I haven't seen a trailer for the movie, but the plot sounds more like a romantic drama. What was the $100 million for?

The Promise features a love triangle, as does The Ottoman Lieutenant, a 2017 release set in Turkey during the early days of WWI. This NY Times article delves into the filming of both along with the controversy surrounding them.  Kerkorian apparently pledged $100M for the making of The Promise before his death in 2015. The movie was filmed in Malta, Portugal and Spain with heavy security. I don't know if all that really had to cost $100M, though, or since it was there to spend, hey, presidential suites and personal assistants for everybody!

If it sticks around another week or so I may see it just on general principle of Oscar Isaac being one of the stars.

Either The Fate of the Furious is going to completely overturn movie wisdom about being a late entry in a franchise, or everyone who wanted to see it did so in the first week they were able to.

The early trailers for King Arthur looked like trash.  Ooh, leather clad young Charlie Hunnam growing up on the mean, gritty streets of urban London.  It looked like it was set in modern day times.  With gigantic elephants.  Of course it failed.

I like King Arthur movies. I didn't even mind the 2004 one too much. Guy Ritchie is alright and I like Hunman so I will probably see it on streaming.

But who made the stupid decision to give this movie a budget of $175 million expecting it to make at least half a billion? I feel like they didn't learn from other movies. That there isn't a demand for King Arthur movies especially in the international box office.

You can't expect a studio to spare any expense when hoping to kick off a cinematic universe. At one point, WB had plans for SIX movies set in Camelot!

How to Be A Latin Lover is about to hit the 30 million mark, meaning it's making 3x its production budget. Good for them. I really liked it.

I think it's funny that Everything, Everything made 12 million with little promotion as opposed to Paper Towns, which made about the same but it was promoted like crazy.

The word of mouth I've heard from people who've seen it has been BAD. Like, even worse than my expectations based on the hot mess I thought Prometheus was.

I can't figure out if Michael Fassbender just says yes to everything he's offered like Michael Caine, or if he legitimately can't tell the difference between a good movie and a bad one.

Looks like Pirates is going to perform like Fate of the Furious, OK domestically, gangbusters overseas. Disney will take it, I'm sure.

Also, I'm glad that Johnny Depp's movie is doing so well.

Marvel is making a female superhero movie, Captain Marvel, with Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. But it's not set to come out until 2019. So I guess this time, the DCEU will lay out the groundwork for the MCU for a change.

I was torn about Wonder Woman.  On one hand, this ^^^^; on the other hand, if it bombed, maybe they'd make fewer damned super hero/comic book movies.  Although I realize that had it bombed, studios would've blamed it on being a female super hero.

With Wonder Woman, it showed that a female led superhero movie can make money.

With LA La Land, it showed that the romantic comedy and musical can make money. Even if Bridget Jones didn't do so great in the US, it did great everywhere else. 

With Hidden Figures, it showed that a female driven historical pic can make money.

With Rogue One and The Hunger Games, it showed a female led action flick can make money.

I guess horror movies have been more egalitarian. Many of the best of those have had female leads (Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, Alien, Silence of the Lambs, Halloween, The Ring. More recently It Follows and The VVitch.)

I see The Mummy is just going to be another film that will underperform domestically, but shine overseas.  Other countries really love Tom Cruise, huh?  But I wonder how the other "Dark Universe" films will fare without his star power (overseas.)

I haven't really been following "Dark Universe" news, but I had assumed that they'd get Tom to be in all of them somehow. No?

With the final figures the weekend total for Wonder Woman was $58,520,672, making the drop even better at 43.4 percent!
