Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

Your Pet Peeves are your Pet Peeves and you're welcome to express them here. However, that does not mean that you can use this topic to go after your fellow posters; being annoyed by something they say or do is not a Pet Peeve.

If there's something you need clarification on, please remember: it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; don't talk about what they said, talk to them. Politely, of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be treated with respect. (If need be, check out the how to have healthy debates guidelines for more).

While we're happy to grant the leniency that was requested about allowing discussions to go beyond Pet Peeves, please keep in mind that this is still the Pet Peeves topic. Non-pet peeves discussions should be kept brief, be related to a pet peeve and if a fellow poster suggests the discussion may be taken to Chit Chat or otherwise tries to course-correct the topic, we ask that you don't dismiss them. They may have a point.

I find tying two things together to help me remember if I’ve done something. When I worked my coffee maker had a timer so I would take my medication and set up the coffeemaker for the next morning . Later on if I wondered I only had to check that the coffeemaker light was on to know I took my pill.
When I know I’m going to wonder later about something that couldn’t be tied to something else I will say it  out loud . “ yes you unplugged the iron” , “yes  you turned off the burner , “ yes you closed the garage door “ etc.  Might be just my brain but it works for me.

Every time I pull out of my garage and then hit the clicker for the door, I say "the door is closed."  Like you, saying it out loud works for me.  When I started taking a regular medication several years ago, I had to buy a weekly pill organizer because I could never remember if I had taken a pill each morning.  Since it caused raging hot flashes, it was not something I wanted to accidentally double up.

I'm glad to know that other people have these issues!

Well color me surprised. I had no idea that turning over the medicine bottle wasn’t just a normal thing that normal people do normally. I take an otc antihistamine before bed, turn over the bottle, then flip it back over in the morning. I also count out two weeks worth into my small bottle every other Sunday, so I can count and check myself if start to doubt myself. More recently, I’ve gotten a couple of prescription meds to take daily, that I put in a sectioned pill case so it’s obvious if I’ve taken the daily dose. Not aimed at @roseha- just saying that there’s nothing weird about having a plan to keep up with one’s meds.

No offense taken, @SoMuchTV!  It's just that I've been taking medication pretty much all my life and don't want to mess things up.  Although strangely when I've taken a few more temporarily this year I didn't have a problem with it.  Maybe because some of them were in a limited amount, who knows.

For me this is what I do with putting the bounce sheet in the dryer.  I got tired of getting upstairs and thinking "did I put in the dryer sheet?" going to check and, of course I had, every single time!  Now I am what they call "mindful" of it, say out loud that I am doing it and spend a second paying attention to what I'm doing.

I think that's the key - most of the stuff we can't remember if we did or didn't do are the automatic things we tend to do without really thinking about it.

The one that drives me crazy is: did I turn off the car 👀. And only because two different times I left my husband's new (2006) car running while I went into a bank (& some store)...you couldn't hear the engine running when it was new. Then I read an article re: people dying from carbon monoxide when they unknowingly left their quiet cars running in the attached garage & it's been paranoia ever since! So I kinda miss the ol' key ignitions that haven't been around in several decades. But on the other hand, you can't lock yourself out of your car today, right? I think I prefer the double checking the ignition to getting locked out 😉.

So, pills and ovens and garage doors I’m apparently competent at, but it seems I’m often unable to remember whether I’ve actually said something out loud. Mr TV will either be telling me “yes, you told me that three times already” or “I just found out such-and-such!”  (Me: “wait, didn’t I tell you that last week? I thought I did!”)

Well, when you're a teenager, at home isn't always a possibility.

But, yeah, pick a more private spot than the building lobby for a full make-out session!

At least, as you say, teens have some excuse for being a little too public with their make out sessions.  I had the misfortune pre-covid to be in line at a McDonalds and the couple in front of me were groping each other and making out to the point where it was getting a little pornographic.  They had to be in their 40s.   Someone yelled out at them "get a room" but they didn't take the hint.

Okay, so I work from home and I often sneak a workout in if I don't have any scheduled meetings.  I go on my bike and watch TV, usually the Food Network.  But lately, the Canadian version of the channel is basically airing nothing but marathons of two or three different shows (usually things like Diners, Drive-ins and Dives).  Why does the channel still exist if they've moved all the good stuff online/streaming?

We don't have a smart TV and I hate watching things on my little Chromebook so I miss a lot of things that are streaming. It bugs me but my DH is a Luddite.

I always wonder why the cable providers bother to have free months to try and tempt us  to subscribe.  The last time they had a free month it was endless marathons of stuff like Carnival Eats and competitions for who can make the biggest cake.  If that's the best they can offer, no thanks.

Ugh...I HATE Carnival Eats.  At least Guy Fieri's show is SOMEWHAT interesting...kinda.....ditto with John Catucci's clone of the same thing (both shows).  Maybe.  I want Barefoot Contessa stuff back!

I'm not disabled but my husband is, and it drives me nuts when people say "handi-capable" or "differently-abled".  I was just at a work seminar for an inclusive work environment and one of the people taking the course with me kept saying differently-abled when talking about disabled people.  My husband prefers to be called disabled (so do a lot of disabled people that I follow on social media).

Thought about you and your husband yesterday when I heard a repeat of an interview about Judy Heumann, of blessed memory.

Before moving here I had big irons without auto shut off so I kept the cord wrapped around a bracelet.  When I plugged it in I put the bracelet on, if I was still wearing it that meant I hadn’t shut the iron off yet.  I wish I could get an iron like that here, while I understand the safety rationale I have to get up every five minutes to swipe the iron over something so it won’t shut off.  Otherwise it’s too cool when I have the next piece ready to press and that really annoys me.  (I do have two small travel irons that never shut off but prefer the big one).

People who won’t do things for themselves when they are capable.

I write fanfic and have an online friend who wants to write. Which is great! But she will literally not do anything and keeps asking me questions she needs to learn to research if she wants to write: What episode is this scene from? How does such and such work? What do you think this character would say or do? You need to watch the show and look up things to be able to write, and I may have a different interpretation of the character than you do.

Today she got upset because she asked for help with her fic in a fandom group and people either didn’t know what fanfic was or told her this is not a fic writing group. (Which it’s not; it’s a group about the show and no self-promo is allowed.) I finally had to say listen, not everyone knows about fanfic or is interested in it and no this isn’t a group for you to write. Now she’s all “people are so mean :(“. But the reality is, if this were an original story, no one is going to write it for her and baby her through research. You need some sort of drive, and you’ll never get far if you won’t do any kind of thought for yourself.

The Smart TVs and their controls are a real pain.  We have to call our Son Everytime for one thing or another.  I just don’t have the head for learning new electronics anymore.  Been there, done that.  My Son had to open up a container of olives and open up my nose spray, as both were difficult.  Seniors cannot open up things anymore.  I finally learned how to open up a jar with a knife and air pocket.

Money.

They continue to collect monthly fees from the live channel in bundles from every customer with the channel in a bundle. But they also know that cord cutting is relentlessly chipping away at those fees.

So, they put the good stuff on the streaming version in an attempt to get both cord cutters and people who still have the live channel in a bundle to pay for the streaming service.

I'm not a cook, but I used to enjoy cooking shows. The late Mr. HissyFit called them my "fantasy channels." Real recipes. Good cooks who seemed like people I'd enjoy having in my kitchen. I felt like I was learning something. I made a couple of Ina Garten's recipes and impressed my sweetie. Alton Brown convinced me I could make popovers. No running and yelling by chefs. No drama. Nobody trying to make an entree from gummy bears and goat testicles.

I so agree. I would love to see soft spoken chefs, alone in their kitchens calmly explaining how to make classic recipes. No yelling, no competitions, no sob stories and no "celebrity" chefs rating everything.

I know we have discussed this before, but I hate going through the time change.  Why do we flip to Standard Time in November but to Daylight Time in March?  Shouldn't they both be six months?

Normally it wouldn't bother me so much but one of my doctors has scheduled a video with me Sunday at 8:30 AM.  Which is really going to be 7:30 AM.  No I'm not definitely not an early riser but she's a really supportive doctor and I don't want to complain.  Just about the Time Change!

Because someone decided to delay the switch to standard time to early November (it used to be the Sunday closest to Halloween!) and the switch to Daylight time was in April at one point.  Probably had to do with the amount of daylight.

Vague memory of why is that it has something to do with farming, so maybe that’s why it’s not an even six.

I’m really looking forward to this time change despite losing the hour. The extra hour of daylight in the evening allows me to walk the dog after work in a less “might get hit by a car” kind of way.

The way so many people talk about women aging and how short our so-called prime years are supposed to be.

You’d think we all turned into trolls at 30 and can’t possibly have energy to take care of kids at 40.

And supposedly men all age like George Clooney, and there shouldn’t be any concerns about men having kids older unless they’re literally elderly.

Some women really become more beautiful with age even if they don’t have that barely legal look so many men like, and there are plenty of men who are fat and bald before they’re even 30. Not saying that should be shamed either, it’s the sexism that bothers me.

I hate the overwhelming majority of scented products, including perfume, cologne, aftershave, and scented cleaning products, as they give me instant headaches. The worst offenders are things that smell like lavender, eucalyptus, and vanilla. As far as I'm concerned, the perfume and scent industry can die a quick death.

So that brings me to my pet peeve: my favorite unscented bathroom-sized trash bags have been discontinued. They were the cheap UP & UP brand from Target, and I used them for dumping the litter box. I BMOB to the grocery store, so I don't have (or want) a stockpile of grocery store plastic bags, and those usually have tiny holes in them through which litter will fall.

The moment DST ends, I look forward to the day we spring forward again.  Yes, it's going to be rough Monday morning, getting up when it feels like 9:00, but it won't even take me the full week to adjust, and it's well worth it for it not to get dark so damn early.

I loathe the change, but I'm retired & don't have to rise & shine at the crack of dawn. I like it when it's suddenly dark at 5:00 PM. I'm a winter person now (love winter clothes & feeling cozy with the fireplace on & candles lit 😊).

Re: aging? It's so special to see all these old farts marrying very young (early 20's!) women. So, why is it so skeevy to see an older woman marrying a younger man (like the French president)?

Ok pet peeve time with regard to clothing.  I just had a pop up advert on FB for a women's clothing store and at least in this particular store an XXL is a size 14.  Seriously?

I've definitely noticed that in regards to Land's End.  I have lost some weight in the last few years, but not enough to have to order everything a size lower than I used to.  Their "large" pants look like plus size now.

Do they go all the way down to XXXS though?  And I think many brands have un-vanity sized.  There was a time when size 0 felt like a 4, which would have been too big for me at the time!  I also think they're going on the "average" consumer for that particular brand, who might be smaller.  I know that some brands started carrying XXS/000 when they were trying to expand to Asia.

Exactly.  I don’t think the fashion world understands the under 5’4” set.  Inseam for some petite pants is 30”.  Seriously?  Are you expecting us to wear 5” heels all the time?  I get some shorter ladies are leggy but most of us are proportionate, just like people of other heights.

Bad body odor. I know some people have medical conditions and such but I just had to move a row back at the hockey game because the guy next to me smelled bad and not even turning my head was enough to avoid it. Going to Walmart? Fine do what you want. If you’re going to be out in public sitting next to someone in close quarters you should at least try to shower and wear clean clothes. When a hockey game is 2.5 hours long I don’t want to be in a tight seating space by someone who smells bad.

Same here.  I reminded a friend of what life would be like if we had standard time all year round.  She didn't consider the details.  It would suck and after what I told her she had to agree.  Here in the Northeast our sun sets earlier than it does at the same time in a lot of the country.  People don't realize that the time of sunrise and sunset is also dependent on latitude, and the farther North and East you are in the time zone the earlier it sets.  So at least where I live we have good reason to want to keep DST or perhaps make it all year round.  I've heard so-called "experts" argue about how that would supposedly be bad for our health, but I'd ask them how that's any different than places in the country when the sun rises and sets a full hour later than ours at the same time because they are so far West in the time zone.  I used to visit Indianapolis a lot and witnessed this for a fact.  It's the main reason they held out from observing DST for so long, because the sun set plenty late in the evening, more like it sets here in the Northeast during DST.

Wow, that's long for your height.  You must have a short torso.  At almost 5'2" mine is 29 inches.  Most petite pants are just a tad too short for me.  I fit into a regular misses short better because they're a little longer.  I have short arms and because I'm a pear shape I have small shoulders so there are even some petite tops with arms too long for me.

I hear you.  My pet peeve with the fashion world and petites is why they always pick the largest, brightest, most outrageous prints to offer in petite sizes.  Hello, we're small, those large prints overwhelm us!

Most petite pants I've seen are around 28 inches.  Levi's regular length is 30 inches and their short length is supposedly 28, but the 28s are never too short on me so I guess it depends on the brand.  I've seen wildly inconsistent sizing in the same brand of pants in the same size.  Two pairs will both say 28 length but one is at least an inch longer than the other.  Nothing is standard anymore.

Another pet peeve is people trying to convince me it's "so easy" to buy clothes online.  Not on your life, especially when you're hard to fit!  I ordered two pairs of jeans in a size that I thought I knew fit me because I've bought the brand and size before.  They were huge on me!  Not to mention how you first have to find a good price, a reliable seller, then have to pay for shipping to boot.  I usually hold out for free shipping and free returns for that reason, or being able to return at a brick and mortar store.  Even with all that it can still turn into a huge hassle.  It's much LESS of a hassle to take 5 pairs in a fitting room, try them on and pick the one that fits the best or just not buy any at all than have to go through the online rigmarole.

When I see "talls" listed with 34" inseams, I'm often wondering how many WNBA players they serve, lol.

I hear you, it's become harder to find certain things like bathroom sized trash bags.  I used my stockpile of grocery store bags for a while but recently found some trash bags in that size somewhere so I don't have to do that anymore.  I don't want to use them for that anyway now that in my state you can't get disposable grocery bags anymore.  I'd rather save those for grocery shopping and other stuff.  I don't know what I'm going to do when my stockpile eventually runs out.  I do have a crazy amount of them, though, so fortunately that's not going to happen any time soon, LOL.

My pet peeve with plastic bags is how most of the food storage bag brands have changed to the  "stand and fill" variety, meaning they're boxed on the bottom so you can stand them up and fill them, presumably with pourable food like cereal, powders or liquids.  That's nice but it makes the dimensions of the bags smaller.  think they've forgotten that some of us actually use those bags not just by volume but by size.  I store opened items in them like sandwich and block cheeses, cold cuts, you name it and NONE of them are "pourable" and I need bags that are large enough for those things to fit into!  That said, Target's Up and Up brand is the only one I've found that hasn't switched over to the "stand and fill" feature.  If they ever do I'm going to be really peeved!

Daylight saving time was not done because of farming, that is a misconception (someone posted that as a reason, I think here or chitchat). Initially it was done in the thought of saving energy. It hasn’t saved energy either. It is just a badly decided plan that needs to revert to one time year round.
