Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads
riley702 replied to Lola16's topic in Commercials
The article said gross. I can't find that article again today, but this one has many of the same numbers. "Last year (2011 - this article is from 2012), Papa John’s International captured $1.218 billion in revenue. Total operating expenses were $1.131 billion." http://www.forbes.com/sites/calebmelby/2012/11/12/breaking-down-centi-millionaire-papa-john-schnatters-obamacare-math/ -
Well, that's one way to drum up some business.

Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads

Yep, he's a douche-bag. He said he couldn't wouldn't provide health insurance for his employees because it would cost an extra 10-15 cents per pizza. This, from a company whose gross profits were approx. $100 MILLION in 2013, the last year for which I could find figures. I actually e-mailed him after that comment, telling him that he had blown a golden opportunity for positive press without cutting into his earnings. All he had to do was announce he was raising the price of each pizza by 25 cents, in order to provide health coverage for his employees, and that he was sure people wouldn't mind paying an extra quarter to do so much good, and that it was just the right thing to do, dammit. I got the standard form letter thanking me for writing to them. -
Mmm, bacon! I'm livin' the dream. God, I love America. (I'm being only somewhat facetious).

Yep. He's just slurring the words together. I understood him perfectly, as I tend to do it myself. I'm blaming my southern Indiana accent, which is apparently so different from the rest of the Midwest that a lady at Cedar Point (Sandusky, OH) once wanted to know where I was from. -
Sierra would look better if she plucked her naturally light brows, as I think she has tattooed brows. I seem to remember in a previous season - Vanuatu? - the women sitting around and using their fingernails to pluck each others brows. Can you use an advantage after you've been voted out? I would assume it would be like getting voted out with an idol in your pocket. You can't stand up from the jury and hand off an idol; your game-playing part of the season is over.

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
riley702 replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
Umm, survival in the wild is comparable to survival in captivity? That's not a good thing. Animals in captivity usually have significantly longer life spans because they aren't exposed to predators, are treated for illnesses and don't have to scrounge for food. If the stresses from captivity are equal to or exceeding stresses in the wild, you're not doing a good job. And yes, I hate those droopy dorsals, too. I know they've speculated it's caused by not enough room (which is bad enough), but I always think the animal has given up on life. I've noticed that recently, Sea World has gone out of their way to avoid showing those fins in ads and promo spots. -
True, but that involved all of them. This was strictly between Peachy and Will. I don't believe for a moment that Jeff didn't know about the shit-storm back at camp, and knew there were people angry with Will, so when Will proposed his deal, Probst thought of a way to screw that up while increasing the negative feelings that were already there. That's why Probst is an asshole. He can't just let the game happen; he has to insert himself and stir shit because he believes we love this stuff.
-
Since when did they let people give back an auction item to get their money back? Since when did they draw rocks for an item everyone wants? Before, it was whomever yelled out their bid first. Since when did a "side deal" with Jeff require a unanimous vote from everyone else? This episode was horrible. And Probst thinks it's the bestest evah? These people are all horrible. Even you, Shirin. I hate that "I'm a victim, so I automatically smell like roses and win the argument." You did attack Will's integrity after chowing down on the stuff he shared with you. I think if she had apologized or even threw Mike under the bus, he wouldn't have lost his damned mind. But she sits there all "I have no idea what you're talking about." Was Will wrong? Oh hell, yes! Was Shirin some poor innocent victim? Not really. You play with fire, you get burned. Occasionally you piss off somebody with a scorched-earth approach to verbal arguments. I hate everyone, especially Jeff, for thinking this would be fun and exciting. It was like watching a bloody car wreck, with Probst on the sidelines chortling and eating popcorn, saying "Isn't this great? Can you believe that? Oh wow, look at the blood!" Asshole.
-
Yes, and then all of the backstabbers looking oh, so surprised that he called them out on it? Very ugly of them, but he's the horrible person? Who told him, anyway? I forget. I didn't like anybody tonight.

Gah! "Yesterday" is NOT a stadium anthem! And none of the judges pointed out that little fact to Clark, instead slobbering all over him. Yes, it was a nice rendition, yes he has a nice voice, but geez-o-pete, if he can't project any energy even for an alleged stadium anthem... He is as dull as dishwater. I can't stand him. Glad to hear they're stopping the stupid Twitter vote after tonight. "Light My Fire" is more like it! And perfect for Quentin, although I was waiting for him to bust loose and start belting, but alas... Hated JLo saying that, though, since she didn't have a problem with Clark's dull singing. How many times has Rayvon sung Sam Smith now? Seems like a lot. Also not a stadium anthem, although obviously these "themes" are just a suggestion if they like you. Quentin sticks to the theme and gets criticized for being restrained, whilst Clark and Rayvon sang ballads and received praise. Blech. "Go Your Own Way" IS a stadium anthem type song. Color me shocked, Rayvon, although you just had to go there with that high note at the end. Nick is my favorite. I liked both of his songs. Tyanna is next and I thought she really had a good night tonight. She's been a bit uneven throughout the competition, though, and that might keep her from winning. Hate to say it, but Jax does look like she might win this thing. And as polished/plastic as she comes across, I wouldn't be unhappy with her winning. These three are the only ones I'd be OK with winning. Why is Quentin's Twitter handle QAlexanderXIV? Surely he's not the 14th Quentin Alexander. Or is he calling himself the Sun King (a la Louis XIV)? If that's it, that's kinda fun. *sigh* Of course, Rayvon wins the Twitter save yet again.

Is Blaine the first evil genius zombie? Prior to this, they've never really been known for brains being overly smart.

This. I wasn't talking about this topic specifically. I put this comment here, as it seemed to be a catch-all topic, but there's a helluva lot of it in episode threads, character threads, etc. It's a bit much, personally. I want to talk about this show, in this show's forum. It doesn't seem a lot to ask.

I do have one wee request. Not everyone here has seen (or wants to see) Veronica Mars. *ducks* I know they have the same show runner, but can we not have a reference to VM in what seems like every other post? Hashing whether this character is more like Logan, Duncan, Troy, etc. doesn't mean a damned thing to me and makes me feel like I shouldn't be here - that these threads are just for VM folks. I DO understand there will inevitably be some mentions and comparisons. Maybe just not quite so much? Please?

I'd have to agree this show has a good mix of... atmosphere, for lack of a better word. The mix of gore, humor and feels reminds me of Buffy and it's a combo I like very much. There are plenty of deadly serious shows, there are plenty of "Oh, the angst!" shows and there are plenty of comedies. Remember Millennium? At first, I really liked it, but after a while, it was just so unrelentingly bleak that I had to bail. I don't want this show to go there.

iHave iQuestions: How Do Things Work in This Universe?

Interesting. I've heard this sort of thing speculated about vampire characters, too. What I find myself wondering about is why Liv eats regular food, too. It does seem to sate her physical hunger. Does she still have digestion going on, other than the need for brains regularly? I'd have to think she isn't cold to the touch, because she's touched a lot of humans who don't seem to notice anything amiss. -
What? This is Jeff Probst we're talking about, right? All he ever does is overhype.

Hot damn! *fans myself* Thank you!

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage

My first reaction was irritation with wifey acting like it would be the most horrible thing ever if he was masturbating. It's his body, lady, and it's not like there are only so many erections in his life and they all belong to you now. My second was the story of someone who got ringworm (actually a fungus) from a patient, treated it and then reinfected themselves because they'd scratched it with a wooden backscratcher, which can apparently harbor the fungus even if you think you've cleaned it. -

Public Service Announcements (Because the More You Know...)

I ended up liking it, although it's a lot heavy-handed. I was waiting for a literal smack upside the head, but forcing him to watch the destruction works, too. And I liked the little boy at the end.
