That isn't the way it works.  Chicago Fire Dept HQ decides where Kidd is assigned.

Eh, but Boden decided to promote Herrmann to Engine 51 in season 7. I wouldn't mind so much if there was a legitimate opening at 51 for Kidd to become an officer, especially if she got passed up elsewhere.

I keep harping on this, but Herrmann passed the exam in season 5 and waited years for the promotion. It really seems like Kidd is going to get the promotion and a position somewhere instantly, because ~Kelly~, Casey, and Boden are going to pull strings. And there's that inappropriate cronyism/nepotism HQ was talking about earlier in the season. No one immediately pulled strings for Herrmann, who was demonstrably more capable, prepared, and experienced than Kidd. (Watch, she'll get a nice office, too, while Herrmann has been an officer for three years and still can't convince anyone he deserves to have a space to work.)

Sadly, the writers are stupid enough to do this to us.   Those of you who are on Facebook (I'm not), what's the fan reaction to Stella/Sstellaride?

Don't the writers and showrunners read fan forums?  Or do we have to post comments on Twitter?

And hence, it will further hammer home the point of portraying female first responders in the wrong type of light. This would be the prime example of letting drama override authenticity.

How did Gabby find out about Mouch’s award? If Casey’s not talking to her, then who is?

So Casey can’t talk to Gabby without Brett spiraling into a petulant depression, but Brett can provide emotional support and advice to Ex Boyfriend Cruz at her apartment? Sounds about right for Brett.

How ridiculous that Kidd was given bugles and a white officer’s shirt (which she was wearing at Mouch’s ceremony) for passing the exam. She's not a lieutenant until she lands a lieutenant position, which she acknowledged herself at the beginning of the episode…but it looks like she was actually made a District 4 Relief Lieutenant, based on her helmet during the fire at the end. What?! So, remember how special it was for Herrmann to finally have a set of bugles in season 7? And remember when he passed the exam and waited two years for a position, rather than instantly becoming a relief lieutenant? ...so.... What?!

A plane crashes onto a building, and a single Squad rig and one ambulance is called to respond, with what looks like a bunch of bystanders running around under the dangling plane. Yeah, that sounds right. (Not.)

Kinda shitty that Boden talks to other people besides Kidd about Kidd’s future. And, oh, don’t tell her about it, because she probably can’t handle it or something. How insulting. (For the record, it also wasn’t cool when Casey talked to Welch over at Truck 66 on Gabby’s behalf back in season 3.)

Heh, look, Cruz is going to kill another person!

I wonder if Casey actually talked that other chief into seeing batt chief potential in Casey. And with all the “successes” at 51, Boden gets promoted, too. And then a spot opens up for Kidd. (Wrote this before the promo. Yep.)

Aaaaaaaaaand with the Stellaride marriage proposal and prolonged makeout session in the middle of a burning building, Chicago Fire has, on a Very Special Episode, jumped the fucking shark. What an absolute disgrace and a disservice. I hope Taylor Kinney really does leave and takes Stellaride with him.

Now we have legit proof that this show really has become Chicago Fire Anatomy. They just need to add Shonda Rhimes to the credits as producer. I really do want to puke. The CFD should sue.

You are wrong Casey: Gabby is ALL our past....... not just yours! We've move on a long time ago! Just waiting for you to catch up!

The writers really needed to add that scene so to make it "official"!??!! She's been gone for many seasons. I hope that's the last time her name is ever mentioned!

What the Blazes!!!! In the middle of a fire, Severide decides this is the best time to propose. At first, I thought he was going to strip nude and leap into the fire. Nope! He made an even worse move by bending the knee! The show should have "gone for broke" and had the two bang in the middle of the fire.

They were too busy sucking face to get smoke inhalation!

All the way from Puerto Rico, Gabby heard about Mouch's medal?  Who is the mole in the house that's still in touch with her? That person should be transferred to the worst house in the department.

Funny! Not too long ago Mark was screaming for his life/close to weeping hanging by the building. Now he's on the ground, laid back, brandy drinking, smooth talking business to Cruz. And at the end, he is just a lame stalker. The roller coaster of emotions on this guy in one episode was amazing! For a moment, I thought he was going to steal Cruz' idea and make his own slamigan. Also, shouldn't he have bought bottles for the others on Rescue? They could have dropped the rope hold him and Cruz.

Couldn't Cruz still work for CFD and still be a CEO? If the others can run Molly, why can't Cruz do this?

Why is it up to Casey/Boden to find a new house for Stella? Isn't there a person in CFD in charge of staffing?

Stella is way too good for Morningside! So Severide/Casey/Boden would be fine if she skipped the line of other deserving new lieutenants waiting for their assignments?

Now we need to hear a speech about how "special" Kidd is from Casey. Yuck! The poor Captain had to sit there and feel what the audience has been tortured with for a few seasons. Welcome to the club sir!

The girl had a razor blade in her hair! Maybe now I've seen it all with this show. What was taking the police so long to show up for a trespasser? Also, was the girl sneaking a razor blade in the school? Scene was weird! I guess both should be in trouble?

There's a ceremony in house and they never took the trucks out of service? Too bad the call didn't come in to interrupt Boden's speech. Wonder how long it took them to change out of their uniforms.

DC Hill needs to pull Boden aside to tell him changes are coming but can't tell what the changes are??!!! Why is she a tease to him!

I can see Boden and some others moving on! Change is needed!

I couldn't help but watch this episode with the thought of Severide leaving in the back of my mind.  First I thought he was going to get hurt or die in the fire, then I thought that something was going to happen while they were in bed...  As a fan of Taylor Kinney, I kinda hope that his contract status is being kept a secret just to keep people guessing, and he'll come back better next year with more fun rescues and less investigations.  But that's probably just wishful thinking on my part.

At least Casey finally grew a spine.  Or a set.  Or maybe finally both.  I don't really care if they get together or they don't, I'm just sick of the uncertainty.  Did anyone else also think that Casey was describing Brett and not Kidd when he was talking to the other Battalion Chief?

Also, did anyone else think that the fire at this restaurant was the same building as the fire at the laundromat a few months back?  Is the city of Chicago getting sick of them lighting stuff on fire so they have to repeat locations?

That investor guy was full of 💩. An oral agreement (even if there had been one) wouldn’t be enforceable.
It was cute that Tuesday the Dalmatian was at the ceremony. I love seeing firefighters in their dress uniforms.

If Boden leaves, this show loses all since of credibility. Casey as a battalion chief, carrying on a romantic relationship with a paramedic who works under him. Ugh. That has trainwreck written all over it. And then two Lieutenants in the same house who are engaged. Just ugh. Dick Wolf is willing to let his first Chicago franchise show basically dissolve into a slightly more serious version of Station 19? Please leave Taylor Kinney. Get out of this mess. Run far away. This show is making a mockery of the CFD at this point. This show was supposed to show insight into the every day dramas that CFD members face. Not showcase relationships and drama, and become devoid of anything resembling the CFD.

Someone back at dispatch needs some more training on the type of call.  If only CFD had a truck with a ladder they could extend up to the airplane....

Yeah, the investor was a snake (instead of a shark), but, damn, Cruz, $5 million dollars? Just sell the Slammigan patent, if you actually have one (very, very doubtful), and let him have the headaches of trying to sell to public agencies (Hint: it's not easy to get contracts).   Now, you play gangster right in front of his mansion, which likely has surveillance cameras, because, you know, he's rich.  And maybe the cameras catch your two idiot backup firefighters and it becomes a conspiracy in CFD.  Maybe a lieutenant spot will open up at 51 sooner than they think.

The proposal.  It's official, Chicago Fire has reached Station 19 levels of absurdity.

It's nice to see Boden actually ordering the hose lay in the building first.  Not that they actually stopped any fire.

Anyone notice that they actually had a hired bartender at Molly's?

I guess it was good that they broke out the window first, so that they knew they had an escape?  I dunno, it was cheesy, but I guess that's all I expect these days from this show.

It's my understanding (very limited, I know nothing) that you can't put water on a fire while the search and rescue is still going on.  Not only could the water pressure itself harm or kill someone, but the steam and smoke it would create would basically cook people alive, victims and firefighters alike.  So while it's frustrating that we rarely see them extinguish any fires, I thought the show's portrayal of this was actually fairly accurate?

Beyond the soft porn romance novel cinematography of it, taking off your SCBA mask in a fully involved fire is insanely irresponsible and something you just don’t do. It goes against...like, everything. The writers now don’t even take the fires they film seriously. There is nothing left for this show.

I might get roasted alive for this, but True Love is Lt. Casey screaming at Candidate Gabby in sheer, horrified panic when she took off her mask in a fire. It’s not some weird suicide pact thing that ends with making out and cutely finding a back door while your brothers try to rescue you and/or the structure continues to burn because the full effort can’t start until they’re out. That’s someone’s livelihood burning. (So glad Cruz salved his anger by unnecessarily destroying that wall.)

Severide stopping to propose to Stella in the middle of a roaring fire is the stupidest thing I have ever seen, bar none. Not just on this show but on any show. These are supposed to be veteran fire fighters, and this is how they act? They know the ceiling could come crashing down on them at any moment, right? OMG. Just when you think the writing couldn't get any worse.

Totally off topic for this episode, but I always found it odd that it’s never been overtly acknowledged that Boden’s wedding was crashed by that horrific call and that his wedding anniversary is shared with the anniversary of Shay’s death. There’s a subtle storyline there with good dramatic contrast. But they choose to write episodes like this instead.

I'm a terrible person, because I now keep imagining that scene happening, but with the ceiling crashing down on both of them. 🤣 If only!

Aside from the Stellaride junk, I'm kind of miffed that the writers spent 13 episodes harping on Dawsey and then resolved it entirely off-screen. I would never call myself a shipper, and I stopped buying Matt and Gabby as a happily-ever-after couple in season 4 (but kinda loved them in seasons 2-3, when the show was normal), but that's a conversation I wanted to hear/see. I wanted real closure on those two, and I think more was needed than what this episode gave; even after three years of slow build-up, Casey and Brett as endgame still seems super weird (but not bad), and I don't feel like I can pinpoint when or why Casey fell for Brett and/or when he stopped waiting for Gabby to come back. It more seems like the writers were told to move on.

It seems that once again the writers were using Casey's feelings over Gabby as a lame plot device to drag out the Matt and Sylvie drama. Just like bringing up Matt's head injury storyline with time line discrepancies galore. It's pretty obvious the writers have gotten lazy and their one and only focus, it seems, is to push drama ahead of authenticity. It's pathetic storytelling. And compared to other Dick Wolf shows, the Law & Order franchise, and FBI, and even oldies like NY Undercover and Homicide, the One Chicago franchise has totally jumped the shark. None of the shows even try to be believable anymore. They just want to be a discount Grey's Anatomy and Station 19.

I don't think I have watched this series long enough to have the slightest clue who this Gabby person is.  I have heard her being talked about quite a bit, but I don't think I have seen her on screen.

She was on the show last season for the winter finale. She was the one who showed up out of the blue and demanded Matt attend a gala and get her wine, without once apologizing for walking out on him and nuking his life. That’s Gabby.

But this is something I’m curious about... A lot of online commenters here and other places have only watched since season 7 or so. It’s not a show that is backstreamed by any of the major streaming apps. There seems to have been a very quick “drift” in terms of viewership between season 6 and now, and it seems like Gabby is important/remembered only to the writers and some rabid fans on Twitter. So, who is their audience, really? Are there that many long term fans left who really care about resolving Dawsey? (The two ladies on Twitter with twenty Queen Gabby accounts don’t count.)

I can’t get a good sense of people left who have been with the show since 2012 or who have watched all the episodes. But, boy, coming on board without seeing the first 3-4 years must make these characters seem very different. Casey alone has done a complete 180 and 2/3 of the rest became comic relief.  I definitely recommend the earlier seasons...fantastic TV and solid characters (honestly) (it’s the only reason I still watch).

Well, you've seen Stella, so you pretty much get who Gabby was. Different name, same treatment. Every week, some epic heroism, afterwards lauded with praise by every other character.

I honestly don't have anything to add to the comments on the ridiculous proposal so I'll just skip over it....

I didn't understand what the big deal was with choosing a location for the medal ceremony.  IRL medal ceremonies for the fire and police departments are held at headquarters or at the fire/police academy.

You put water on the fire in almost every scenario possible. Lots of water. Especially when trying to effect a rescue. In a properly-run fireground there are multiple truck companies, and the roof will get vented in short order so as to allow heat and gases to escape upwards. Meanwhile doors and windows on lower floors are kept closed to regulate the amount of air getting in. The combination of an opened-up roof and mass quantities of dihydrogen monoxide will make short work of the actual fire if they get there early enough.

With the amount of fire shown, it likely wouldn't have been survivable for long, and the instant they introduce a bit of air to it by going in it would have flashed over, frying the fry cook. With that amount of fire showing, IF they were going to go in they'd probably want two charged lines going in first.

And what's truly mind-boggling about this stupid proposal in such a dangerous situation is that this show is set in the same universe as FBI and L&O: SVU, which was part of crossover event 5-6 years ago. And in the past week, a little girl actually fought off a kidnapping attempt using tips she had learned from watching SVU. It's kind of incredible how two shows, in the same universe, can have two completely different impacts. SVU keeps the realism, and and Fire has decided to become Grey's Anatomy/Station 19. IMO, it would make any idea of a future crossover a joke.

I wonder if Joe has a patent on Slamagan or whether this persistent dude will steal it from him somehow.

The proposal didn’t bother me at all, but all the effort to get Stella a position did.  They sure didn’t work that hard for Hermann.  It was just an afterthought for him until he actually got a truck.  If I were him, I’d be a little miffed at the effort here.   Yeah, she’s good, but so is Hermann.  and what was the point of mentioning the other guy who passed too.  Wonder if he will beat her out of the first position that comes up.

Finally, Dawson is OUT, but why did Silvie stand there on the sidewalk with a dumbfounded look on her face, instead of grabbing that man and taking care of business.  She had plenty of time to call him back before he walked back into Molly’s.

IRL, highly unlikely, as it's made from two tools that are already patented.  Even if so, any FD could make the same tool just as the boys at 51 did.

I think that he does... I don't know why, but I vaguely recall that as part of the episode where they went to a trade show to try to sell it?  I think one of them, like Mouch or Herrmann, mentioned it as Joe was inventing it.  I could easily be wrong though.

Hell, I think it’s hard to reconcile Fire with PD and even Med. The showrunner is on record as saying Fire is a feel-good show about optimism and happy outcomes, with every episode needing a funny subplot. Move it to Saturday morning then.

And pick another fire department, instead of making a mockery of the CFD, one the of the most respected in the country. If they wanted a feel good show, they should work under Shonda Rhimes. They'd fit right in with Station 19. Leave Chicago Fire to the original show runners and follow authentic feel that all Dick Wolf show's have come to be known by.

As Dove described it last week, this is what happens when you remove the patrol aspect from the show, which gave a strong B-plot to the A-plot. Now, with no patrol, we're stuck with a majority of episodes centered on relationship drama, with LaRoyce Hawkins only ever being utilized as the token black man in two-or-three episodes.

Of course every rich businessman comes across as a snake, and a venture capitalist is an easy target.  His schtick was ridiculous, starting with 'I invest in people' to 'I will have the Slamigan'.   How much 'PR' is fire fighting equipment going to generate? To say it's a niche market is an understatement.  And I agree with the earlier poster, you see this scenario on Shark Tank from time to time.  Someone has a good idea for a product but they aren't really business people.  Then it makes sense to sell it outright and move on to your next idea.  I'd take the $5M and buy that nice place you saw, sock away money for the kids' college and not work extra jobs to pay for it. Move onto the next thing, like fire fighting clothes for women.

I will/would be PO'd, too. Ideally, the blue room office in the bullpen would go to Casey, which is what Boden wanted when Casey promoted to captain in season 6. Casey decided to keep his shoebox office. When Herrmann brought up not having an office in season 8, Casey should have moved into the blue room office, and Herrmann should have been assigned Casey's old shoebox office. If District 4 Relief Lieutenant Kidd gets an office space at 51, let alone the blue room office, it'll be yet another sign that the writers are putting to script their laziest first-pass ideas.

The other issue with Boden flat-out denying Herrmann an office is that the second and third shift Engine 51 lieutenants also don't get an office. Boden, Casey, and Severide share their respective offices and rigs/vehicles with two counterparts for each position, but that's never really touched on (like Casey keeping career-ending medical records in his office...). It doesn't make any sense, and it's something the season 8 writers should have just left alone. Anyway.

Wonder if he will beat her out of the first position that comes up.

ikr? Boden once told Dr. Rhodes back in Season 5 I believe (when Herrmann got stabbed by Freddie) that Herrmann was the beating heart of 51, so much for that I guess 😥

Apparently TPTB thought we'd be too caught up with symbolism - "OMG, the building is burning, just like their love!" - to consider any downsides.
