S01.E13: One Last Lie

Unable to provide Donnie and Linklater to the FBI, Harlee makes a deal with Stahl to exchange her own immunity for that of her crew. Harlee comes face to face with Miguel who reveals his darkest side as he demands to be a part of Cristina's life.

Wow.

Wow wow wow wow... I loved that finale.  There were so many twists and surprises, yet still managed to stay pretty believable.  There was so many good scenes in this episode that I don't even know where to start.  For me, if I had to choose, highlights were Harlee's talk with Christina at the airport and Harlee's phone confession to Woz.  Both scenes were so moving and so well-acted that I'm grateful that this show was picked up for another season.  The last scene with Harlee and Miguel and the scene were Harlee confronted Miguel's enabler/mother were also moving and well-performed.

Stahl is scum.  I can't believe how he screwed his partner this episode, literally and figuratively.  I just hope he gets what's coming to him next season.

Casper!!! I wondered if he'd show up!

Who?!!?!

Sorry Saperstein. If only you had waited an inordinate amount of time, secretly implicated all of your friends and co-conspirators, and been born with a vagina, you might have been forgiven by Woz.

I'm actually secretly enthused that Harlee's long range plan was to protect her entire crew including Woz. For a while I was bothered by what seemed to be Harlee's recriminations of Woz. Really she is no better than any of them, so I'm glad that she gets that too.

Cristina is still an asshole, but so is Stahl. If I felt like he could wait 2 years, I would ship the two of them so that I could fast forward the living daylights out of them. At first, I was wondering if Cristina narc'ed on Harlee. Then I wondered if Miguel was just playing Harlee. Ultimately, I've landed on Cristina telling Miguel because Cristina is ridiculously naive, but unbelievably self righteous.

Stahl is a cockroach who cannot help, but protect himself. Sorry Chen. You should have also been running surveillance on your partner so you wouldn't be surprised when he fucked you and then fucked you.

But,Woz told Harlee as the FBI was pulling up something like, "you better tell me what you know real quick..." and it looked like he was listening.

Oh, and Harley looking into the camera after she snapped Miguel's neck. Yikes!

Was this a season or series finale, or do we know. Did not like how the some of the story lines did not really go anywhere or make sense. I honestly could take this show or leave it even though I think Ray Liotta was great.

This has been a can't miss show for me all year, and the last two episodes have been epic. I agree with another poster...JLo looking straight into the camera at the end after she had just snapped Miguel's neck was chilling. That look said Harlee is not above doing anything to protect her daughter, herself, and her job/crew. Great show. Stahl is a creep, but I think the actor is hot, and the physical explosion that's going to happen when he and Harlee do the dirty (and I'm sure they will) is going to be a sight to watch. I can't imagine how Woz is going to protect his crew next season and keep the feds off their back, but I'm sure they will find a way. After all, do they ever really work, LOL? All they do is put out fires all day long for the dirty sh*t they got into in the first place.

Wow what an ending, and the look Harlee gave us wow :>

And there is something or some way that Harlee told Woz before he was picked up, we will find out next season...

Who is Casper?  Well, other than JLo's RL boyfriend.

Remember when Woz and Harlee were walking and talking in a graveyard?

Best line of the entire series:  Harlee to Woz - "Would I lie to you?"

That's a distant second to my favorite line, Woz to dead Donnie, wrapped in a rug, ready to insert into the crematory: "Where's the MONEY, Donnie?"

I didn't know that was Casper, so thanks for that Easter egg. Cool he got a part. Even though it was small, it was good.

Yeah, Harlee gave Woz an out over the phone, we just didn't get to hear it and will have to wait until next season to see what that was, and how Woz gets clean. So to speak.

Chen coming on to Stahl? WTH? Girlfriend, that was all kinds of bad judgement. I mean, he's not THAT hot, is he? Or did she think Stahl would then save her from getting in trouble for the kidnapped guy being killed? I really don't know how Donnie got into that room to kill the guy, or why Donnie wanted to kill the guy. Not that it matters.

Lohman was all kinds of awesome in this episode. Donnie comes at him with a knife, then cut to commercial while I'm yelling HEY! from my couch? The nerve of that show! Heh. The Lohman/Donnie fight was excellent, Donnie thought he could get the drop on Lohman, who turned out to not be such a pansy pushover after all.

Harlee giving Miguel $200,000 was all kinds of stupid. Of COURSE he's not going to leave, unless it's with Cristina AND the money AND Harlee AND everything else he wants. Now Miguel's mom gets the cash. That's all kinds of wrong, too.

Gramma didn't know Cristina existed? Wow. Really.

GREAT episode. Woz was incredible meeting Stahl in that diner. Great scene that Liotta ate to pieces. This show is No. 1 on my fav list right now. Great writing, great acting, great everything.

Although Harlee snapping Miguel's neck like that is a little freaky since my chiro does that to me for adjustments, and I crack my own neck like that. I haven't died yet ...

I hope Harlee knows where the key is to that crematorium since it appears Woz might be busy for a spell.

Does Harlee have the money?  My power cut out.  ARRRG!  I will catch this again but I have to know now!  She gave some to Miguel so that speaks to that, yes?

Key to crematorium?

Yes Harlee had the money, then she told Woz, Woz got the money and he turned himself in

Harlee got 200k for Miguel, Woz left some for Harlee for Christina's education

Oh the guy's name (with the kid) was Casper, I didn't catch it yesterday :/

Im still in awe..12 millions dollars? I've never seen 12 million dollars but I would think it would be more. How does a cop or anyone else deposit 12 million in a bank account? and just walk away?

I'm not a cop, if I have 12M cash, I won't deposit it in the bank, I will buy a house, quick closing for 6M cash, then buy a yacht for $2M,

buy an RV and an SUV, then hide the rest in my house and spend it slowly :))

I believe the actor was JLo's boyfriend IRL, Casper Smart. At least that's what some posters here have said. I didn't pay a lot of attention, but thinking back, the guy sure did look like Casper. I didn't see credits, but Casper Smart should be in them.

Woz had the majority of the 12 million - it was piled all around him still wrapped up when the FBI pulled up to arrest him.

Harlee took out $200,000 for Miguel and Woz left a duffel full of cash - probably $1 million or so - for Harlee in that warehouse place.

So, Woz was probably lounging on around 10-11 million dollars when he got got.

I, too, am dying to know what little nugget of info Harlee told Woz as the cops were closing in.

And the look!  Oh man, that look from Harlee.

Finally, I think the writers did a nice job of plotting out all of Harlee's moves/plans to try and satisfy all her masters and her attempts to keep her crew out of danger.  Nothing was too over the top ridiculous and it worked.

I, for one, can't wait for season two.

PS - JLo has looked so smoking hot - even in some of those ill-fitting pantsuits.  I want her hair style so bad.  Alas, I'm cursed with the straightest of hair.  I wonder if salons still do perms?

Harlee snapping Miguel's neck at the end and then looking at the camera was all kinds of epic. Especially because Show seemed to be implying that Miguel had much more interest in Cristina than a father should have in his daughter...so glad we don't have to see that play out next season. Buh-bye!

I'm trying to think what Harlee could have on Stahl/the FBI that could get Woz and everyone out of jeopardy...maybe Stahl hiring the escort and insisting on calling her Harlee? As this whole thing was his operation, that might damage his credibility enough to void any other charges. Or maybe she has something on Baker from when they used to work together.

Stahl is such an asshole. Molly was dumb to sleep with him but that was so beyond. I'm guessing she won't be back next season, which sucks, cuz I liked the actress. But Stahl can kick rocks. I don't look forward to his and Harlee's eventual grody hook-up.

God bless Jennifer Lopez, because she had to carry this thing in spite of all of the plot contrivances and conveniences, which got really absurd towards the end.  And she did.  I have never felt sorry for Harlee beyond the Miguel abuse, but the final scene between her and Cristina was really well done.

As for what she told Woz, unless it's something that will be retconned next season, I assumed she told Woz about having Stahl on video lying about granting the crew immunity.  That might shake up the case.

I had no problem with Cristina - of all the lies that Harlee told, lying to Cristina about Miguel made the least sense.  Cristina was right - she was treating her like a child rather than a teenager. I didn't agree with Cristina's actions, but having observed young family members put the most amount of faith in the shitty absent parent, they rang true to me.  And most importantly, all of that could have been avoided if Harlee had been straight up with her.

I didn't really understand the point of Harlee going to see Fava again, only to dismiss him because he wasn't down with her illegal bullshit.  Just like she "warned" him about being a bad person, she knew he was on the up and up.  She wasn't too "street" to have some sexy times and take advantage of someone who genuinely cared about her and Cristina. Whatever, I got my Pesi fix.

I'm not sure I buy Woz's zen acceptance of everything at the end. Like, where was this guy earlier in the season when he was killing Saperstein and subjecting Harlee to a lie detector, etc.?

I did not buy Chen coming on to Stahl. She could do way better than her sleazy co-worker. And ... predictably enough, he later threw her under the bus and killed her career. Asshole!

Was the whole season supposed to be less than a month? Loman is sure having a confusing, shitty first few weeks on the job.

The ending with Miguel was eye-roll inducing. Of course, after all the domination subtext between Harlee and Stahl all season, the show had to go and get all full on rape-y at the end. Yuck.

I believe the show's timeline was 10-11 days, so not even two weeks.  Woz went from almost murdering Harlee and actually murdering Saperstein to giving himself up and claiming he would have done the same if Harlee had come to him from the beginning.  Never mind that a few days ago (in the show's timeline), he murdered the team member who had done just that.

I'm not sure why the timeline couldn't have been expanded. It would have been easier for me to suspend disbelief.

Link to comment

I don't have any problem with any timeline, real or imagined. On other shows, people drive from DC to middle America in less than two minutes, solve a major murder in less than 20. This show going on over a period of viewer weeks while X weeks/days IRL, or in TV-show real life ... not a problem. At least I didn't have to talk about a time-space continuum here like i do with so many other tv shows.

I did not buy Chen coming on to Stahl. She could do way better than her sleazy co-worker.

It was way out-of-character, although she knew she was on the carpet for letting the kidnapped guy get murdered on her watch, so why not TRY to work Stahl to get him to alibi her so she could keep her job. It was a gamble (abeit a sleazy one!) that didn't pay off.

Maybe she can now join Woz's crew!

I don't see Harlee having Stahl on video makes any difference to getting Woz off, although it could show him in a bad light. I really don't know why she planted a camera in his apartment. I'm looking forward to next season, I love this show.

I also liked Tessa actually showing pain and the results of being shot, unlike every other show where someone gets shot five times and jumps up to join the fight and is back at work the next day, without so much as a limp or gimp. This was one of the most realistic, if not THE most realistic cop show on tv IMO.

I was disappointed they didn't show her at work the next day, having to tough it out and pretend she hadn't been shot.   Didn't Woz say the whole crew would need to be at the station, acting normal, because Loman hadn't spilled to the FBI and they still needed to feign innocence?   I don't like Tess, but this would have been a good opportunity for me to appreciate her a little bit.  Oh well!   Except for the scene where she found the gift dead Saperstein left for her, Tess has been a huge waste of this actress.

I didn't realize Chen was screwing Stahl to keep her job, although that does make more sense.   But why is she to blame for kidnapped guy getting murdered?   This was Stahl's operation, he was her boss, and he chose to leave kidnapped guy in danger as bait, rather than coming up with a reason to try and rescue him, or even having Harlee convince Woz they should keep kidnapped guy on Woz's boat or something, where he might have been safer.   Chen didn't get to him fast enough, but it was Stahl's decision to leave the poor guy abducted by sadistic freaks who could have murdered him at any moment, anyway.

Exactly. If I remember correctly, Chen was explicitly worried about his safety and wanted a better line of sight when they were sitting on the warehouse, but since Stahl was her superior, she had to follow his orders or else she probably would have been on the carpet anyway for insubordination. He screwed her over and seemed to take great pleasure in doing so.

Link to comment

Regarding Chen, there was a moment earlier in the season when she arrives at Stahl's apartment and he opens the door in a towel.  Her reaction to him at the time hinted to me there was some attraction on her end, and I perceived her approach later was a result of adrenaline/heightened emotions, not because she was trying to keep her job.  But, hey, maybe I missed something.

Baker told Stahl that someone would be taking the fall for the murdered kidnapped victim, and that it wouldn't be her.  Stahl pinning in on Chen, especially when she already demonstrated insubordination by persuading the DA to free Miguel, seems relatively simple.  It's not fair at all to Chen, but Stahl likely wouldn't take the fall for it, especially once Woz approached him to make a deal and get the money.

Glad she snapped Miguel's neck, rapist. He was in the process of trying to rape her.  And that look into the camera was everything. Seemed like a really good first season to me.

Anyway, he creeped me out when he touched Cristina's face in the car and said she reminded him of her mother, ill.

He HATES her mother, I was like what the hell does that mean?  It was just a creepy scene for me.

Relieved he's gone, he brought it on himself, that was a clear case of self defense IMO.

And during the almost-rape scene, didn't he say something about taking it out on not just Harlee but her "little girl"?  I was like what in the actual fuck does that mean?!   Although I could have heard wrong -- I was cringing so much at that horrible scene that I wasn't listening to the dialogue that closely.

Yeah, Harlee was in all kinds of right for killing Miguel in self defense, although now there are no witnesses and she's got a dead body in her house to get rid of, and no jury would let her off. Which is why I'm hoping she knows about the crematorium, and Cady can come over to help her carry Dead Miguel.

Now someone needs to break into Miguel's mom's house to grab that $200,000 back.

Is that Harlee's sister who lives in Jersey, the one who Cristina got sent to stay with?

I, too, was interested in seeing Tess go back to work and see how she managed being in gunshot-wound pain while on the job. Although I guess morphine works pretty good, not that I know anything about that. Guessing she called in sick, blue-flu bug maybe?

Woz vs. Stahl at the diner is still my fav scene of the entire season.

Finale ends with Miguel getting his neck snapped?  Hell yeah, that's one way to end an season!  Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.  He was pretty much saying he was just going to use Harlee like a sex toy and didn't matter if she liked it or not.  And then that stuff he was saying about Cristina was really starting to creep me out. As far as I'm concerned, Harlee totally did the right thing.  Now, of course, I suspect others on the show might look at it differently.  I'm guessing the reason they brought back Jaime to witness all of her scenes with Miguel, is so he starts wondering if she just straight up murdered him, like she was threatening to do in his mother's house.  Unless Harlee finds some way to get the body out of there and not call it in.  Still, I'm guessing this will play a big part in the second season.

I totally knew Donnie was going to die, but I didn't see it ending at Lomen's hands.  That was nuts!  Really curious to see where they are heading with him.  He seems to be slowly embracing his team's style now, and has them and even Woz respecting him.  Is there still going be some of that noble cop in him, or as he truly, for a lack of a better word, broke bad here.?

Man, is Stahl an asshole.  Sleeping with Chen, even though he totally knew he was going to use her as his scapegoat.  I hope she finds some way to remain in the picture and get back at that creep.

Woz finally figures out that Harlee is the mole, but "forgives" her (somewhere, Saperstien is just like "Thanks, you jerk!"), and turns himself in.  But it sounds like Harlee gave him some kind of dirt on Stahl.  I wonder what it is?  He already knew about Stahl's Harlee obsession, so what else does Harlee know that could bring down Stahl?

Not a perfect series, but I thought they ended it well, and Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta carried it perfectly.  I will be back next season.

I think so. Cristina called her Aunt Gemma so I think it's safe to assume she and Harlee are sisters.

Did she even get any morphine? (For the record, had it after an appendectomy, it was wonderful but left me light-headed and dizzy once it started wearing off.) Did the doctor even ever look at her? I think all we saw was Espada making a mess trying to get the bullet out so I totally buy her being too exhausted to come in. Though it would have been interesting her trying to hide it.

What did he say about Cristina? I couldn't hear/understand everything he was saying with all his gross slurping all over Harlee, ugh.

I can't remember the exact words (something like Daddy's home, maybe?) but between that yuckiness and earlier when he picked her up from the hotel and was all "you remind me so much of your mother" it felt like there were heavy implications of him planning to engage in incest with her. I can't believe I just typed that out but that was the vibe I got. So gross. Glad he's gone and hope he's off to the crematorium next. What a convenient little thing for the team to have next season, by the way, an abandoned funeral parlor.

This is what Miguel said :

"We made that beautiful creature together. Smart, eager and feisty like her mother. Yet so fragile. You're gonna take everything I give you and you're gonna act like you like it, and you're gonna beg for more.  And I'm not just gonna punish you. I'm gonna punish that precious little girl of yours."

It's a close second to my fave: Woz bolts from the confessional.  Father Sometimey goes: (paraphrasing) Are you leaving because you think God won't forgive you?  Woz goes:  No, I'm leaving cause I got two more people to hurt.    Yessss Ray, come through on your line delivery bruh!

Gramma knew Cristina existed - they had that exchange where Harlee reads her for filth for never intervening during all the times Miguel was beating her.  She drops off the backpack of money and says: he knows what this is, tell him to stay the hell away from me and my daughter.  Abuelita says please Harlee, I respected your wishes when she was a baby but now that I've met her....   That's karma for your ass mawmaw.

Binge watched season 1 this weekend.  For me to wind up rooting for Woz against Stahl, that's a piece of good show right there.

Okay until I got through with all ya'lls comments I was starting to feel like the only one reading into his lecherous ass looks at her and the slick stuff he said.   When he was about to rape Harlee though?  She knew exactly what he meant and though I didn't see it coming, I issued a PSA to no one in particular - oh this fool has to go.    That look? =  I am that bitch, you should've believed me when I told that you the first time.

So, we're supposed to go along with that not one of these very intelligent men can see her, suddenly finding them irresistible is not a ploy of manipulation or they know and don't care because, well, Harlee/JLo.

Where are you guys talking about all the other episodes?  I have questions?  Like I don't really understand Saperstein's "deal"  did he call the feds, if so, why?  I thought his only problem was talking to that Brazilian lady on the clock.   oh and that leads to my next question, why Tufo? Futo?  about to rape her until he saw the bruise?  Like, in what world does that make sense?

I was shocked at Woz' kindness toward the kid (Donnie's "nephew").  I was bracing for the moment he held his hand over the kid's mouth or something.

Thank goodness Loman (involuntarily) turned into something as bad as they are.  It's not that the do-gooder thing was driving me crazy but he wanted to change his squad into different people and shit, it is way the hell too late for that.  And he's too old not to know it.

The timeline has to be at least two weeks long.   Harlee yells at Stahl at one point for back dating Saperstein's immunity two weeks.    And p.s. I'm still pretty salty about the whole way Woz gets to kill him.   Harlee listens to his confession (in the hospital chapel no less) and then believes him when he promises he'll leave Sap alone?  Girl, really?  p.p.s. if you're a patient during a bomb threat, I guess it's every man for himself huh?  Some stone cold shit.

Due to my Sopranos loyalty, there probably aren't any conditions under which I will dislike Drea DeMatteo so I want her to get back to telling her husband she cheated on him too.  I just don't want her to do it while she's vulnerable.

Yeah, the only thing was a bit of a mix up/miscommunication. Woz assumed that because Sap was somewhere he wasn't supposed to be on the clock (and the fact that Sap lied about where he was in the midst of Woz's rat paranoia) he assumed Sap was the mole. Harlee got the feds to intervene and get together a protection deal for Sap, but because they backdated the papers, it only confirmed Woz's incorrect suspicions.
