One hundred million. Impressive.

But China managed to double that number.

Quote

The bulk of overseas comes from China which was the linchpin this weekend — when F7 opened in 2015, it did so without the Middle Kingdom in the first suite. The gross there is a staggering $192.1M. That’s the biggest 3-day start of all time and the No. 1 debut for a Hollywood film. It is the 2nd best opening weekend ever behind only 2016’s local title, The Mermaid, which had the benefit of four days of previews over the New Year period last year.

I was fascinated how The Promise got a $100m budget and wide release. Turns out the whole thing was fronted by noted financier Kirk Kerkorian (who is of Armenian descent).

I haven't seen a trailer for the movie, but the plot sounds more like a romantic drama. What was the $100 million for?

The movie is about the Armenian genocide in Turkey (Ottoman Empire) during the early 20th century.

So drama, yes. Romance...not so much. Thanks.

Was there a lot of on-location shooting? Still trying to sort out the $100 million budget.

The Promise features a love triangle, as does The Ottoman Lieutenant, a 2017 release set in Turkey during the early days of WWI. This NY Times article delves into the filming of both along with the controversy surrounding them.  Kerkorian apparently pledged $100M for the making of The Promise before his death in 2015. The movie was filmed in Malta, Portugal and Spain with heavy security. I don't know if all that really had to cost $100M, though, or since it was there to spend, hey, presidential suites and personal assistants for everybody!

If it sticks around another week or so I may see it just on general principle of Oscar Isaac being one of the stars.

Either The Fate of the Furious is going to completely overturn movie wisdom about being a late entry in a franchise, or everyone who wanted to see it did so in the first week they were able to.

(via Deadline, but the rest of the article spoils the ending of the first one)

The Circle got beat by How To Be A Latin Lover? Oof.

Oh well, on to Summer.

Hard to be a hit with 17% on Rotten Tomatoes AND a terrible Cinemascore:

Quote

Currently, the pic is looking to open below its low teen estimates with $9.3M in fourth over three-days and gets –gulp- a D+ CinemaScore. Now when was the last time that happened? Relativity’s The Disappointments Room landed a D back in September. Here’s some good news: Moviegoers enjoyed The Circle better than Paramount’s The Devil’s Inside which received an ‘F’ five years ago.

Keep in mind that The Devil Inside is a horror movie that told people to go to a website to see how the story ended (stunningly, this did not lead to good word of mouth!). Speaking of endings:

Quote

The marketing connected with The Circle’s release went in another direction, with many rivals griping about its convoluted trailers. Originally, test scores for The Circle were low. A reshoot was ordered four months ago and the ending changed, putting a positive light on Watson’s protagonist in the end. Test scores fell even further.

Too bad, I really want Snatched to bomb so that I never have to see a commercial for an Amy Schumer movie on my tv ever again.

The early trailers for King Arthur looked like trash.  Ooh, leather clad young Charlie Hunnam growing up on the mean, gritty streets of urban London.  It looked like it was set in modern day times.  With gigantic elephants.  Of course it failed.

I like King Arthur movies. I didn't even mind the 2004 one too much. Guy Ritchie is alright and I like Hunman so I will probably see it on streaming.

But who made the stupid decision to give this movie a budget of $175 million expecting it to make at least half a billion? I feel like they didn't learn from other movies. That there isn't a demand for King Arthur movies especially in the international box office.

You can't expect a studio to spare any expense when hoping to kick off a cinematic universe. At one point, WB had plans for SIX movies set in Camelot!

Lots of movies finishing above estimates, with the top two each gaining more than $2M from the early figures.

How to Be A Latin Lover is about to hit the 30 million mark, meaning it's making 3x its production budget. Good for them. I really liked it.

I think it's funny that Everything, Everything made 12 million with little promotion as opposed to Paper Towns, which made about the same but it was promoted like crazy.

The word of mouth I've heard from people who've seen it has been BAD. Like, even worse than my expectations based on the hot mess I thought Prometheus was.

I can't figure out if Michael Fassbender just says yes to everything he's offered like Michael Caine, or if he legitimately can't tell the difference between a good movie and a bad one.

Not a great start to Memorial Day weekend at the box office, but now that you get $150+ million opening weekends in March, I guess there's not the same cachet to kicking off the summer box office season.

I won't be surprised if they eventually start stacking blockbusters into February.

Michael Fassbender should be a superstar but for some reason can't quite get it.

I wouldn't mind that one bit. What else is there in February  to do besides Valentines Day? And if you're single it's just a kick in the teeth.

Guess Fox News can take their complaint about Wonder Woman being unpatriotic and shove it up their ass.

Hopefully the movie will keep top spot for now, and give that stupid Tom Cruise Mummy reboot a beating.

Marvel is making a female superhero movie, Captain Marvel, with Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. But it's not set to come out until 2019. So I guess this time, the DCEU will lay out the groundwork for the MCU for a change.

Wonder Woman proves that a stand-alone movie about a female superhero can win at the box office.

Your move, Marvel.

I was torn about Wonder Woman.  On one hand, this ^^^^; on the other hand, if it bombed, maybe they'd make fewer damned super hero/comic book movies.  Although I realize that had it bombed, studios would've blamed it on being a female super hero.

With Wonder Woman, it showed that a female led superhero movie can make money.

With LA La Land, it showed that the romantic comedy and musical can make money. Even if Bridget Jones didn't do so great in the US, it did great everywhere else.

With Hidden Figures, it showed that a female driven historical pic can make money.

With Rogue One and The Hunger Games, it showed a female led action flick can make money.

What genres are missing?

You forgot that it showed that a black female driven historical pic can make money.

I guess horror movies have been more egalitarian. Many of the best of those have had female leads (Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, Alien, Silence of the Lambs, Halloween, The Ring. More recently It Follows and The VVitch.)

Damn, only about a 45% decrease for Wonder Woman?  For a comic book film, that is damn impressive.  Nice!

I see The Mummy is just going to be another film that will underperform domestically, but shine overseas.  Other countries really love Tom Cruise, huh?  But I wonder how the other "Dark Universe" films will fare without his star power (overseas.)

I wonder if Russell Crowe's Dr. Jekyll in the failing The Mummy will have an impact on his own upcoming Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde.

Much better than the 69% drop for BvS. This is how a good superhero movie performs, it has legs. (♪and knows how to use them...♪)

I haven't really been following "Dark Universe" news, but I had assumed that they'd get Tom to be in all of them somehow. No?

I haven't either but I'd imagined a more Marvel-esque series of stand-alones within universe?

With the final figures the weekend total for Wonder Woman was $58,520,672, making the drop even better at 43.4 percent!
