Why does she think it is up to everyone else to "teach" her?

My take on this is that this is Raven's <somewhat phony> attempt at humility.  In other words, she's allowing someone else to feel superior to her, thus she must recognize that she has shortcomings and areas of lesser knowledge, so that must make her a good person b/c she's admitting to it.  BAHHHH!

ETA:  Thank you, Medicine Crow, for the after show clip!  Still not understanding why I can't access it today, as I had no problem doing so last week.

Are they contractually obligated to advertise all ABC shows - don't they have any discretion at all?

Those are the only guests they can get.

Grow up Raven....you're 30 years old. IMO she cannot understand she, herself, is a role model. Why does she think it is up to everyone else to "teach" her? Good grief......she could easily be a teacher with 6 or 7 years of experience behind her.

Not to mention, you know, pick up a book.. Oh, wait, that would cut into her Candy Crush time. Edited by Haleth

Sorry Candace, but the OJ trial was not the first real-life trial that had people glued to their sets.  That would be the Pamela Smart trial. Okay, her trial wasn't national, I don't think, but I do remember people not minding their soaps being pre-empted because her trial was "good soap!"  That was in 1991.  The OJ Simpson trial was in 1994.

I didn't click on the After Show link, (my computer throws fits about videos for some reason) did they discuss Nicole's and Ron's families reactions about the show? I've seen clips of Nicole's  sister blasting The People versus OJ Simpson, and I don't blame her for being upset obviously. It's probably reopening a lot of wounds that never really got to heal.

Michelle wasn't on. Thank you. She gives me headaches.

I swear Candace is starting to remind of me of Elizabeth and I feel sad. I can't even watch Full House anymore.

Nice/interesting to see Marcia Clark after all this time.

And two random bits:  Joy's new hair looks great, and Whoopi is so thirsty for acceptance when any member of the panel lavishes praise on other actors (Richard Dryfuss and Blythe Danner).  She NEEDS to be included in the club.   SHE is a legendary thespian, too.  Except, not really.

I totally agree with your post.

Marcia Clark was really interesting & touched on a couple of points (what was going on behind the scenes that we weren't privy to during the first trial) that makes me want to see the show.  That, & I just discovered I have FX & didn't know it.

I thought Joy's hair was very flattering & more befitting her age.

I tune Miss Whoopi out when she starts blathering, so I didn't catch that, but I think CCB's interruption & questions re Jaws were on her "cards".  Poor dear.

I think it's apparent I like The Muppets and will miss their show when it's gone. It's a show that when I watch live or after DVR'ing it I'm actually distracted from what life is like now for me for a bit. As I've gotten older I've also gotten used to having taste different than most. I'd rather watch the segment with Miss Piggy than another one with Stacey London giving fashion tips and etc.

I missed the show today and have yet to watch. When I watch the after show though I go to the ABC News site and click on 'Live' on the upper right side and you'll see The Spew's live stream as an option. The streaming video size is bigger and you can watch it without having to go full screen.

Watergate?  The Iran Contra hearings?  I know what you are saying and I know what she is saying, but still.  I was not even born for the first and was an infant for the second and I know they were pretty huge.

But in terms of what she is referring to I'd say the Menendez Brothers were simply huge.  Again too young but I remember watching clips of it on tv and how the female lawyer was a huge deal and how she once kept rubbing the back of the 'good looking' brother.  Not sure if it was VH1 or Frontline or something in between!

For me, Raven seems stuck on trying to stay relevant to the teen demographic.  It is like her first meeting with producers and her agents back when she was that age stressed the appeal to dollars aspect and she has decided to stay arrested in that area.  She simply updates what is appealing and holds on to it like it is a life preserver.  I think that is why she has this candy crush fix and is all about social media as the only source of information.  I don't think she is being humble so much as she is playing the fresh faced ingenue among all these old 'sages'.  Plus too often I see her do that thing that my oldest nieces do, they start pushing ignorance as an excuse not to take the next step.  I think we all did it at one time.  The whole 'I don't know how' bit (my parents taught me real fast that didn't work to my chagrin). And I still see people use it in one way or another.  We have become a society that thinks ignorance in certain forms actually is an admirable thing.  How many times on reality shows are their people who try to look elite by claiming ignorance in simple common sense areas.  Not being able to cook or clean or even drive as if they are so privileged they did not need to learn until know.  I see some of that in Raven in that I think she not only thinks it makes her look cute and young but it also suggests that she doesn't need to know.  The premise is if something is not important enough than that transfers simply to her being too important to have to bother.

D'OH! You're right. I was a baby during Watergate, but I do remember Iran Contra. Hell, I remember Maury Povich using the Brady Bunch theme, using all nine people involved and even had the tune to the theme song when reporting on this.  And I was a tween.

Yes, the Menendez brothers was huge, but I remember a rape trial that was even more famous: that cousin of the Kennedys, who was only a Kennedy on his mother's side, but using the name. The DA in that case was just awful. But that was televised and I remember talking about that case with friends at work. I was in high school, but we all worked part-time at Sears. Shut up! It was considered uberly kewl to work there back then!

William Kennedy Smith.  Rapist.

He's continued to be a real gem. His wiki profile says....

"In 2004, a former employee of the Center for International Rehabilitation alleged that Smith had sexually assaulted her in 1999, and brought a civil action against him.[9] Smith denied her charges, calling them "outrageous" and saying that "family and personal history have made me unusually vulnerable to these kinds of charges" and resigned from the CIR. On January 5, 2005, the court dismissed the employee's lawsuit.

Later in 2005, Smith settled with another employee who accused him of sexual harassment."

I watched the first episode after listening to Marcia - it is worthwhile, imo. So many behind the scenes that those of us that followed this in the 90's were not aware of.

Same here maggiemae.  Once in a while this show turns me on to something I'm glad to know about.   I only decided to watch after the Marcia Clark interview.   I had no idea she 1) had small kids at the time and 2) was going through a nasty divorce/custody battle.    I am so glad Joy did that interview and that MC posted the rest of it here.

I thought Raven was Sunny when they all walked out.

I wish it had been. She makes Sunny sound like a brain surgeon in comparison.

I still see Raven's addition to the panel as The View's (failed) attempt to channel The Real. I'm not a fan of The Real--although I do like Loni Love--and yet Raven is much worse than any of the child star rejects on that show.

Catching up on your insightful comments:

Marcia Clark does look awesome now!  Loved her interview and she writes novels!   Joy is so good.

It really bothers me that CCB READS her (overly-long) questions from the cards.  Seriously, can't these people prepare any better?  CCB is supposed to be an actress also--does she not remember lines without a prompter? (I heard Blythe Danner talk about how she needed cards for very technical, medical lines and she is a true actress, so I give her a giant pass). CCB, not so much (neither a pass nor being a real actress).

Raven talking about how much she doesn't know about, um, anything except social media, reminds me of how people are proud of not understanding or being able to do math. No one would be proud of not being able to read, so it bugs me.   I did research on math anxiety in college.  (Didn't Whoopi justify her incapability to  read the prompter with dyslexia?  And her eye problem is why she smokes pot?)  Stupidity is not endearing.  Why doesn't anyone mentor her?  Properly?

Sears was cool?  Sorry, GHScorpiosrule, In what universe?  LOL.

So glad Dr Pill was there to tell us Gossip Is Bad.

also Raven is kind of fascinating in a case study kind of way. If I had to pick between her and Michelle as full time Id say keep Raven and Michelle can pop in from time to time.

The thing about CCB is that she truly is a nice person who believes what she believes. Unlike Elisabeth who did it because of who knows why, CCB speaks from her heart. with that being said she is best suited to pop up from time to time too.

I'm all for Sara Haines. She's intelligent and warm hearted and a good addition. I also like her and Paula together. the two of them just seem like normal people who can hold a conversation and see it from multiple sides which this show needs.

I also want Sunni full time or at least a few times a week. She's intelligent and a good mix of liberal and conservative views. Plus she's the only one who has ever truly gone against Whoopi (Pauals been close). Whoopi can stick around as long as there's some opposition.

Sears was cool?  Sorry, GHScorpiosrule, In what universe?  LOL.

Yes! Sears was Kewl! During the mid 80s, and it's where, shockingly, a lot of the popular kids worked! Well, those that did work. Working there, I made friends with folks I never thought I had anything in common with, since we all know how cliquish high school was/is. And finding out that most were nice people. Back then, at least my Sears, actually had great clothes that I could buy, and if it didn't have what I wanted, the money I made allowed me to go to the mall.

  • Love 3

In remembering Whoopi's advice because of her vast experience raising a child--she had to give up jobs and/or fun because it was more important to be with her daughter, I wonder if there will ever be a "Whoopi Dearest" book or movie when she's gone.

Man, THAT would be a book I WOULD buy!!!  (But it would be just like The Whoopster to have a codicil in her will to ensure it would not be in her "kid's" best interest [financially] to spill the beans.)

Air head Sara Haines is 4 for 4 so far this week and Whoopi is announcing her at the start.

How would be received if Michelle started appearing endlessly in her spot on GMA? I doubt they could pull that off, but on The View it seems ok to have airhead Sara Haines day after day, week after week??

She'll be gone soon (& I don't envy her quality of life down the road).

I'm all for Sara Haines. She's intelligent and warm hearted and a good addition.

We will have to agree to disagree on this! I'd take Bitsy over her.

I don't think Michelle is the best and she could be better without the lame jokes.  The View doesn't use the co-hosts and contributors (which there is no shortage of) hired for their own show. It is really the principle of the thing.

Rosie Perez was horrible and she never got the "time out" chair.

I missed it today. Though I do think I heard Dr Phil in the background and I'm glad I didn't watch. Dude needs to lose the Dr part. He doesn't have a license from what I understand.

Actually, (from Wiki):

Education and career

McGraw graduated in 1975 from Midwestern State University with a B.A. in psychology. He went on to earn an M.A. in experimental psychology in 1976, and a Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology in 1979 at the University of North Texas,[9] where his dissertation was titled "Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention".[10] McGraw was guided through the doctoral program by Frank Lawlis, who later became the primary contributing psychologist for the Dr. Phil television show.[11]

After obtaining his doctorate, McGraw joined his father, Joe McGraw, in Wichita Falls, Texas, where the elder McGraw had established his private psychology practice.[12]

In 1983, McGraw and his father joined Thelma Box, a successful Texas businesswoman, in presenting "Pathways" seminars, "experience-based training which allows individuals to achieve and create their own results."[13] Critics claim that many of the "phrases and the terminology and the quaint sayings" used by McGraw on the Oprah and Dr. Phil shows were coined by Box and presented by McGraw in this seminar. McGraw admits that some of the material from Life Strategies, his first best-seller, is taken directly from the Pathways seminar. However, he has never mentioned Box or her contributions to his success in any of his books or TV shows.[14] Eight years after joining Box, McGraw signed an agreement for the sale of his Pathways seminar stock for $325,000 without notifying either his father or Box of the impending sale.[14] Box founded her own seminars entitled "Choices."[15]

Also from Wiki, re Dr. Phil's license:

Also after starting CSI, McGraw ceased the practice of psychology. He kept his license current and in good standing until he elected to retire it 15 years later in 2006.[21] Appearing on the Today Show in January 2008, McGraw said that he has made it "very clear" that his current work does not involve the practice of psychology. He also said that he had "retired from psychology".[22] According to the Today Show, the California Board of Psychology determined in 2002 that he did not require a license because his show involves "entertainment" rather than psychology.[22].McGraw's license is currently listed by the Texas State Board of Psychology as "retired" and he holds no other active licenses to practice in any other state

LOL Vinyasa.  Every time I see Sara at the table I think of you.  I understand; Sara doesn't bother me (yet) but there are plenty people and things on this show that drive me crazy too.  As far as not using the co-hosts featured in the opening, I think that's just more of the same lazy production values this show has always had.

Properly?

Raven needs to put down her Twitter and read a book or 50.   She's on a show where she is expected to comment on topics like politics but admits everything she knows about politics is from House of Cards.  She doesn't know anything because no one taught her anything, blah blah blah.  At 30 years old she needs to self educate (and not from Twitter)  or at least shut up about how little she knows about everything outside of "the industry" and social media.    I really don't think Raven is dumb, but I do think she is completely ignorant and is happy to be that way.  Unfortunately, sitting on 40 million dollars or whatever probably won't motivate her to go to school.

In remembering Whoopi's advice because of her vast experience raising a child--she had to give up jobs and/or fun because it was more important to be with her daughter, I wonder if there will ever be a "Whoopi Dearest" book or movie when she's gone.

I don't know what the daughter could say though; she has allowed Whoopi to support her and her children (and probably now grandchildren) all her life.  There isn't any evidence that she ever went to school or had her own career outside of stay at home mother, which is fine of course if someone can afford it - or in this case are willing to let their Movie Stah mom support them for life. And because of this,  I doubt Alex would have anything very interesting (or newsworthy) to say about her mother.

I stand corrected on the license thing then. I thought I read something that said he lost it due to misconduct or something, but I could be mixing him up with someone else. I still don't like him though.

The only reason I knew about Dr. $hil is because I followed Oprah from Day One, so I was quite familiar with his credentials (or lack thereof).  I watched a few of his shows & arrived at the conclusion that I didn't him & he hasn't given me a reason to change my mind.

I agree to a point, Cosmocrush, but if Whoopi's gone and there's no possibility of "celebrity" for her daughter, perhaps a little tell-all that explains she rarely saw her mother for the first five? ten? years of her life and her sorrows over that might be tempting.

The Draft:  I think in the "old days," guys would receive some kind of 60-day notification that they would be drafted.  The ones I knew (Vietnam era) then rushed to join a branch of the service where they'd test into jobs that met their talents--or at least try.  I don't know how a modern draft would work.   My note: CCB, there are many American men (many!) today taking care of the home and children while their wives serve in the military.  If they weren't initially capable of running a house, they learned.

My question: Why would your girls be worth more than my boys?  I'd have just as strong a feeling about having my boys (if they were still boys) drafted as any mother of girls would feel.

ETA:  As I grew into an adult, I realized I could handle many situations (emotionally) and some situations (physically) so much better than some of my male friends.  I'm logical, calm, and good in emergencies--not a worrier.  I could never say that for my husb...uh...ex-husband.  We need to judge people on an individual basis--not on gender.  I thought that would have been a given decades ago.

He acted annoyed by Joy the last time he was on. Good. I'm sure Joy cares as little about Dr. Phil's opinion as the rest of the world. Anyone who doesn't fall over themselves praising his words of wisdom probably gets on his nerves.

Thankfully, I missed today's show. Hopefully, Raven will disappear again. Please begone in 2 months... *fingers crossed*

Dr. phil is a doctor because he earned a phD degree.  However, he cannot call himself a psychologist, because he is not licensed -  not any more.

http://www.casewatch.org/board/psych/mcgraw.shtml

Disciplinary Action against Phillip McGraw, Ph.D.

Stephen Barrett, M.D.

In January 1989, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists reprimanded Phillip McGraw, Ph.D. for having an inappropriate dual relationship with a patient. As noted below, the Board concluded that McGraw had hired a former patient and that "probable cause existed with regard to a possible failure to provide proper separation between termination of therapy and the initiation of employment." McGraw was required to undergo a psychological evaluation, complete a course in professional ethics, and have his practice monitored for one year. His complaint file was closed in June 1990 after the Board determined that he had satisfactorily complied with its order.

Basically, you cannot enter into any business relationship with a therapy client, because of the possibility of exploiting them.

and -  here is a very good summary of it - http://everydaypsychology.com/2008/01/is-dr-phil-actually-psychologist.html#.VrO-VrIrLcs

they refer to Dr. Phil as an "entertainer working in the field of pop psychology"

Dr. Phil never refers to himself as a psychologist. He certainly knows that to do so would bring him into conflict with California law. Unless you are working for the government or working in academia, you can't represent yourself as being a psychologist unless you hold a valid license. It's the same as with an attorney or a physician. You can't act like you are a physician unless you have a medical license. If you didn't pass the bar or you lost your license, you can't say that you are an attorney.........

Following from the above comments, Dr. Phil went on to "explain" why he didn't need a license. He said that he didn't need a license because the only reason you need one is to "hang out a shingle" for private practice and to accept fees from the public. That's just not correct, and it's also misleading. The licensing law also says that you you can't act like you're a psychologist.

And then, in a comment that stunned me, Dr. Phil said: "I do, however, still have 30 years of experience, (and) a hard-earned Ph.D in clinical psychology ... I am certainly eligible to be licensed in California so far as education, training and experience." Emphasizing his point, he included the imperative: "So you still have to call me Dr. Phil."

This statement is the very essence of what California law says that someone is not supposed to do unless they are actually a psychologist. It doesn't matter in the least bit if you don't take any fees and if you aren't in "private practice." You still can't go around acting like you have the credential. His statement about the law was entirely inaccurate. The fact that he does not accept any fees for his services gets him out from underneath any complaint that he practices psychology (on TV), but it does not absolve him for misrepresenting his professional status, or lack thereof.....................

A lot of this came up when he made some sort of intervention with Britney Spears.  there was a complaint filed against him.   He behaved unethically , partly because he stepped out of the "entertainer"  role and acted like a psychologist.  He visited Britney Spears at a hospital, (therefore acting like a psychologist)  and then, talked about her to the media, violating her privacy.   If he was licensed, he could have faced disciplinary actions for violating a patient's confidentiality, and most likely would have lost his license.

If you are a licensed therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist, your are subject to the ethical code of your profession.  IF you don't have a license, you are not subject to the ethical code - like confidentiality.  BUT - you also can't "act like a psychologist".

Dr. Phil regularly puts people's issues and lives in front of television cameras.   This would be against the ethical code of any professional organization.  Pain and suffering are not supposed to be televised as entertainment.  If he was a licensed psychologist, anyone appearing on his shows could make a complaint and he could lose his license for exploiting them on TV.  By choosing NOT to have a license, he has no obligation to abide by the code.

He's kind of found the loophole -  he can call himself "Dr.", but not a psychologist, and he doesn't have to be ethical because he's just  an entertainer.

I have no respect for him.  Putting families on TV like he does can be very harmful to the kids, who don't have the ability to not consent to being on the show.   Imagine all your family secrets, even videos of family conflict, being on TV for everyone to see.  Then imagine having to go to school and face people the next day.  or having it come back to haunt you when you want to date someone, or apply for a job, anything.   And there's nothing you can do, because it's ENTERTAINMENT, not therapy.

  • Love 14

That sound you hear is me banging my head on my table.

Jeebus Cripes. Now taking money from big companies/those with big pockets for speaking engagements is akin to dating a guy who has expectations of getting some? Strings attached? And I loved Hillary's response why she took the money: "they offered." I know I wouldn't turn it down.  She's not a mouth piece for Goldman Sachs. At least, what I've heard her speak about isn't something that it stands for or represents.  I don't recall Anderson or anyone ever asking any of the male candidates, present OR in the past, why THEY took money for speaking engagements.

Shut up, Phil. I think everyone knows that gossip is bad, but we as a society don't give a fuck, because nothing like raising celebrities up to glory in taking them down, or shit talking about people behind their backs. It's not a new phenomenon.  Shut up, Candace. Clearly, she needs to have a dictionary on hand, because she doesn't know what gossip means. Celebrities or people putting stuff out on Twitter, Instagram, or any other social media about themselves is not gossiping!

That all said, color me shocked, shocked! I say, that I agreed with Candace about how all this Christie talk about kicking Obama's ass, Hillary's ass, anyone who doesn't agree with him or asks him questions he doesn't like ass, as being childish.  And that all nominees should just talk about the issues. But that didn't last long. See above.

I don't know if it's just me, but I found it insulting that Raven asked all the questions about Nina Simone's life to the director? writer? of the documentary, instead of her daughter.  She just sat there, like some trophy. And only talked when Whoopi asked her a question. Who would know better about the struggles of Nina Simone? It was just a total disconnect for me.  And I LOVE that Song "Sinnerman!"

I do have to say, I laughed at the faces Whoopi made when Phil was talking about "pecking a pig."  When she's not on her high horse and full of herself, Whoopi does amuse me and make me laugh.

The Draft: Candance and Sara can both STFU. About women being the more daintier and weaker sex and not up to par in combat and how they have "more on their shoulders" than the big manly men. You want to fight for your country? Then be ready to be drafted, IF that is activated again.
