I have two friends who describe themselves as moderate, and that's how they are -- socially progressive, fiscally conservative.  Maybe one or two social issues where they're somewhat conservative.  I know they've voted both parties for governor, but I'm not sure about president (I know they didn't vote for Trump either time [we wouldn't still be friends if they had]).

My best friend initially registered as a Republican based entirely on fiscal policy, but then she realized, duh, the government is supposed to tax and spend for the general welfare, all the things she values cost money to create/maintain, and she was being way too rigid in her calls for cutting government spending.  She switched parties as of the '94 midterms, because she was so disgusted by Newt Gingrich's "Contract With America".

I remember that. "Contract ON America" is what we called it. I thought I could never be so disgusted by our government as I was by that. WTF did I know, lol.

I started listening to my first podcast last week to avoid the world.  I went with a true crime podcast.  Serial: Season One. Positively captivating.  Problem is, instead of laying in bed every night thinking about how the world is coming to an end, I've just traded it with laying in bed wide awake going over all of the evidence and facts of the case trying to determine what I think happened.

Last night I watched the latest Bridget Jones movie with a double shot of rum & coke.

My go-to for listening lately -when I'm not feeling music calling me- are the various BBC radio dramas offered (mostly on Radio 4).  Check out Limelight.  It's several short 'seasons' of dramas: like no more than 5 or 6 episodes.  I just started Sir Pterry's Wyrd Sisters which was dramatised in 1995.

Seems BBC Sounds will be going away for those of us outside the UK which makes me sad.  I think it's because we don't pay the license fee.  I listen to a whole lot of music on sounds, particularly Radio 2 and BBC Radio 6 Music.  I guess I may need to sign up for a VPN.

That reminds of a few years ago, when I was down with whooping cough and mono. I was in bed for three solid days and read a stack of my old Nancy Drew books. Boy, some of those things were racist.

Sounds like the Enid Blyton Famous 5 books.  Boy those sure don't age well!!!

About 20 years ago I discovered a very old Bobbsey Twins book. I'd always loved those books as a kid. Yikes! I don't think the ones I read as a kid were as bad dialogue-wise for some of the characters.  Yes, the early Nancy Drew books were very good. The ones written maybe starting in the late 50s/early 60s just didn't have that special mystery mood to them.

Guess I need to do some light reading before going to sleep (no more checking the latest news 👀

I seriously cannot fathom how this happened. I am an idiot and have done some dumb shit over the years, but I have never texted the wrong person sensitive information. It's not that hard to make sure you are texting in the correct group chat (Which good lord, planning a war through group chat??????? How secure is this?)

Who would have thought having a drunk with no government experience lead the Defense department would be a bad idea?

They’re all so incompetent

The spin they’re trying to hide behind is insane

Trump: I know nothing about it

Hegseth: it started with Hilary sending emails to her maid

CIA director John Ratcliffe: It’s Bill Barr, John Durham and Hilary. They never paid a price

I don’t like the idea of a coup, but if it would get the respect of the rest of the civilized world, I’m all for it.

MAGA said that coups are patriotic.  It’s how we got this great country.

It isn’t going to happen, though.

I'd bet you're already aware of this, but the US doesn’t recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. The ICC can open investigations into the crimes being committed internationally, but they won't get very far. The US is the main country that often assists in the investigations. It's the ultimate hypocrisy.

I sincerely hope that the ICC investigates the horrors that are now being committed in the name of the US in that prison in El Salvador.

But remember, everyone, Hilary's emails!

Regarding lighthearted stuff to wind down with before bed, I'll watch "Frasier" reruns, or read a bit of fanfic or watch some fun fanvids for shows I ilke. I have been fortunate thus far to not have any of the kind of nightmare dreams some of you have had, and I"m going to do everything in my power to avoid that.

During the start of the pandemic when it seemed like the world was on fire I would watch the Golden Girls before bed.  It was like comfort food.

Great to meet a fellow GG fan! Then you share in my fury over Bea Arthur's military service being removed from the Department of Defense website. She was one of the first women to join the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during WWII (1943).

I don't know what past/posthumous veterans have done to this administration to deserve being erased from history, but it happened, no matter how many EOs get signed!

Draft dodgers are so insecure. And Hegseth is a scumbag 😒

Did he really say that???  In a sane world, he would be fired immediately.  Of course, in a sane world, he never would have been hired.

I have a FB friend who posts things that are anti Trump.   They are always real news stories from actual news sites.  She has a friend who is always commenting the posts are lies propaganda whatever.   With this latest ineptitude her response was Trump didn't do it.  No he didn't but the people he chose to be in charge of our national security and defense did.

And kudos to the Atlantic editor.  I wonder how many other editors would have used it to get a gig in the Trump administration?  Or covered it up out of fear of retribution.

All you other media outlets take note.  This is what a free press is supposed to do.

I do a cousin of that with "Midsomer Murders."

I have watched "Midsomer Murders" for seemingly decades.  At least until the original Barnaby left. The cozy/quaint villages. That were full of murderous bellringers, murderous priests, a victim being killed via a huge, rolling circle of cheese. With wine bottles being catapulted over a fence/hedge. etc. I may start the series again, from the first episode. I think it streams, live, on some sites.

I worked with confidential and sensitive information in my career. If I had EVER done anything even CLOSE to this my head would have been on a platter in two seconds flat! But what do we expect? I knew this asshole was incompetent and out of his depth. And that's not even the half of what I could say about him.

Heaven help us from this bunch, seriously. I remember Hegseth from the short time my husband watched Fox News. Based on that impression I was worried about him as soon as Trump appointed him. I am still worried. Nothing will probably happen to him. They'll find a way to blame it on a Democrat, I'm sure.

It does on either Acorn or BritBox plus our local PBS station just began airing it weekly beginning with episode 1.  It was also running during early COVID. Someone knows when we need it.  😁

I don't think most of them understands what getting rid of the DOE means.  For a lot of them they probably think without the DOE they can now ban books in their kid's school without anyone pushing back. They can now prevent transgender kids from everything.  That they can use the Bible as a teaching guide.  Or they can hang up the Ten Commandments.  Even though a lot of school districts already do all those things.  How many of them will care when their special needs child won't have an aide?  How many of them will care when their property taxes go up to make up the lost federal money no longer being part of their budget?

Yeah, and they probably think they can prevent kids from learning about inclusion and social justice issues. Because they think that kids' minds are being filled with "that garbage". You know, respect for LGBTQ people, minorities, immigrants, the handicapped, you name it.

Wow! I had a Trumpmare just before waking up this morning 😵‍💫. All I can remember is that people were running around in a panic. The orange menace was threatening to press "the button" to start a nuclear war. Thank God I woke up. Has anyone else had one of these nightmares? I can't remember *ever* having anything like this before. How many days before the next presidential election?

I just had a waking one when I read that article about Hegseth. All I can say is that Trump better keep that idiot away from that button or he might accidentally press it!

Highlights a key difference between current MAGA and Democrats. For the most part, Democrats support policy, MAGA supports Trump. MAGA hated all electric cars until Musk sided with them. Democrats loved Tesla (and Musk by extension) because it was an innovation in clean energy. Democrats still love electric cars for the same reason but can easily ditch Musk and Tesla because it was never about one person or one company.

MAGA genuinely cannot understand that. It’s why they constantly bring upon various Democrats in any discussion of Trump’s bad behavior. They don’t understand that playing tit-for-tat does not work with most Democrats.

It’s probably also why they are more successful at the moment. Blind allegiance is easier to focus.

Meanwhile, I'm a liiberal who never paid attention to Musk one way or another for the longest time 'cause I'm not a tech nerd sort (not knocking tech nerds in and of themselves, just that that's not an interest of mine, so I wouldn't be aware of the big names in that world). He first got on my radar when he made those comments about the people who were trapped in that cave, I think it was? So my introduction to him was throug his more unpleasant side, and that hasn't changed since.

In my state Joe Manchin was considered a moderate.  In the Democratic party (voters not politicians)  he was considered a Republican.  I just watched something earlier where someone was asking what exactly makes someone a moderate?  Is it someone who has some progressive beliefs and some conservative beliefs? My best friend, a gay man, always said he was fiscally conservative and socially progressive.  Would he be considered a moderate?

Yes, that's one way of being a moderate but for me it's a matter of degree on everything too. I tend to be more moderate on some issues, more progressive on others both fiscal and social. It's a mix of things with me. Like I'm for more control over immigration but nowhere near the level and methods of DJT. And I'm for federally funded social programs to benefit the poor and minorities but I might have more limits on what to spend on them than progressives and what programs to support. When it comes to women's rights and LGBTQ I am all for all of them. So I can be very progressive on some things. I most definitely don't support taking a hacksaw to the Federal Government like Trump is doing! Maybe some cuts might be warranted, but not THAT many and doing it in THAT way! I also believe in a very strong separation of church and state. I am a Christian but I'm not one of THOSE Christians!

Last month, I had a dream that we were in a civil war. It had the tone/image of a movie or war zone from the World Wars. Grey, dim, like a winter day. I was with one group. One person shot at someone in a house across the road, then put something back over the window. We were getting orders on a radio, to move somewhere else.

That's freaky - A friend called me today and told me he  had a dream last night that we were in a civil war started by DJT. A political one.

I can't remember when I first became aware of him but I'm pretty sure it was around the time he did a guest shot on Big Bang Theory (where he was portrayed as empathetic - well it was  comedy) but it was really only when he first took over twitter and was such a massive arse about everything that I realized he was a truly terrible person.

This also probably factors into my ignorance about him for so long, 'cause I've never had a Twitter account, so I missed out on so much of the shit he spouted on there. It wasn't until some of it started popping up in discussions elsewhere online that I had any clue of the sort of nonsense he was saying.

Pete is everywhere on social media and on MSM. He's doing a great job.

My question is: Where the hell are the elected Democrats? Why aren't they all over my feeds with the same level of intensity? The only Democrats other than current-citizen Pete that I've seen was a milquetoast statement put out by DNC Chair Ken Martin, some comments from Adam Schiff and a fairly strong statement from Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) who is the Ranking Member on the Senate Armed Services Committee, who said that he would "be seeking answers from the administration immediately."

If you have a Democratic Senator or Representative, please call them on this. All of these members of the administration, some of whom were actually approved with the assistance of Democratic Senators, violated the Espionage Act, the Federal Records Act. The Elected Democrats must keep this issue front and center.

Edited to add Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) to the "Good job for standing up" list.

Personally, I am going to give them a couple of days because they should be dealing with this officially first given the seriousness of the breach. They might know the extent of the conversation that the reporter saw but there is a bigger question if there were other classified conversations happening using the same method.

Found out Sen. Schumer will be on Late Show on Thursday night. I didn't think there would be a new episode, since CBS will be broadcasting NCAA tournament games. The episode would probably start airing after midnight . . . so maybe it's fitting for Chuck?

Left another message for my Congresswoman. I said the line I thought up about the picture of her at Mar-a-Lago looking at Trump like a little girl seeing Santa Claus for the first time. It's not quite "indiscreet HJ at a Broadway show," but it should be considered as embarrassing.

ETA: I'm still rooting for administration officials to get their clocks cleaned.

ETA2: Here is the picture. Maybe I'm being too hard on her?
