Carney isn't just any liberal.  He's an economist and he knows a lot more about tariffs etc than Trump does.  Of course I admit that's probably not saying much.  The problem for Poilievre is he's spent the last couple of years echoing Trump's talking points and cosying up to the far right.  He needs his buddy, Trump, to pretend he's afraid to deal with the Cons.  That's not going over well here, so far.

It’s the only way the USMNT could win the Cup. I mean, they can be good, but they’d need guys like Ronaldo and Messi cooling their heels in undisclosed cells to have a legit chance.

Is the USOC involved with the government? I could see them ordering athletes to stay home for next year’s Winter Olympics. What I can’t see is Los Angeles aborting their Games three years in advance.

I still like my idea of SAFI: Save America From Itself.

If anything Trump will allow Russia to complete again without restrictions.  Ukraine was the main reason they and Belarus were banned in 2024 but their numerous statewide doping scandals have also been problematic and I can see Trump being all nah come over and thinking he can override the IOC.

One of four or five recorded sketches featuring Dennis Miller!

Dana Carvey did a great Jimmy Stewart/George Bailey.

I remember that sketch from when it aired.

Shades of "The Big Lebowski" only in that the old man was really disabled. But he turned out to be dishonest. Makes me wonder if the scene in the movie was inspired by this sketch.

And it's been only 2 months. What will happen to our blood pressure during the next 4 years?

I just started on blood pressure medication this month. I'm sure it would be working better if I didn't get angry 15 times every day looking at the headlines in my inbox.

It's even harder to handle for me now because I'm undergoing an outpatient medical procedure involving physical therapy and other stuff that's monopolizing my time and energy. I've had about 3 posts swirling around in my head but I just don't have the time nor energy to write them right now.

Thankfully my husband and friends have been very supportive. My best friend in NYC - the one that voted for Trump this time and regretted it spent an hour and a half on the phone with me ranting about Trump and Musk last night. Hey at least she's learned her lesson. And being from NYC she didn't help Trump win. I'm considering it a good thing in the scheme of things. I have to look at the positive side.

And my husband, who is one of those "stressed sideliners" is tense every day as the headlines keep coming in. I've been reading that a lot of Republicans are now speaking out and not on board with Musk. His disapproval rating with them is increasing as is Trump's. We can only hope this continues.

Every time a Tesla burns a senior gets their social security!

Thank you, best post of the day! 😄 Interestingly this morning I woke up to news about Teslas burning and then this afternoon got an email from the SSA that my application to start receiving my SS benefits has been approved. So maybe it's true! Keep your fingers crossed! Unfortunately I take nothing for granted.

Tim Walz was on Rachel Maddow's show today and said that we should expect the worst and fight it. It looks like people are starting to speak out. This can only be good.  It was good to see Uncle Bernie and AOC speaking out. On this we all agree. Positive signs.

Judge blocks Elon Musk’s Doge from accessing social security records

Ellen Hollander calls Trump aide’s hunt for supposed fraud a ‘fishing expedition’ in temporary restraining order

Judge Ellen Hollander granted a temporary restraining order that prevents Social Security Administration (SSA) workers from allowing Doge to have access to records that contain personally identifiable information.

The Trump administration says Doge has a 10-person team of federal employees at the SSA, seven of whom have been granted read-only access to agency systems or personally identifiable information.

In her ruling Hollander also instructed Doge to “disgorge and delete” any non-anonymized data it has obtained from the SSA since Trump took office, and said the agency cannot install or access any software in social security systems.

I think she would have won if she had made it through the primary.

It's possible.

For me, it wasn't about her prospects but that it was anyone's guess if her House seat would stay blue or flip if she didn't run. It did stay blue, still, to me, it looks like her career path mattered more to her than the importance of keeping her seat blue.

I like Adam Schiff but I definitely didn't like what he did during the primary. I'm kind of disappointed in him in that regard and wasn't nearly as excited about him winning than I would have been before the primary.

I've said before there needs to be four parties. Left, center left, center right, right.  It would make things more competitive.  Not all Dems are the same.

I agree. I also think that not every Republican is the same even though the ones in Congress currently act like they are. But I'd say the McCarthy Speaker circus from a couple of years ago showed that there are differences, and I think both parties have enough politicians and supporters to create two parties each.

It kind of feels like in the US, the parties form the coalition before the election whereas in Germany, it's formed after the election.

I believe the latter is healthier for democracy as it makes things less polarizing. It doesn't create an either-or situation from the get-go.

For me a big problem is not all media is the same.

I think there are so many different issues with the media... Anyone being able to get a press pass is an issue but so is the obsessiveness with both-sideism. I get that it's a difficult line to walk, still, it's not the media's fault how the candidates behave and stand for. And if they could spend hours reporting on policy for one candidate and one outrage after another for the other then I think this is what they should do. I believe this is their job: report what they observe, and not be worried about how much of the coverage appears to be negative and how much appears to be positive and report on one issue for 600 days straight just to balance the scale.

A couple weeks ago when the Trump administration released the Epstein files (which turned out to be nothing more than already released information) they gave it to influencers. Do we even have investigative journalists anymore? Ones that aren't partisan?

I'd answer that with hard to tell. There don't seem to be many who investigate to write articles but I'm assuming there's some investigating that they do for their books. ...

I think that's another issue with journalism: holding back for books.

Also, the owners and the money. I think newspapers/media outlets have always been owned by people with means but it seems like many are currently owned by people who have an agenda other than reporting the news.

I see social media as another issue. It encourages reading only the headlines and it's easy to spread misinformation as well as incomplete information.

I think a Democrat was going to win in 2008 no matter who the candidate was. There was Republican fatigue.  We were tired of the war. The economy was tanking. Some people say if JFK Jr hadn't died in 1999 he would have ran for the Senate seat Hillary won in 2000 and maybe president in 2008.  We will never know.

No, we won't. I've just heard people say occasionally that Obama becoming president was too much for the country to handle, so, I'm curious how much truth there is to that and if true, if a woman becoming president would have had the same effect.

In some aspects it seems that the country is less ready for a female president than it was for a Black president considering that two have tried and failed against Trump.
Then again, I think there are contributing factors that weren't present in 2008, so, I find it hard to tell what the country's sentiment actually is.

This isn't new, though. It has always been the case that CBP has the final word. Even when you have an immigrant visa that permits you to obtain a Green Card, you can technically still be turned around at immigration. Likewise, even after you passed your citizenship interview and are scheduled for the oath ceremony, they can still tell you no when you show up for the oath ceremony.

Enforcement has also always depended on who's president. Usually, CBP is less friendly when a Republican is in office. However, it's never been as extreme as it is now.

I only recall the traffic jams you inevitably ended up in when leaving West Berlin but my parents always said that CBP isn't all that different from former GDR border officers. The current events remind me a lot of what I heard about how the GDR officers operated.

“NY based law firm Paul Weiss has agreed to dedicate an equivalent of $40 million to pro bono in legal services over the course of Trump’s term to support the administration’s initiatives “

Because he threatened to pull the firm’s security clearances the head of the firm Brad Karp met with Trump and agreed to his demands. The firm is dominated by democrats

If the lawyers and clients don’t push back it will amount to a green light

Trump Order Threatens University Libraries, Museums

Quote

The president disbanded the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Academic researchers, librarians and museum professionals say defunding the agency undermines their commitment to education.

...

The bulk of the agency’s budget—which totaled about $295 million in 2024, or roughly 0.005 percent of the overall federal budget—supports basic library services, including high-speed internet access, Braille and talking books for people with visual impairments, and workforce development training.

I work at a public library and we've already gotten word that this may impact our interlibrary loan service.

I recently watched a documentary about the fall of the Berlin Wall. Before it fell people were terrified of the border officers.  And now people here are afraid of border guards.  We cheered that wall falling and now people are cheering for a wall to be built here.  I don't think I will ever get over how low our country has fallen.

My mother had friends who were lifetime Democrats and they didn't vote for Obama.  Were afraid he would do "too much for black people".  I do think his being elected scared a lot of white people. Add to that the study that came out saying this country was on course to become a minority majority in our lifetime just added to their belief they were going to be fucked. So they decided to fuck everyone first. If Hillary had won in 2008 I wonder if Mitch McConnell and his cabal would have met to promise to make her a one term president by obstructing everything she wanted to do.

Yes but there was election interference both times. Russia in 2016 and Musk in 2024. I will never not believe if not for Musk becoming a "donor" to Trump Kamala would have won at least a couple swing states.

I also work in a public library, but the two previous directors were afraid to rely too heavily upon IMLS. They preferred to only use local funds and rarely applied for grants. This means our budget is safe for the moment at least, and we will not have to adjust services.

The Paul Stein law firm? One of them (at least) should have had the courage to come forward and publicly share that they were threatened (if they were). The same with the Rethugs in Congress. I know it must be a terrible situation to be in; and it is easy for me - or anyone else - to say they should put their lives and their families lives at possible risk.

But something has got to give. And this could be the best place to start. We cannot sustain the constant upheaval everyday; see our institutions dismantled, people being broken. It would only take one person to tell what is going on ... it might break the dam.

I agree.  Not the same thing but look at what happened to Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein.  All it took was for one person to go public and that gave others the courage to come forward because they knew they weren't alone.

There is such a thing as cult of personality. I mean there was even a song about it.  But for the life of me I will never understand the power and sway Trump has over people.

Sounds so very much like Nazi Germany.  Quislings, collaborators, appeasers.  People always focus on the resistance when they talk about this era, and that's important of course, but they rarely want to focus on the many who, for whatever reasons, cast aside their own personal ethics and went along for the ride.  I think this is what's happening now and it's depressing as hell.

I may have gotten the name wrong but it is that big DC law firm that capitulated.  And referenced above, about the threats - there have got to be some serious ones.  I was reading a piece about them going after Liz Cheney and such and of course they didn't commit any crimes, but, to be investigated and harassed is time consuming and expensive.  I know we had the discussion way back about Kathy Griffin and her tasteless stunt, which was Not illegal, just tasteless (big discussion a while back) and how much in legal fees and lost revenue it cost her.  It can cripple a business and a life, at least for a long time.

I think in Nazi Germany a lot of people agreed with Hitler's Final Solution. And there of course were others that just buried their heads in the sand.  But with MAGA America (that will probably be what this time will be called) while I do think there are millions who think Trump is going to make things better I do think a lot of the people in a position to stop him have reason to fear him.  Look at how many Republican politicians are headed to the exits after their terms end. We aren't hearing anything from Liz Cheney now.  Where did all the Never Trumpers go?

I think they are scared to get in the cross hairs.  Liz Cheney has five children  I think they would be fair game too.  Adam Kinzinger does speak out on social media and I think he is a contributor on CNN for what that's worth.   One thing now vs Nazi Germany is that we have 24 hour news, internet, cell phones, cameras, etc.  As Marc Elias says (I don't know if he made this up or it is attributable to someone else) Democracy Dies in Darkness.  But we are in dark times

The US government is closing the main Canadian entrance to the Haskell Free Library and Opera House

The library opened in 1904 and straddles the border between Quebec and Vermont. The main entrance is on the American side and by blocking the Canadians from the main entrance they will have to go thru an official crossing breaking an agreement that’s been in place for over a century

The Canadians will now have to renovate and put an entrance on their side costing them more than $100,000

The sneering.

Anytime you hear from him, his flunkies or his spokeswitch, there’s always the sneer. Things were broken when “Sleepy Joe” was in charge, they’re fixing the problems, and how dare we speak any ill of them. No humility. No chance of compromise. It’s their way or go fuck yourself.

Seriously, did Biden’s Press Secretary speak direct ill about the first Trump regime? Did she say something like “This job is so easy, even Sean Spicer and Sarah Sanders can do it”? No. I would have remembered.
