Impressive. But China managed to double that number. Quote The bulk of overseas comes from China which was the linchpin this weekend — when F7 opened in 2015, it did so without the Middle Kingdom in the first suite. The gross there is a staggering $192.1M. That’s the biggest 3-day start of all time and the No. 1 debut for a Hollywood film. It is the 2nd best opening weekend ever behind only 2016’s local title, The Mermaid, which had the benefit of four days of previews over the New Year period last year. 1 Link to comment

The Promise features a love triangle, as does The Ottoman Lieutenant, a 2017 release set in Turkey during the early days of WWI. This NY Times article delves into the filming of both along with the controversy surrounding them. Kerkorian apparently pledged $100M for the making of The Promise before his death in 2015. The movie was filmed in Malta, Portugal and Spain with heavy security. I don't know if all that really had to cost $100M, though, or since it was there to spend, hey, presidential suites and personal assistants for everybody! 2 Link to comment
Bruinsfan April 27, 2017 Share April 27, 2017 If it sticks around another week or so I may see it just on general principle of Oscar Isaac being one of the stars. Either The Fate of the Furious is going to completely overturn movie wisdom about being a late entry in a franchise, or everyone who wanted to see it did so in the first week they were able to. Hard to be a hit with 17% on Rotten Tomatoes AND a terrible Cinemascore: Quote Currently, the pic is looking to open below its low teen estimates with $9.3M in fourth over three-days and gets –gulp- a D+ CinemaScore. Now when was the last time that happened? Relativity’s The Disappointments Room landed a D back in September. Here’s some good news: Moviegoers enjoyed The Circle better than Paramount’s The Devil’s Inside which received an ‘F’ five years ago. Keep in mind that The Devil Inside is a horror movie that told people to go to a website to see how the story ended (stunningly, this did not lead to good word of mouth!). Speaking of endings: Quote The marketing connected with The Circle’s release went in another direction, with many rivals griping about its convoluted trailers. Originally, test scores for The Circle were low. A reshoot was ordered four months ago and the ending changed, putting a positive light on Watson’s protagonist in the end. Test scores fell even further. Edited May 1, 2017 by Dejana Link to comment

Bruinsfan May 25, 2017 Share May 25, 2017 The word of mouth I've heard from people who've seen it has been BAD. Like, even worse than my expectations based on the hot mess I thought Prometheus was. I can't figure out if Michael Fassbender just says yes to everything he's offered like Michael Caine, or if he legitimately can't tell the difference between a good movie and a bad one. 2 Link to comment

AimingforYoko May 28, 2017 Share May 28, 2017 70% drop for Covenant. Makes sense, since it's basically a horror movie. Looks like Pirates is going to perform like Fate of the Furious, OK domestically, gangbusters overseas. Disney will take it, I'm sure. 2 Link to comment

JustaPerson June 5, 2017 Share June 5, 2017 (edited) Marvel is making a female superhero movie, Captain Marvel, with Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. But it's not set to come out until 2019. So I guess this time, the DCEU will lay out the groundwork for the MCU for a change. Edited June 5, 2017 by JustaPerson 2 Link to comment

I was torn about Wonder Woman. On one hand, this ^^^^; on the other hand, if it bombed, maybe they'd make fewer damned super hero/comic book movies. Although I realize that had it bombed, studios would've blamed it on being a female super hero. 1 Link to comment
memememe76 June 6, 2017 Share June 6, 2017 With Wonder Woman, it showed that a female led superhero movie can make money. With LA La Land, it showed that the romantic comedy and musical can make money. Even if Bridget Jones didn't do so great in the US, it did great everywhere else. With Hidden Figures, it showed that a female driven historical pic can make money. With Rogue One and The Hunger Games, it showed a female led action flick can make money. What genres are missing? 6 Link to comment

Bruinsfan June 7, 2017 Share June 7, 2017 (edited) I guess horror movies have been more egalitarian. Many of the best of those have had female leads (Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, Alien, Silence of the Lambs, Halloween, The Ring. More recently It Follows and The VVitch.) thuganomics85 June 11, 2017 Share June 11, 2017 Damn, only about a 45% decrease for Wonder Woman? For a comic book film, that is damn impressive. Nice! I see The Mummy is just going to be another film that will underperform domestically, but shine overseas. Other countries really love Tom Cruise, huh? But I wonder how the other "Dark Universe" films will fare without his star power (overseas.) 3 Link to comment
