S02.E11: Tiny Town

Charming episode and such a unique idea with The Iris and Ioan being a witness.  I, too, have had a little crush on him since “Come About” in Titanic.  The slapstick stuff at the beginning w Elsbeth spraying herself, walking around with one eye closed, and running into walls went on too long.  Cute stuff with the very shy, handsome morgue guy and Kaya — sweet, slow development which I love watching.  The bad guy was obvious but that’s OK.

I also like Ioan Gruffudd. I hope Angus returns.

Good chemistry with Carrie Preston. (Unlike, say, Ioan's lack of chemistry with Jessica Alba in Fantastic Four.)

The beginning scene with Elsbeth and Angus pantomiming to each other was cute. Angus singing to Elsbeth was cute. The reveal of Angus' profession was cute. Lots of cute moments in this episode.

And when he kissed Carrie, I am not ashamed to say I shrieked like a 10-year-old at her first Osmond concert.

By then I was crying.🥲

Good question. They should have at least mentioned their tech people sifting through social media videos (https://wjactv.com/news/entertainment/new-york-city-and-dublin-ireland-portal-reopens-after-briefly-shutting-down-nomad-partnership-livestream-video-connection-inappropriate-behavior-lewd-acts).

I did like the Fireman disclosure.

That was a funny punchline, if unrealistic (to me).

I kept expecting the perfume eye-spray to have a punchline or be related to a clue, but no. It went nowhere.

I wonder if there was a longer version where the perfume-in-the-eye was more important to the story, and where the fireman reveal had a buildup.
Kara kept warning Elsbeth about hot Scot being a musician; maybe there were a couple of cut lines something like:
"What's wrong with being a musician?"
"Well, it's not like being someone who's there to save you from a fire."
Or even Elsbeth saying to Kara's objections to musicians as boyfriends:
"Oh, I don't know. I've always been attracted to musicians and firemen."

Maybe they cut the glue holding the dialog together in favor of keeping all the romantic moments filmed between Elsbeth and Angus through the camera.

I loved the song he was singing in the episode.

I figured out who the killer was early on---because this was an actual mystery for a change, right?  Usually we see the murder/murderer but this was a change in formula.

Yeah, he was too eager to send the victim's employment records to the police.

Wasn't that how the fentanyl was administered to both victims?

When Elsbeth was in protracted pain from spraying herself in the eye, I couldn't understand why she didn't run to a bathroom to flush her eye with water.  A tissue won't help.

In the murderer's office, Elsbeth's many bags were kind of a detriment, since she had to fumble through all of them to find her phone ("kind of" since the phone was dead and the murderer didn't fall for her fake conversation).  We've never seen that before.

My eyes are reeling from all the eye candy on this show lately. First Kaya's morgue guy roommate, now loan. Wowza! 🥰😍

I thought this was a fun, creative episode, although I agree that all of Elsbeth's fumbling with her eye issue went on too long and got in the way of the rest of the episode.

When Elsbeth and Kaya were talking with the suit guy they were standing on the plaza of the Chase Bank building in the Financial District. I recognized it right away because the Treasury building is right across the street. I go way back with that street because my mom worked in the Chase building when I was a kid.

I didn't mind the flirting between Elsbeth and Angus but I don't think they were quite ready for that kiss. But yeah, it's Valentine's Day so I guess I'll roll with it, lol. I do hope we see Angus again.

Cute episode! And yes, add me to the Ioan club please :)

I had never heard of Nancy Wilson before, thank the Gods for Shazam, cause at the beginning I was sure it was Eartha Kitt, lol!

Other than Nancy Wilson from Heart I didn't know anyone else with that name nor do I remember the song even though I was 6 years old when it came out. And I remember a lot from that era. I guess it somehow missed me. Great song, too!

How do you find out a song being used on this show?  I'm pretty sure the end song with the Captain dancing with his wife was by Nancy Wilson.

My closed captioning tells me it was (You Don't Know How) Glad I am by Nancy Wilson.  And I also Shazam'd it.

My Dad (1923-2015) was a lifelong fan of jazz, including Nancy Wilson: wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Wilson_(jazz_singer)

About the dance scene with the song:
It seems this episode was just really leaning into the Valentine's Day theme, and everything else was secondary.
Because of that I expect this episode might hold up over the years more than most episodes of most shows of the current era.
Beside's Ioan Gruffudd for Best Guest Star, would this episode likely get other award nominations?

Thanks, that's interesting. My Dad was a big fan of all kinds of music and had an extensive record collection at home which I listened to as a kid. I still have many of his albums of the big stars from the 50s and 60s in all genres but sadly not her.

The other side of the portal could have been anywhere. Why not Wales?

I blame Outlander. This episode felt like a nudge-nudge wink-wink to romance novels. Set during Valentine's Day and using several romance novel signifiers. Romance has a thing for Scotsmen. Not so much for Welshmen.

I think they needed it to be Scotland so they could have the tartan scarf as a clue.

That too.

Erm.  Agree to Disagree — to violently, dare I say? passionately, disagree.

Under wildly improbable circumstances, they meet & immediately hit it off; are immediately, obviously smitten; he actually saves her life, then *gets on a freaking transatlantic flight to see her in person!!!

Possibly actually doing it could wait at least a few more days, but the kissing?  No.  Just: no.

Where do we disagree? I'm confused by your response. I didn't think they were ready to kiss but just said, "whatever, show" 🙄 because it was Valentine's day. I thought the flirting was OK, though, for two people that just met. How exactly do you disagree with that?

I guess I'm the only one who hated the romance plot.

I didn't hate it... didn't love it much either. Angus is nice. The reveal of his profession was funny because I just thought, huh, not a firefighter this time!

His clothing and grooming look more expensive than a firefighter could afford though.

Why is the portrayal of ... any other country always so cliched on American shows?

I thought the street in the little town in Scotland looked suspiciously like Soho or Tribeca.

Not if you put a herd of sheep in there, that makes it totes authentic!

I did enjoy the idea with the streaming.

But how exactly did Angus know that Elsbeth was in danger, and from whom?

I also knew who the culprit would be right away. A bit of suspense would have been nice.

On a positive note, at the beginning of the show I didn't realize the Iris setup and thought, oh God, not two angels watching the murder in a Very Special Valentine's Episode!

So, glad that wasn't the case.

I immediately went "I can't believe they're using a Nancy Wilson track!" So yes, having been a fan of hers since both of us were young (although she had some years on me), I recognized her. That was what I metaphorically went squee about.

She's well worth checking out, especially her 1960s jazz-inflected work. (Not pure jazz, but jazz-inflected.)

Now, back to the storyline: Has there ever been anything in real life like that Iris installation? I don't care if the answer is no, I still loved it, but if the answer is yes, I'd love to know more about it.

The two sculptures feature a 24/7 livestream from the Portal in the other city, creating a visual bridge between the two iconic cities. Dublin’s Portal facing the capital’s main street, O’Connell Street, capturing the vista of both Dublin’s General Post Office (GPO) building and the Spire together. New York’s Portal is located on the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street, next to the famous Flatiron Building.

The Portal was launched on 8 May 2024, and the connection between Dublin and New York City through August 2024.
