I think I'll be skipping the next Bachelor.  I am not excited by the guy (forget his name) and seeing the previews of the girls cat-fighting was boring.

I said to my husband, ooh I wonder if they are gonna get a trip to Italy?!  Ha ha, Disney World with all the kids and grandkids.  That could be a real test of the relationship!  Well, Disney owns ABC, so ...

Joan's son looked kind of like as asshole to me.  Re him saying the kids and grandkids are everything to her (she gives her all), visiting them every day -- maybe he agrees with the current VP-elect who believes the purpose of post-menopausal women is to help raise grandkids.

I don't know.  I wonder if this was like the first season of The Real World, where the people were going into uncharted territory, and all the subsequent ones were just...different.  I loved watching the men hang around with each other (the women from Gerry's season not so much), but I worry that they'd be too aware of the cameras to get that magic back.

Look at Charles, who started putting shoe polish on his hair, when he was a very handsome salt-and-pepper fellow before.  That disappointed me.

Didn’t Joan tell Guy after meeting his family that she could picture a life with him? I thought she told both Chalk (I am going to call him that, because I find him as appealing and desirable as a piece of chalk) and Guy, and maybe even Pascal. Or did she only say that in an interview?

If she did, I can see why Guy thought that she was going to choose him.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Joan and Chock are really going be happy in their NYC penthouse plan. It sounds good on paper but

Are they quitting their jobs? Probably not.

They work remote? Possibility.

Are they selling their homes? Definitely not.

They are basically going to go back and forth from MD to NY and KS to NY until one of them has a "conflict" and can't make it or has to leave early.

I carefully watched their entrance. And I could be reading a lot into it, but looking at the micro-movements, it didn't look good:

I know none of us actually know, and we love playing armchair psychologists but I get the impression each of them is filling the “role” the other wants. He wants a hot babe that dresses a certain way and carries herself a certain way. I wonder if she will ever be allowed to have an off day of no make up, sweatpants and ratty hair (well rattier). The illusion is this age appropriate woman that is hot enough to parade around and be the envy of his friends.

And I think she sees him as her knight that will swoop in and give her daily affirmations of how lovable and beautiful and desired she is and provide her an affluent lifestyle. I wonder if he will ever get to have a bad day where he doesn’t respond as quickly as she might like or he will face the wrath of what I will now call “being Pascaled”. Or she will pout and cry that she doesn’t feel “lovable” and he will have the exhausting task of puffing her back up.

When you stick two self important people together someone is eventually going to have to give in. When she wants her family time and he wants to be somewhere else what will that look like? Maybe this will all work out but I’m skeptical.

I was wondering when those weekly dinners became a thing.  Could have been something the kids started started when she was widowed…a temporary way to keep her busy that just kept going.

Who knows.  Mr. Outlier used to go to dinner at his parents' house TWICE a week.  His mom's a really good cook, and she would feed him AND give him a to-go meal each time.  Pretty nice deal for a non-cooking bachelor.

If he got hungry at home, he'd just look in his freezer and select among roast beef with potatoes and green beans, king ranch casserole, etc.

I go to my mom’s for dinner almost every Sunday. She doesn’t force me or anything, and I’m not married and don’t have any kids of my own to keep me occupied. To be honest, I’d rather hang out with just my mom and stepdad than ever again have to go to a family gathering on my dad’s side of the family.  Thanksgiving is usually 20 people, which includes people I don’t care about like my dad’s cousin, the cousin’s daughter’s boyfriend, and some very distant relative I barely remember or know but have to somehow pretend I’m happy to see before I see them again in several months or a year from now. Weekly Sunday dinner with a smaller group of family I’m actually interested in is way better for me.

If Charles lived in the Asian communities near me, his neighbors would have said, "FINALLY!"  When I shop in Asian grocery/markets, I rarely see gray-haired woman or MEN!  Occasionally, I'll see that teltall white line along a part--but that's rare.  I think the "shoe polish" look is more common than not. Perhaps it was discouraged when he was in business.

I think that's lovely, I would always love to spend time with my parents. I think that it's different for Joan - doesn't she want her whole family gathering with her every Sunday, adult kids and grandkids? That's too much, no matter how close they are. Per your question. Gerry’s season shot in 30 days and I imagine Joan’s was similar.  Plenty of time to fall in love, right?    Especially since they only had 2 actual dates until home towns, overnights and the last chance date.

Something else that started to be very irritating to me. Joan had a habit of opening her mouth as wide as she could for any reason. Seeing someone, anyone, it was like a "I'm so surprised to see you!" mouth.

But her eyes remained dead.

She's not ready for this. Why did she even agree to do this show in the first place, I wonder. From deep grieving, to "hey, let's do a TV show all about falling in love!" And it didn't work with Gerry to completion, so she had more time to think about it, but still, "I'm in!!!" with the new show.

I have read that if the couple stays together either one or two years, I forget which, they get to keep the ring.   Kaitlyn and Shawm auctioned off her ring for charity when they broke up.

Then, how is she going to be able to fully commit to this? She has so much guilt within her for "betraying" John, can she really marry this guy? Does she really love him? Could she grow to love him in time? Probably not. He's infatuated right now, but how long is he going to feel that way? They just don't know each other, at all.

It's not like they are in their twenties; things get complicated as people get older.

Yeah, I think the odds are stacked against this working out. The distance issue is the biggest one, but the fact that they don't really know each other is the second biggest. The "bubble" atmosphere of the show, plus Chock's overbearing and competitive nature, plus some trauma bonding over lost loved ones and Joan participating in the memorial for Chock's mom. Those kinds of things can give you a false sense of closeness to someone.

Maybe it's just me and my aversion to over-talkers, but I think once you get past the love-bombing phase with a person like that, the traits that currently made him appealing to her are going to become obnoxious. 

As for Guy, the level of tears seemed extreme and I doubt that it was entirely related to Joan breaking up with him. He's divorced and maybe had some residual bad experiences or else it was a Bachelor audition. 

I wasn't 100% which ones were Joan's kids and which were spouses of her kids, but one of the girls they kept showing in the audience was making some really extreme faces and didn't look happy for any of it.  Made me think something must happen by the end because usually the show only focuses on the audience members who are acting according to the producer's instructions.

Not crazy about the Chock pick. Someone upthread compared him to Peyton Manning and I can't unsee or unhear that. What was up with his skin at the Joan family visit? His neck looked blistered. Maybe he should ask Guy to take a look at it. Felt horrible for Guy. To wake up feeling so good, only to have his dreams crushed. On camera. At the live show, I wish the other guys were able to come over to console him. None of the kids looked happy. Was the Mickey hat with veil supposed to mean they were getting married at Disney?

This is what I found:

A September 2017 DOJ press release indicated that Forney and his business partner James Redding received approximately $2 million from Vassos in May 2010. Forney and his partner used the money to buy what became Stadium Club, a strip club.

I still agree that it tells you a lot about John, if he conducted business with guys like this.

Those kinds of things can give you a false sense of closeness to someone.

Maybe it's just me and my aversion to over-talkers, but I think once you get past the love-bombing phase with a person like that, the traits that currently made him appealing to her are going to become obnoxious.

There goes Leslie pretending to be in her 20's again.  Call me prude, but wrapping your legs around someone like that who you aren't 'dating'? I could never do that with my guy friends....

Or, are they just 'hooking up? Or trying to get his attention by pretending to be young and wild and free?
