Sad about Colby, and sad for Teeter.

Of all the deaths in this show, this one seemed needless.

Agreed. Of all the blatantly, shamelessly horrible characters on this show, they were among the handful that were mostly decent folks.

I do wish Sheridan would stop shitting on Jimmy. Last year, when Jimmy got his apparent HEA in Texas, I cheered. Now, it just looks like a big fake-out.

However this was Taylor's best writing work of the series thus far. Almost Breaking Bad and Sopranos level stuff, especially in the last five or so minutes.

Why'd they have to kill Colby?  The sad thing is, I'd never heard anything about the crew's families until this episode with them sending his belongings to his mom.

When Beth was trying to comfort Carter in her whispery, sexy talk, I got scared that she'd lean over and kiss him.

On those rare occasions when Beth is not in her "crush, kill, destroy" mode, it seems like whispery, sexy talk is her default go to.

I guess I should have expected it but was surprised but glad to see Mo driving the SUV for Casey. I expected to see the Special Ops guy, Casey's friend.

I'm still trying to figure out what "Casy" got out of the conversation/threats to the man & little girl.  Would someone please enlighten me?  TIA.

Basically a trade-off. Kacey wanted to make sure that none of his other family members - maybe even Jamie - were killed as collateral damage.

Grant did seem to be pretty scared and Kacey was right - it was really shoddy hit work for so-called "elite" wet work killers. It's like Sarah found them shopping in the Bargain Bin.

I understand Kacey's rage, but damn, he couldn't have waited until Grant was alone before making the Counting Coup? Or maybe that was intentional to invoke optimum fear? Either way, that little girl is going to be scarred for the rest of her life.

I thought this was a good episode with significant plot and character development.

The detective that spoke with Jamie, sounds like he already knows that Sarah's death was a targeted hit, and not the random carjacking that the media made it out to be.  Why wouldn't he have shown up with a warrant in hand?  Especially after knowing what Casey told him.  I get that he needed Jamie to give him probable cause.  But couldn't he have gotten a warrant in advance, based on Sarah's connection to Market Equities and their confrontational dealings with John?  He could have asked for Jamie's cooperation, and when Jamie refused, present him with the warrant.  Surely he could have found a friendly judge to grant the warrant.  Instead, he gave Jamie the opportunity to shred all of Sarah's incriminating documents.

I hope he gets a warrant for Market Equities as well and finds some evidence there.

I am not a fan of all the cowboy stuff (particularly the promotion of anything to do with 6666), but I thought it actually had purpose here.  And the scenes really showed Rip's business acumen, that he needs to raise money to pay the estate tax so he has to sell some cattle.

I thought Beth’s talk to Carter was really good especially in such a tragic circumstance.

She is not a maternal person at all, but I thought she was great here.  Showing Carter that she considers him one of the family.  Weren't Rip and Beth going to adopt him?  Or was it just an informal adoption?

Yep.  I had been wondering what happened to Colby, he obviously wasn't with Teeter in Texas but I don't think we had seen him at the Yellowstone.  We only saw the old guy and one other guy and Carter.  So when he popped up in this episode and told Teeter he loved her, it was unfortunately the kiss of death for him.

Whatever happened to the country singer cowboy's girlfriend?  Was she one of those buckle bunnies that Rip threw out?  I think the actors got married in real life.

Kayce let Grant know that he (and his black ops team) are on to Grant, Market Equities, and the murder of John.  I suppose he could have just killed him right there, but Kayce wanted Grant to be scared and make all of the killers scared as well.  And to make sure that they are well aware that if anything happens to any of the Duttons, that he is prepared to kill everyone in Grant's family.

Somehow, I think the last episode will be John Dutton's funeral.

There isn't a lot of time to tie up loose ends:

Jamie (his son?), the Governor special election, Market Equities and their project, the Senator and Clara, Rainwater's problems, the Yellowstone estate and its fate.

I could care less about Jimmy and 6666.

Colby told Carter to get to work in a previous episode when Carter wanted to watch the old guy train a horse---I think.

Searching Jamie's house -

I think this show helps making people dumber. No, just allowing someone in the door does NOT mean that you allow them to search your house. It was insulting for the detective (?) to even suggest that to Jamie, who is, despite all his failings, still the Attorney General of the state. Even if he weren't I think people are within their rights to require that law enforcement follow all the proper procedures, especially if there's the idea that you might be a suspect. Why put yourself in jail, so to speak? Make them work for it. Not obstruction, but follow the rules.

Most "maternal" I've ever seen Beth. Huh.

Does Rip actually have the authority to sell Dutton's property? Shouldn't there be an executor to the will to handle that? Did any of the kids actually talk to each other about what should be done?? I can see lawsuits coming....

Was the old guy cowboy--I forget his name in the scene when Rip told Colby to get the dangerous horse ready for travel? If so the old guy would have intervened and either helped Colby or done it himself.  The old guy has spent at least 2 episodes talking and working with this horse. Sorry I do not remember the old cowboy's name. I know he is a legitimate cowboy first and an actor second.

Beth previously told Carter in no uncertain terms that she was not his mother and he would never be family. I assume this new Beth relates to a future spin off where she and Rip will act like parents.

It was terrible of Kasey to scare that little girl and it seemed out of character for him. I guess I’m one of the few who likes the cowboy stuff and I thought that part was well done.

I think she was in the episode in the front half of the season when the guys were packing up to move to Texas. Since the singing cowboy was in Texas there was no point to her hanging around the Yellowstone after he left. And yep, she broke up his first marriage IRL and they're married now.

Noooooooooo, not Colby! That dumb ass kid gets him killed. Colby is the least offensive guy in the bunkhouse. RIP Colby Mayfield. 😭

Denim Richards has been with Yellowstone from day one. His character does NOT deserve to be used as a distraction or a shock value. Should have killed annoying characters like Jimmy, Travis, Carter or Tate instead. UGH.

Rip is a murderer but Taylor tries so hard to make him a sympathetic character. If he’s a capable leader, when is he going to have the “talk” with Carter about his major mistake? Colby died because Carter doesn’t bother to listen to people’s advice.

Quote

Rip: “John Dutton died.”

Travis: “Really? What happened?”

Me: “Errr Taylor, you know exactly what happened.” 🙄

Jamie shredding documents is rather pointless. The hidden cameras planted by Grant Horton could be recording everything. Did Sarah tell him about the bugs?

I like seeing Kayce in his “black op” mode. It suits him better than a family man with an insecure wife and a rude, bratty son. It’s really weird that Kayce doesn’t ask Grant for confirmation on who actually ordered the hit on John — Sarah or Jamie?

The dynamic between Kayce and Mo Brings Plenty is my favorite relationship in this show. 💙

I agree, Colby was likeable, and I liked him with Teeter, they complemented each other well and I don't understand why they had to kill off Colby.  If a death had to happen at the ranch, why not kill off the old guy?  It would have been very symbolic, this guy has been there forever (even if many people can't even remember his name LOL) and his death may or may not symbolize the death of the ranch.

I would much rather have had Jimmy and his squashed potato face killed off, but I assume that Taylor Sheridan intends for him to headline "6666", whenever that show starts filming.  I have hated Jimmy from the beginning.  Didn't need to see him here, and even though the show stopped cramming Jimmy down our throats, he still annoyed me.

Is the actor who is playing Tate being told to play him as a dry, monotone, sullen teenager?  Or is that his own acting choice and he really is that bad of an actor?  I know the character has to be around to inherit the ranch and fulfill James Dutton's prophetic pronouncement, but I wish they had recast the actor once it became clear that this one sucks.

I think the sadness and compassion shown by other characters reactions to Colby's death at least matches, if not exceeds, the in-show response to John Dutton's death.  Actually feels like a deliberate F.U. from  Taylor Sheridan to Kevin Costner.  "I'll make more of this minor character's demise than I did for yours.  How'd your movie do?"

Also, while it sucks to see a character killed, this show only has a couple more episodes (probably) and it does put the actor in the spotlight and it gives him some memorable scenes on his way out.

Hear, hear!!! And all the cowboy stuff is just filler,  along with watching Kaycee and Monica fix up  their new house, Monica meditatively shelve each dish, yada, yada, yada.

I would be quite happy to seeBeth die while killing Jamie.

I feel like the death was unnecessary.  Colby and Teeter survived that awful attack in the pond.  They were the only couple amongst the cowboys.  Why kill him?  If it was just to emphasize the fragility of life and how someone young could still die on the ranch, they could have killed that middle aged guy that talked to the old guy.

The actor didn't even get a good memorable death scene.  He just got kicked by a horse, and we didn't even see it that well.  The forcefulness of the kick didn't come across on TV for me, to the point where I assumed he was going to survive, it looked like he just got a minor hit on the chest.  Instead, he apparently instantly died.

And even though the show is almost over, it would have been nice to make up stories for what happens to them after the show.  Colby and Teeter get married, they live on the ranch.  Rip takes over the general operations and Teeter becomes head ranchhand.

There's also rumour that Rip and Beth might get a season 6 or a spinoff... in which case Teeter and Colby could have appeared.

A roughly 13 hundred pound animal landing a kick with both hind feet to your chest can easily kill you. I've been kicked twice. First time resulted in a broken leg, the second one knocked me into a wall and resulted in a concussion. The bruise on my thigh from where the kick landed took months to heal.

We saw the horse kick Colby once and knock him back against the wall.  However then the horse reared back and the implication was that he stomped on Colby outside of the scene.  It’s not surprising that the bunkhouse guys reacted more to Colby’s passing than Dutton’s.  They lived with Colby. They only occasionally saw ‘Mr. Dutton’.
How is it that Beth made a habit of visiting the bunkhouse but doesn’t  know a thing about cowboy traditions?

Did anyone else find it surprising that news of the murder of the Governor of Montana hadn’t reached Texas how many days later?  Especially since the Yellowstone crew in Texas knew about it.  Also especially since phones apparently work down there?

Really not seeing how they are going to wrap up storylines in two episodes. The writing sucks.

Watching these last episodes is depressing. It was such a compelling show when it began. The 2 spinoffs are also excellent. It could have gone on for at least 8 seasons if Sheridan hadn't been so greedy and lacking in concentration & scattered his talents so wantonly.

Add to this the writers strike and Costner's ego deciding he wanted his own Western saga (I watched "Horizon"🙄. Have no idea why he released it without at least one more chapter. It doesn't make sense as it is. A big mess.) Don't see myself making an effort to see another Costner vehicle in the foreseeable future. And Kevin? If you're looking for accolades like Dances With Wolves? Recapturing your youthful glory? Stick with the memory 'cause I think that's all that's happening.

Sheridan & Costner cheated the fans who've invested years in Yellowstone  including that interminable-seeming 2 year gap while Sheridan wrangled w Costner during & after the strike. Now we're treated to rushed  storylines crammed into a truncated timeline that, personally, I can't see how will be resolved in one more 60 min. episode.

The whole thing just saddens me.

The original post was about these two.  Couple on the show who then married in real life.

definitely a better written episode with a timeline that made sense.

Kayce/Mo dynamic duo is a win.

Lots of horse malpractice this episode. I expect better from Cowboy Sheridan. From the bit dialogue to the crazy 3-year-old stud...come on...

sorry to see Colby go out that way.

Not Ian Bohen.  The ranchhand on the show who sings country songs on the show all the time.  The guy with the sad eyes.  His character met some buckle bunny or barrel racer who started hanging out with the ranchhands.  Those two actors got married in real life.

That Jimmy is even at that ranch and allowed to work is as big an affirmation of his worth as anything else could be.  If the others didn't rip him for doing some doofus thing, it would be the ultimate disrespect (indifference).

It's like in football (another macho enterprise) where if a coach is yelling at you, it's to make you better.  If the coaches stop yelling, it means they've given up and you may as well quit the team.

I also saw ultimate respect and regard paid to Jimmy when his grieving manifested.

The detective was absolutely correct as to anything he could see in plain view within the space he was welcomed to enter (the living room, in this case).  But yes, it does not extend to the full house, hence, the cops left without searching anywhere else.

I'm glad Sheridan clearly outlined why Beth has gotsta steer clear of Jamie while the heat is on.  She has the choice to try to save what she can for her family, or exact well-earned revenge on a *** not worth it.  We now have the Governor and the Helena PD in full agreement that Jamie needs to go down and go down hard.  Is she wise enough to understand that murdering Jamie would never fill the hole she has and that being at her best and strongest for Rip and what's left of the land is where redemption of any kind lies?

Perhaps the most poignant moment in the series for me was the visual of Teeter leaning on her horse's neck with Walker (name?) on his horse with head bowed and hat in hand at his waist.  What a beautiful and profound expression of loss and agony.  Words would only cheapen that.  For once, Sheridan knew to stand down.

Nits: The Mercedes' back door not having been instantly (automatically) locked when the daughter was inside was inexplicable...Kayce's mystical vision was to specifically engage in a MAD scenario with the hit boss?  Nuh uh.  It would have been more general, e.g. do whatever it takes to protect his family, or that a "coup" was required.  He'd be a pure fool to not discuss the details and approach with his Special Ops buddy prior to taking action.

I'll end by observing Beth's parting words to Carter, "Sure, you do." are rich as can be and fraught with meaning.  Is his family herself and Rip?  Is it the Yellowstone crew?  Is it the Cowboy-world writ large?  Well done, Sheridan.
