Hallmark Movies: Small Town Royalty Magically Celebrating Rekindled Love! - General Discussion

I’m sure this is all due to the wild excitement I helped generate with last year’s Falling for Football trailer 🤣

“Kansas City Chiefs and Hallmark are teaming up with the NFL and Skydance Sports for a new, original movie, “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” starring Tyler Hynes, Hunter King and Ed Begley Jr. The movie begins production next month and will film entirely in Kansas City.”

Kansas City in July: bleahhhhhhhhh (and I’m from there, so experience speaking).

But.

July is training camp (in St Joseph, MO, about an hour from downtown KC), so that means the team (and their Super Bowl jewelry) *could make a few cameo appearances.

I feel a trip home coming on…

It has gotten to the point that I don't watch many of their movies made after 2022.  There were some in 2023 that were fun. Maybe.

It isn't the writing and production that are so much worse than before. The newer actors are okay; it is just that for the most part they cannot sell the writing and plots like many of the ones that left the network. I don't know why (maybe this is just a "me" issue). 😍

Not just you.  I don't remember the last time I watched a whole movie all the way through.  Likely not anything since Christmas, and even then, it was a weak season.

I think I've aged out, honestly.  I only really watched for the handsome men, but the ones on now are younger than my son, which is too young for me, and even the few old-school Hallmark boyfriends (Paul Campbell, Andrew Walker) are putting out duds.  Having said that, I didn't hate the 'Paul Campbell as a writer who hates Christmas' movie, but I didn't like the Andrew Walker movie about the private pilot stranded on his island.

Actually I am (or a while past) the age of the original Hallmark's Housefrau target audience.

When the first Hallmark Hall of Fame movies were introduced in 1951, only 1 in 4 married women held jobs.  Hallmark created those events to encourage the family to gather around the TV for an evening of sentimental but well-written entertainment.

Over the years, the business model morphed to quantity over quality but they also failed to acknowledge that the Housefraus had a completely different lifestyle.  Not that the original Hausfraus lacked intelligence but they were not quite as world wise as women of today.  Unfortunately Hallmark continues to dumb down all of their stories for an audience that no longer exists.

Honestly, it's time to let go.  I would love to see a study of the demographics of today's viewers. I bet dollars to donuts that Gen Z has no interest in the boring, repetitive stories.  Heck, you can't find an actual Hallmark store anymore, at least in Michigan; I think there are only three in the whole state!

If you mean Hallmark Stores, I live near Grand Rapids and there are 13 stores within 50 miles of me; 3 within less than 5 miles.  They are usually fairly busy.  But the floor space dedicated to cards keeps getting smaller.   I think of them more as gift shops than card stores.

Wow, the closest one to me is over an hour away.  I need to mail order an ornament.

Very few of the newer actors appeal to me but the stable is aging.  It’s time to stop playing the “this is my first real relationship” nonsense.

examples of ages - victor Webster 51, Andrew Walker & Paul Campbell 45, Wes Brown & Brendan Penny 42, Brennan Elliot 49, Kavan Smith 54

lacey Chabert, Brook D’Orsay 42, Julie Gonzalo 43, Jen Lilley & Taylor Cole 40, Rachel Lee Cook & Pascale Hutton 45

these are all per IMDB.  No birth years listed for Erin Krakow, Kris Polaha, Ben Ayres, or Kevin McGarry.

Wikipedi has Ms Krakow turning 40 in September (and she went to Juilliard? huh), and McGarry turning 39 last March.  Polaha and Ayres are 47 per Wikipedia. And my personal fave Bethany Joy Lenz is 43.   So yeah, it's like they put no thought into creating a system to keep things going.

(Sorry, just an obsessed  completionist.)

I’m a glutton for punishment.

Now watching Falling Like Snowflakes. This first aired on Saturday so not only do they play the Christmas movies earlier and earlier, but now Christmas in July starts in June? Lord.. (I’m assuming we’re in Christmas in July. Not sure why else this aired.)

I’ll update with my thoughts when I get more into it.

We’re chasing a rare snowflake… Guess it’s different than another food movie.

I flicked it on while channel surfing, saw them standing outside with a clear blue sky and shadows but snow falling around them.  Hit the Next button right away.

Hallmark hasn't done a great job of finding younger, half decent actors to fill their bench. I'm positive some of these unknown leads are family members or their kid's babysitter, they are that bad. So, my list of 35-and under actresses I would at least try to watch in a Hallmark movie. This includes actresses who have been supporting cast in other movies:

Heather Hemmens
Hunter King
Rhiannon Fish
Lily Gao
Brittany Bristow
Shannon Chan-Kent
Kim Matula
Emily Tennant
Kyana Teresa
Krystal Joy Brown
Mallory Jansen
Stephanie Sy (I can't find her age so I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt)

As I finished, I realized this is a very short list. Maybe they need better casting agents - decent actors could at least maybe do something with a boring script. And honestly, I can forgive a lot of bad story if the leads are good and have chemistry. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Maybe they could just write stories about people who are over 40?  My hunch is their audience skews over 40, so why not play to it?

You can be over 40 and move back to your hometown and buy a diner and rekindle a relationship with your old boyfriend.  The only difference is you are more likely to be divorced (gasp) and have surly teenaged kids who don’t immediately love their new potential stepparent.  And it would make more sense for a 70-something parent to need your help to run the diner (farm, orchard, etc.) than a healthy, vibrant mid-50’s parent.

Maybe I am wrong and Hallmark is raking in the under 30 audience?

Hallmark would have to tweak their formula a bit. You can't really sell a wide-eyed 40-something so characters would need to be written more maturely. I finally watched Savoring Paris all the way through and even though the clichés were wild, I enjoyed the maturity Bethany Joy's character and The Cad character (I'm too lazy to look up the character names) after they cleared up the language misunderstanding and she invited him and his new girlfriend to the opening night party. I also liked seeing a bit into their future at the end, with the time passing outside their shops.

And, it would be okay for the leads to kiss more than once during the story and not just at the end of the movie. Also, they need to screen test the leads better. They've had an inordinate amount of anti-chemistry leads in this last year. I'm not asking for onscreen sex but I'd like to be able to picture it happening and if I'm bored or, worse, actively shuddering with revulsion, then they have failed.

As I made the list in my previous post, I realized they have a lot more capable late 30s, 40-and up actresses that I like, that they could be using if they leaned into the more mature storytelling. I won't lie, I usually just want the guy love interest to be hot and/or not bore me. I'm qualifying because there have been lead actors I found sexy in an unconventional way, like the guys from My Norwegian Holiday (he was funny and charming and that forest run he did was swoon-y) and Merry Scottish Christmas and Branching Out (the accents and, sigh, the accents 🥰). I just need that chemistry to be there.

Starting Christmas movies so early results in more movies needing to be made. By Christmas (actually, sometimes Thanksgiving) viewers are fatigued by them. Less movies could mean the ones that are produced are better quality. I am not talking Emmy-winning; just movies that are fun to watch. And that viewers don't mind watching again. And more "mature" leads means characters who are not so wide-eyed, never-married-engaged-types. Sometimes widows/widowers are allowed. 😁

Example. Last night I rewatched a sort-of-silly-premise Christmas movie about producing a scavenger hunt.  Mallory Jensen (I think) and Tyler Hynes.  It was fun, bouncy, "big city" located, the usual misunderstanding at the end.  But the two leads sold it.

Badsamaritan is spot-on with her observations. "Couples" who mesh are the key. Also, "mature" doesn't mean old.   Nothing wrong with the leads having sex appeal. And an acknowledgement that couples aren't teens. A peck or quick embrace at the end is kind of insulting.

Agree with @Badsamaritan and @Kemper

Essentially Hallmark needs to ditch their old, tired playbook and catch up with the times.  Acknowledge that their stable of actors are no longer ingenues and write realistic scripts accordingly.  It doesn't have to be lascivious but mature, intelligent people are not conservative Muslims that forbid touching until married. The "kiss in the last five minutes" puritanical trope is unrealistic and, frankly, insulting.

There are some couples that play so well off of each other (my favorite couple being Bethany Joy and Tyler in An Unexpected Christmas) so write good solid scripts for them and stop picking names out of a hat and hoping there is a whiff of chemistry to prop up the boring, poorly written scripts.

Heck, I bet a bunch of students in a screen writing class could come up with something if not bound by Hallmark's ridiculous, "must-have in every movie" tropes.

I always wondered why Hallmark didn't establish some kind of 'budding writers' division for folks trying to break into the romance novel genre. You can't throw a cat without hitting a new romance book, and Hallmark is the romance channel. You get a writer with a solid story and the movie is popular, then a follow-up book is written with a good 'what happened next' premise via a partnership with one of the genre publishers. If the continuation proves to be a solid seller, then Hallmark makes a sequel for the channel based on the book and everybody cashes in. I would have absolutely, unequivocally loved Haul Out the Holly 2 if they had ditched the irritating and tiresome Johnsons and just made the neighborhood fight be between Pam and Ned (Ned is in his feelings about Pamela winning the cookie contest again) with the neighborhood taking sides and threatening to ruin Jared's big proposal surprise. They've made books into movies before. It seems like a no-brainer to try it the other way. Hell, if nothing else, they could peruse some fan forums for ideas if they're that empty creatively.

They have a lot of actors who are chemistry magnets and I like when they switch them up, they should do that more. They've tapped into the soap world too, they need to keep looking there as well, if they need to backfill their openings. Stop letting the VP's old nanny/future wife #4 torture the audience with their 'debut'. And invest in acting coaches, for crying out loud.

See? How many ideas have we come up with in just the last month of all of us posting here? A lot, right? Why is this so hard for them? 🤔😑

I'm one of those annoying people who would watch Christmas movies all year. If I could, I'd leave my tree up 24/7/365. 😁🎄😉

As a retired librarian, I love going to the library. Just to browse. 🥰. There are shelves and shelves of "cozy" romances and mysteries. I am surprised that Hallmark hasn't adapted some of these.  The plots would seem to be perfect for Hallmark; probably better written. Although maybe low on realistic romances.  I have no idea. My taste in reading material gravitates to gritty mysteries. Hallmark was a wonderful escape. The movies were my chocolate candy, cup of tea, finding jeans that fit, glass of wine, a good night's sleep, catching the breeze on my porch, yada yada.  You get the idea.

Do it.

Years ago I read an interview with Carrie Fisher where she showed off a fully-decorated Christmas tree that she kept up year-round.

I thought: Hmmmm…don’t hate that idea…

And eventually, I succumbed to it.  In a small way.  It’s three feet tall & is hung with Starbucks coffee ornaments: one (sometimes two) for every year since they started making them.

Wellll…I just blubbed my way through the last twenty minutes of To All a Good Night.  This after I missed the first twenty!

I love Kimberly in everything.  And Mark!!l  More please.  I’d be okay with him opposite Lacey.  Or Bethany.  Or Rhiannon.

One of my fave movies from last year on Hallmark Mystery. And yes to Kimberly, and fuck yes to Mark - that salt & pepper hair with those eyes and that sexy ass voice? Please, please yes! 😋😍

Let's see if we can figure out where the additional footage is in Three Wise Men and a Baby - Extended Cut.

I don't have the original movie on my DVR so I wasn't able to watch the original movie before viewing the extended cut. One scene that jumped out at me was at the ice rink. I don't remember seeing the three men skating on the ice with the baby in the stroller. I know I would have remembered Walker and Hynes showing off their skills on the ice. That was NICE!!!

Which scene(s) have you spotted that were not in the original cut?

This links to an article listing everything included in the Extended Cut of Three Wise Men and a Baby that was not in the original version. For those who missed the airing last week, Hallmark will show the extended cut again this coming Monday evening July 15, according to the schedule on the Hallmark website.

Thanks.  I haven't watched the original version in a couple years, but my impressions were pretty correct as to what was new.  The extended cut fleshes out the brothers and their relationships better and also gives a better understanding of how deeply their father's desertion affected each of them in different ways; creating the flawed adults that they are at the start of the movie.  There was also more emphasis on the mother and her heroic efforts to raise her kids on her own.  We also saw a little more of the love interests which made it easier to see how they each came together with  their brother.  In all, I thought it was a better, more well rounded movie.  I liked the original just fine, but the extra scenes developed the story in more depth.

I didn’t watch the movie, but reading the description I thought what a waste of talent. Rachael Leigh Cook and Sam Page are too good of actors to be in a movie that has the same plot as several other Hallmark movies.

Rescuing Christmas was a movie made for Hallmark Now last year that debuted last night.

Personally, I liked it more than the one last year because of Rachel Leigh Cook and Sam Page.  They elevated the material.  Plus, I have a soft spot for Duluth and it was filmed on location there.  I thought they'd have more shots of Lake Superior.

Speaking of Hallmark Now.  It's being rebranded to Hallmark+ this fall.  I kind of hate that there's some material on it that actually intrigues me and I wish it'd be on the regular Hallmark channels.

More tea on Holiday Touchdown, currently being filmed in Kansas City:

One of the local sportstalk guys was cast as an extra (great choice: Alex is the best-looking guy at that station!), and yesterday was his first day on-set.

I know I’m geeking out on this, but it’s totally released the 10-year-old Donny Osmond fan in me 🤣

This movie came out originally last December on Hallmark's streaming site so it's technically a 2023 movie.  But RLC doesn't do a movie every year and she varies the outlet she works with so I'd be surprised to see her in a Hallmark movie in 2024.

Does anyone know what happened to Kellie Martin?  She used to be a staple and was one of the better actresses.  Last night I watched a movie (I think an older one) where she and her daughter went to a ranch in Montana.  Did Hallmark deem her as "aging out" because I think she may be in her early 50s? I didn't realize I hadn't seen her in awhile until I watched the movie.

The lead actor - who I also haven't seen in much of anything anymore - was way over the top in his Christmas love.  But both actors overcame the usual Hallmark triteness; I actually enjoyed the movie.

She's 48.  She used to be a regular on Hallmark but in 2015, it looks like she started exclusively doing the Hailey Dean mysteries other than that one Montana movie you mentioned.

Once those movies ended, she really hasn't worked much as an actor since.  Just one movie in 2022 for Lifetime.

Agreed, I enjoyed this one far more than the black & white Where Are You, Christmas with Lyndsy Fonseca.

For the most part, I'm enjoying seeing most of my favorite xmas movies this month. There are a few that I still don't care for, with Never Been Chris'd high atop that list. I cannot stand when characters are written immaturely compared to their ages. If the story calls for the leads to act like they're still in high school, then I'm gonna need the actors to be nearer to that age range. Writing mid-30s characters like they have absolutely no life experience takes me right out of the story.

And as always, I cannot abide Cindy Busby or Eloise Mumford in anything. I'm sure they're very lovely people IRL and I'm sorry to them, but it is what it is. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I absolutely LOVED Rescuing Christmas. I know, I know, the premise has been done before but this version was whimsical and kept my interest 100% of the time.

LOVED the leads, LOVED the two elves who were tasked with granting the three wishes and LOVED her parents. So funny and all these actors have great comedic chops. This is a keeper on my DVR for the rest of July and for certain will be on the DVR the entire Christmas season coming up.

I keep two trees up all year round.  My sister is fighting stage 4 colon, kidney and liver cancer, so she moved in with me while doing her chemo.  She said the trees make her happy.  But I will tell all of you, because of her situation, I cannot abide  any holiday movie that has death as one of their premises.  Hallmark seems to make a few of those.  I refuse to watch them.

Did Hallmark buy out Great American Family, or did they merge?  The reason I’m asking is that so many older Hallmark movies are being shown on GAF.  The Mrs Miracle movies, A Royal Date for Christmas, and a Very Corgi Christmas just to name a few.

I'm guessing they're movies that Hallmark did not produce themselves and had acquired, and GAF got rights to re-air them.

I gotta admit, the commercials for tonight's new movie, A Very Vermont Christmas, aren't showing me any chemistry between the leads. Do the directors just choose them at random and then say, 'OK folks, give me absolutely nothing!' 🤔😑

And what's with the floppy hair choices for Ryan McPartlin? Far fewer men can pull off this look than they believe, their stylist is just lying to them. He's a good looking guy, but the dishrag on his head is a no for me.  🤷🏽‍♀️

I give it 5, maybe 8 minutes of my time to change my mind. Tops.

Same story, just a different "my father's/mother's business" product. Otherwise the same as a myriad of other crappy storylines.

I deleted A Very Vermont Christmas from my DVR after watching for 15 minutes.

OTOH........ A Very Merry Mix-up, A Dream of Christmas and The Christmas Waltz remain on my DVR for the month of July. These movies will be back on again come October/November and will remain on my DVR through December 31st.

A Wish for Christmas seems to have escaped me this Christmas in July. This is usually on my DVR also during the holidays.
