Jeopardy! Season 41 (2024-2025)

Recommended Posts

March 18:

73% / 47% / 61%

Not too bad in the first round…missed one in everything except The Road Taken where I missed three. Not so good in DJ…missed two in "A"uthors, Chorus Line, and I Hope I Get It, and three in 18th Century, 7 Letters 1 Syllable, and Ballet.

Had to think for a bit but I got FJ. I too am a tad alarmed that shows of my childhood (I was 7 when Cheers started and 17 when it ended) are considered classics. Kinda like hearing Nirvana on the classic rock station. At first I was reading it as the actual set only allowed 75 people but then I realized it meant a place within the show and figured it must be something like a bar or restaurant. Then I had to get past the reminder that, yeah, I'm old.

Lily's response of "What is a TV show I don't know?" was quite fitting...reminiscent of Cliff Clavin's "Who are 3 people who've never been in my kitchen?"

TSes: (J had 4; DJ had 5) I got deadly nightshade (before he got it wrong), moose (total guess), and Franklin.

Are you saying that Lily's FJ of "What is a TV show I don't know?" indicates she was thinking of Cliff Clavin but couldn't come up with "Cheers"? If so, she was a lot closer than "Mash." Almost close enough to earn a point on WWDTM, LOL.

Hopefully David's Grandma was proud of his performance.

I got the TS of Deadly Nightshade, but I can see why Alex thought "Night Shade" was its "2-word name." Sometimes spelling does count in Jeopardy!

I don't know how I knew the TS of Franklin. My history knowledge does not include recall for dates and names. Maybe my experienced eye for painting realistic portraits? IDK. Here they are when both were about age 60:
Benjamin_Franklin_1767.jpgWilliam_Franklin_painting_attributed_to_Mather_Brown.jpg

and here's a more familiar portrait of Benjamin Franklin, done about the same time as the one of his son; they're about 20 years apart in age.
benjamin-franklin-1-min.jpgThey do have remarkably similar facial bone structure. Franklin William's mother is "unknown." Perhaps a cousin?

My take was that it was just a funny (for us, not for Lily) coincidence.  I can't imagine being familiar enough with the show to remember the Cliff Clavin Jeopardy! episode, but not remember the name of the show.  Although you never know; I've drawn a blank on things where I could remember every detail except the actual name.

Also - did anyone else get the impression Ken was dying to comment on it, but since she was the first to reveal, he really couldn't?  Then of course the moment had passed by the time everyone missed it and the correct response was revealed.

When I was a kid, I would often hear about various local events being held at "the Moose Lodge," which inspired interesting visuals in my head. I thought of Moose for that reason, after the Elks had been eliminated. The Loyal Order of Moose still exists, according to the internet, but I don't think they are as widespread these days as the Elks are. It may be that the Elks are the only one of those old school fraternal organizations that the younger folks have ever heard of.

I knew about Benjamin Franklin's son because of the musical "1776." At one point someone asks Franklin about his son, and he replies tersely, "We are not in touch at present."

I got it primarily because of Ken Burns' documentary on Franklin. It's worth watching if you can. He was a really interesting guy.

Which was shored up by "1776."

I considered the possibility that she did it as a joke since she had no chance of winning, unless the other two really screwed up their wagers. The others didn't need to bet enough to go below double her score if they were wrong.

But, that's what I mean.  I didn't think elk was that odd of an answer for the first contestant, but the second one saying elks and the third saying benevolent elks was crazy to me.  It's not elk.

Stop trying to make elk happen. It's not going to happen.

Oh, I'm sure he was. I wonder if they talked about it while the credits rolled.

That was what I thought too.  Could have gone with "what is a TV show that's never been in my kitchen?"

I mean -- I hate "Cheers" and I was pretty sure that was it.  M*A*S*H?  Really?

I thought Elks when they first said the clue (disclaimer:  back in the Disco Days, I used to go dancing at the Elks every Saturday!)  But yeah, as soon as that was eliminated I realized of course it was Moose.

The Elks are a "benevolent and protective" order.  The Moose are a "loyal" order.

Oh. That actually makes sense.
I hope that’s the case, in which case we should hear about it on social media.
The world needs a little Jeopardy! humor.

For some reason my first thought was Moose, even though there's an Elks lodge about a mile from my parents' house. Maybe because I was recently watching something on the Midwest Magic Cleaning youtube channel, where he has a running joke about moose (the animal, not the organization).

Again, a good first round and a bad second. In J I ran Slitherin' and Generations, missed one in "Stick" Up and Movies by Decade, and two in Foreign Words & Phrases and The Who? In DJ I missed two in Books, Ballet/Opera, Embassies, and Tough 7-Letter Words, and four in Olympic Host City Attractions and Pop Culture Anatomy. No idea for FJ, though I guessed Napoleon just to say something. I guess I was on the right track (Waterloo).

I have to agree with Ken that GenX is the Best Gen. Loved Ann's story about the birthday postcards for her dad.

TSes: (J had 1; DJ had 3) I got Douglas Adams.

Kinda sucks when you get the DD on the first clue and it's 1000. That's all it's worth either way so it doesn't give you a chance to get ahead at all.

Oh, great, Lume ads have infiltrated my Jeopardy.

lol...just came across this on reddit (looking for something else): James's response to the question of worst character redesign. Someone commented saying Matt looks too much like a long-lost Savage brother (as in Fred & Ben) to be the villain. Now I can't unsee it.

Okay, I went looking for the reddit thread for the game to see if she posted at all.

Someone wrote, "Ironic that Lily's response to FJ! could have come straight from Cliff Clavin." and she replied, "I realized that, and the irony has haunted me since my taping day."

In another comment, she wrote, "Pop culture is probably my strongest forte, so when Classic TV Shows appeared as the category, I assumed I had it in the bag. My mind blanked when the clue appeared and, although I’ve watched four or five seasons of Cheers , I couldn’t come up with the answer. I want to offer my sincerest apologies to Ted Danson, Shelley Long, and-most importantly- Cliff Clavin."

I had no idea for FJ.  Not even a guess.  Most dates in history are meaningless to me, and this was no exception.

The only TS I got was Douglas Adams.

I learned about Copenhagen only recently and at first I thought it was because Jeopardy had had a clue about it recently and then I realised that it was from the UK show Impossible instead. On the other hand I was doing something else and instead of fully forming the name Wellington it's possible I just got to W. W substitutes for Wellington, Wellesley, and Waterloo.

I'm glad that they specified the name of the horse. Napoleon's horse, Marengo, was also named after a battle. Like Copenhagen, he was also at Waterloo.

Sure - but why would "society ladies" want a lock of hair from the loser's horse? 😆

I got curious and looked up a little history of those locks of hair (and yes, it was the horse's hair, not Wellington's! The wording was a little ambiguous!) Seems that snippets of Copenhagen's hair were made into jewelry and prized as souvenirs.

I found this article from 2015 about a British family finding one of these souvenir locks when going through old family papers in their "stately home."   Fun! I wonder what it fetched at auction?

Thanks to the sports ball tournament, where I am, Jeopardy! was on at 10:30 this morning.  Fortunately, my DVR caught the change, and it meant I watched earlier than usual.

And I got FJ!  My thought process was, "Hmm... Henry Clay.  Wasn't he from Kentucky?  Maybe?  Not sure, but we'll go with Kentucky.  Frankfort? Because "fort" in the name?  Oh, wait!  I know!" and had just enough time to write it down.

I also got the TS of salamander, Andrew Wyeth, and Madonna.

In J I missed one in Poetry and Yangtze, two in Fact, 3 Meanings, and Dice, and three in TV Shows. In DJ I missed one in Art of the State and __ of the __, two in Roland Drum Machines and Plant Lore, and three in the 1300s and Ancient Greek Theater.

Now I have People Are Strange by Echo & the Bunnymen stuck in my head.

I got FJ but was not at all sure about it.

TSes: (J had 4; DJ had 4) I got giant salamander and Andrew Wyeth. Tried to find a video of a salamander crying but none of the ones I looked at had it making sounds.

I didn't know anything about William Franklin. When I looked him up on Wikipedia I wondered why the name of Benjamin Franklin's daughter Sally Franklin Bache seemed familiar and eventually recalled the TV series Franklin & Bash.

I used to read a lot about the revolutionary period so I knew about William Franklin, but even if I hadn't, I'd have know that Ben Franklin's son was royal governor of New Jersey from the movie of 1776.

Last night's FJ was hard, but I did get there.  I just thought of early battles in the revolution and then remembered that Henry Clay was from Kentucky, so I came up with Lexington in time to write it down.

Some friends of my parents' were members of the local Moose lodge.  But I got it because Canada + big deer = moose to me.

I said Napoleon.  Because I didn't know.  I was kind of close if you think about it.

I knew it was the battle of Waterloo based on the date, but wasn't sure if Copenhagen was Wellington's horse or Napoleon's.  But I figured London society ladies would don the hair of the victor's horse after Waterloo, so I went with Wellington.  Could just as easily have been Napoleon's horse and French society ladies before he was deposed, I suppose, but it was an educated guess.

I got the missed clue salamander (after frog) and Andrew Wyeth.

I knew it had to be a Wyeth and hoped that it was Andrew, given the death date.  I live not that far south of Chadd's Ford, Pennsylvania, and the Wyeths are everywhere there.  Although I've never actually been to the Brandywine Valley art museum where there's a large collection of paintings by N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth.

Had a pretty good first round, except for one category. Ran Literary Characters Having a Day and Lost in America, missed one in In Sufferable and Come On 22, two in Fried, and four in Songs.

Not so good in the second round; I missed one in Science and Language of the Devout, two in Chimping and Business Busts, three in Palaces and four in the Spanish- America War.

Did not get FJ but I should have.

TSes: (J had 3; DJ had 4 + 1 DD) I got sacred cow and Hay (total guess…just threw out something that rhymed with Day).

Was rooting for Cameron to win again but I like this new champ, too.

Yes, for the soundtrack to The Lost Boys in 1987; released as a single in 1988.

Now that reminds me of an old SNL fake ad - for "Sold Out Gold" - they used "People Are Strange" to sell "G.E. Range"  "Self-cleaning oven, digital timer..."

The other one from that bit that I remember is The Animals' "We Gotta Get Out of This Place...and take a trip to the Poconos."

We saw The Lost Boys in 1987 on an anniversary trip to Santa Cruz, in a theater in Aptos, where much of it was filmed. It was fun being there with the locals recognizing and cheering places (and possibly extras) they knew.

I was mid-post last night when my screen got hijacked by the expired security certificate warning, and that was that. So to resume…

I have been unable to watch for most of this week because my other screen, the one that shows my TV programs, has been hijacked by some sportsball nonsense. (Somehow, this is even scarier.) Because there have been no alternate showings, and because I get impatient with low-quality YouTube bootlegs, I’ve just been going to j-archive to play FJ.

Hope to back among you soon, assuming this site doesn’t go under in the meantime.

That's cool. I saw it when I was 11. My friend wanted to watch it and surprisingly my mom said we could (after making sure I knew it was scary).

For me too.  I tried reading Roots in the 90s (I think).  Couldn't get into it, but the original miniseries is fantastic and should be required viewing.

I liked all of the contestants on Friday, but was pulling a bit more for Josh simply because I don't live that far from Collegeville.

Well, my week is off to a meh start…in J I ran Cybersecurity, missed one in TV Sleuthing, two in Site for More Eyes, and three in the Late 40s, 10-Letter Words, and Also a Musical Instrument.

In DJ I missed one in Bills of Mortality, Twin "C"s, and American Poetry, two in the Arctic, and three in Abbrev. and Johnny on the Axe.

I pre-guessed FJ!!!! And since I couldn't come up with anything else when I actually saw the clue, I went with it.

TSes: (J had 4; DJ had 3 + 1 DD) I got Rockefeller, plague (DD), and Langston Hughes.
