I love the miming, and the “reality” he gives to his imaginary props. To me it gives more heft to his jokes and demonstrates stage professionalism.

I don't want to like argue the point with ya, bud. But I just think it's a bad habit, I tell ya. Ever watch him on Colbert Report? He did it there, and it was hilarious, but now he does it constantly, since when, 2017 or whenever, and not necessarily to punctuate a joke line, he just does it. I'm glad the band doesn't give it much cred with sound FX either. He over uses it.

I tell ya another thing about Stephen i don't like, that he started on The Report. It's an encore to start his show. He comes out, welcomes the audience who are applauding constantly, then he says, "i'm stephen colbert." and again the audience goes nuts. His Report was wildly popular, with a strong fan base, i remember the day he did that: He comes out, welcomes the audience, who are just rabidly applauding, says his name, and they wildly applauded again, and from there on out it has never stopped. NOBODY else does that, nobody.

I'm tellin' ya, Kimmel's so much smoother, so much more engaged on a person to person scale with his audience, it's not even funny, except he is.

All Stephen's gotta do is STOP saying "I'm Stephen Colbert," before his opening monologue and that shit'll stop. I really don't care much for pandering or milking applause. I mean i get it, and it's okay sometimes, but habitually, nah, cut it the hell out. If you can't be real at least give us the impression that you know what real is and fake being real, even tho it's not real to you. 👊

Really liked the interview with Governor Whitmer last night. Her attitude towards the people who tried to plot to kidnap her over mask mandates...she's a far more gracious and understanding person than I think most of us would be.

I also got a really good laugh out of Stephen's reaction to the bit in the Project 2025 thing about people who produce and distribute pornography being punished XD. But his end sentiments in that segment  yes. Afreaking-men.

Best bit was that the media influencer thought he was doing a Sharknado bit, not NATO. I f'love the Sharknado movies, but, wow, I hope the influencer only thought that for a hot "WTH?—Sure?" minute.
Great extrapolation of the possible broader significance of that misunderstanding too.😉

I was glad Stephen had Whitmer on. It made me realize I really knew nothing about the except the crazy plot to kidnap her. She does have a lot of pizzazz. 🤷🏻‍♀️
And pays attention. "I like your tie."

I wonder if the fake mustache on the camera lens was rehearsed?
Had to be, right?

I agree with this. It's a tad disingenuous and wastes show time. At that point, I'm tired of the lengthy applause and want to hear what Stephen has to say.

I liked both the interview and the Project 2025 bit. I've been noticing Gov. Whitmer for awhile now and think she can go on to greater things after she ends her final term as governor

Agree totally, it's phony. It's why Kimmel's so cool, he doesn't show any phoniness, and seems like a regular guy, only smart as hell.

Yup, and i liked that she wants to talk to those tRumpies who tried to kidnap/kill her. Shows her presence in reality and desire to learn.

Oh yeah, Whitmer was okay. Yeah, yeah, a bunch of them nazis about 2 or 3 years ago were gonna 'nap and kill her, oh yeah, it was unbelievable. tRump kept egging them on to do it too, like he does everything. In prison a guy like tRump is called "instigator".

The moustache was probably Stephen at his improv best. Yanno he is a frustrated actor, or maybe "thespian" would be the word for that idjit. But he says he's never done standup, just worked improv at the Second City, doing improvisational comedy. So the miming and the 'stache are probably improvisational on his part. That'd be my guess at any rate. :)

I don't know whether to admire or pity everyone on the show who spent this entire week watching the convention. My head hurts after just watching the clips they've shown on here thus far.

Yeah, Kirkland is Costco’s house brand. Perfectly serviceable products, reasonably priced, but arguably a knockoff of the original.

Sigh.  It might hurt worse if anyone looked up project 2025.

Oh, lord, I kept flipping back and forth to the channel to see when the show would start and I was like, "...dear god, he's still talking..."

Indeed. Though I imagine the sort of viewer who watches this show is the sort whos already well familiar with that.

I managed to tune in just in time to hear the horrific litany of 3 examples of something that could have been more easily 3 examples of something else equally horrific, and that's all I'll say except that the folks there for the event seemed to be averting their eyes and ears too.
Poor Stephen. I'm sure he felt he didn't have that luxury.
Didn't he say recently he might be using shrooms for therapy for such times?
Or was that someone else?
(Rhetorical question unless someone has the answer at the ready)

TitanTV says he's off tonight, as has become normal for Fridays.
Monday is not clear.

The Republican Convention has ended late by about 30 minutes Mon thru Wednesday and Thursday by at least an hour I think thus delaying The Late Show’s live shows. I feel sorry for the audience as well as the staff and crew having to wait (especially Thursday!) given they were already at a late hour in order to do a live show

All worth it for Bernie’s “Sure, it’s 2 in the morning, no one’s watching, let’s get to it “

I saw a listing of what appears to be new shows for next week - all actors & musicians, with the exception of Melinda French Gates.

For me it was a tie between this and "flame-broiled Donny Osmond" as the best lines in the monologue.

Honestly, the whole series of Gaetz jokes was hilarious.  I just couldn't remember them all so I could pass them along here 😄

I'm showing my age here, but my first thought on Gaetz was that he looks like Eddie Munster.  But once Stephen said Donny Osmond, yeah, I can see that.

Quoting myself because now the the guest list indicates Rachel Maddow will be appearing tonight.  Hmm, I wonder why . . .

Matthew Macfayden has been bumped to the second slot.

I'm glad Stephen said such nice things about Biden. In spite of the age jokes, he seems to respect Biden a lot

Me over here both laughing at those jokes and thinking, "That's an insult to Donny Osmond and Eddie Munster." :p.

My sister was so pissed that anyone would compare Gaetz to her teen heartthrob Donny Osmond!  I told her "deep breaths, take deep breaths".

I would have stuck around to watch if I'd known Maddow was going to be on. Since she wasn't, I'm glad I didn't know-- I got really bored and irritated by Stephen and wanted to reclaim my time.

I wonder if the cancellation of Rachel Maddow's appearance on Tuesday's show had anything to do with her recent remarks on the connection between J.R.R. Tolkien and the Right  Wing?  https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2024/07/18/maddow_jd_vances_company_narya_capital_is_aryan_but_with_the_n_moved.html. Rachel and Stephen agree on most things, but I think he would take exception to that.

Rachel Maddow is sick.  She was unable to be in studio for the President's address tonight, had to call in, sounding quite congested.  I don't know if she has Covid or just a bad cold.

I wonder if she will be in Chicago when Stephen is there for the Dems' convention.  If so, she may be on then.

I'm sorry I didn't know she was sick. I don't have MSNBC.

I think it must have come on suddenly.  She was on Monday night and didn't sound ill at all.

With everything that's gone on in the past couple of weeks, it's sort of nice to have some shows with no politicians/news people as guests.

Stephen was back on track last night.  The opening was hysterical and my husband, clearly the last person on earth who hadn't heard about Vance and the sofa was laughing so hard I was afraid he'd pop some stitches!

Coarse humor is not my thing,
but it's always been part of Stephen's repertoire,
and in this case, I guess somebody has to go for it since my team's motto is "When they go low; we go high"
…or something like that.
Seems like that could be misinterpreted as a reference to weed🍀
so I might have it wrong?

Is there a late night host that hasn't stooped to coarseness?  In this particular case if they're going to joke about it I don't see how they can avoid being coarse.  And I am totally here for them joking about it.

Stephen and the other Late Nighters are finally back after the Olympics.

He was very upbeat, of course, and his writers and graphics folks had some fun Walz jokes.
I'm curious to see tonight's take on last night's "event."

His first interview was with CNN news anchor, Kaitlan Collins. I googled her and was surprised that she's just 32. It will be interesting to see the trajectory of her career.

I had wondered why they were all taking a two week break and forgot it was for the Olympics. Good jokes in the monologue and then I went to sleep. I will watch my recording of the rest of the show sometime today or tomorrow

Yeah, I really liked the interview with her, too. I especially got a kick out of her story about the day she found out Biden announced he wasn't running for reelection.

I got a really good laugh out of the clip of Ingrham referencing Milwaukee when talking about Minnesota. Oh, my god, that was amazing. It reminded me of a time I was looking through a Cosmopolitan magazine, and they had an article talking about the cities with hte most single men, for women looking to meet someone. Denver was one of the cities listed.

According to their map, Denver is apparently part of the state of Wyoming :p.

Did Stephen say there were about 6,000 people in the audience the first night of the convention? Whatever the specific number, it’s certainly a lot more than his usual audience. Hillary Clinton was a good guest the first night; too bad for the late hour. Nancy Pelosi was on the second night and let’s just say she knows how to avoid directly answering an awkward question lol. Plus Stephen and company had to deal with a loud pro-Palestinian protester during her segment

Wow, last night was a great show. Stephen really does feed off of the (larger) audience, and of course he had to be buoyed up by those 2 speeches right before his show. I fell asleep before Colbert aired, and watched today, but I'm wondering what hours he and his crew are keeping in Chicago. Is it naps or…?

Both Nancy Pelosi and Stephen handled the interruptions superbly, each in their own way.
Rather than calling for bouncers, Stephen demonstrated respect for the protestors, pretty much disarming them with charm.
Nancy magically took the focus away from them (I may have to rewatch to see exactly how she did that).

Speech classes should show a clip of them doing that.

It grosses me out how Stephen is obsessed with his crowd size. He needs to get past that. It makes him look too much like a certain other prominent person.

We can see the venue. We can hear the applause. We don't need to see him brag about it.
