Here's the trailer.  It looks better than Season 1.

And it looks like Devi has been binging Friends because

Spoiler

apparently she pulls out Ross's pro/con list idea when he was trying to decide between Rachel and Julie.  She goes for both but I suspect will end up with neither in the immediate aftermath.

About the casting of relatively older Darren Benet as Paxton:

Quote

…co-creator Lang Fisher told News Week:…"You can't ask someone how old they are when they audition. You just have to assume that they're a reasonable age. I don't think we found out what his age was until we were deep in the season and then we were like, 'Oh, OK.' I assumed he was, like, 20. And…, when you see an actual 15-year-old boy, they're just not going to be a heartthrob. They look like a tiny baby." hellomagazine.com/film/20210720117865/never-have-i-ever-fans-react-darren-barnet-real-age/

I don't understand why you can't ask people how old they are when they audition.  Casting calls are written with specifics like "actors between the ages of X and Y."

On a committee to hire a new librarian, the director said he wanted someone young. He then immediately followed up with: “That doesn’t leave this room!”
But in librarian job adverts, “energetic” is code for “young.”

But for acting, ageism lawsuits probably cannot be based on listing the age range for the character on a casting call, but do prevent asking the actor’s age.

Also, since they wanted a more mature looking actor for the teen “heartthrob,” maybe the range was 18-28, which Benet could have easily been on the day he auditioned.

Or maybe it was 18-25. I’ve read that within 10 years is considered okay.

I wish we could see the casting call for his role. Based on the interview above, it sounds like they did list the age range for Paxton as older than, say, Ben —which, in hindsight, they probably shouldn’t have done. Better to list it as 14-24 or whatever and add the word “mature.”

Anyway, it seems they could avoid showing hi-def of his wrinkles with the right lighting or even minimal CGI if he doesn’t want to risk Botox.

I mean, WE can see he looks too old for Devi. Didn't they do any kind of screen test with both in the same scene? You don't have to ASK, you can just LOOK.

I'm guessing 2 years ago he looked younger, and I'm guessing if there was a read with Darren Barnet and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan that the chemistry was what they were hoping for.

Oh man "energetic."  I got that because I wasn't in my 20s even though I was still rather young.

But I digress. Ageism laws protect people over 40.  Hunky 29 year olds aren't part of a protected class related to age.

I don't understand why everyone acts like Paxton is some haggard old age-spotty wrinkly cryptkeeper. No, he doesn't really look particularly teenaged, but actors on the sorts of teen shows with sex plotlines almost never do. Even the actors who actually are teens are rarely the young-looking teens, and if they are they are playing even younger roles. Also high schoolers can look really different. Some still look like they're ten, and some could easily pass for 30.

Maybe it bothers me less because I watch on my tablet, not a massive screen, so I don't see every microscopic detail, but I also know some real high schoolers with crinkles around the eyes already and more sun damage than they should have.

I don't think he's haggard but he looks about 25 to Devi's looking about 15. If he weren't her love interest I wouldn't be bothered, but seeing them together it is just kind of cringy.

He's a very attractive twenty-something who looks like a twenty-something, not a teenager. It'd almost make more sense if they'd had him be a student teacher Devi had a huge crush on. He just can't pull off high school student. I'm curious who all went to the casting call that he was the one they chose.

He's actually 30 and he looks 30 imo. I actually prefer 20 somethings playing teens but 30 is really pushing it imo, especially since he's not a very young looking 30. On top of that, they hired an actual teen to play Devi, so the age difference is very obvious and it squicks me out.

I just can't believe there were no super attractive, mixed race actors under 25 that could have played Paxton. The actor isn't special enough imo nor does he have lightning-in-a-bottle chem with Devi, so it just makes no sense to me that he was cast.

He's not half-Asian (though didn't they only write that in afterwards once Darren was cast?), but Felix Mallard from Ginny and Georgia recently showed up on my Instagram feed and I think someone like him would've been better to cast against Maitrey/Devi. He can do brooding and moody and cool, but still has a baby face that helps him look younger. And he's actually only 23 so similar to the rest of the cast. He is playing high schoolers a lot more convincingly than (sorry) Darren. He just doesn't look as mature, but in a good way.

"Never Have I Ever" Renewed for a Fourth and Final Season

· Season 3 has wrapped production and will return this Summer 2022.

· Season 4 will be the final season and premiere in 2023.

I'm glad they set a definite end and didn't try to drag it out. I wish all shows based on high school characters would take note.

Heh, if they did that, there'd be infinite Darren jokes based on the 2 Darrens of Bewitched.

I would complain. I love Darren Barnet as Paxton. He’s supposed to look older than the average high school senior. Grown women drool over him. I wouldn’t want to see anyone else in that role.

And he and Devi are supposed to look like they don’t quite fit. And yet they’ve grown to really like each other.

I know they are playing teens and I feel gross saying it, but who’s the cute new Desi guy? I hope not another love interest for Devi since she has enough on her plate.

Interesting article. Spoilers through S3, Ep.9.

How ‘Never Have I Ever’ Gave Us 2 Wonderfully Different South Asian Moms

The two actors (Poorna Jagannathan and Sarayu Blue) have been friends for a while, as part of a tight-knit and supportive community of South Asian actors in Hollywood, according to Jagannathan. Each said they were thrilled to finally get the chance to work together.

“We’re so used to, like, if there’s one Indian in a series, there’s just no room for another one. That’s the world that we come from,” Jagannathan said. “And suddenly, there’s a show with so many South Asians, so many people of color, so much diversity. And then suddenly, there’s two South Asian women, not only together, but in the dynamic of a friendship.”

‘Never Have I Ever’ Boss On Surprise Season 3 Cliffhanger & What It Means For The Future

Not so sure how I feel about a lot of the stuff in that article. Some of the things they mention seem very much a step backwards, as much as they want to pretend it's forward progress.

I have to take this interview with a healthy dose of salt. Isn't season 4 in the can already? And even if it isn't, why is he so vague about John McEnroe being in it, and why wouldn't he be? - they would've nailed this down when Netflix announced the final 2 seasons.

Considering the change in Devi by the end of season 3 I could see them choosing to change the narrator for the final season. Or to have multiple narrators now that all of the characters are more fleshed out.
Season 4 did finish filming earlier this month but the narration is probably done during post production.

I can’t imagine another narrator. It is difficult to narrate the inner workings of a teenager (see how awful Gigi Hadid was in Paxton’s episode), but John nails it. I also thought Adam did very well in the Ben episodes, but not having John narrate the final season wouldn’t feel right.

And to whomever mentioned that Adele should narrate a Trent episode, I am here for that.

Adele would be funny..i was think Helen Mirren or Emma Thompson but Adele would work too. Another part would be annoyed if we got Trent but not Eleanor and Fabiola.

Who should do the narration on an Eleanor or Fabiola episode? An old, curmudgeonly, thespian for Eleanor? Or William Shatner would be fun.
Fabiola's might be some Stephen Hawking style, robot voice? Or someone really quirky for juxtaposition's sake?

Because there are only so many episodes they can do in the last season, I doubt we will get all the VOs we want. Since they seem to only have one episode per season, I wonder who they picked. I wish this show was longer (both episode and seasons) because there are so many wonderful characters on the show and not nearly enough of time to tell their stories.

I took the vagueness to be about John McEnroe appearing in it physically again, not whether or not he'd be narrating it.
