7th Annual Musical Anatomy of a Superhero: Film and TV Composer Panel

Music has always been an important supporting character in movies; it goes to another level in the superhero film genre where the music sets a tone that helps define a character, an impending battle, or a triumphant moment. The annual Musical Anatomy of a Superhero returns with a Justice League/Avenger panel of superhero composers of superhero films. Unreleased music and video clips from upcoming and recently released projects will be featured. Leading Hollywood composers will explain the process and challenges of creating music behind the superhero genre, along with collaborating with the director, producers, and the franchise. Composer panelists include Pinar Toprak (Captain Marvel, Krypton), Benjamin Wallfisch (Shazam!, Hellboy), Sherri Chung (Batwoman, Super Girl), Blake Neely (Batwoman, The Flash), Christopher Lennertz (The Boys, Agent Carter), and moderator Michael Giacchino (Spider-Man: Far From Home, Dr. Strange), with introductions by Ray Costa (Costa Communications).

This process will include creating a pitch document, obtaining representation, and getting a pitch meeting. The panelists will explain, through hypothetical examples and humorous stories, the process that new creators should adapt to make their way through the creative battleground of the entertainment industry. Knowing that each project is unique, there will be a Q&A to allow the audience to really hone in on the solutions to obstacles they may encounter. Also on hand will be an entertainment lawyer to give creators insight on protecting their ideas as they navigate Hollywood!

Writing the Rules of Magic

There is more science fiction and fantasy on TV and in the movies than ever before, and while these genres may seem like opportunities for a writer's imagination to run wild, in fact their stories benefit from rules and parameters. These guidelines help ground a writer's fancies and create a recognizable world for the characters. But coming up with the rules of magic and science fiction is more difficult than it seems. These professionals, who have created detailed, grounded worlds, tell how they did it: Deric Hughes (Arrow, The Flash, Warehouse 13), Jose Molina (Magic: The Gathering, The Tick), Julie Benson and Shawna Benson (Wu Assassins, The 100), Sarah Kuhn (Heroine Complex), Gennifer Hutchison (Better Call Saul, The Strain), Chris Dingess (Doom Patrol, Being Human, Manifest Destiny comic), and Kieron Gillen (The Wicked & The Divine, Die). Moderated by TV and comics writer Ben Blacker (DC's Hex Wives, The Thrilling Adventure Hour).

Set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man, Amazon Prime Video's Carnival Row explores how this growing population struggles to coexist with humans—forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom) and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society. This panel features a cast and executive producer discussion, exclusive sneak peeks, and audience Q&A. From Amazon Prime Video and Legendary Television Carnival Row is executive produced by Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Eli Stone), René Echevarria (Star Trek, Teen Wolf, Castle, Medium), Jon Amiel (Outsiders), Orlando Bloom, and Travis Beacham (Pacific Rim, Clash of the Titans). Beacham's A Killing on Carnival Row, on which the project is based, appeared on the very first installment of the Hollywood Blacklist in 2005. After spending time at Slabside, Oliver Queen wanted to give back to the city that he loves. Since everyone knows his true identity, Team Arrow worked alongside SCPD as vigilantes to help protect the city at all costs. The season 7 finale saw them fighting for their lives-both in the present and the future. So, what will the state of Team Arrow look like in the show's eighth and final season? For answers to this and more, hear from the cast and producers at their final Comic-Con appearance, and be among the first to learn what this means for Oliver and the rest of his team. Anyone else just kind of bummed about SDCC?

Me. I'm also bummed about this year's SDCC (because no EBR).

I'm still going to look for news and interviews, primarily for comments about EBR/Felicity and for clues about the ultimate fate of Oliver, Felicity and Diggle. I have some, although a lesser amount of, interest in the future kids. I have zero interest in what happens to E2 Laurel, Rene and Dinah.

It's not even just Arrow. There's literally nothing else I'm interested in for this year SDCC (even Kevin Feige's Marvel panel doesn't really phase me since it'll pretty much just be headlines that we would have gotten in a month anyway). Zachary Levi isn't going, Warner Bros just peaced out, Disney doesn't care because of D23 the next month, etc. It's a pretty puny SDCC this year.

In the EW video above (where other Arrowverse stars said nice things about SA), I like how CL managed to get in a dig about having to switch from a black Canary suit to a white Canary suit...

-- On Arrow ending, CL: "And maybe now that the show's done, I'll get that black costume, I'll get that one back."

KM's absence is just another reason to be bummed about this year's SDCC. Now the only female cast members on the Arrow panel will be KC and JH (I haven't seen any indication that AS is going).

I know the shooting schedules can be tight but to not have a character that important at SDCC, really? Can't arrangements be made? Especially if they are thinking of having a Future Arrow spinoff.

I'd guess the thought process would be that if they film FF then, they can confirm the main cast for SDCC so they can focus on a "celebrating 7 years" angle and it wouldn't be priority to have new regulars there. Plus, the idea that they actually are planning a spin-off is still way up in the air.
