December 26:

63% / 63% / 64%

Ugh…missed one in Time: New Roman, Children's Lit, Forks Knives Spoons, and Just "E"at It, but 3 in Best Actress Oscars and four in Homophinic Pairs. In DJ I missed one in Colleges & Universities and two in everything else.

But I got FJ! Wasn't totally confident but it was my first thought so I went with it. (Did briefly consider Stuart Little but I didn't think he bit anyone.)

TSes: (J had 3 + the DD; DJ had 3 + 1DD) I got Ginsu knife and The Drew Carey Show.

I got FJ right.

I got the missed clues of Cyprus, Drew Carey Show, Get Smart, and sphagnum.

I only got one in homophonic pairs and that's usually a good category for me.  

Poor first round, great second round and got FJ to end up comfortably in the black.

I slept through the show, woke up just in time for FJ, which I would NOT have gotten. With a category of "BOOK Characters," I had read "Flowers for Algernon" in a collection of short stories. I did not know it was later expanded into a novel. To me, a character in a short story is not a BOOK character, so count a miss for me.

It came to me at the very last moment. I remember getting Flowers for Algernon with my allowance money from the scholastic book fair. This would have been in the early 70s, probably. I’m not sure if it was previously a short story, but it was definitely a paperback book at that time. I’m sure someone with more background can fill us in.

From Wikipedia: Flowers for Algernon is a short story by American author Daniel Keyes, later expanded by him into a novel and subsequently adapted for film and other media. The short story, written in 1958 and first published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1960.[2] The novel was published in 1966 and was joint winner of that year's Nebula Award for Best Novel (with Babel-17).[3]

I used to get the anthologies every year "The Best of Fantasy & Science Fiction," which is where I read it as a short story. It was either in that anthology or a Hugo Awards anthology. But I definitely read a short story.

I read it as a short novel, so it was an easy FJ for me yesterday.  I think it was an assigned reading somewhere in my schooling -- middle school-ish, maybe?  

I also got the TS of use yews, Ginsu, Get Smart, The Drew Carey Show, and Cyprus.  It was an archive game for me, and I would like to think I would have gotten sphagnum if I'd been able to see the picture.

A decent game for me although my only ts's were use yews, and Get Smart.  Said Cleveland Rocks instead of The Drew Carey Show - they might have given it to me😄

Instaget FJ.  I liked it better as a short story than a novel and I don't think I've ever seen the movie Charly, but I do know Cliff Robertson won an Oscar for playing Charly.

Only the TS of Get Smart for me.

This image has lost a lot of its resolution from the hi-def I saw via Paramount+ on my son-in-law’s old 58-inch TV. 

I recorded via my 15-year-old Magnavox VCR/DVD recorder, froze it at about the 18 minute point, then took a picture of the screen in as high of hi-def as an iPhone 7 will go, LOL.🤣

Then, I had to download it and reduce the image size to upload it here. 😵‍💫

But from what I’ve read here, the contestants are quite a distance away from a tiny screen when they (very briefly!) see🥸 the clue, so this should be comparable to what they saw:

The clue read:

  • Peat moss is dead moss at the bottom of a bog, while this moss is found still growing on the surface.

It would've helped if I'd wrapped my head around the category, but I was tired and distracted when it was introduced by Ken:

  • ADDEND"UM"
    (Ken: The "U-M" combo will appear at the end of each response.)

After the reveal of sphagnum moss, Emily quietly remarked that she had "learned something new," as did I — that sphagnum moss is the top layer, and peat moss is the bottom — which seems so logical now that I've read it, but I just never thought about it before — and apparently neither did any of our 3 players that day.
Or the video screen was just too far away?

Emily does have an amazing head full of information, but her betting strategy was not so great. 

It was interesting to hear the winner, Christopher, talk about how he was much more well-rested for the game we saw yesterday than he had been in his initial appearance. I am sure being well-rested contributes to the players' abilities to think of facts quickly, ring in quickly, and calculate wagers.

All 3 were sharp. I have no complaints about these contestants who have been brought back for "second chances."

I read it as a short story, after seeing the movie Charly. Charly did come to mind, but I didn't get as far as Algernon, given my mind then took a detour to Stuart Little and was telling myself that couldn't be right - he was a friendly mouse. 🤪

Me, too. And I fell asleep on the couch. I think the combination of Dramamine (despite it being the "less-drowsy" version), a big dinner, and my uncle's cold house just kinda knocks me out. I got home around 8:30 and didn't realize until the morning that I completely forgot that Jeopardy would have been on. Not entirely sure I knew what day it was (I thought it was Tuesday for a minute this morning).

My uncle's kids were with their in-laws (and his younger son's wife was apparently coming down with the flu their son brought home so I'm not sure if they went anywhere).

On the up side, I was tasked with bringing salad and there was just enough leftover to make a good-sized lunch (after adding some cauliflower and cheddar cheese). I asked if they wanted to keep it but my aunt declined, so at least my tired self didn't have to worry about figuring out lunch for work on Tuesday.

Bleh. In J I missed one in Ceilings and Rhyming Tree Pairs, two in Presidents and Poetry about Prose, three in Sports, and four in Mexico. In DJ I ran 12-Letter Science Words, missed one in Bible Quotes, two in Bays, Reporting the News, and "Ob"vious Responses, and four in Pop Culture.

But FJ was an instaget, so there's that.

I did not know about the bull statue.  I said stock broker then laughed and laughed.  I was closer than I thought.

I thought FJ yesterday was the easiest FJ ever. Black Monday = stock market. There are 2 types of markets, bear and bull. The clue said a symbol of strength and power = bull. Plus, I knew there is a bull sculpture. I suppose it was easy if you know it.

So you're saying that bears are weak & feeble ? Just joking 😂

Funny though as a bear was my first thought but I didn't know if there was a bear statue so went with the bull as I know there's a statue of one.

I can never remember which is a bull market & which is a bear market though.

Yes.  Although bears (at least young small ones) can climb trees (upward), which bulls can't.  Goats can climb some trees.

According to wikipedia, the name Brunei is supposedly derived from "Baru nah," meaning either "There!" or "That's it!"

When we were learning about the stock market in Civics class, there were two pictures in our textbook - one was a slanting line with a bull looking like he was working at climbing it and the other was the same slanting line but with a bear waving his front legs, sliding down on his butt.

Pretty good first round...ran Hey Where's That? and Hunt & Peck, missed one in For The Gram and Speed Dating (I was one year off on the Lindbergh question), two in Touch Type, and three in NBA Nicknames. Not so great in DJ; I ran Women on Trial, missed three in World Capitals and two each in everything else.

I got FJ! I was not at all confident but I couldn’t think of anything else. I question the acceptance of "Anthony," though. (I predict many comments and US Sun articles blaming Ken for the injustice.)

TSes: (J had 2 + the DD; DJ had 5) I only got Andre Agassi.

I got the missed clue of frisk.  I didn't get palpation, but I read during commercials and that word was in my book the next commercial break.  Too bad I wasn't a wee bit further in the book, Maybe I would have gotten that.

I got the entire categories of where's it at and women on trial right.

My TSs today: Frisk, Fear the Beard ("obvious nickname"--saw a beard, went for it), Golf & Gulf, and Andre Agassi. Instead of "palpation" I said "palpitation", knowing it wasn't right but close. Will not be discussing FJ---too ashamed.

I did get FJ, but it was far from an instaget.  I thought for a while, and could only come up with those two at all.  So basically I got FJ through ignorance of any other possible names.  It counts, though, and also breaks the possible pattern of animal FJs.

I also got the TS of frisk, palpation, Andre Agassi, and golf & gulf.

Okay, I broke down and googled "Anthony pronunciation" and according to Wikipedia (bolding mine):

So I'll accept it, since depending on where you're from it doesn't necessarily change the pronunciation.

(Then I just remembered a podcast I listen to that's hosted by a British guy named Anthony Davis so I just pulled up an episode to hear him say his name in the intro. I honestly can't tell if he's pronouncing it as t- or th-...)

Same here.  I asked myself who the famous couple could be in that time and Tony and Cleo were all that came up.  It took a little bit to get there.

I was thinking it would be another animal answer so was all ready with my  answer of hippodrome.

I did not get any ts's or missed DDs.

I remembered the contestant who worked with salmon management.  He was so enthusiastic about it first time around and again last night.

I did not get anywhere near Jumbo for that FJ. Not knowing the story, I focused on the words train and derailment, and tried to come up with a name that tied in to one of those.

I did no better on Tuesday, which was disappointing, because I loved the book “Flowers for Algernon”! Read it twice as a kid. (Wasn’t crazy about the movie, though, and had no idea it was first a short story.) I knew the clue must be referring to a mouse or rat, but I haven’t thought of Algernon in a long time, so he never entered my mind. Of course, I haven’t thought of Stuart Little or Willard in forever, either, but that didn’t keep either of them from making a brief appearance.

Wednesday was at least an instaget. Like some of you, it took me a while to establish which market is a bull and which is a bear, because both are aggressive animals. So I decided to associate the down market with Winnie the Pooh, who is a more docile and timid type of bear. It’s a bull market, or a Pooh market!

Thursday, I was back to my “how could I miss that” ways. Octavia threw me off, because I know Octavia was the sister of Augustus Caesar. I don’t know anything about his romantic relationships, but I remembered Cleopatra making a flirty visit on the TV series “Rome”. So I thought “maybe” and went with Augustus and Cleopatra. Oh well, half right.

Almost an instaget FJ for me Friday, and I questioned my response.  But again, it was the only name I could think of, so I stuck with it.  I was surprised to be correct!

The only TS I got were capital gains, vested, and 1620.

I got the missed clues of vesting, beatific, 1620 and Virginia Woolf.

I got the entire categories of Canadian postal and December right.

Decent game to end the week…in J I ran Girl Dinner and Canadian Postal Abbreviations, missed one in Begins with S and Finance Terms, two in Features of the Planet, and four in TV Writers. In DJ I ran Words on the Map and Gladjectives, missed one in It Happened in December, two in A Masterful Category and Movie Scores, and three in Literary Towns & Cities.

Got FJ pretty quickly...and on a sports question, even! My first thought was a political figure but then I focused on "Brazilian" and who would be someone people actually would think was great...(I remembered that Pele passed away but I didn't remember if it was this year).

TSes: (J had 3; DJ had 6) I got vesting, 1620, tap dance, Virginia Woolf, and beatific.
