Mildred was a hoot, and the deaf hunter was cool.  Go for the deaf hunter (sorry forgot her name) Sam, she likes you.  Also calling it now, Dean is pining for Donna, and not Amara or Cas.

 

Really enjoyable episode that was a throwback to old school episodes.  About time they brought in a banshee.

Really enjoyed tonight's episode. Loved Dee wallace hitting on Dean. I spent most of the episode dreading that Mildred was connected to the Banshee or something. Glad she was revealed to be evil.

Loved Amanda (i think that was her name). I hope she gets to come back and work with the boys again.

I think Misha is doing a pretty good job at playing Lucifer. Looking forward to how that whole Darkness thing gets resolved

I don't like the implication that Dean is pining for Amara.

And I thought Misha as Lucifer as Cas did a decent job.

That WAS Dee Wallace! I ended up really enjoying her little flirtation with Dean. I wasn't thrilled initially, but it ended up being pretty sweet.

I loved getting to hear Sam tell Dean he should have looked for him. And Dean saying he'd already forgiven Sam.

I've been wondering about Jensen leaving myself. But they've always said that they would continue together or end it together.  So I think it is possible they are writing for the end game now be it this season or s12.

 

Of course, I could be projecting because of him saying he read the Deadpool script which IMO means he is getting closer looks at other things. I mean I don't think they send entire scripts to people that aren't close to being cast. They might send a page or two for an audition but I would think an actor has to be in serious running to get the full script.  Unless he got a copy after the fact. 

As if Dean needs Viagara. I kind of hated that bit, but that's all on Jensen because according to Robbie Thompson on Twitter he did that as an improv.

I was so glad to see Sam apologize. And also talk to one of the people of the week again. I think it's been a while since he really interacted with one of the people in the cases (usually he has bigger potential disasters on his mind).

I loved Dee Wallace, and I guess it is more special since I got to hear her live addressing issues of acting and finding jobs.  It was fun to see them burning the body but finding out it was something new that they didn't know much about.

 

Sam's heartfelt apology was nice to see and I was fine with Dean's response.  Now maybe the fandom can heal over the mess of season 8.

 

I liked what Misha did as Casifer this time, and I'm hoping Dean will wonder more about how touchy feely -  Cas got.

 

I think I was too tired to see Dean as bait.  I thought it would be Sam.  Then when it was Dean I wondered if Cas touching him on the shoulder had done something.  I'm not wanting to see Dean pining away for Amara but Sam letting it go for now seems like a good explanation.  Forcing Dean is never a good idea.

 

I do hope a part of Cas is able to hear Dean. 

 

You know in the past any one that cares about Dean has been able to overcome the more powerful demon, so it would be a nice continuity of Dean's storyline.  I would give this one a thumbs up.  Nice to feel good about an ep.  It feels like it's been awhile.  :)

I think Dean doesn't want to be attracted to Amara, but he pretty much just confessed that he is. I think he knows that it's supernatural based, not just some weird kink on his part. But he's freaked and probably thinks it's somehow his fault.

ETA: And yes, LOVED the episode. It was fairly light hearted and feel good (despite nightmare-inducing Banshee). Mildred/Dean was cute and not remotely condescending. In fact, it seemed like Ribbie went out of his way to give us the Female Gaze this time and Dean was almost shy about it.

I really liked this episode. The "victims" of the week were smart, funny and courageous, and also saved the boy's rather tantalizing asses. (which are indeed very cute as they walk away, but still aren't a match for the pretty on the front.) Sam apologizing for not looking for Dean when he went to Purgatory was good, as was Dean's "already forgiven" response. Casifer was amusing, and is clearly going to fuck with Dean somehow, in order to lure Amara into a trap. And thanks to the poster above for the screencap of Dean pocketing the Viagra. I missed that little gem during the broadcast.

I loved the boys mentioning Blaze of Glory, as I have been advocating for years that song is perfect for the show, but was terribly disappointed they didn't actually play it. Booooo!

Mildred's open and unashamed hitting on Dean was funny, but in a good natured, not in a mocking the old lady, way. Loved her telling the deaf hunter she could have the tall one because Mildred wasn't a mountain climber and offering to move her hand further up Dean's leg. Dean should have hit that. I bet she could show him a thing or two and give him a night to remember. And our oh so celibate Sam should have asked for some "private lessons" in sign language from the pretty hunter, if ya know what I mean. She looked like she was willing to gear up and go scale Mount Sammy.

ETA  Okie dokie, now that I've watched the episode, I don't really have anything to say about it.  Which is good, for a change.  It was inoffensive, which is practically high praise these days.

 

I will say one thing, though.  I'm still tired of the secrets and lies.  Does it ever work in their favor?  *sigh*

I also took that moment as an improv by Jensen. Something about the look he gives Sam/Jared lead me to think he was looking for a reaction to his action.  

 

I'm mentally debating whether taking the Viagra would actually suit Dean's character.

 

 

ETA:  AwesomO4000, your comment about Viagra (men's curiousity plus potentially a joke on Sam) makes a huge amount of sense.  Both reasons suit Dean's character.

I watched his version of Lucifer in the last episode and agree that it was way over the top but, to be honest, I think that was done intentionally because he was dealing with groupie Rowena. She would probably want/expect grand, sweeping OOT gestures and whatnot from Lucifer. I did notice that the moment Lucifer killed her and addressed Crowley, Misha seemed to tone it right down. Sounds like that's continuing now, which is good.

 

I do hope a part of Cas is able to hear Dean.

When he pulled out the knife I thought he was just planning to kill Cas and be in for a big surprise, yet it he knew it was Luci. I get that angels can probably sense one another in their meatsuits and that an archangel might be stronger than most, but how did it he knew it was this specific archangel? Though on a separate note, given that he did somehow know, what in the world made him think he could hurt him?

I now totally ship Mildean. Mildred was awesome, and, as said above, it was played for sweetness, not laughs.

The whole episode felt like the set up for the end for the show, a kind of "don't you boys want to ride off into the sunset?" feeling. Am I alone in that?

I am SO SO SOOOO happy that they seriously addressed Sam not looking for Dean. I still wish he'd have said something like, "I just couldn't handle it." But I'll take it. And Dean saying it was already forgiven.

I liked Eileen. I liked the way Sam and Eileen interacted. I thought it was interesting that the banshee's scream was what made her deaf. I liked the back story. Is she being set up as a partner for Sam if Jensen leaves the show?

Luci being touchy-feely as Cas -- it set off some alarm bells for Dean. Sam dismissing Cas being "off" was a bit out of character. Misha playing Lucifer playing Cas -- Hah! You could see him putting on the gravelly voice, I liked that.

So Dean's revealed to "Cas" that Amara's got some kind of hold on him, and you could see Luci's gears turning as he thought of using Dean as bait for Amara.

What was the song at the end? I really like it.

And, as I understand it, angels can see true forms, so Luci in a vessel has a neon sign pointing at him if an angel sees him.

Since Cas has pulled out Angel names independent of faces, I presume they just are looking at a different wavelength and see the real "driver" of the meatsuit.  As for going after Lucifer, as Luci said - didn't see the big picture.  The better answer for the Angel was to report back to Heaven that Luci was out.  Instead he just rushed in without thinking.  Just "Die!Lucifer!Die!".

Nope. It was sort of an upbeat episode in that regard.  When Dean was young, he blatantly wanted to die before old age.  Now, old age was depicted as a much nicer way to go than a bloody blaze of glory.  I liked that. 

 

Character/plot bits:

- Sam: Kind of a perfect "in-character" episode for Sam.  Troubled by what he dealt with in the Cage. Smart about the hunt. Good version of the puppy--dog eyes with Mildred. Connecting with the other hunter in unique Sam-way. Spot-on interaction with Dean. First letting Dean drag him out of the funk and then coming clean to Dean on what was bothering him.  Sam has grown SO MUCH over the last 3 years IMO.  I'm just very happy with where he is at as a character. I hope they keep this up.  

- Dean: He was much more "upbeat" in this episode than I expected -- until the very end.  I swear, I don't think I'm reading too much into it to say that he saw Sam in a funk and pushed most of his own crap to the side to get a good "win" for them.  Plus playing the "goof" with the pills. Then, after Sam's confession, Dean got a lot more introspective and that final song was just freaking haunting.  Full of dread.  But before then, I also saw permanent character growth in Dean shining thru.  He was serious about liking the retirement home and appreciating the sunset.  He opened up to Cas (or so he thought). Which is a lesson from S9 where he didn't share the Gadreel thing with anyone.  But in the end, I think he knows the Banshee went after him because he vulnerable right now.  Something is going on with him he doesn't understand and it's fairly worrisome.  As for the pill improv:  I'm calling that "in-character" for Dean.  For one, dude generally likes to have any kind of free meds around for any reasons. Two they could come in handy for a gag with Sammy or some other weird reason. Third, maybe he's ignoring the "best by" date and thinking they will be useful in 20 years.  Not likely, but, ya never know. 

- Casifer: I think Misha using his own voice helps to make the distinction but in general I think Misha did a great job this episode.  That he went to the bunker and was looking for something is probably important.  Did he leave because he FOUND SOMETHING?  Do we have a spell, McGuffin, or other thing that we don't know about yet?  Seems probable to me.  And he did a good job of playing "Cas" with Dean except he slipped up at the end there.  Cas would not call using Dean as "bait" a good thing. Not now.  The Cas of S5 would, but not the Cas of S11.  Dean may not know WHAT it was that Cas did to make him seem off, but I think that was the key tell.  Finally, it seems to me Casifer really does want to beat Amara or he wouldn't be looking in the MoL bunker for stuff.  What a delight for Lucifer to find out the boys were keeping a treasure trove of ancient information and weapons.   I'm really pumped about where Casifer is going while remaining supremely confident we get Cas back.

- Mildred. Practically Perfect In Every Way.  And I swear, Dean's too emotionally messed up about Amara (Mildred was right) to hit that, but she had a decent shot with him.  Finally, atrial fib is not enough, as far as I know, to make you the most vulnerable person in a retirement center.

- Eileen. Is the actress deaf? If not, she did a fantastic job with portraying the way she should speak.  I liked her being snarky and competent.  We don't need any more "Bela's" (CW model perfect).  I liked Bela's character but she was too cliche (a gorgeous and great thief).  Eileen was perfect as a snarky, hunter with trust issues.  I definitely count her slicing Sam's hand open with a gold blade as the hunter version of "meet cute".

- Banshee: F*cking nightmare.  Well done VFx. And I'm glad we got a new monster.

 

Plot points:

- Dean/Amara: yes, at this point if they DON'T go there, I'll be surprised.  And I'm not bothered by it.  I think Dean has established his 'hero-cred' on this one.  He's tried and failed to kill her twice.  And Amara is not a mustache twirling villain.  She's the scorpion in the "scorpion and the fox" story.  What she's doing is in her nature.  It's a nature that is deadly to all mankind.  I'm hoping Dean, the poster child for Free Will, will end up being the key to saving the universe from the incompatibility that her nature presents.  Which means I anticipate tragedy for BOTH Dean and Amara. I know he doesn't love her (it's not REALLY attraction in the sense of 'want'),  but I think he's got a compassion for her he doesn't understand. he said "attraction" but I think it's a drawing effect, not a "sexy" effect.  I think this can only end in tears but I don't think it's going to reflect poorly on Dean.  At this point he has told a member of Team Free Will (Cas... or so he thought), so he's not completely keeping secrets.  Once he finds out about Casifer, however, he's going to have to fess up to Sammy.

- Another legacy!  This could be nothing or we could get some worldbuilding going.  I'm up for that.

- What was in the MOL Bunker that Casifer found???  It has to be something or he would have hung around.  Really interested in that.

 

Finally... that last freakin' song.  It's DARK people.  Very dark.  And not looking good for Dean.  I'm not remotely worried about Jensen leaving (overreaction to him reading a Deadpool script a couple of years ago).  And I don't think they are focused on wrapping the series.  CW is waiting to see how Legends plays out and what they are going to do with their schedule but I bet they are not telling Supernatural to plan for a wrap-up.

And here's another question: do Angel's have the same rights as humans with regard to consent.  Clearly Cas had to say "yes", but can he also eject the other Angel?  I actually think it will come down to a matter of strength.  And (sorry Aeryn) Luci will again be defeated by the power of love.

If it's any help (again, for Aeryn)... I think that last shot makes it clear who the back half of the season is going to be featured on.  A show-runner once said that you know who the episode is really about based on who has the last "word" (i.e. last scene).  In this case, the coda was VERY long for the episode and it ending on a haunting song featuring a troubled Dean.  This is a "what's wrong with Dean" plot IMO.

Heh, I had just the opposite reaction. I was like NOPE don't dangle that out there because Dean won't get that.  I think it's setting us up to have our hearts ripped out and destroyed because as Kim Manners always said, "Give them what they want in a way they don't expect". 

 

--All the talk of Dean and Sam being together is all Dean ever wanted (Dean has always wanted HIS family together meaning Sammy, Mary and John)

--Sam keeping the retirement brochure

--Sam saying how he can't hunt without his brother

--Dean thinking old age might be a good deal after all

--Dean having Billie tell him that she'll make sure the next time they die, they stay dead.

--Dean apparently pining for something more....

 

I think it's trying to lull us into a false sense of security. I don't trust them at all to actually give the boys a totally happy ending. I think if Dean does get that it's because Sam has died. Or conversely Sam lives in the retirement home because Dean has died.

 

What I do think is that the show and the actors are telling us that the series is coming to an end sooner rather than later. I don't think they will go beyond 13 at most.   

 

And I don't think they are focused on wrapping the series.  CW is waiting to see how Legends plays out and what they are going to do with their schedule but I bet they are not telling Supernatural to plan for a wrap-up

 

I have not heard anything about them reupping for s12 at this point. IMO it's not on the chopping block regardless of how Legends does, which premiered well but I think it will drop off a lot because it wasn't ALL that. 

 

IMO the CW would it end if ratings crash to like a 3 regularly but I can't see that happening ever but IMO it will end when Jensen and Jared call it a day and I think that day is just around the corner.   I thought it was interesting that Jensen mentioned that their children are reaching that age where they really notice the presence and absence of them.  I suspect that will be why they choose to leave the show this season or s12  more than anything else.  Jared talks quite a bit about wanting to just be a Dad for awhile after the show. Maybe that is becoming more imperative than before as the kids get to school age, you know?   Just my thoughts from listening to some things they say in cons and interviews.

I loved this episode. 

 

I was confused by the description, though. What mysterious song? The Banshee call?

 

The description kinda sucked (sorry Suzzanne Gomez, but really honey, do a better job).  Yes, in this case the victims were hearing a Banshee scream -- which is not really a song.  Although a song is part of the Banshee backstory.  The phrase "screaming like a Banshee" usually means just that -- a scream.  And it was only "mysterious" because no one else could hear it.  I wonder if the description was written up based on the title and not really anything else.

 

Speaking of the title, I'm going to play "fun with titles" today.

 

So the title was "Into the Mystic", which is a Van Morrison song.  So, random SPECULATION on use of this title with the episode features. And please note, the episode title is sometimes changed along the way (versus being a driving force for the theme).

First Van Morrisson is from Ireland.  So starting out in Cork, Ireland could be a shout-out. Plus Banshees are mostly an Irish legend.

Second, the song is about ancient forces -- Banshee works.

Third, the song itself is about seeking a spiritual connection.  "Follow your heart" theme.  Which indicates to me, Robbie had the song in mind when he wrote the episode.

And then let's get MORE cryptic.  What exactly IS a Mystic (forgetting the song):

Definition: a person who seeks by contemplation and self-surrender to obtain unity with or absorption into the Deity or the absolute, or who believes in the spiritual apprehension of truths that are beyond the intellect.

 

Mildred was sort of rockin' that self-surrender into spiritual truths. And she was also paired with Dean, and encouraging him to surrender to what he was pining for. Which, is apparently, and strangely, a Deity.

But that could be all coincidence and I'm misinterpreting.

 

catrox, I think the only thing we disagree on is show ending, otherwise everything else you said maid sense to me.

Much better than last week`s crapfest.

 

I was pleasantly surprised that they managed to make the Golden Girls thing charming. Compare this episode with the old lady in the ghost ship episode and the differences are stark. Dee Wallace delivered a strong performance here and her chemistry with Jensen was sweet.

 

The deaf hunter was nice. Though, while it was an asset in this particular hunt not being able to hear, it would otherwise prove very dangerous. Unless she primarily hunts banshees.

 

Also liked Misha`s more toned-down version of Casifer. He was shifty here and there but never so unconvincing as Cas that I didn`t buy Dean not catching on right away. He did notice something was wrong and that is a believable reaction for now.

 

Casifer actually wanting to go after Amara surprises me but then he can`t rule if she is around. Dean just came into his orbit in his plans. I like that, it ties Dean more to the story. Whatever Lucifer is planning, it will not (fully) come into fruition.

 

And since the question of Dean being helpless to Amara is hammered on so much, he should surprise himself in the end. I would say he is way too hard on himself because "I struck out twice"? No you didn`t, that little knife was never a means to kill Amara and you proved  it by using it on her. So far, Dean doesn`t have the means to defeat her, it had nothing to do with their "bond" really. The "tell" of the show is obviously another but they have not shown me what they mean to sell me.

 

She affects Dean and he does her but suddenly they make it sound as if Dean is marching along a street with a blank look in his eyes, intoning "Imhotep...uh, sorry Amara...Amara" but that is more than hyperbolic.

 

I, too, got some strange meta-retirement-vibe from the ep. Guess we`ll see.

Shoshannah Stern is deaf IRL - if you want to see her being snarky and competent on an older show (Bonnie threw some EPIC shade at Mimi for sure), watch Jericho (I believe it's on Netflix).   Loved her and loved Mildred,  can Robbie Thompson write more episodes please?

Based on some comments above, I'm not the only person who wonders where they're going with the introduction of Eileen as 1) a MOL legacy and 2) a competent hunter. Next week, we'll see Claire and Alex at Jody's. Perhaps the show is setting up the next generation of hunters, which will allow Dean and Sam to gracefully retire or at least slow down. Dean can hang out in his dead man's robe at the MOL lair.

So I noticed the date death on the tombstone.  March 18, 2016.  So the show is now 2-ish months ahead of us.  Does that mean it's been almost a year in show since the Darkness was released? Or like 6 months?

I would be astonished if Lucifer doesn't let Cas see/hear everything that's happening. Seems like he'd get off on his little bro hating every moment of what Lucifer is doing. Making Cas dormant would be too kind for Lucifer, IMO.

 

In my opinion, not making Castiel dormant is definitely Lucifer's MO if he can get away with it. He did the same kind of thing when he possessed Sam, letting Sam come to the surface sometimes so they could "talk" and when he wanted Sam to experience something - like slaughtering the demons from Sam's past and beating up on Dean. And it all feeds into Lucifer's ego trip. If he keeps his "host" dormant, he can't gloat and he can't try to make the host secretly "like" what's happening... which in my opinion, is what Lucifer really wants: to have Castiel (or Sam previously) admit that he likes having Lucifer in there. And if that doesn't work, and they still insist they hate it, well then all the better to torment them by letting them see what havoc he is creating while wearing them, and yet they can't do anything about it. It's a win-win for Lucifer.

Loved seeing the green cooler at the grave side. As one of the few constants in their lives, it always makes me happy when it shows up. Also, in the shot of the boys walking away from Mildred and Eileen, I noticed they actually bought Sam some jeans that fit instead of the baggy ones he used to wear. Shallow, but still appreciated. So Dean sleeps with a light on?

But this brings up another question - since Lucifer was in the cage when all of the other angels were falling, what is his status in terms of the "flying around?" Does he still have his wings? And/or have the other angels' wings finally healed now that they have had access to heaven - and its powers - again? I'm guessing that that is likely the case, but if there was a dialogue cue about that somewhere, I missed it.

Since the angels fell when he and Michael were in the Cage IMO it didn't affect them the same way. Lucifer could teleport Sam and Dean into the Cage and kill that other angel with a snap of his fingers so I think he still has his wings.

 

I was wondering as to the whereabouts of Cas' car. Dean shouldn't have been surprised to find Cas in the bunker if he had seen the car either out front on in the garage depending on how he entered the bunker. I hope Lucifer didn't drive and that becomes another cue to Dean that something is wrong.
