Chit-Chat: What's On Your Mind Today?

Message added by Mod-Tigerkatze,

We all have been drawn into off-topic discussions, me included. There's little that's off-topic when it comes to Chit Chat, so the only ask is that you please remember that this is the Chit Chat topic and that there's a subforum for all things health and wellness here.

If there's something you need clarification on, please keep in mind that it's always best to address a fellow poster directly; talk to them and not about what they said.
If you disagree, consider how we can express our differing opinions and still respect the other's opinion and recognize it as valid.
We're all different people, so different perspectives and points of views are natural, welcome even for growing a healthy community. What is important is that we disagree with empathy and consideration. (If need be, check out the how do we have healthy debates guidelines for more).

Hi everyone,

I've created a topic where you can share your feelings about Election Day so that we can keep Chit-Chat a politics-free zone for those who want to escape politics.

Please remember to be understanding and supportive for those who need it and be kind to each other.

Thank you.

79 degrees here and landlord gave heat. Why???

Because it’s a law?

Y’all have to educate me here.  Is this some kind of big city (NYC?) thing? That landlords are required to “give heat” and the tenant has no control over the thermostat or even whether there is or isn’t heat?

Yes, basically, the building owner controls the heat and ac.

That was the way it was when I lived in an apartment in 92.

I get it but they are at least following the law.

No, actually they're not. Here are the heating requirements for NYC:

From October 1 to May 31, the indoor temperature must be at least 68°F between 6 AM and 10 PM when the outside temperature is below 55°F. From 10 PM to 6 AM, the indoor temperature must be at least 62°F regardless of the outside temperature.

So if the landlord is sending up heat when it's 79° outside, that's not a legal requirement and a huge waste of resources.

I would have my own heat off in that case, but they are following the law. It is of course a waste because people will have their windows open in that case. There’s a start and end date and they are following it. Once it’s on, it’s on, and they don’t turn it on and off during that time period.

But that's not correct. They're providing heat within the specified dates but not according to the specified temperatures. And they do turn it on and off during the stated time period. They don't just leave the heat on constantly from October to May. That would be nuts, for exactly the reason @oliviabenson is talking about.

I actually know something about this. I was on the tenants' committee while our NYC building was still a rental, and I was on the board of directors after it went co-op, as president for one year. I fielded lots of heat-complaint phone calls, so I can reel off the regulations in my sleep.

I don’t see a maximum limit.

I give up.

It’s been in the 70s this week in NYC. We’re not getting heat. I believe the boiler has a thermostat and doesn’t turn on. If some building somewhere is giving heat in this weather they may have a crazy landlord.

So you remember a few months ago about my friend that kept blowing me off for this and that, and who I've only seen in person exactly once since they moved back to my state?

I finally ended that friendship.

Not verbally, but they haven't texted me in a week, and I've felt no incentive to initiate contact. Not after this week. I don't want to get into it, it's on another thread (if you've seen my other posts, you already know what happened). I've just finally realized that there's no point in trying to help someone that won't help themself.

I'm not sure what they're going to say if and when they ever text me. I know how stupid and petty and sounds, and this is the last thing I ever wanted to do, but I'll probably just tell them that I feel personally betrayed, and I don't think I can get past it. It sucks and I'm still afraid I'm doing the wrong thing, but at this point, I've hit the wall.

Or a defective thermostat. Either way they're not violating the law, but they're not following it either, as you and I both understand.

Last night, I was going to ask if anyone here, played video games. Anything.  A few women I know, are putting together a Stardew Valley group.  They talked about it, in the early hours of Wednesday morning. I don’t own the game, but was thinking of getting it next week, instead of buying something else, so that I would have company through gaming.  It’s another way that women have community, too.

I play games, though I'm not a woman and and I'm generally a pretty antisocial gamer. Good luck with it, though!

I got up (pre-dawn!) this morning for my last PT appointment - and it was cancelled.  Trying to decide whether to reschedule, or just let it go.  The good thing is that I went back to sleep and got up at the perfectly reasonable hour of 11am 😄

Now off to do the errands I was going to do at 9am...
