I'm a big fan of Luc Besson. But there is no way he should have gotten the greenlight for a movie with a budget of  over $200 million.

It was way too much money, and the casting was terrible. Cara and Dane can not carry a movie, let alone an action based one. And making them lovers while they look like siblings. Poor, poor casting.

Love or hate Christopher Nolan it's hard not to be impressed with his ability to put butts in the seats. His movies pretty much always have really strong legs too, so combine that with Dunkirk's great reception and the fact that there doesn't seem to be too much competition in the coming weeks and I'll be interested to see how high it can climb. Either way, it's probably safe to assume he'll continue to have carte blanche with the studios.

Nice to see Girl's Trip open so well too -- I feel like it's been awhile since we've seen a studio comedy really break out? And like with Baby Driver and The Big Sick, it's always good to see smaller-scale films holding their own in the midst of blockbuster season.

I feel that way Chloe Grace-Moretz. Although she CAN act; but she's been hyped as the next Jodie Foster/Natalie Portman (child star who grows up into an Oscar contender) and I don't think she's all that. Chloe does seem to be taking a lower-profile right now. Her best bet would be to focus on appearing in ensembles and possibly getting herself into the Marvel machine, which would allow her steady work and enough income to be choosier about her projects instead of taking crap like The 5th Wave. I do like that she's refused to whittle herself down to a size 0 which is refreshing to see.

I'm kind of impressed that Dunkirk did that well. It's not the type of America Fuck Yeah war movies that do well.

Whew, a little close there, but I'm certainly glad Dunkirk stopped Emoji Movie from claiming the top stop.  Still made way more money then it probably should have.

Honestly, I'm not surprised Atomic Blonde was bit soft.  I enjoyed it, but it had a few things going against it, and I can see why it won't appeal to everyone.  Won't be too surprised if it has a big second week drop either, but at least it's budget isn't too high.

IDK, the internal multiplier for the weekend isn't great for an animated kids' film, though as always it depends on how it holds in coming weeks along with how much money it can make overseas and its home movie/merchandising afterlife. I wonder if it's the sort of story that only works for people once and would flop badly as a sequel.

Atomic Blonde opened on the lower end of expectations but I feel like its buzz kind of peaked too far out from its release date. It screened months ago at SXSW but wasn't the kind of awards movie that uses reviews and Oscar predictions to build up the excitement all over again. $18.5M is still above the first John Wick. I hear the movie isn't entirely like the advertising has made it out to be, so the word-of-mouth might be mixed.

Coming off a $3.5M weekend and with August still to go, WB shouldn't really have to extend themselves too much. Good for WW to get there naturally, but the artificial pushes to a milestone are more fun to watch from a box office perspective.

I think Baby Driver is close enough to make it, even with inevitable upcoming theater losses, at worst it will need a Labor Day weekend re-expansion to get there. On the all-time domestic list there are literally two movies that finished their runs in the $99M range and they were both Buena Vista/Disney animated properties. It's just four movies at $98M and five at $97M. Meanwhile, you have 24 above $100M yet below $101M, and 18 at $101M.

This weekend is the lowest first weekend of August since 1998. Early August has produced strong opening weekends in recent years so I think with 2017 it's probably just one of those quirks of scheduling. At different points both Alien: Covenant and Pitch Perfect 3 were scheduled for this weekend and Baby Driver was supposed to come out August 11. Something like Valerian could have benefited from the August date and things debuting later this year, like It or the Kingsman sequel.

Really? I'd heard that when the artists (or their estates) learned about how their songs would be used, and in what scenes, they were on board with it.

Yeah, that just seems incredibly idiotic, especially when they knew that the soundtrack was a major part of the movie. Did they think that because Marc Bolan is dead that nobody owns the rights to that song? The hell? I think whoever did the clearances is probably in a shit load of trouble with Sony. Their career is finished, in any event.

Sony just needs to settle this as quickly as possible.

Apparently, it's the lowest grossing weekend of 2017 so far and the next two weekends look to fare even worse. Labor Day weekend is almost always dire. On the bright side (for WB, at least), the Conjuring Universe has reached the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, at much less expense than most other cinematic/extended universes.

Scott Mendelson (of Forbes) thinks it "should terrify Hollywood":

USA Today's headline pretty much sums it up:

Box Office Disaster: Lackluster Releases, Mayweather-McGregor, Hurricane Harvey Create Slowest Weekend in Over 15 Years

Tulip Fever, which wasn't even in 1,000 theaters, and it only landed on this weekend in the middle of August after Harvey Weinstein finally stopped playing musical chairs with its release date.  Labor Day weekend has never been one of the strongest times at the box office, but studios really neglected August this year. Annabelle: Creation may creep over the $100M and will be the only August movie to do it this year. Past Augusts this decade launched much bigger hits and sometimes more than one in the month:

 

2016:  Suicide Squad ($325M)

2015:  Straight Outta Compton ($161M)

2014:  Guardians of the Galaxy ($333M), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ($191M)

DeHaan also originally did one of the voices in Leap! but got replaced for the US release. At least he doesn't have any more movies out this year. Taylor Kitsch's 2012 triple play of John Carter, Battleship and Savages isn't looking so bad in retrospect!

I honestly feel like everybody is rooting for Dane DeHaan because he reminds them of a Young Leo, but it's not happening.

On one hand, Ryan Reynolds has a movie that's been number 1 for 3 weeks. On the other hand, it's been during the driest box office returns in 17 years. But hey, I'm sure he'll take it. The movie's going to hit the mid-60's or even more, which is great on a 30 million budget. And it's for an original movie. Not my favorite of the summer (That'd be Wonder Woman and Baby Driver) but deserves the modest success it's gotten.

Dane DeHaan always reminds me of Bill Skarsgård (who's playing Pennyswise in IT), every time I see a movie with him in, I have to sort of remind myself.

AFAIK, his parents/family weren't in show business. He's worked his way up from TV roles to movies. I online know some stans of his who rave about The Place Beyond the Pines, Kill Your Darlings and Chronicle (a sci-fi thriller that did open at #1 in 2012—as much as I've ragged on his failures, I can point out a success).

In terms of screen presence, he probaly is closer to a Paul Dano type than DiCaprio, which may explain the recent box office results...
