DCC Solo 2020 - “Selah”

2020 has been one thing after another, but one of the biggest issues our country faces is systemic racism and the social injustice that black people face.

For this reason I chose to dance to “Selah” by @kanyewest to use my voice and my art to speak up about the changes our country needs to make. (I do not own the rights to this song.)

The clip you saw of me holding my fist in the air represents solidarity as I stand with my brothers and sisters who deserve the same treatment and opportunities as others. The black costume represented the black community. And finishing with my hand on my mouth represented a voice that’s been suppressed. It’s time that voice is heard.

Kristen!!! Your solo is amazing, just wow! I’m really sorry they chose to ruin it on MTT I’m also sad they talked about you the way they did these are grown women acting like high school mean girls for no reason other than to create drama. You are so much better than what was portrayed I’m so sorry! I love that you danced with such purpose to stand with such conviction in these incredibly trying times, you truly are a remarkable dancer and AMAZING role model in just smh at Kelli & Charlotte but why am I surprised they don’t care about buildings women up rather tearing them down for ratings...

Let me just say that I'm SO happy that Kristin is speaking out.  I have loved her ever since she made the comment about not being a picky eater because she has seen people without anything to eat...all while they were teaching the DCC how to push food around their plate to give the appearance of eating.

Ok, I just watched Kristin's solo on her insta, and I'm getting legitimately emotional. She is so wonderful. She went WAY out of her way to do something devoted to racial injustice, when she didn't have to, for a group of people she knew wouldn't welcome or care for it. That was so brave of her. She knew she was on thin ice with these people (they never seemed to like her, and I'm sure she knows she "barely made the team"), and she did it anyway. She went out of her way to make an actual statement, and they edit it with some garbage track and make it seem like she's some wack job who has no idea how to dance to music. FUCK them. This is actually so amazing to me; I never expected a DCC to do anything like this. 

I always admired Kristin for her passion for ASL and interest in the deaf community—I thought that was really super cool, to see a DCC actually have half a brain and care about something. She always seemed a little outcast to me, probably because she doesn't make DCC her entire life. I also love when DCC have jobs and careers and whatnot—I remember in season 13 she was having such a hard time because she was commuting hours per day and going to TC after a full work day. You know, being an adult with a career, like they say they love and expect, despite how impossibly demanding TC is for anyone in that situation. And season 13 also bums me out because Kristin seems to get needlessly shit on a bunch—it was so bizarre how they acted like she was someone who thought her shit don't stink and would walk onto the team because she's pretty. Huh? 

I love her even more now, WOW. I know the DCC org fucking sucks, but this is kind of a new low. Makes that forced little diversity seminar one or two episodes ago look even more pathetic. 

You're way too good for them, Kristin. I can't even imagine how upsetting it is to have your entire performance warped into a JOKE, when you put that much work into it and when you know only the super fans online like us will be able to find out what really happened. They do not deserve you, fuck these people omg

The dance + music is so stunning, I don't even know how you could begin to warp that into a bad performance. They are so wrong for that, my god

Misrepresenting performances and using editing to support their storylines and justify their bad decisions in disgusting. I hope there is major backlash from vets after this season...more ladies need to speak up. It’s clear the entire DCC organization does nothing to promote female empowerment or a healthy work environment for women.

She did post it.. and it was beautiful. She used the accents in the music and it was a powerful message speaking out against racism!!! How the heck does MTT / DCC think it’s ok to bash her performance when it’s literally speaking out against racism...?

100%. Do I think it was a perfect solo? No, because while I love the theme I think she missed some musicality in a couple of moments. But she had some killer tricks and shows great technique. It’s a very successful solo ALL AROUND. And I’m one that thinks they put too much stake in solos when it’s not what they need on the field (hi, Meredith...gorgeous dancer when she’s not doing DCC style.)
 

I think the judges would have liked to have seen more “power Pom” from her, since she can be soft in their style, but for heaven’s sake...we’ve seen plenty of lyrical and contemporary solos with outreaches hands while wearing a nightie and boy shorts so whatever. 
 

I super love that she posted her solo, and extra love that she’s commenting back AND getting so much support. I wasn’t sold on Kristen when she made the squad, but she’s probably perfection with a bad edit (other than those too heavy lashes.)

Go Kristin!!! Kelli and Charlotte are very obviously afraid of strong women who fight for injustice, speak up for the oppressed, are open about mental health issues, and care about taking precautions during a pandemic. TPTB have missed a perfect opportunity, during this most critical of years, to show that the DCC organization is supportive of strong women and feels compassion for others.

Agreed.  I am so disappointed with this show.  The only diversity Kelli knows is an occasional fist bump with Emmitt Smith.  She should be ashamed of herself.  She likes girls who quote scripture......so Kelli....go read Galatians 6. Let's just say that racism will have to hit close to home for Kelli to have empathy, and more importantly, not exploit it for the purposes of ratings for a reality show.  In the meantime, enjoy driving around Dallas in your oversized SUV drinking your Big Gulp Diet Coke while wearing two pairs of Spanx.

I really can't figure out what they were hoping to achieve by featuring negative criticism about Kristin's solo. Did they not consider the ramifications of editing and harping on it specifically? Kristin is on the team - they don't have to build a story for her. So the big question - did Kelli and Charlotte know this was the direction MTT took?

Kelli is so oblivious she could care less that we are talking about it.  She probably thinks it is wonderful the show is getting so much attention because we are talking about it.  She has really hurt so many of the girls this year.  Wonder what her children think of her?  Better yet I wonder how she would like it if it was her daughter getting hurt?

I’m sure this will be unpopular but Kristin’s solo she posted is horrible. Just because someone WANTS to speak out against social justice (And most of us do!) and chooses a particular “song” to play, does not make a dance performance good. Kudos to Kristin for what she tried to do… some of her dance moves were good.  But no one can say that she did the song justice. The judges reaction on the show was live and immediate after they saw it with the correct music. No conspiracies to taint Kristin...It just wasn’t good.  This is supposed to be Show Group auditions, not a social justice performance art gathering.  Also, like EVERY other dance on the show, they can’t use the actual music she used because of that artist’s licensing prohibiting them to do so, so CMT has to pick something else.  What other music would you have chosen to go with such a strange solo??

That’s an opinion I’m fine with if they said exactly that but they didn’t. They said her timing was off and that’s why it wasn’t good and then the song they used in the clip was also not good for the scene to further “prove” their narrative. Usually when any dancer has a slow contemporary song regardless of copyright issues they always air the scene with a slow contemporary song and hip hop song with a hip hop solo or pop/r&b song with jazz solo.

I found the number 1 issue to be that they didn’t even mention on the show what the solo was about and it’s true meaning, from the clips I saw. I have a hunch Charlotte wasn’t wild about it because she seems like a very privileged and conservative person who doesn’t like to support causes that may not be profitable or popular with her fan base. For once Neil McCoys opinion I took more seirously than a dancers like Kellis or Judys  😂

On another note, credit to Cassie Trammell for sharing this. I notice Judy also wasn’t impressed with Kristens solo so I commend Cassie for going against the grain and not just continuing to drink the look aid.

I have to disagree with you about something... Claire W, her solo, her dancing, her feet, her extension can dance in anything!  The girls who got cut for wearing a sack of potatoes outfit got cut for weight.  Not their costume... if they danced like Claire W of course they would keep her!!!

Besides Jayln not making it back to show group last year, when is the last time a girl hasn't made it the next year? (Aside from being cut all together?) I know someone said ,"it's not the first time, or the last time", even though we haven't seen it in the show. I feel like the first we saw was Jayln. Now this year we have Cianna and Hannah not making it, but we didn't hear anything about it.

I believe ( Correct me if I am wrong) That both Charlotte and Kelly have some roll on the actual show as far as executive producers.  So if this Is the case- they knew exactly how they were editing this and  how they were taking a solo that had a meaning / message and butchering it.  Makes me wonder if this was another message or a solo by a different person - would the treatment be the same....
Let’s say they didn’t have a part in editing- you know they saw the episode prior to it airing and at the LEAST should have gone to Kristen and warned her. 
All the supportive comments on Kristen’s ig account also make me wonder if some who were NOT going to retire may change their minds.
