Promising Young Woman is... flawed.

But I'll give it this, not only is it an aesthetically gorgeous film, but Carey Mulligan's wardrobe is colorful and memorable. See, Hollywood wardrobe people? Other colors exist besides grey, black, and beige!

Doris Day was not only sensational in her film debut in Romance on the High Seas, but she got to sport a killer wardrobe to boot! I confess that her white dress during the "It's Magic" number  is ruined somewhat by those sloppy, unnecessary ties. Seriously, they're just distracting afterthoughts on an otherwise gorgeous ensemble (but that's just my own personal bias, since I prefer a more streamlined look).

That is a great introductory shot, so iconic. Kate Winslet is a lovely woman, but she looked especially gorgeous in Titanic, and anyone who fat-shamed her then or now can promptly go to Hell and never come back.

Exactly! That wasn't the era of low carb diets and gym memberships. Even now, a lot of men still prefer softness and curves to women who are stick thin or very muscular.

She's singing "Ten Cents a Dance" in that photo, and I really wish it were in color because it just doesn't do it justice, but here's the performance from the film. I love her hat, you can see it the best when she takes her bow at the end.

I’ve always loved this ballgown from MFL.

Audrey could thrown on a paper sack and look stunning. That Givenchy gown in Sabrina is amazing.

Edith Head designed Sabrina as well as Roman Holiday and Funny Face. She also did one of my all time favorites, To Catch a Thief.

 

 

The entire masquerade ball is amazing.

Sorry, no, as much as I love all the photos here, I must correct this misconception.  Hubert de Givenchy is the genius behind those stunning dresses we remember in Sabrina.  The wardrobe after Sabrina returns from Paris are Givenchy that Hepburn selected herself because when Hepburn had first approached Givenchy to design costumes for her in Sabrina, he was unable to commit time to the project. Instead he gave her the run of the rails and she picked a few choice numbers, including a memorable white strapless gown with black embroidery and a double skirt.  

Hepburn requested that Givenchy design all her future costumes, starting with Funny Face.

Edith Head does deserve all the kudos for To Catch a Thief and Rear Window, but not the other two.

I noted in my post that the dress in the photo was Givenchy. There are more costumes in both films than just those two.

Yes, you did.  A re read of my post I see how it came off a tad harsh/snarky, my apologies.  I was reacting to the fact that Edith Head took credit for all the designs in Sabrina without acknowledging Givenchy’s contributions.

I think Edith Head deserves every bit of hype because it's not just that she designed pretty stuff, but she understood the character she was designing for, and how the costumes illustrated their arc. For instance, in The Heiress, Olivia de Havilland plays a shy, awkward (but wealthy) woman in 1849 New York who is hardly a fashion plate, and Head's designs reflect that. Catherine's fashions are of their time, but they're duller and dowdier than most young women would wear, and there's her formal gown in the beginning that's just too busy for her demure nature. Then there's Catherine's fabulous dress at the end (with that great cameo necklace and earring set!) that she dons as her story comes full circle.

Thank you for that analysis of costume design.  I heard or read at some point that color scheme of Grace Kelly’s gowns in TCaT were supposed to reflect her character’s changing emotional relationship to Cary Grant.

I don’t know if that story is what was the actual design or what the reviewer was seeing.  Her casual every day clothes do not follow that pattern.  And as an aside, I still do not know what was so startling about her black and white beach outfit other than it was something she knew would draw everyone’s eyes.

I also remember from a TCM intro it was pointed out that the costume of the character of Danielle was designed to mirror Robie’s character down to the part in her/his hair.

I really hated to delete the other photos but I wanted to focus on these two for Jesse Royce Landis.  I love how fabulous she looks in this movie.  I especially like the peignoir set she has in the break in scene.  Though the focus is meant for Grace Kelly, see how she is in beige in the casino scene which is fabulous with her red hair, she doesn’t fade into the background.  She more than holds her own, she complements her daughter.   We can see it again in the ball scene with the gold and blue gowns.  And not just any blue but a deep rich jewel tone sapphire.  What better to complement gold?

 (I just noticed how the color families are reversed from the casino scene.  Can’t help but wonder if that was a deliberate choice.)

I love both blue gowns.  I can only dream of the sapphire jewelry JRL is draped in.  I can not be the only one who wishes there was a feature of just the gowns from this scene.  All the costumes are amazing, including the ones for the servers, that I just wanted to see all of them in detail.

JRL is one my favorite character actresses right up there with Thelma Ritter.  She makes her most of her small role in Airport .   It was no surprise that Edith Head was the costume designer for that movie.  I was surprised that IMDb does not list Edith Head as the costume designer for NxNW, the other famous “mother” role for JRL.  Does anyone know the story there?
