Okay, reading that interview, I have some nitpick since I otherwise agree:

* B&B is by no means contemporary, unless being attracted to waffles is a new thing among millenials

* Victor being indisposible is a matter of opinion. But if there is anyone that can bring something new to this character, she and Alden are it.

* As stupid as JillPaternityGate was, I don't want to revisit that. Not even to reverse the stupid out of nowhere relation to Lauren

* there really is no place for Adam. And there is no rush to recast. Arguably, they could have left him dead four years ago or even after the Hightower debacle without losing anything. The baby-go-round is not entertaining and I don't want to see any parent, even Banana Butt, losing another kid anytime soon.

* Does her Victoria comments mean there's a chance for Heather Tom returning? Not because I haven't accepted AH in the role and she is all kinds of capable for the new direction of her character. I'm just really, really looking for any excuse to be rid of Katie Logan onB&B :p

Amazing isn't it? The whole summer all we saw were Philly promos again and again. Their forbidden lust. Someone almost catching them. Revenge plots. Billy Billy Phyllis Phyllis.

Thank god JFP got kicked out on her ASS. JT's Billy is here to stay it seems. But as long as he's out of Phack's orbit IDGAF what he does or with whom.

Jack vs Victor has hamstrung the show.  Victor always wins. I don't want to drive major story with that.  I am ignoring things that seem absurd to me.  Oh, yeah...she has definitely been here.  Hi, Sally!

Even though I'm a little disappointed about Billy being a "stalwart" (more like just a "wart" if you ask me) and the Christian paternity retcon-retcon, I'm excited about this.

This is a writer who cares about storytelling. She explained that Philly was shit because it MADE NO SENSE and trashed both characters. Their hawtness wasn't part of the equation.

But but but ... It was TWU WUV and they have chemistry. Plus Jack is so old. And how dare Sally insult a whole fanbase (ugh the word "fanbase"). And GT and JT SAID it was real love!!!!!

Ah, schadenfreude.

Don't know if it was deliberate but SSM twice referred to reading "the boards" - not Twitter - to gauge viewer reaction.

I totally believe TPTB read messageboard. The actors have admitted they have as well. Philly was panned on damn near ever Y&R I have been on. They had their fans but overall people weren't feeling them and explained why. I know Mal Young was a big fan but it seems that not many others were. It explains the clunky writing for them. They couldn't committ fully even if they liked the chemistry. But now SSM is here and she is like "Noooooope."

THIS. It's about STORY and CHARACTERS. I understand that there are fans who don't care and just want to see X and Y together, making out on a couch, but I'm happy Sally wants to focus on making a show as a whole WORK.

The one thing she said that I'm truly excited about is giving these characters direction, goals, and motivations, starting with Devon.  that's been missing since at least 2010. That's  when everyone stopped working and started just going around town bumping off each other like OLTL circa 2005.

Not that I'm aware of. I don't remember there being anymore retcons since it was established that Jill and Lauren have the same father.

While I have no use for Jill at the moment, I would be disappointed if they retconned her and Lauren being sisters. I've always liked their relationship, despite the fact that it was ridiculous and came out of nowhere. I don't understand what the point would be in undoing it now and I'm not interested in another story about Jill trying to find out who her parents are.

Sally may pique my interest in show. I know a great deal of my disinterest is caused by my mother's passing but as a fan since '74, I 'I've been pissed at the loss of iconic sets ( huge YAAASSS!!! to the Abbott dining room ) and the total lack of attention to history. If Sally can repair the damage done to characters like Sharon or Jack, then I'm all for it!

SSM implied a retcon when she said it was a mistake when Devyawn was made Katherine's grandson and he was then given $2B following her death, which left him without drive. She said she'd like to revisit that. Oddly, she does like GC Buzz, but I think that's more for the reason she admires MMo's Hillary. I think they should move Devyawn out of her orbit. Hillary's more in the same league with Leanna Love as a catalyst for conflict than a leading lady/heroine, though she can clearly carry that too.

This. I like Lauren and Jill as sisters. It might have come out of left field, but it's been this way for years now. I love Jill interacting with Michael as well. It's just nice to see her have family. It seems pointless to revisit it after all these years. Just let it stand.

I like GC Buzz. It has potential but right now it's being used for Jack-Victor and baby swapping shit. 

I am so glad she's not all about Adam. That character was irreparably ruined for me during the Ashley torment days.

I've never understood the Devon hate and I don't think I see it on other soap forums as much as I've seen it on this one (and on TWOP). Not sure what to make of it.

I'm okay with Devon being Katherine's grandson and his being a billionaire. The only part I did have a problem with is that Katherine left most of her fortune to Devon and to her husband, largely at the expense of her other family members. That did not seem to me like something she'd do. Whatever, I like that there's a POC on this show who's independently wealthy and can go toe-to-toe with the Abbotts and Newmans. 

I get that SSM sees what was done with Devon as a mistake for historical reasons. However,  I don't think the way to fix it is to have it all taken away from him. This new routine where Victor threatens Devon every week to sue him into poverty is starting to get on my nerves. Someone among TPTB might want to take a step or two back and consider the negative optics of that.

Now, if they want to bring a new POC who's got Newman and Abbott levels of money, I'd be all for it. However, it takes a long time to establish new characters and I don't see them making that kind of investment. And frankly, IMO, their track record in that area has been fairly poor anyway. Most recent examples: Luca the Spanish Mafia Prince and Marisa who lost most of her "spicy flavor" practically overnight.

He's in the same category, roughly, as Cane and Kevin, for me, but not as bad as ButtBiscuit.  He's certainly not singled out.

For me at least, I noticed his lack of direction and purpose before I'd ever set foot  at TWoP. But for years, he was mostly a supporting character to whatever drama Lily and Cane was having or Neil and whichever black actress they had on that year. Most of the other blah, useless additions to Y&R have been filtered out with each new headrunner--Chelsea "Studio Mandate for Life" Lawson is the sole remaining addition from MAB, for example, none of LML's failtastic creations exist, and the last reminants of JFP's reign will be out the door before New Years--but he's managed to hang on somehow. 

ETA: oh wait...Cane came in in 2004 or so, didn't he? Cuz I remember some story where he was about to marry Amber for a green card after the Foresters rode her ass outta LA for that adorable little BigBear stunt and Colleen was being played by Not-Suresucks then.

okay, so that LML survived the guiolltine. Unfortunately for us.

I dunno...as a black woman, I see that as Victor being Victor. and bullying people into doing things his way. Hasn't he said similar things to Jack and Billy and David Chow and whoever else over the years?

im over Victor steamrolling everyone, in every story ever since Bell died, regardless of color.

My biggest problem with Devon in the past has been what a judgmental priss he was, especially with Daniel. I also hated the way he treated Katherine and Tucker.  While I've mellowed on him recently, I do think he's bland.

I'm sorry but I think she is just horrid. She walks like she's pitching forward, often times when she speaks she sounds like she's taken a sleep aid and is about to doze off.  I'm sure she is a good sport but I don't believe she is a good actress at all. Those fight scenes the other day were embarrassingly bad. Jmo, though. And clearly Sally thinks she's great.

It's a shame that they gave Devon billions and then never did anything with it. He, and to a lesser extent Neil, are the only non-white characters on the show with any type of money and power. As you said, given the track record this show has with POC, I'd rather they invest the time and energy into developing the few of them they already have.  The fact that Devon is practically a blank slate is an advantage since SSA can do whatever she wants with him without having to worry much about character history. There's no reason why he and Hilary can't be turned into integral characters if someone just takes the time to give them personalities and big stories and stop marginalizing them.

I almost typed to ask when he possibly interacted with Daniel, until I remembered his and Lily's brief marriage and they split up over his porn addiction? Or him cheating on Amber who'd done porn to get by for a few months. Something like that.

I've read that she has a few physical problems, including a bad back, which may account for her odd posture and stilted way of walking. The four inch heels probably aren't helping either. I wish she'd go back on the sauce, she at least was funny as Drinki.

I've never like EH as Vicki. Heather Tom was much better in that role. And the way EH looks at people's chests when she's talking to them instead of at their faces makes me nuts. When I speak to someone, I look at his/her face-not at the chest! And if she gets any skinnier, she'll just disappear. Is she ill? I hate this story line with her, Billy and Travis. Travis is 10 times the man that Billy ever thought about being. Well, except having sex with his ex-girlfriend who was married at the time. Ha. I guess I'm just worn out with any story line involving Victoria. Don't get me started with her "forgiving" and sucking up to her vampire, Victor. Yuck.

I don't think Sally implied that she'd disinherit Devon or break his tie to Kay. It seemed more that she didn't like it cause it left the character little room for drive and growth. I gathered she would work within the confines of  where the character is rather than try to create something else. 

 

However, I didn't necessarily appreciate that opinion that devon needed to be poor to have ambition being that every Newman and abbots are born with a silver spoon in their mouths but seem to do just fine story direction wise  for decades until they were ruined. why must devon's writing be any different. I thought that was an odd stance to take and indicative of  what's wrong with daytime writers with respect to AA characters. they don't have to be poor to be written for. but this seems to be the thought.
