As a straight white man, I've been catered to my whole life. It's nice. But I'm fine if not everything is aimed at me. While I haven't seen Us, Black Panther and Captain Marvel are fun movies. Dumbo is just shy of 2 hours, and Beauty and the Beast was OVER 2 hours. It was ridiculous. I know you're relying on nostalgic adults taking their kids, but if the kids are falling asleep because the movie is too long, they're not going to want to come back. 2 Link to comment

Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King are still part of pop culture with the cartoon sequels and stage plays. Dumbo was popular with people who are grandparents or even great-grandparents whereas The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty And The Beast are more likely to have a nostalgic hold on people who have kids at the right age to take to the theater to see this. I think dumbo still has pop culture relevance. He’s a big part of Disney iconography- not as big as Tinkerbell mind you but big. I think the problem is that you took a very simple simple story and DRAGGED it out with beautiful CGI. My mom saw it on her bday (matinee so the kids would be in school) and she gave it a 7. I was just at Disneyland last week and we went to see the preview and I was fucking enraged just from that. HOW DARE YOU CALL THAT SWEET BABY UGLY! He's hiding in a haystack while his fretful mother refuses to be herded away from him and then I have to watch a humans talk about how ugly he is and how he has to be "fixed" in order to be worth anything to their circus?! Didn't make me want to watch the actual movie. But, to be fair, the second I heard 'Tim Burton' and 'Dumbo' in the same sentence I thought 'Well, this is going to be an exercise in cruelty to outcasts. Again.' Pocahontas is pretty much the only thing aside from Song of the South that I can't see ever getting touched. (There was a dramatic live version in 2005 but it wasn't Disney.) Lindsay Ellis did a really good essay on why Disney's Pocahontas was met with "meh" at the box office and why Moana is basically Pocohantas but with a bit more enlightenment on native cultures: 2 Link to comment

Perhaps not, if it opened opposite a superhero movie. I know this movie is loosely based on a true story, but it seems like a movie I've seen before but done better. Get Out wasn't released as an Oscar movie but became one as the year went on. It seemed to grow on critics as the months went by (comparing the initial reviews to its placement on year-end lists), but I don't think it would have had the same Oscars success without such strong box office. Traditional awards bait doesn't need to make $100-200 million to get nominations and wins, but movies in less Oscar friendly genres have to do more to get considered. Unfair, but often the way it is. ITA that The Best of Enemies fits the profile of classic busted Oscar bait given its subject matter/reviews/release date. Taraji and Sam Rockwell were announced to star back in June 2015 and it started filming in May 2017.
