Has anyone seen deals for Paramount+? I'd like to catch the new season of Colin from Accounts and a couple of others shows. Searching didn't turn up anything current, unless I missed it.

I have "Cancel Paramount+" on Sept. 8, 2025 on my google calendar and password list, so maybe around that time of year?
But it was also not too long after my son-in-law canceled theirs, so maybe I was pushed deals because I'd been using the app on my Rokus?
It was $60 for the year with commercials.

LOL I have the same.  But mine expires on 9/14 and I had a $30.00 discount for the one year.  So I had paid $30.00 for the year.  I'll bet they were running a Labor day special.  That has been how I've subscribed to most of my streaming services, I wait for a discount coupon and if the price is right get s a yearly subscription.  I refuse to pay full price.  And IIRC, they are usually around holidays.

I looked at my Peacock subscription and, yup. I got it for $20.00 for the year, a  steep discount off the normal $80.00. This one expires on November 26th. So that must've been a Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal.

I've gotten the $60/year deal a couple of times (for the level that includes Showtime).  The current one started last August.  I can't find the link or discount code I used, though.  If I'm remembering correctly, I had a few possibilities come up when I searched, and I had to try a few before I got a hit.

I just checked my Peacock subscription and it runs out in July.  I paid $79 last time after getting a discount originally.  I've put Cancel Peacock on my calendar, if they start to have more things I'm interested in I may wait for a deal.

Just FYI, I’ve managed to get $30/year peacock subscriptions a couple of times, and supposedly there’s an elusive $20/year offer that comes up occasionally. When I went to cancel my last subscription, they offered me $50/year to renew, but I took my chances and found a $30/year offer a few days after.

Well, I just had to buy another new tv. Upthread I was inquiring about one for my parents.  Mine stopped working recently and I went with a Roku too.  I can’t believe all the good content and all free!  Roku also allows me to access Spectrum on my tv with no box. I do have Spectrum cable package, but the box for each tv is over $15 per month.  And we have 4.

I need to re-access my paid apps.  I’ve too busy to watch that much.

This seems to be the best place for this-it appears that the site Zap2it is gone😢 The url redirects to Newsnation. I know it’s just been TV listings for some time, but I still miss the Cancellation Bear.

I just checked and the really useful site Titan TV is still around and as useful as ever.  Not only can you enter your listings either via broadcast or cable or even streaming, but it gives descriptions of the plots of various episodes.  I used to love to use it to see which episodes of Law and Order were playing.

Thanks! I had switched from titantv.com to ontvtonight.com/guide because titantv wasn’t giving me the correct lineup anymore on my old phone, but it works now. However, it still complains about my adblocker. But it does give nice episode summaries without having to open a new tab like with ontvtonight.

Ooo! Even better! Thanks!
And it even has the old Zap2it Z icon in my Favorites bookmarks.

I’m a bit confused about Peacock (with ads). Watched Wicked , there was something like 3 minutes of ads at the beginning, then it ran commercial free. But a few days later watched a way more obscure movie and there was an ad break seemingly every 5 minutes or so, which is majorly annoying.

Yeah. It varies.
I think it's easier to avoid the commercials if you watch on your laptop?

No inside knowledge but I do recall there have been times when a certain product has 'sponsored' a movie to make it air relatively ad-free.

Since Wicked is such a new and popular movie that will likely have a lot of people watching it, a company that advertises might agree to pay more for one of those sponsorships giving their ads places of prominence.

For more obscure movies/TV shows, it falls under a more generic ad structure.

Wicked is a movie that drives subscriptions and is a valuable IP so it will be treated differently than many other movies on Peacock. Universal and Peacock have the same parent company so they are probably willing to make less money on streaming knowing that they will make more money in other areas (like merchandising and future box office sales).

Plus entertainment contracts are now being negotiated with streaming as a consideration. Older and more obscure movies have less restrictions.

Speaking of Max, I'd be content if they'd just have their captions in English, and not Russian on Hacks.  Everything's set for English, but nope--it's Russian.

I'm trying to figure out how to fix it, but my internet connection keeps getting dropped, even though it's fine on my laptop.  So I reset my Roku box for the umpteenth time, and now the Roku has internet again, but will no doubt lose it again.

We switched from satellite DirecTV about a year ago, under duress--we could no longer use the satellite we had and we couldn't put up a different one.  So I figured, everybody's streaming, I'll get on board.

Well, you know, everybody's on social media, too, and that doesn't make it a good idea.  I've tried--I really have.  But trying to get streaming to work for me has been like the Chinese water torture, chipping away at me every single day.

With some help from Reddit, I think I've figured out how to get English captions on Hacks.  You start the episode, waiting through commercials and the recap (which, tauntingly, has English captions), seeing the Russian captions, stopping the episode, exiting Max, opening Max, going to the episode, waiting through commercials, see if captions are now in English.  For each episode.

And I tried doing it in advance for all the episodes up now, so I could go from one episode to the next.  Sometimes the English captions would "take," and sometimes it reverted to Russian captions.  So I might or might not have to go through the rigamarole when a new episode starts.  And it's that sort of uncertainty that drives me even battier than having Russian captions.

I've invested this much time already, so I'm going to finish this with Hacks.  But am I going to stick around for a new season of The Gilded Age?  Voluntarily putting up with this shit, never mind paying for the pleasure, makes me feel like a dupe.

That’s wild! I’ve watched max through the app on a smart tv (Vizio) and a fire stick, and never run into anything like that. I’m not real familiar with Roku but I think it’s similar to a fire stick or chrome cast? Are there cc options in the settings (before you get into an individual show)? I hope someone here who uses Roku can help!

Have you tried watching on a pc or on your phone or an iPad? Is it doing the same thing there?

There's a Reddit thread about the Russian captions.  Some people helpfully mention that they're using a Roku, but others don't say how they're getting their Max so who knows who exactly is affected.

One guy who said he's not into conspiracy theories said he sent a link to the Reddit thread to his "state representative" with an offer to send screenshots, and wondered if anyone knows Russian and can read the captions to determine whether they're trying to send us a message.

That's a another reason to hate streaming--it results in having to go to Reddit for help.

That happened to us last week while trying to watch The Last of Us on our Roku TV. If I remember correctly, it looked correct in settings but we turned it off and back on and then it was ok. I might have even switched to another language, got out and then put it back. One of those worked at the time. We just watched again last night and had no issues.

Captions on Max via Roku are still in Russian.  Not just Hacks--the Pee Wee Herman documentary, too.

I couldn't get them to go away, and realized there was a flaw in my technique.  When you exit Max, you can't just hit the HOME key on the Roku to get you out.  No, you have to do BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK BACK how ever many times it takes to get to a screen asking if you're sure you want to exit Max, and if you assent, you end up back on the same screen as when you just hit HOME on the Roku remote but it's somehow different behind the scenes, I guess.

From that point, you can open Max again and go to the show and the captions will be in English.

But it lasts only one episode--if you start the next episode, the captions are in Russian again.

My Peacock $29.99 plan for 1 year is running out in a few days.
If I don't cancel,
it's $79.99 for the next year
or $7.99/mo.
Poker Face has 6 more episodes to go through July 10.
So I could cancel and pay $7.99 for 2 months, or even wait until July to watch the all 6 (it's not a very active message board).

There don't seem to be any specials right now, unless I want to try signing up as a student using my .edu email from my former employer and maybe changing my birth year, but that sounds iffy.
I have a middle-aged daughter who is sort of a professional student with active .edu emails who does not watch TV, so that's another possibility.

Poker Face is a Peacock-only show, so they may be timing their next special to start after the air dates of this year's episodes.

Apparently there was a $29.99 plan offered in February:

Thoughts?
When I originally signed up I was watching L&O on Peacock the day after it aired, and sometimes Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, but Fallon and Meyers are on YouTube even earlier, and I don't care about L&O so much anymore.

I would hold out and keep searching periodically for deals. I’ve never paid more than $30/year for peacock, and I’ve never had to go more than a few weeks before a new offer turns up. I keep hearing about an elusive $20/year deal, but I haven’t been able to catch that.

If you really need your Poker Face fix (I don’t blame you, I’m enjoying it), at least wait till you can catch them all in one month.

I canceled Peacock 2 weeks ago and did not get the 19.99 offer. They didn't offer a thing. However, I got an email (to my previous account) that offered 24.99 with code SPRINGSAVINGS. Not sure if it is still valid but it worked for me then.

Try defending Hulu who wants $85 a MONTH for live tv!  This is with the Disney+ deal.

Meh, I see Hulu with Live TV more as a competitor with YouTubeTV and cable/satellite, not with Peacock.  Not exactly defending their price, but it's not out of line with those other options.

I think the ad revenue must be paying Peacock's bills where the subscription fees are low. I have the $20/year Peacock deal, but there are a ton of ads, and you can't fast forward them.

Netflix doesn't even let you do something else while their ads run. I was listening to a stand up special while doing something else, and whenever an ad came on, I had to click over and watch the ad or it wouldn't play. As soon as the ads were over and the comedian came back, I could click over to look at something else while ithe program played. And there were a lot of ad breaks I had to watch, even though I wasn't watching [while listening] to the actual comedy program.

I swear that's by design.  Everything these days seems to really want us to not to be able to figure out any patterns.

And we wonder why anxiety levels are so high.

I have Peacock, but I'm a streaming spendthrift--I just want to have choices, and I pay for no ads on all channels.   I really like Poker Face too, so I'm in agreement with wait till you can get a one-month deal and binge.  I don't know why there's not much activity on that board j. . . but that's another question.

Update:  I see you got an even better deal--Great!

I want to watch Poker Face. I started it, two years ago, but only got three episodes in. I've just started The Closer, for the first time in years. That's on Peacock, so I'm also going to see if I can get a better deal.

I was going to do that but lucked out and was able to renew at $19.99 for another year (see post upthread).
Maybe they are figuring eventually I’ll not bother checking the end of the renewal in time and get rolled over into the $79/yr plan.🤷‍♀️

I get certain channels as Prime add-ons (like Britbox) instead of having to log on separately.  Those are really easy to cancel and start again if you want to go month to month.  They're also easy to use as free-one week trials--you just cancel right away before the week expires.  They charge the same price as the separate channel.  They are usually in the $5 range.

@StatisticalOutlier I can't imagine what is going on with your Russian caption problem.  We do not have that problem with our Roku--but we get Max as part of our cable system so there may be a difference.  Who knows.

You're probably right. I'm just delighted to not have any ads so I don't think about it too much lol.
