A female lead doesn't equal THE lead being a female. The gender of the main character matters a lot, it always has. And a co-lead isn't nearly the same. Sure, Leia mattered, but the original thrilogy was Luke's story - while Episodes 7-9 shape to be Rey's, and Rogue One shape to be Jan's (Jyn's? I'm pretty sure her name is similar/the same to Kyle Katharn's GF in Jedi Knight games, she was a smuggler, BTW)

I haven't seen any of these star wars films, but hasn't there always been a female lead in all these films? I guess the only different is that instead of following Luke's journey or Anakin falls they are just following Rey and whoever Felicity's character is but those two are still sharing the lead (co-lead as you will) with a male or two male characters.

There's the outright lead and the secondary lead. The women in the original and prequel trilogies were secondary leads. In these new ones, they're the outright leads.

Kyle Katarn's main squeeze was Jan Ors. It's close.

That's not entirely a denial, just a comment on them both being white and brunette is a leap (just like I think the people who say Carrie Fisher, Natalie Portman and Daisy look sooooo much alike are reaching. They're 3 pretty white women with brown hair...).

There's definitely a resemblance between Ridley and Portman.

Abrams and co. have not exactly been subtle in not wanting anything to do with the prequels.

Which frustrates me a bit. There were plenty of decent ideas in the prequels that just got messed up in execution. imo. There's no reason they can't still take ideas/names/places from the prequels like they did with the EU.

anyway, like someone said it doesn't seem very Star Wars-y, and the "I rebel" line is silly but it looks decent.

I think it's a good idea if you're going to make anthology movies that are in a different style and tone to start with a story that's going to use a lot of familiar iconography from the main movies. The criticism of TFA is it used familiar story, archetypes and style along with the iconography.

Daisy Ridley and Keira Knightley to me, hardly have ANY differences in their faces, to the point where it's eerie.  It's extremely, extremely eerie how much they look alike in my opinion.  So yeah, there's resemblance among all three (Portman/Ridley/Knightley) , I'd say.  Carrie Fisher, however, I don't know.

No, it is not supposed to read Felicity Jones.

I was referring to this point:

There's definitely a resemblance between Ridley and Portman.

1. Keira was Natalie Portman's "body double" as you say in Star Wars 1. So it would follow that a lot of people believe that Natalie Portman and Keira look alike.

2. I myself think that Daisy looks so much like Keira that it's eerie, so yeah, I guess I would agree with the above point , that Daisy Ridley and Natalie Portman look alike.

From EW.Com

This Week's Cover:Inside the Star Wars stand-alone Rogue One

From Birth. Movies. Death:

Forest Whitaker Is Playing A Cartoon Character In ROGUE ONE

I'm happy about this. The Clone Wars arc that Whitaker's character Saw Gererra was in is one of the best storylines of the series. It delved into the nuance and complexity of the Clone Wars conflict that the live action movies didn't go into. The discussion between Obi-Wan and Anakin on what the difference between a freedom fighter vs a terrorist was great.

I love the Clone Wars so I'm very excited about this information.  That particular storyline was a great one and I remember at the time, years before the Disney sale and the new movies, that it was considered an early look at what would become the Rebel Alliance.  So adapting the Saw Gererra character to live action was a good and logical move.

So there's going to be a young, up-and-coming Darth Vader?

He's going to be proactive and totally in your face! Plus I think they'll Rasta-fy him by about 10%.

Seriously, this is just before A New Hope, so not that young.

I'll definitely avoid a Han Solo cameo.  Han shouldn't be part of the Rebellion or the Galactic Civil War at all before ANH.

Though I hope they keep Han's past from the old books in the new movie.  Just in case they actually do retain it, I'll put it under spoiler locks

Spoiler

Han was a former Imperial officer who got thrown out of the service for rescuing Chewie from slavery.  This was long-established in the old EU and I always thought the idea of Han being a former Imperial officer was fascinating.  To me, that's too good a storyline to pass up.

Seems to be the reshoots at work. Test audiences didn't like the first cut so they changed things. Note Forest character was unnamed in the trailer and bald. Now he has hair so perhaps the character in the first cut had a different name and they decided to change the character.

I am in love. If the movie is put together with care like that^ was, it's going to be right up there with Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens.

Seriously, some of those shots were gorgeous! And I'm even more intrigued. I know the story is straight forward, but I can't wait to watch the journey on how they get there.

I would totally be that guy laughing in the X-Wing. So cool, I'm jealous of everyone who gets to help bring any of the Star Wars movies to life.

I bet I know what he's thinking. "Oh my god, I'm in an X-Wing! Can I say it? Can I say it? I have to say it! I'm gonna say it! Lock S-Foils in attack position! Cut the chatter, Red Two! Yes!" That's what would be going through my head.

I watched the special preview that aired last night during the ABC Star Wars Special.  This movie looks great, i can't wait for it to come out.

Is that different to the behind the scenes look we got yesterday?

What would be going through my head is "We're going in, we're going in full throttle.  That ought to keep those fighters off our back."

Okay. There was an actual trailer at Celebration, but it hasn't been released online. I was thinking the one in the special was it, but no such luck. I have to be away from the net for a few days, that's when they will release it. Sometime in the next four days, I bet.

I don't really follow much of the Star Wars universe other than the 7 films so I don't know what's "canon" or not. This looks really well shot, so it's down to the script really. I hope it's good, and not the movie equivalent of a really attractive person you find out has a horrible personalty six weeks into the relationship...

"Can you be trusted without your shackles?" is such a bullshit question. If she can, she would say yes. If she can't, then she's going to say yes just to cause more trouble. I would say no, just to be contrary.

Also, Star Wars is starting to get a bit James Bond, with filming in the Maldives. Travel to exotic locations around the world, show off their beauty, then blow some shit up. I mean that in a complimentary way. No matter how bad a James Bond movie is, at least there's some scenery porn before the action scenes.

Liked it but especially got a charge when Vader was shown in the very end.

I cannot wait to see this movie. So glad that Kathleen Kennedy is in charge now because the stories are deeper and more diverse than ever.

They were deep and diverse in the CG Clone Wars when George Lucas was in charge(and he was involved in that). Forest Whitaker's character being first introduced there.

I'm more and more intrigued after each trailer.  I agree that Gareth Edwards really seems to be great with scale.  He just makes all of the Imperial's ships, AT-ATs, and the freaking Death Star, look so massive and intimating, and really shows how much of a disadvantage the Rebellion is at, and is making me looking forward to how they pull it off, and at what cost.

Intrigued at the glimpses of the cast and characters, although unless I missed him, I don't think I saw Mads Mikkelson, and I'm really curious to see what his involvement will be.

This looks really good. I get a very Dirty Dozen/Magnificent Seven vibe from the trailer, introducing the various characters rather than trying to establish much plot or big set pieces. And that would be a really good way to go: a ragtag group of misfits sacrificing themselves for a good cause, against an enemy that is overpowering.

This movie could easily end up being darker than Empire, which would be a nice refutation of the arguments of the anti-Disney whiners.

Between the great actors, the great characters (old and new), the great effects (CGI & practical) and the great trailers, if Disney wants to, they can just take my money now because I don't think I can wait until December.

After my disappointment with The Force Awakens, I'm actually been looking forward to this.  And that was before I saw Darth Vader at the end.

And we get to see Alan Tudyk play a 7 foot tall droid, so even better

Oooohhh a little bit of extra info in that one, kind of gave away an important piece of the puzzle.  I think so anyway.

So I've watched the trailers a few times now and, i have a question.  The scene with the Blind Force User and the Stormtroopers, is he really taking them out with his staff or is it cleverly edited? I ask because at least once we see blaster fire so I'm wondering if he's moving around/ pushing them around so the Troopers end up taking each other out?

Looks like Disney isn't going to repeat some of their mistakes they did with The Force Awakens initial merchandise, and have already revealed that they've got ton of Jyn Erso toys and action figures coming out.

With some of the Rey toys I can understand Disney not releasing them right away, they couldn't give away that she would wield the Skywalker lightsaber, and be the main character months before the movie was released.  The only thing with Jyn is if she's Rey's mother, but they can leave that off the blurbs on packages.

I really hope this isn't the case.  While I really enjoyed parts of what's been rebranded as Star Wars Legends (especially the Thrawn stuff), one of the big problems with it was how ridiculously fan-service-y it was, and how small that ended up making the GFFA seem.  Making her Rey's mother is a straight-up Kevin J Anderson move, and that's not something they need to emulate.  Also, if this is supposed a story from somewhere else in the universe, make it completely its own thing.

As far as the action figures, at least they learned after two other tries.
