The Duggars: In the Media and TLC

Guest

As a reminder, the site's Politics Policy remains in effect.  Yes, Jim Bob is apparently running for office again. That does not make it an acceptable topic of conversation in here - unless for some mysterious reason, TLC brings the show back and it is discussed on there. Even then, it would be limited to how it was discussed on the show.

If you have any questions, please PM the mods, @SCARLETT45 and myself.

The Bates family has 3 pregnancies

Did I miss a recent announcement?  Erin and Whitney are due soon.

I think Jana's wedding would be a good draw because people have been waiting so long for it.  Jinger's would be more like Jessa's and Joy getting married would be closer to a scandal I fear.

I'm laughing about getting the backlash about Josh.  It's going to a loooooonnnggg time before people forget about his scandals.

I think OP meant that they've HAD three pregnancies in quick succession that they have already made bank on? The two current pregnancies won't deliver this "season," so they're guaranteed at least one more season as Whitney and Erin deliver Kaci and Brooklyn this summer. I believe it was stated in Chad's blog that Brooklyn would be like Carson and not go full-term, so expect her in early August, which cuts down UP's budget creating more plotlines while waiting for her to arrive.

That said, the Duggars have NOTHING on the table right now to film, unless they are hiding a courtship or pregnancy announcement from Jill or Jessa. Even so, it'll be months before any wedding bells ring or baby is delivered. And let's face it, Jill's bungled mess of a delivery and Jessa's bleedout were more depressing than entertaining TV.

Ah I was too literal once again.  :)

Jill's delivery did give us gossip fodder but wasn't good TV.

I don't know what they would produce from the Duggars now but then I have that same question about several TLC shows.  They've run through the entire TLC playbook with the Duggars though I think.

I agree that the Duggar playbook's looking pretty old and tired and tattered by now.

I wonder if the TLC programming genius(es) who committed to the J&JCO spinoff last year, expected Jill and Jessa to be chips off their maternal block as procreators. I can imagine the conversations back in Spring/Summer 2015, something like this:

Programming exec 1: Look, these are the married daughters. They are going to be pumping out a baby a year, apiece.

Programming exec 2: Wow, the viewers like babies. Babies are ratings gold.

PE 1: Yep. Jill's just had that baby boy, what's his name, and Jessa's going to pop one out this fall.

PE 2: Israel.

PE 1: What?

PE 2: They named the kid Israel. Jill and whatshisname. Named their baby son Israel.

PE 1: Well, that's kinda strange for a couple of Baptists. But Jessa and Ben are younger and I think they may want to come off as more hip. They won't go all creepy religious with their baby name.

PE 2: Okay, so Jill popped her baby and Jessa will deliver in the fall. Then, won't Jill turn up pregnant again pretty soon after that?

PE 1: Well, Michelle was a pretty awesome baby maker, and they are her daughters and they are all always talking about babies. So, yeah. Why wouldn't she?

PE 2: But didn't Jill have a hard time with that birth? Emergency C section?

PE 1: Okay, so it was rough. But, come on. She's always talking about wanting to have a lot of kids.

PE 2: Sure. So, the concept is that we'll have Jessa popping out a baby this fall, then soon after that Jill will turn up pregnant again. And she'll have that one, and it will be time for Jessa to be knocked up again.

PE 1: And, viewers love babies. The Duggars are all about making babies. Jill and Jessa are going to be making babies and ratings for us just like their mother did.

PE 2: Ratings gold!

PE 1: Slam dunk, man. We just can't go wrong with this.

Heh. TLC may have counted on Jill and Jessa to keep pumping out babies, but it hasn't happened. Also, I wonder if TLC didn't count on advertiser backlash, or even if it wasn't a surprise, TLC thought/thinks they can ride it out.

Not to mention his barnstorming the country hectoring others about their sexual morality at the same time as he perpetrated scandal number two (and had still failed to make any amends or seek any counseling for scandal number one). If he (and his parents) weren't such loudmouthed hypocritical preachy prick(s) through it all, I expect people wouldn't still be raging this far after the fact.

That's exactly it. Plenty of people far more prominent than Josh Duggar have done some pretty bad  things and you no longer hear about it after a few weeks.  I think the same thing would have happened with Josh were it not for the following:

  • being loudmouthed, hypocritical, preachy jerks
  • attemping to cover up scandal #1
  • making the daughters take the fall
  • the outrage toward Boob and ME-Chelle for not getting proper help for their kids
  • continuing to be loud mouthed preachy jerks after scandals
  • family grifting for wedding gifts and missioncation donations
  • their desperation to remain relevant by grifting, and self righteous social media posts

Most people faced with scandals ride out the storm quietly.  These people post every time they poop. Overwhelmingly, posts about the Duggar family go something like this: they are disgusted by things Josh did but most of the vitriol is reserved for Boob and Michelle.  Josh won't have  a chance to move on until he distances himself from his family, denounces the Duggar way, and joins a more moderate church.

Someone posted this the other day, and I was struck that the writer of the article didn't note that the case has been put on hold because the lead lawyer for the plaintiffs has been thrown off the case. Turns out that he was playing both sides of the fence (his dad, Gibbs, Sr., speaks at the ATI homeschool camps). Those young women were totally victimized yet again. I feel so horrible for them. I hope that they can regroup and find a reputable lawyer who can take ILBP and Gothard for all they're worth.

And FWIW, the reason the Bateses can say they don't associate with Gothard anymore is because Gil, Dr. Paine, and one other board member were the force that kicked out Gothard for good, then installed their guy in the head spot. The rest of the board apparently sided with Gothard and resigned. Of course, IBLP is still peddling the same crap, and Gil Bates is front and center, so one has to listen very carefully to what a Bates says vs. what they actually do (which is speak at IBLP camps, etc.). What I am curious about is Chad and Erin's real involvement: are they still attending Big Sandy and Nashville conferences?

We know the Duggars are still going - all of them save Jill this year - even if they've been taken off the speakers' list.

We will probably just see them with a book in their hands, which isn't the same thing.  Although I'm certain Dim Boob thinks we are all as ignorant as his brood, meaning we won't be able to tell the difference.

Can anyone read what the diplomas say, other than Duggar Academy?

I think this was a cheap cellphone pic. I enlarged it as much as I could but the diploma text just kept getting fuzzier and fuzzier. Not enough pixels to read it, it seems.

I'm sure the small print is just some generic stuff about completing their education and moving on to do bigger and better things.  I'm also pretty sure that all that stuff came with the template the Duggars used to create the stupid diplomas.

I'm more interested in what the small print would say if the Duggar spawn didn't have to show the diplomas to the rest of the world.  Bible verses would abound, coupled with admonishments to minister to the fallen masses by both word (Duggar-speak) and deed (stay at home afraid of the world under JB's umbrella and look patronizingly upon everyone else).

There would also be instructions to cleave to whatever poor sap JB pairs you up with, and make sure that your courtship, wedding, and married life is fully documented for TLC.  Don't forget to sign over your payments to Duggar Family Enterprises.

Implicit is the understanding that you make inappropriate statements or actually film footage of your newfound wonderful sex life (ie: dry humping on a golf course) while making it crystal clear that everything you do is holier than anything anyone watching could ever do.  Of course, you or your wife must give birth to the latest blessing on camera; extra points awarded for grossness or coming close to dying and then claiming that no one died because God loves you the most.

I'm sure there's more, like covering up the molestation his sisters by Josh, and following Gothard's teachings

Yep, those Duggar kids may not be able to read, write, or reason past a third grade level, but they've graduated from the infamous Duggar Academy!  God help them.  Then again, it's said that God watches over children and fools.  Those Duggar kids are both.

Yep, Everyone still hates you, Duggars.

F that ice cream shop for posting Jim Bob and Michelle's mugs, and being proud of it.

Sweet Loring responded with a tweet of their statement regretting the incident. “On behalf of Sweet Loring we apologize for all the distress our post has caused,” they wrote. “We do not support the views of the Duggar family, that was not our intention. We respect our community however we do not condone negative comments of any sort on our page therefore we will be removing the post. And again we welcome Everyone to our Shop.”

Everyone. Even those apathetic about molestation.

Wow! The comments are blistering.

At least Jinger's smile looks authentic. And she appears affectionate. That's a less disturbing picture of both. J & M still look like boobs.

And they're in Laredo. Maybe Jeremy will sweep her away from the Ark.

I guess it's time to show the parents that he can provide well enough for he and Jinger. If he was careful with his soccer money, he might have done ok.

Any restaurant that serves the Duggars now seems to take the heat. If you owned a business and a Duggar walked in, I'm sure as long as it wasn't Smuggar , Boob, or The Termite Queen, you likely wouldn't bolt the door, particularly if you had patrons in the place.  You might just have to be polite even though you were holding your nose the whole time. Likely, you would receive an equal amount of venom from the haters and the Huggers no matter how polite you were.  Even though I loathe Boob, TQ, and Smuggar, at the end of the day, I would have to ask myself how I would want to be treated.

You're probably okay if nobody photographs it. Of course, with today's photography climate, you'd probably have to confiscate the devices of everyone in the place to be sure that didn't happen ....

Probably not like a superior form of life, if I were actually guilty of (or covering up) horrible crimes. That was also clearly a posed shot, with the company's consent (and copy of the pic), not a random creep shot (which is going too far).

The problem isn't the photography but the perception that you support the same beliefs and values (be they political or religious) if you are too polite to decline to be photographed with the Duggars or anyone else you dislike. If you agree to do it or decline, the pitchforks from either side are going to be out anyway. You can't win, no matter what you say or do.

The Duggalos are making an album of their courtship.  They would take a photo of a pile of dog poo if they thought there was some story about it, so a chaperoned date is fair game.

It's not just being photographed... they put it on their damn facebook page! That's using it as advertising and support. "You covered up molestation? Here, have a free banana split. Mind if we snap a pic first?"

I wonder if businesses take a financial hit after the duggars are shown at their establishments. Could you see it now, "Quick, lock the door, turn off the lights, pretend we're closed.  It's the Duggars!!"

Yes. Remember some months ago when either Jill or Jessa posted an Instagram pic of them in a frozen yogurt place somewhere near the TTC? The name of the place was visible and it drew some comment. However, the shop proprietors issued a message, I think on SM, that the Duggars were just there as customers, they weren't in cahoots with the Duggs, yada yada. And everyone moved on. At the time, I figured Jessa/Jill was posting it probably because they got comp'ed, or hoping to get comp'ed. Don't think it worked, heh.

In this case, the shop proprietors posed in the photo, and posted the photo, as @JoanArc pointed out, to promote their shop. That's a different flavor of sundae indeed, and it's encouraging to see they got some backlash.

IMO, nobody needs to hound the footsteps of any Duggar as they go about their personal lives. But - when they post sh*t on social media, clearly intended for public consumption, especially while their TV show is in production? IMO, that stuff is fair game, and that includes their advertisers/supporters.

Sort of like if Motel 6 saw them coming, they wouldn't leave on the lights.

Not allowing the Duggars into an establishment would be very Duggarish.

Posing for a photo with them, and posting it on a business account, is at the very least naive and unaware, maybe stupid, and at the most a statement of hate.

Care For Our Animals

And TLC screws over old fans yet again, by transferring all of the years-old Facebook likes from the 19 Kids page to the Counting On page, with no one consenting or knowing about it, until it was discovered last evening. More than one million old likes now appear on the Jill & Jessa: Counting On page. Facebook allows the likes merge if you're simply re-doing an older page, which TLC is not. The show is different with public statements rom TLC in the past promising no parents appearing. TLC twisted FB policy and transferred the likes anyways, making more than one million people fans, who have probably never watched one episode, or care to. Yes. People are royally pissed off.

I found this and thought it interesting.

That is a lot effed up.

And, how do they even do that? They carry over the total? Like someone could make a page of sunshine and unicorns and gain a zillion likes, then merge it with a page of hate and take all the likes with them??

Yes.  That's why you'll see piles of posts for "like this page to show you hate hunger" or "love puppies" or whatever.  The person farms for likes for a page then sells it to some company wanting a pre-liked page (so that it'll show up more readily on people's feeds).

Wow. And do the names follow the likes? Or are they nameless likes?
