They really needed RO for the Duggar discussion. Whoopi made a mess of it, as usual. I am so disappointed that she's been signed for another year. I can't help but think the director left because of that decision.

She has a BA from Berkeley in Mass Communications and a master's from Northwestern's school of journalism.   She has written three novels.  She has been (supposedly) and is a consultant on media communications.  One would think she'd need only to see the written word to know how to pronounce it.  If not, hearing it once or twice should suffice.  Not Our Little Cackles!  She's so cute and helpless...let's just give her the benefit of the doubt.

Wow -   I can't stand stupid women having good jobs on television.   But what really makes my blood boil is when SMART women pretend to be stupid on TV.  Nicole is obviously somewhat intelligent, she is educated beyond anyone else on the panel - why is she playing the dumb blonde?

Because she works in fields (showbiz/politics) run by men whose egos need constant stroking and who are more comfortable feeling superior to their employees?

I think it's because she knows Whoopi has to be the smartest person in the room at all times.

And, regardless of what anyone thinks of republicans or George W., you don't get the jobs in politics that Nicolle has had if your dumb. Unless you're related to someone or donated a shit load of money to the party.

I have worked for many high level people in state government who were NOT smart at all.  There was political patronage, religious (here in the Phoenix area) patronage, sexual patronage.  The workers kept on doing their jobs no matter what "leaders" were changed-interchanged-exchanged.  The cream rises to the top only in milk.

Because she buys in to the stereotypical role of the supportive (never leading) Republican stand-by-your-man mentality (a.k.a. Bitsy Hasselbeck, Ann Romney, Pat Nixon, and - yes - Michelle Duggar) and doesn't dare to be or appear smarter than?

I don't know, I've occasionally seen Nicole on other shows*  and she doesn't shriek or act dumb.   I don't think she is dumb at all - or any dumber than anyone else in the Bush Administration, lol.   Nicole's politics are not my politics but that doesn't make her an idiot.

But I do think she thinks that's what's expected of her on this show.   I wonder if acting the way she does about pop culture might be something she does to separate herself from it???   The other co-hosts seem to defer to her for All Things Political so maybe that's her way of deferring to them?

*I'm not a regular viewer of her Morning Joe gig but I've seen her on Rachel Maddow's show a few times, Bill Maher, This Week with George Stephanopolous etc.

I believe Nic-hole knows how to read people & she's totally got The Whoopster's number.  Just fawn all over her, make her believe you (& everyone else) think she's the best thing since fried rice & play stupid to garner attention & you win.  So it's a win/win for everyone (except us).

I think Nicolle thinks that by acting "dumb" about certain events and people that she will appeal to the "common people". She doesn't want to give the impression that she's smart, because maybe those people won't relate to her. She has taken on this role to play in the panel. It's not a wise move, because most of the viewing public is probably seeing through this feigned ignorance.  The other alternative is that she is genuinely out of the loop on many subjects. ( Of course, she is a huge fan of Pitbull and has his music on Pandora, so that gives her some hipness, har, har...I doubt that she had ever listened to him before he came on the show that day. She says she's a huge fan of almost every guest!)

I missed the talk today, Medicinecrow, can you post the discussion on here? I would love to see it....I liked how the Whoopster called out the Duggar family...She was right in the way that they are using the Christian card to elicit sympathy from the public, when they have shown hatred and intolerance towards gay people and transgender people....I am pretty sure with 19 children that there are bound to be some that are LGBT, who are suffering in silence. Hopefully, the family will disappear from TV forever...My heart goes out to the victims, I am pretty sure that these girls were told to forget what happened to them and to move on.. I wonder what other disgusting things have been covered up by that family... The Bible does say do not judge, for thou shalt be judge in return..They have had  no problems judging LGBT people, fanning the flames of hatred and intolerance in an intolerant world.. Now it is there turn to be skewered......

You can go on CBS's site and watch it. They upload their episodes pretty quick.

Nichole is not dumb..... but she plays dumb quite well..... spend a day or 2 watching Faux News... most of the women act dumb even though they are quite intelligent. I don't know why they do it.... but they do play act. I see it once in a while on CNN... but hardly ever on MSNBC.... maybe it is a Right wing thing.... honestly I don't know... I don't find dumb women attractive.... especially when they are play acting.

MSNBC, SEE: Mika B on Morning Joe.

I don't get it either, it grates when the weekend crew are on CNN especially, I want to put sporks in my eyes and ears with Poppy Harlow.  ARGH.

You beat me to it Medicine Crow! My thought exactly.

Ok. No throwing stuff, but from what I've seen, I like Raven on the panel. *ducks*  She's concise, articulate, usually accurate, doesn't interrupt, and has an unpredictable point of view. Heck, I even like to see her unusual yet stylish clothes/hair (unlike Whoop's sloppy mess). She makes it interesting. Yes, she's a highly opinionated youngish whippersnapper know-it-all, but I like the way she expresses her views (unlike Whoop's halting make-it-up-as-I-go delivery).

Two things -  Brian Wilson does not need to do these appearances.  He is obviously in poor health and not up to the task.  I found it painful to listen to him.

Whoopi has said, at least twice, that she ALWAYS wears a crisp white shirt - she doesn't feel dressed without a white shirt.  Every day, a white shirt.  She has a closet full of crisply ironed white shirts, so she always has one ready.    the only time she is NOT in a crisp white shirt is when she has dripped or spilled something on it before the show and has to make a quick change.

So, obviously, based on what I've seen  - she spills a LOT.

Nicolle could learn a few lessons from the Fox lady who was on today. Although she is on Fox News, she was eloquent and explained her viewpoint very well. I'm glad that Joy was there to get a few zingers in though. ( George Bush's favorability rating at 52%, Joy said that it must be amnesia!)

That Brian Wilson interview seemed really off and weird to me.  Most of the time I didn't really know what they were talking about and he seemed out of it.  Is he seriously ill?  Maybe on some kind of heavy meds?

I was very surprised to see Brian Wilson on the show.  He has had serious mental health issues for decades and probably gets out of the house only because of good medical management.   This was the wrong venue.  He needs to be in a quiet one-on-one interview situation that's taped...not live--definitely not with a raucous studio audience.  I've read good things about the movie...especially Paul Dano.

I just can't stand it when Nic-hole pulls her "I've got goosbumps" B.S.

AMEN!!!    And she has been so "comforting" to Whoopi lately.  She is rubbing Whoopi's back too often; it's creepy.  Nicolle will go FAR in showbiz!

I agree with all of this, SunFun.  I'd like to see her as a regular.  I don't mind (yet) about her intellectual/educational shortcomings.  She's the best to try out so far.  I like the model too--I guess if I like her I should remember her name.  She brings some spunk to the table and she seems comfortable around a microphone and a stage.

OMG. I gagged when Raven took a drink from the glass of salt water , spit it back in the glass and handed it to the model and she drank from it. Raven was amused. I was not.

FTR,I think Whoopi probably does have a closet at her house with lovely crisp white shirts. But we have seen her with that one white shirt that has a hole in it that she says is her favorite and she can't buy it anymore, so she wears that one repeatedly. To me she has hoarding tendencies. I had a coworker (hoarder) who dressed like a bag lady. So much so that people once took up a collection for her at work. She had beautiful clothes at home.

I'm inclined to give Whoopie a pass. She has her idiosynchrocies and comedic standards ( "don't text me, I do not care"' boob lines, fart lines, and forgein accents) as many other performers do. It doesn't bother me. Yes she' s said she only wears white shirts - I don't take her 100% literally. She does seem to wear expensive loosely fitting white shirts 80% of the time. I happened watched a taped episode of The Chew today (i,ve been taping that show regularly for over a year instead of The View) and she was on it. She was fine on it, looks to be friends with Mario, and mentioned she doesn't like eggs and wears white shirts or sometimes black ones. She seemed more comfortable as a guest than as a show moderator. She also announced she's got a line of socks coming out.

I watched the show Roth Brian Wilson - painful to see him. Loved seeing Joy on the panel.

As Former Nun said, he was seriously mentally ill for a long time, addicted to drugs, and under the "care" of a megalomaniacal person posing as his shrink.  He started out as a very fragile personality, and life just piled on. Many/most people gave up on him, and to be honest, I'm stunned that he's the one of the three Wilson brothers who's survived.  (I did the research on a book about the Beach Boys a long time ago, and let's just say that he was used and abused by people who really should have had his back.)

He's in a better place mentally now, and making music again, but the body sure does remember what's been done to it and has its revenge.  I am fairly sure he doesn't do gigs he doesn't feel like doing these days, but I agree that The View was not a good venue for him.  I can see him wanting to promote the movie about his life, but a one-on-one interview, in a quiet environment, would be kinder to both him and those who want to hear what he has to say.  I'm thinking Dick Cavett in his prime, or Charlie Rose (the interviewer, not Whoopi's great-granddaughter.  Although GGD Charlie Rose may do a better job than the current panel.)

He means a lot to a lot of people in the industry who saw what he went through to get to where he is, and that may be why Whoopi got emotional.  Most people wrote him off decades ago.

I just saw an ad on TV for Brian Wilson's concert at a midsize casino here in Oregon next month. I was kind of shocked that he would be able to do that, then I saw that he has a whole bunch of tour dates this summer in different cities and then goes to the UK for concerts in September. I hope they take good care of him with all of that traveling. He looked in bad shape, but maybe he has more stamina than we know.

Although its not a popular opinion, I agree.  Its always been pretty obvious to me that the Whoopi we see on The View is part real, but mostly an act.  She has been in the industry for a long time and she knows what the producers and ABC brass want.  I don't think the mgmt cares one bit about her "don't tweet me" rants. They don't care about her nontraditional attire.  They don't care about her teleprompter reading.  This is not Face The Nation or PBS NewsHour.  It's a mass audience entertainment show, filled with 25-28 minutes of commercials.  It's not designed to educate anyone.  If that inadvertently were to happen, all the better.

Whoopi still has star power among the general public.  She is arguably one of the most famous women in the USA.  She may have whackadoodle views on some things, she may get easily confused about seemingly obvious matters, and she may be the world's worst choice as a moderator, yet she still has Star Power and every single day, that audience goes bonkers not for The Republican, nor Raven-S, nor dear sweet timid Rosie.  They go bonkers for Whoopi.  There is no pre-show warm-up act that could fake that adoration day in and day out.

It is what it is.

Yeah, well, I don't ever recall the audience going "Whoopi! Whoopi! Whoopi!" Like they did for Rosie O'Donnell. That showed me that the audience were bonkers (to use SanDiegoinExile's word) for Rosie much more than Whoopi. Now, granted, I haven't watched a show since Rosie left, so I'm not sure if that changed. The audience chanting Whoopi's name to show their loooove.

True, the audience gets prompted so we hear both spontaneous and prompted laughter and responses. On shows I have seen, whoopie's boob and fart jokes always get some laughter. On The Chew, when she said "don't tweet me, but I hate eggs!" She got laughter. She followed up with something along the lines of I

don't like eggs, but I love chicken farmers and people who grow things. It's important to know where our food comes from. That got big applause.

Whoopie likes to speak with authority about alot of things that she  is ignorant about; and she  lacks humility and grace. I was a fan of hers before she got this gig as a moderator. I did not like how she treated Rosie and it left a bad taste in my mouth. She was always contrarian with her just because she disliked her..I never saw her treat Elizabeth and Sherry in the same manner and they were worthy of contempt and derision....Rosie intimidated Whoopie because she is knowledgeable about alot of things without coming off pedantic and condescending. Whoopie's bathroom jokes and boob jokes are played out....

Whoopie feels her status as a movie stah gives her the right to do whatever the hell she wants and she feels that same right is extended to celebrities on her level. Notice how she came down hard on the Duggar family, because they are reality stars, therefore they are at the bottom of the food chain. Had it been an A-lister mired in the same type of scandal, she would have said her old mantra, we don't know, we were not there..She defended Roman Polanski, Bill Cosby, Mel Gibson and a host of other celebrities who have done despicable acts..That is why I don't care about Whoopie Goldberg and her views on life....I miss Joy, Lisa ling, Meredith, Rosie and even Star Jones. I did not always agree with them, but they always had intelligent things to say that were thought-provoking about life.

When Whoopi was gone the crowd still went "bonkers' .... Whoopi has been riding the coattails of her past movies for quite a while..... how long can you be celebrated for a 20 year old movie.?? I have said it before and just might again.... but Whoopi has been in some very good movies..... but none of the movies were good because of Whoopi's acting ability..... She was in good movies with good actors... she was just another ride along

I agree, Apprentice79, and wonder if viewers are in a coma--or maybe just don't care.  I've commented on various TV people to a friend of mine (much sweeter than I am "in public"), and she didn't see anything negative.  At first.  Now and then she'll tell me she knows what I mean.  Wouldn't it be nice to be naive and sweet?

Did her daughter's plan for a reality show fail?  Whoopi was a bit supportive of the genre for a short time.

I love the Beach Boys and their music was a huge part of my youth, but, I didn't understand why Whoopie was so emotional. Anyone?

Maybe she has some sympathy for his mental state? From what I read, Brian Wilson had a psychotic break after taking LSD in the 60's, was diagnosed with schizophrenia,  and has never been the same, still having flashbacks and hallucinations.

Whoopi might have been having a "There, but for the grace of god"  moment.

Hey, RogerFromOhio, I love your posts and almost always agree with you, but on this...we diverge...to wit

I point you to her role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent when she played a foster mother out of your nightmares.  She was brilliant, absolutely riveting in the role.  Her final scene still makes me shiver.  The only other guest 'bad guy' that had the same effect on me was Neil Patrick Harris.

Then I would ask you to consider her comedic role on The Middle as Sue's guidance counselor.  Lovely job.

Admittedly I have not seen most of her film roles - I don't count Ghost as I hated that movie with a passion and discount pretty much everything and everyone involved with it.

Still love your insights!

I was a huge fan of Whoopi's and even tolerated her when she made some bonkers comments about "rape, rape" and the Vick situation.  I have no idea, but my impression is that Whoopi doesn't put her money where her perceived mouth is.  She is tapped for appearing in PSAs and such, but I don't think she spends a lot of cold hard cash for causes.  Rosie O'Donnell on the other hand...  I will never understand why someone that I perceive as having such a close mind-set had to go all alpha-dog on another.  It's a god damned shame.

My favorite Whoopi role will always be Clara's Heart, ironically since she starred with Neil Patrick Harris.  I loved her in Jumpin' Jack Flash too, I'll have to seek out the Law & Order episode, sounds transfixing.

I loved the honesty Molly Sims showed when she was calling bullshit on Elle's "I don't care what I look like" schtick.  Something we don't see a lot of on this show.
