I wish I had seen the champ's answer before knowing what the answer was. Not sure I would have gotten Columbia from that mess.

We paused the screen and looked through it. We could make out the letters, as messy as they were.

I said Columbia, because I knew Columbia SC (not in relation to football), and thought there was probably another Columbia in the region. Still, I was surprised when I was right. :)

I yelled at my tv when the FJ! clue was revealed, this is not about colleges or towns, it’s about sports!

I totally agree. The core knowledge needed to respond to that clue is which colleges are in the SEC. That's sports knowledge. I live in South Carolina so I know that the Gamecocks are in the SEC, but I had no idea that Missouri was. I don't follow college sports at all so I didn't get FJ. 😏

I do follow MLB.  Let's Go Yankees!! Also, Let's Go Mets. I would love another Subway Series in my lifetime. 🙂

Always a good choice!

I grew up an Orioles fan, so the Yankees had to lose.  Stopped watching after Peter Angelos bought and ruined the team, but some things still linger.

Yeah, I wasn’t reading Columbia in there either.

I didn't know the answer but I certainly wouldn't have gotten it from the illegible jumble of letters the champ wrote.

I guess if I squint...

...then again I know what I'm looking for...

I'm seeing something like "colundaf" or "Cdumlay".  Rachel was robbed, and if they have another second chance tournament (which I hope they don't unless they invite me back), she deserves a spot.

I also got the TS of harp, Wipeout, beta-carotene, Tropic Thunder, red, The Silver Chair, and Orion.

I didn't get beta-carotene or FJ, but I did get the rest.

There are some college sports I know, and had this been about ACC schools, I might've stood a fighting chance, but Cdumlaq was not a city I know.

It’s been explained on their Inside J!  podcast and probably elsewhere, that the judges can see in real time what they’re writing.  So, yeah, I can buy that they saw him writing the correct letters.

Which seems wrong as two left feet to me.  If the end result is not legible, the contestant should not get credit.  Also, under this system, "Harriet Tubman" should've been credited to the contestant who got screwed on that FJ last year because the "n" would've been clear in real time.  Also, I don't buy that all the letters in Columbia were clear when he was writing it either.

I had a great game, got most of the stumpers and missed DDs and only missed a few clues overall.  I was on fire.

TSs I knew yesterday were: red, Orion,
with Tropic Thunder on the tip of my tongue.

I was disappointed that none of them got Tropic Thunder.  RDJ deserved an Oscar for that performance.

I'm going to be watching football tonight, so just checked the archive.  I have to guess at how I'd have done in Picture the Hit Song -- I think I'd have known everything except "Lavender Haze".

NOW being a TS bummed me out.

I only ran blows, but it wasn't a bad first round; I missed three in slang (which I expected as soon as I saw "recent") but got all but Stuyvesant in trees, all but Waco in U.S., and all but messenger in websites.

DJ was a bit rough; I was terrible in books, only coming up with Go Ask Alice, and missed three in biopics.  I ran slogans and got all but iridium (couldn't get it from brain to mouth in time) in I_I_I, but missed two each in the rest.

No idea for FJ.

October 17:

70% / 59% / 65%

Not terrible in J...I missed one in Planted By, Recent Slang, and That Blows, and two in Picture the Hit Song, Around the US, and App & Website Us"er".

Not so good in DJ…missed one in Books of Mormons and "I_I_I", two in Biopic Subjects and Horsing Around, and three in Historic Slogans and Women's Organizations.

Other than "it must be a portrait artist" I had no clue for FJ.

TSes: (J had 5 + the DD; DJ had ) I got orbiting, maple trees (DD), beige flag, Orson Scott Card, Maze Runner (DD; but only after he got it wrong), fairies, and N.O.W.

I wasn't loving anyone tonight but found myself rooting for Aaron…until he blew that true daily double…. Then I was just hoping Angel would manage to get out of the red.

My late brother was a Gamecocks fan and lived in Columbia...I guess that's were my answer came from, though I didn't consciously know that until I read you post. I used to make fun of the Gamecocks name, you know, sisterly teasing.

Did better in the second round than the first. In J I ran Exercising, missed one in Lighter Vers, two in Peak Experiences, Too Little, and "OO" Late, and four in Soccer.

In DJ I ran 12-Letter Words, missed one in Biology and Culture Shark, and two in 19th Century Photos, Twinning, and Choreographers.

FJ was an instaget.

TSes: (J had 5; DJ had 8 + 1 DD) I got buckaroo, Valley of the Shadow of Death, bluestocking, Michael Row Your Boat Ashore.

Yay, Kelly!

Let's hear it for librarians!!! A relatively easy FJ except my brain said; that F Scott Fitzgerald novel we had to read in high school that had that silly woman and people leaving lanterns at the end of docks. Sigh. The filing cabinet ain't what it used to be.

21 minutes ago, Browncoat said:

Yay, Kelly!!!  But for future reference, don't bet big on a category you know nothing about!

Wait, are we trying to say librarians don’t know everything about everything?

And I’d say anything other than “all in” arguably doesn’t qualify as “betting big”. Anyway, happy it worked out for her.

Nope, just saying that when you hit the DD as the first clue in a category that has a somewhat cryptic name (unlike, say, Biology), maybe play it a little safer.  But that's also why I think they should at least start at the top of the category to get a feel for what the category's about before jumping to the high dollar clues.

Now I’m overthinking but how would you pronounce it?  I think that  ("oovre") would be my best guess at how to represent it.

The first syllable is like "er" - at least the way I pronounce it!  (Without pronouncing the r.)

(I speak French so I may just be being pretentious!)

Me, too. Robert Burns and "genre" are the ones that really make me miss Alex.

The over-pronounced “jjj-OHN-hhra” used to drive me crazy in the Alex days, but I find myself missing it (and other weird Alex tics) too. I love Ken, but Alex will always be the gold standard.

I guess I missed something today, but how would one pronounce oeuvre other than “oo-vhreh”? Was something different said? (Credentials: 3 years high school French + 2 years college)

Thank you, F Scott Fitzgerald, for saving me from a shutout FJ week. Gatsby was an instaget.

The "oeu" (in the French/British pronunciation) is the same as in "oeuf" (egg), which I'm sure is a word you learnt during your studies.

Prof. Google however has taught me that "oovre" is the typical US pronunciation.  Since I've lived here over thirty years, I guess that tells me it's a word one doesn't hear very often.

If other librarians are like me (when I used to be one), librarians know a little about a lot. That could just be me, though. It's useful when people underestimate you. It was my secret weapon as a young woman.

Looking up the TS, I got all of them but swallowing, Shaffer, and Michel Fokine.

I had no idea that the playwrights of Sleuth and Amadeus were related, let alone twins. I don't know if they would have accepted my answer because I would have said Shay-fer rather than Shaffer (and thought it was probably spelled Shaeffer or Schaefer).

I think it's a reasonable mispronunciation based on the spelling, though. They've certainly accepted iffier answers.

I got bluestocking but I was peeved with their definition. I don't think it is specific to female writers but more generally a female intellectual.

I just looked it up and the wikipedia article doesn't even contain the word writer or author. "Bluestocking...is a term for an educated, intellectual woman, originally a member of the 18th-century Blue Stockings Society from England...The term now more broadly applies to women who show interest in literary or intellectual matters."

October 21:

77% / 50% / 62%

Pretty good first round…ran Pup Quiz (making Saber proud!), missed one in Lose a Letter, Fashion, and Nursery Rhyme Lines, and two in Iran and Movie Rom-Drams. Terrible in DJ…missed one in Nonfiction, two in Rock & Pop Firsts, and three in everything else.

Got zero DDs and no FJ.

TSes: (J had 6; DJ had 7 + 1 DD) I got witch/with, spider, fiddlers three, and option.

I'll be watching football, so just checked the archive.  Thankfully, not being able to see the photos was not an issue.

Please tell me Ken didn't actually pronounce Iran like "I ran".  With the "so far away" part of the clue, I fear it's so, but I cannot stand when Americans mispronounce Iran (and Iraq) that way.

The witch and with TS surprised me a bit.

I dreaded the rom-droms category, but I knew all but Brooklyn.  My dread of nursery rhymes turned out to be well founded, though; I missed three (but I did get the spider TS).  I missed two in Iran and ran the rest, so a decent first round.

I only ran invested in DJ, but it was still a pretty good round -- I missed two each in assassins and nonfiction, but got all but "Norwegian Wood" in music, all but quoits in words, and all but Cape Breton Island in coasts.

No idea for FJ, but I did the V-8 head smack when it was revealed.

I am sorry to tell you that he did, indeed, pronounce it as "I ran so far away."  But the contestants pronounced it correctly.

I blame the writers who apparently can't resist a pun, but I was glad that the players said it right.

The true test is how Ken pronounces it when it is not forced by the pun. When it was in a clue (the Daniel one) in the category he did not say it as "eye ran", it was more like "uh ran".

Never heard of Mary's Seven Sorrows before  but came up with pieta through sheet inability to think of any other artistic sorrowful Mary action let alone one with an Italian name.

Felt very smug to have thought of acquit.
