It still has RDJ fresh off the Avengers franchise and the special effects don't look cheap, at least. The reviews would hurt a kids movie a lot more with something more obscure, like an Oogieloves or Uglydolls. Universal must have known they had a turkey to release a family movie in January instead of Christmas. If they hadn't had Cats to push to Oscar glory (LOL), I wonder if Dolittle would have gotten a holiday release after all. The reviews would have still been bad, but you'd have gotten two weeks of kids out of school, and if they didn't want to see Jumanji: The Next Level again... Who ever would have guessed a year ago that Universal would make the most money this winter from a World War I movie led by up-and-coming actors? 3 Link to comment

Simon Boccanegra January 27, 2020 Share January 27, 2020 (edited) I have to give it up to Knives Out for having impressive legs. I waited a while to see it, and when we went on Saturday, we got the last two tickets. That's something I expect to hear about a new movie, not something that has been in wide for nine weeks. Apparently, a lot of people are going back to see it multiple times. They weren't shouting the dialogue along with the characters or anything, but there was that "knowing" vibe in the crowd, and I noticed when the lights came up at the end that a few were dressed in homage to one of the characters in the movie. There were Chris Evans sweaters and Jamie Lee Curtis red pantsuit approximations that I don't think were coincidence. It's all a bit mystifying to me. I didn't like the movie very much, and wondered if it really had one of the five best original screenplays. But obviously people were ready for a murder mystery with famous actors chewing the scenery. Edited January 27, 2020 by Simon Boccanegra Link to comment

The tracking was in the $40-45 million range: if the studio had known it would do so well, I wonder if they'd have saved it for another time. The month's other new releases are particularly "January" this year, a lot of long-gestating, troubled productions. 1 Link to comment

I liked the movie but find its legs pretty surprising. There is a niche being filled in the mystery, ensemble variety. It benefitted a lot from the holidays. It's a real holiday movie with the setting, mood (cozy), and the wide demographic. Even though it has a couple of Award noms, it's not pure Awards bait. It's less serious than the award movies. The movie has a bit of stakes because of the murder mystery and social aspects but it's not a standard blockbuster like Bad Boys or Jumanji. It's more accessible and mainstream than some of the awards movies too. It's very rewatachable. I liked the film and understand why it wouldn't appeal to everyone; however, I can definitely see from a box office point of view why it is succeeding. 4 Link to comment

I saw a tweet earlier that described it as the Thor: Ragnarok of DC movies and the responses to that were consistently "Wow really? Now I'll definitely see it!". Just going by social media there are a lot of people who seemed to have been waiting to hear if it would be worth it and the overwhelmingly positive response from those of us who have seen it should have an influence. For me it was the really bad marketing plus DC’s extremely inconsistent track record. I am inclined to like superhero movies but everything about the marketing convinced I would hate this movie. I don’t pay that much attention to the initial reaction to DC movies because opinions seem to swing widely over the first two weeks. Edited February 16, 2020 by Guest Link to comment

The advertising budget must have been minimal, because I don’t think I even saw digital ads on Youtube or social media. It's releasing under Fox Searchlight, so another poorly-reviewed casualty of the big merger. 1 Link to comment

thuganomics85 February 24, 2020 Share February 24, 2020 Yeah, I saw those numbers and initially thought that wasn't too bad all things considering, but then I saw that budget and changed my mind real quick Even if this was made back when Harrison Ford was in his heyday, no way you can make a profit like that. Films like that should have a way more mid-level budgeted, if you want any kind of chance to make a profit. Of course, that could be said for a lot of movies in general. There seems to be several that I feel actually don't have bad overall box office returns, but when you see their budgets (and that's not even including the marketing!), you wonder what they were thinking. But, hey, I can't wait for the next adaptation in twenty or more years, and predicting which current thirty to forty year old actor, will play the crusty, old Harrison Ford-type actor in that one! Right now, I'm going with Chris Pine, since he can rock a beard and they'll get plenty of mileage of his piercing eyes starring out into the wilderness and so forth! 3 Link to comment

The budget ended up reportedly being between 125 and 150 million dollars. Ford's salary was likely less than 10% of that. He earned a lot of money for The Force Awakens but that was a multi-billion dollar franchise that really wanted him. Reports have him earning around 10-12 million dollars for the next Indiana Jones movie. If that's all he's earning for Indiana Jones, I highly doubt he's making more than that for this movie. This should have been a nice mid-budget film and could have been that even with Ford's salary. The reasons why it is not will be fascinating to discover. 2 Link to comment

That was the only good thing about Crystal Skull, that Marion was back. 5 Link to comment

I waited a while to see it, and when we went on Saturday, we got the last two tickets. That's something I expect to hear about a new movie, not something that has been in wide for nine weeks. I recently poked my head into a small theater that was showing it--a weekday at 1:00 in the afternoon--and was shocked to see probably 15 or 20 people in there. That was seven weeks after when you saw it. 1 Link to comment

This weekend was the worst attended in 40 years: It's only going to get worse in the next few weeks. More places might order movie theaters to close altogether and IMO decisions will be made about whether trying to stay open on a national level is worth it. StatisticalOutlier March 17, 2020 Share March 17, 2020 Closing the theaters is annoying me. I go to weekday matinees, and I always practice social distancing even when there's not a pandemic...now that I know there's a term for sitting as far away from everybody else as possible. 1 Link to comment
