

Yeah, I saw those numbers and initially thought that wasn't too bad all things considering, but then I saw that budget and changed my mind real quick  Even if this was made back when Harrison Ford was in his heyday, no way you can make a profit like that.  Films like that should have a way more mid-level budgeted, if you want any kind of chance to make a profit.

Of course, that could be said for a lot of movies in general.  There seems to be several that I feel actually don't have bad overall box office returns, but when you see their budgets (and that's not even including the marketing!), you wonder what they were thinking.

But, hey, I can't wait for the next adaptation in twenty or more years, and predicting which current thirty to forty year old actor, will play the crusty, old Harrison Ford-type actor in that one!  Right now, I'm going with Chris Pine, since he can rock a beard and they'll get plenty of mileage of his piercing eyes starring out into the wilderness and so forth!

To be fair, Harrison Ford's salary probably took up a decent chunk of that budget.

The budget ended up reportedly being between 125 and 150 million dollars.  Ford's salary was likely less than 10% of that.  He earned a lot of money for The Force Awakens but that was a multi-billion dollar franchise that really wanted him.

Reports have him earning around 10-12 million dollars for the next Indiana Jones movie.  If that's all he's earning for Indiana Jones, I highly doubt he's making more than that for this movie.

This should have been a nice mid-budget film and could have been that even with Ford's salary.  The reasons why it is not will be fascinating to discover.

Spielberg doesn't want Ford's last outing as Indy to be The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? If that earned $786 million workdwide 12 years ago, imagine how much a well-regarded Indiana Jones movie would make? Shia LaBeouf erasure? Who knows...

Okay, that makes sense.  I can sort of get behind that.  But only if Marion is involved.  That was the only good thing about Crystal Skull, that Marion was back.

Unsurprisingly, the box office sees massive drops and low openings in the face of a global pandemic. Some localities have already shut down theaters: will the major chains start suspending operations next? The profit margins for movie theaters are thin even in the best of times.

I have to give it up to Knives Out for having impressive legs. I waited a while to see it, and when we went on Saturday, we got the last two tickets. That's something I expect to hear about a new movie, not something that has been in wide for nine weeks.

I recently poked my head into a small theater that was showing it--a weekday at 1:00 in the afternoon--and was shocked to see probably 15 or 20 people in there.  That was seven weeks after when you saw it.

AMC is going with reduced capacity and "enhanced cleaning".

For now. This weekend was the worst attended in 40 years:

It's only going to get worse in the next few weeks. More places might order movie theaters to close altogether and IMO decisions will be made about whether trying to stay open on a national level is worth it.

Gov. Cuomo just announced that New York state, New Jersey and Connecticut have agreed to close all theaters after tonight.
