  1. Metal detectors were available before the 1960s. If the archeologists were not using them to look for objects like the sword and cross, they should at least have had a line explaining why not (cost?).
  2. What are the most difficult categories for most contestants? Opera and sports must be up there, along with some of the puzzle categories.
  3. Week 45: 3/5 + 2*. Garp was a total guess but it counts. It's stone fruit season so I'll bring fruit salad: peaches, plums, cherries, etc.
  4. RIP Bob Newhart.
  5. During the Apollo 11 mission, William Safire wrote a speech for Nixon to use in case of "mishap." Toby Ziegler would approve.
  6. That rooftop's railing is barely knee high. I'm glad Prof T stays near the middle, and I hope it doesn't get too windy up there. Glad the chairs at the conference had some space between them. Chairs like those usually have hooks that attach them together so closely that non-emaciated people cannot sit without squeezing. It looked as if Prof T's mother fell. When she is able to talk, the conversation about why she was in the attic should be interesting. ETA: Guessing that Kafka was barking more than usual, and the neighbor came to investigate and saw Mrs. T on the floor.
  7. Last week (according to Mrs. C) it was known that the church building had black mold and was a danger to people, so it was logical to shut it down, at least until the mold was removed. But if the bishop et al. planned to shut it down, they should not have assigned a new vicar. What options does Alphy have? Is he allowed to go talk to churches whose vicars are about to retire, or does he have to wait for the bishop to reassign him?
  8. "IC1 male" is an example of an IC code used by British police to describe someone's apparent ethnicity. (I'm not British so I looked it up.)
  9. The children who received the Salk polio vaccine (or a placebo) in 1954) were called Polio Pioneers.
  10. Week 44: 5/5. For "Last Alphabetically," I'll bring a variety of zucchini dishes. (Thanks, garden!)
  11. Not that it affects the outcome, but ... IMO, they should not have accepted "dark side of the moon." It may be a popular phrase but it is incorrect. ("Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg.")
  12. I hope that's Fahrenheit.
  13. 3/5, no *.
  14. They are looking for teams of three people to play Pop Culture Jeopardy! Info and link to test. Not my thing, but some folks here may be interested.
  15. So has mine. This may be an option for stations.
  16. They could at least put the text in the closed captions, but they don't bother.
  17. The dean(?) said in court that the replacement professor was not good, so possibly Jasper may get his position back. On the other hand, the administration may be satisfied with a professor who doesn't make waves, even if he doesn't teach well.
  18. Doesn't the church have an administrative person to handle finances, correspondence, etc.? Someone should have been there to show Alphy where things are, the schedule, etc.
  19. Today's TV schedule showed this: Jeopardy! 05-09-2023 Season 39, Episode 172 Three contestants play a different kind of trivia quiz hosted by Ken Jennings. Whoever scores the highest after a series of quizzes will get the chance to play the bonus round for bigger prizes. It sounded like some variant game, but it was an ordinary Jeopardy game, hosted by Mayim Bialyk. Possibly whoever wrote the description had never watched the show.
  20. Week 42: glad Cat knew where her towel was. I got 3/5 + 1 *. Today I said Anne Sullivan.
  21. FJ for me came down to "Who wrote Ozymandias?" but I remembered in time. Re Maryl's interview, I once had the 1812 overture stuck in my head (cannons and all) and got an awful headache. I do like the piece, especially as performed by the Boston Pops, even though it has nothing to do with American independence.
  22. Week 41: 2/5 (Monday & Wednesday), or 3/5 if the tiebreaker counts. No *. Thursday I said Zelda Fitzgerald, and today I didn't know what they were asking for, so I was in good company.
  23. For that General Science clue: The ant has made herself illustrious By constant industry industrious. So what? Would you be calm and placid If you were full of formic acid? --Ogden Nash
  24. I can't let a discussion of football fight songs go by without mentioning Tom Lehrer's Fight Fiercely, Harvard!
  25. Week 40: 4/5. YTD: 134/200, 18 *.
