Sky's release strategy for this show is bizarre. They put this episode up On Demand yesterday before it aired, then this morning added Eps 2 & 3, and I just checked and they've added Ep 4 too.

So maybe a general "Season 5" thread would be better, at least until the show airs in the US in two months?

I'm hoping once this airs here in Canada (and the U.S.) that there'll be enough discussion to separate the episodes.  You could keep us posted though if this one is shaping up to be as good as the previous ones - although the second season of Scott and Stonebridge was a little off but still worth watching.  It may have been due to the plot lines and was meant to be as it was but it was a little odd to me.

For anyone who has watched the first new episode, is it up to what we've grown to expect?

Oh no, Richmond!

(But let's be frank, we knew this was going to happen. Both Scott and Stonebridge are proud owners of the "member of doom". The moment Julia started talking about that dinner she was a goner.)

Now I'm kind of worried for Martinez... No, actually I'm worried for Scott. I'm afraind this will all end with him dying (and seeing Richmond again).

Argh. That's all I could say.

Like you, I was expecting it from the very first episode of this season, but I'm still pissed off at the showrunners. You just hadda fridge Julia - it wasn't enough that Kate and Rebecca had to bite it - and I didn't even like those characters. But I really liked Julia.

Dammit. I kept saying, why, Julia? Just bang him and climb off, and go your merry way - why'd you have to make it serious? Remember Rebecca! But, to be honest, you could see that she wanted him from the beginning - she just held out until she saw that he really meant it, that she wouldn't just be a fuck. And then, goodnight. I hate Mae so much right now (and I'm kind of annoyed at the show too - I mean, a Dragon Lady? Come on, you guys).

I too am worried for Scott.

I'll probably write more later, but as for now...

It was a good ending. Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid ending, but one step further. I'm going to miss the boys, but I'll watch their respective new shows.

A nice guest turn by Michael McElhatton (aka Roose Bolton) Seriously HOT! Those eyes!

Disappointed that Damien was back to his old tricks 2 eps after Julia died. Sigh....

Have we ever seen naked Stonebridge? He should have tried it on with Kim.

Yes, when Stonebridge was the subject of some kind of medical experiment (?) or a prisoner in that one shifty experiment place (??), anyway, he was naked and being rolled to a crematoria for disposal when he was able to get up and fight off two or three clothed baddies who really wanted to put him in that fire....  There was a behind-the-scenes extra clip about it too, where PW is talking about the joy of staging a fight while naked....  Anyway, that happened.

Aagh, just watched S5E1 (US here)  - wtf?  Lots of action, but the boys totally got their a**es handed to them several times - must be out of practice.  It doesn't occur to the ambassador to make sure he could get real time updates, and have the bomb disposal squad standing by?

Just watched the first episode for Season 5 here in the States.  All I can say is...."Welcome back boys, I missed you!!'

STRIKE BACK and BANSHEE have been a part of my viewing life and I am going to miss these 2 shows.

Gannicus makes an appearance in episode 3!

Seriously?!  Oh please tell me he is going to have his long hair, bare chest and a loin cloth!!

The bad Brit was on SUITS and he temporarily had Donna hooked until he proved to be a douche.  I did think he was sexy though.

Welcome back!  So glad we now get to see this season.  Sad that it's the last one but at least both guys will be on my tv on a regular basis.

Once again we get to see the guys rising up out of the water.  There really is something cool about that.  The action scenes are amazing once again.

Damn, I wish I knew the final season already aired in the UK.  Now it's a bit too late for some spoilers.

Oh well, c'est la vie.

The second episode of the new season may have been one of the best ever for action:

  • Locke using a bulldozer to attack the corrupt Thai cops while Scott rides shotgun in more ways than one

  • Richmond's fight with the police officer sent to get McQueen's wife.  It was just the right length, not going on forever, but not over in a single punch.  And given their respective sizes, it seemed reasonable that she could be him, especially when weapons, ad-hoc and regular, came into play

  • McQueen, already mortally wounded, using a hand grenade to take Chang Rok,the corrupt police commander, with him

  • Stonebridge & Scott climbing the tower, stealing the hard drives and blowing-up the meth to cover themselves while they parachute off the building.  Bonus points to Scott for texting Benz to pick them up in a tuk tuk afterwards.

If I understand correctly, it was Scott's son's idea to fly to Bangkok to see his dad.  How did his son know where Scott was?  I would have thought his mission, location, etc was secret.

I'm also not sure how I feel about Mei being a secret agent.  I always find those long-term cons implausible (I did see an episode a few years back of 'Who the Bleep Did I Marry' where a woman married someone who turned out to be a Cuban spy, though I think they were only married a year before he went back to Cuba).

Definitely two of my favourite scenes.  I really like all the little throw away lines that pop up periodically - Miley Cyrus mention for one.  Sometimes I don't catch them the first time around which is fine because rewatching is never a hardship ;)   I know I'm now looking for some things I wouldn't have and appreciate more because of some of the behind the scenes videos I've seen.  I know that Philip and Sully were the ones on the side of the building doing their own stunts for the climb which is pretty cool.

So casual the way Micheal reached over and grabbed the grenade from the back of Damian's backpack.

As for the long con, well it's been going on for years especially when the Soviet Union was on our enemy list.  It's amazing that people do it in real life and really a little scary to think someone can follow through on something that long.  I knew what Mei was but that was still shocking to see when she tells him she never loved him and says all the things she does.

Since this season just started airing here in the states I've only seen up to episode 3. How far up in this thread can I go to read about only those episodes or is this thread full of spoilers for the whole season? I think I glanced at something that might have spoiled me for a future episode and I'm hoping to avoid that. If not I'll come back to this board after the show is through.

Yikes, I didn't mean to read the spoiler (or at least highly suggestive comment) about the end-of-series fate of Scott & Stonebridge. Didn't realize this aired earlier elsewhere in the world.

Anyway, I tracked down this forum to kvetch that every.single main character (by which I mean, recurring cast, member of Section 20) killed off in this show is a woman. Am I missing anyone? aside from John Porter who popped off on his Dwarven quest to regain ancestral lands and treasure, I mean.

Edited to add: also whatsisname, Porter's nemesis, who died in the desert as a cover for relocating to the States to fight zombies. But since he also was from Season 0 (as it is numbered here in the U.S. by Cinemax) I don't really count him either.

At least 2 other dudes were KIA.

Maj. Sinclair

Sgt. Baxter

Oh paigow of course you're right! I feel terrible to have forgotten Major Sinclair so completely when I adored that character just as completely when he was part of the show. And poor hapless Baxter who should never have been in the field...

Still, I think the point remains that the dynamic of Strike Back is to be lethal to its women... and the more badass the woman, or the more serious her relationship with one of the male leads, the more surely she is going to die. Richmond should have stayed behind a computer screen and out of love with Scott.

I don't necessarily see this as misogynistic or sexist or whatever, just worth noting. I do like that the women have always fought and commanded shoulder to shoulder with the men.

Link to comment

I tend to disagree that the point of the show is to be lethal to women.  I think the point is to show that anyone can die, anytime.  Of course they aren't going to kill off their two leads, Scott and Stonebridge.  After that, pretty much everyone died, male or female.  I would have liked for Richmond to have survived, but it wasn't in the cards.  I did love Kim Martinez and her no-nonsense attitude.

Given the nature of the show, and given that it's ending, I can understand that a character who's been around from the (US) beginning will be killed off (I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if there were ever a Strike Back movie).  That being said, I wish Richmond could have made it farther into the final season.

The latest episode (Episode 5), in which Scott and Stonebridge infiltrate North Korea and "compromise" the vanadwhatever by blowing it up, seemed so weird to me.  I can't quite put my finger on it.  I wouldn't say they waltzed in, but they're crossing the Russian-North Korean border, then it seems like a few moments later there outside of Pyongyang meeting with MI-6 contact "Mr Park", then they're headed north again.

I going to go out on a limb and predict that Scott & Stonebridge will be out of North Korean custody by the end of the next episode, or by the start of the first one.

I think they used the surprisingly functioning NK rail system....

Friday night the scene with Michael taunting Li-Na was classic and yes funny.   The look on Damien's face was priceless but when he realized what was going on once again we saw what a great team these two are together.   This will be another scene that I will revisit time and again.

Sullivan has really brought the emotion this season.  You could feel the heartbreak and panic when his son was threatened and later shot.

Lord Bolton / Oppenheimer: You can't capture me and save these people...

Hah. I did not pick up on that. Unless you're in Kings Landing the grimy dirt and beards pretty much obscure the faces. So we've had Tywin Lannister, Ser Jorah Mormont and now Roose Bolton as guest stars. Very cool.

I have to say one of the things I love about this show, aside from the obvious bromance between our two guys-so stinkin' adorable, are the locations they use. I'm gonna miss this show terribly.

Thank the Seven someone finally managed to kill Roose Bolton.

Now if we could only get Locke to Westeros.

Not much left of Section 20...maybe they will become mercs in Syria - working for Putin.

So the boys have to kill Gannicus and the bureaucrat that shot Locke...

So sad the series has ended.  Overall I liked the ending and how it ended, but, I would have liked to seen how they got out of the barn and back onto American soil.  I also would have liked to see the end of that disgusting politician.  Of course it may be nicer to have look over his shoulder for a while, but in the end I'd have liked to have watched him get what was due.

The boys on their way to Vegas.  Guess Michael found his new job didn't he?  Will have to rewatch to see if there's any mention of N.Y. too?  I can't take credit for noticing this as I read it someplace else.

Of course Scott got one more screw in no matter that he was half dead.

Hah! My thoughts exactly. Much as I like my sexy fun time scenes with him I had to roll my eyes at this. Half dead recovering from that gunshot wound and still mourning Julia. I actually could've gone without this one.

I am glad they got a happy ending and I shall miss them terribly. Thank you show!

The last season's DVDs are out.  There are some behind the scenes things from this season which makes me happy, but it would have been even better to have the behind the scenes' stuff from the previous seasons as well.

Re-watching I have to say I do like how things ended.  It was a good ending especially if nothing else is ever filmed.

I don't understand why they canceled the previous version, and then reboot just a couple of years later. Surely it can't be because of costs?

It was probably a contract thing. Cancelling it released all the writers and actors from being obligated to the show and allowed them to pursue other projects. Bringing it back means that they can start over with a whole new crop of writers and actors.

Link to comment

Costs, contracts, and by the end the infrastructure (people and assets) had pretty much all (literally) died.

I owe myself a binge/rewatch, so next time I get a free preview Cinemax (possibly the end of this month) I'm watching Origins, then the next three series free on Amazon Prime, and then either the last series will be free there or I'll catch it on the next free preview.  I'm still surprised that I actually like this military porn, but what can you do?

Link to comment

I thought this show was really most sincerely dead. While I will miss the original boys terribly, their chemistry and bromance was top notch, maybe we'll get lucky and have another good mix of casting. Fingers crossed.
