Small Talk: The Cabana

We live in San Diego and grandma cannot go to a nursing home. It will kill her and we've had enough death on our family right now.

Sadly, it sounds like it might kill you first. And that is not good.

I am late to the discussion here. I am deeply sorry for the guilt that has been put upon you. I am not sure if your grandma can be put in a nursing home or if there is some financial issue with that matter. If she can be put in one, it would be better for all to do so simply because the professionals in a nursing home are equipped to handle people who need that kind of assistance. As much as we love our loved ones, there comes the day when we may have to hand them over to someone who is qualified to care for them. I am not sure what you mean by the comment that it would kill your grandma. Unless the nursing home is some inadequate place that will cause your grandma to suffer because they won't feed her or tend to her medical needs, a nursing home is sometimes the better option than being tended to by three adults. I speak from experience. I had a sibling who was put in a nursing home. We did our best to take care of him, give him round-the-clock care and provide him with what we thought was a peaceful, loving atmosphere.  Sadly, with us adults working, we found he was not receiving the proper care, even when we had a private nurse come by twice a day. It just became too much. We didn't allow the guilt to eat us up. We knew we did right by this sibling.

I hope you think of the needs of yourself and your son. He is your priority and he needs you. Good luck.

Happy New Year to all those who are celebrating tonight.  Keep safe.

I don't know about everyone else but I'm just not into it.  Nice dinner out with family for me.  Watched early fireworks and then headed home.  My husband didn't even make it to midnight.  Haha.  Which is fine.  Hey, he worked today.

ButterQueen, I just got the connection between your name and your avatar (one of my favorite episodes of one of my favorite shows).

Were you the churn-tamperer?!

That makes two of us, walnutqueen.  At one point yesterday, I read that the odds of winning were 1 in 19.5 million!  I suggested to my husband that those were pretty stiff odds, but he bought a ticket anyway.

I read the odds at 1 in 292 million, which are about the odds of me winning anything other that the occasional $1 (every few years I get a dollar, that's it).  Heck, if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all!

Wanna hear more?  The other night I sprained my ankle ... IN MY FUCKING SLEEP.  Yup, the same foot I torqued last January must have some weak-assed tendons or something, because the top of my foot and ankle are on the pain train, and I am icing, elevating and hobbling once again.  I can hardly wait to see what the rest of 2016 has to offer - NOT!   :-)

Sorry to hear about your sprained ankle Walnutqueen. Hope you heal quickly.

In my best LVP accent, what were you doing in your dream, LOL. ;-)

OUCH! Heal swiftly but more importantly heal well.

Hope you feel better soon.  All it takes is one wrong move and .....  I've done that with my back, and I don't even have a 'bad' back.  A couple of times I've just turned the wrong way and I'm a mess for a week or two.  And when people ask what happened, I don't even have a great story to tell....

WalnutQueen, here, let me kiss your poor foot. XXXXXXXXXXXXX

I'm so sorry.  That twist in your sleep was all you needed.  Maybe you dreamed that you were kicking Brandi or Yolanda and whacked your foot on the bed frame.  If so, you were doing something to help humanity when you hurt yourself.

Keep your foot elevated, and heal!

Still hurts, but at least I can put weight on it, which makes getting to the bathroom and out to the store SO much easier!  :-)

Bedframe - LOL.  I've been sleeping in a recliner for well over a decade, because for whatever reason, a bed exacerbates my injuries and makes my arms go totally numb - I'm talking unable to get up without flopping around like a fish out of water.  I know it sounds ridiculous, but there you have it.  Another secret revealed!  Just as well, since the mattress is total shit!  Pretty sure I injured my ankle by getting my foot twisted in a flannel sheet.  Oh, the ignominy!!!

Old age = slower healing.  Yet another indignity we endure.  :~)

Thanks to everyone for your concern and well wishes - I swear I wasn't fishing for sympathy!

So, how is 2016 going for all of you?

Walnutqueen,

Are you in 100 percent pain?  :)

Seriously, I hope you get better soon xo

100% pain for 5, 7 or 9 days!!!  Now send me all your drugs. stat!

Seriously, though, no, not at all.  This is a fucking cakewalk (with an edible bow) compared to what I did to my foot last year.  It is just another annoyance, and another excuse for not getting with the "2016 Walk a Block more every week" plan.   ;-)

Nevermind the sympathy - I want TEA.  Preferably spilled in a saucer so I can lap it up like a cat.  :-D

I'll send the PP for you. The stewardess will provide you with the best tea and saucer and tuck you in all cozy with a cashmere throw spritzed in organic rose water. The pilot will take you anywhere you want to go to get any treatment you want. Hey, that's what board friends do. Enjoy!

So anyone else in the path of the blizzard that's going to start tomorrow night?  I hate 'weather'.  Past experience with trees coming down and power outages.  I'm in high anxiety.  I know it's not the worst thing in the world and I'm obsessing.

On another note, and I thought of it when reading walnut queen's posts, we got a new mattress last week and although our 12 year old mattress was top quality and pretty darn comfortable, since sleeping in the new hybrid mattress  I'm pretty much close to heaven when I go to bed.  And.....my stiff back problems when getting up after sitting for a while have pretty much disappeared.  I may be spending the next few days on that mattress under the covers if our power goes out.  Oh, mattresses are freaking expensive.

We do have a generator but my DH doesn't think this blizzard is a big deal and hasn't filled the gas cans to the top.  Just pisses me off.  I'm more of the thinking that the more I 'prepare' the less the impact.  I know....I'm ranting.  Thanks for listening

Side note to walnut:  Glad to hear your foot is feeling better.  I expect at least the half block walk this Spring.

Waves hi from an area north and west of DC that could (according to some projections) get 30 inches. I'm crossing my fingers that it's a light fluffy snow and the winds don't end up being as high as projected! My office closed tomorrow though, so at least there's that!

Lisin,  I hope your weather doesn't turn out to be as bad as predicted.  It's a daunting prospect to think about lines being down and traffic snarled, all because of the white stuff.  Even though I live in CA, I have many memories of growing up and living in MA and OH until my mid-30s, and there's nothing like a snow storm in the Northeast -- unless it's an earthquake!  Try to keep us posted on how you are.  That goes for everyone else in the area, too.  Hunker down and stay warm!

The winds are the part that scare me the most.  Good luck and I hope that the weather forecasters are overestimating.

Breezy - if I had your mattress I might never get out of bed again!  I'm so glad it is working out for you - if it helps your back, it is worth every penny.  Oh, and I'll try the half-block walk this Spring, just for you (although here in sunny SoCal we hardly notice the change in the seasons, so I may miss your deadline!).  :-D

I'm wishing everyone in the path of this severe weather safe passage, and hope you can all hunker down with your loved ones and pets to ride out the storms.  Stay safe, stay warm, and please let us know that you're all OK.

Same here. I'll cross my fingers for you, and you cross your fingers for me. I think we'll make it through! In other news this Onion article from last year on how to survive a blizzard cracked me up this morning.

Blizzard Bitch here! I've already tested my new snow blower once. It's electric since I live in a townhouse and couldn't figure out where I could put a gas one for it to cool off without it being stolen. I'm not sure dealing with the electrical cords is worth it. I think I'm just going to shovel frequently. At the risk of sounding like the old fart, I remember when kids used to make money shoveling snow. Never happens in neighborhood.

Actually my biggest fear, other than losing power, is my 15 inch tall cocker spaniel. He won't be walked in this. When he gets pissed off, he'll snuggle up, put his head in the crook of my neck and punch me in the face. Yeah, I'm going to be black and blue before this is over.

We have a poogle (half poodle, half beagle) and he's our first "small" dog and this is our first snow since getting him. Normally we don't have to worry about it as our other dog is a Rottie mix but it just dawned on us that we're going to have to tunnel out for the poor pup by the end of this!

This is my first small dog too and it's a whole different ball game. I had a black lab and a golden retriever before and they were real people pleasers. This one demands that he be pleased, I'm just the maid. Fortunately, because the deck protects part of the backyard there's a relatively snow free area. Problem is, his majesty expects a walk. I love him and he's a really sweet, good dog, but, sometimes he's a little shit.

Good luck Bronzedog!  He may end up tunneling through the snow.

Looks like we have about six inches but the wind has picked up but I don't see any real outages in the region.  Looks like tomorrow morning is going to be the worst.  Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone that they don't lose power.

27 inches here so far and still falling! The ground is level with our deck! This is insanity! The dogs are so mad! I'll try to get a decent picture of them next time I take them out.
