  1. They may have spent more time talking about the Pony Express than the time it actually lasted. It operated for 18 months, from April 1860 to October 1861, when it was superseded by the transcontinental telegraph.
  2. Georgetown is at least planning "to acknowledge and respond to its historical ties to the institution of slavery." The university has established an archive of "materials relating to the Maryland Jesuits, Georgetown University, and slavery."
  3. If you are in the US and descend from certain early immigrants, their descent from royalty is well documented. One example is Thomas Dudley (~1577-1653) who was a governor of Massachusetts. Charlemagne is sometimes known as Chuck the Prolific.
  4. What was the space game? The clue mentioned going to the center of the galaxy but I couldn't hear the name of the game.
  5. from "He Shall from Time to Time: President Josiah Bartlet: I came to this hallowed chamber one year ago on a mission, to restore the American dream for all our people as we gaze at the vast horizon of possibilities open to us... in the 321st century. Wow, that was ambitious of me, wasn't it? Sam Seaborn: Leo. Leo McGarry: Let's take a break. President Josiah Bartlet: We meant stronger here right? Sam Seaborn: What's it say? President Josiah Bartlet: I'm proud to report our country's stranger than it was a year ago. Sam Seaborn: That's a typo. President Josiah Bartlet: Could go either way.
  6. You don't want to tempt the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing!
  7. IIRC the hospital is in San Jose. I saw an interview with a man who had received a face transplant a year earlier. It did not look nearly as good as Molly's at the end of this episode. The doctors said the transplant was very successful, and the patient had had a lot of therapy, but it would continue to improve for another year or more. It takes a long time for all the nerves etc. to adjust.
  8. About it being "bad" to be born at certain times -- IIRC, in China at some time a girl born in the year of the horse was considered unfortunate in some way, so the birth rate was lower during that year.
  9. Article about Dr. Snow and the Broad Street pump.
  10. Some of us were talking about a former boss who was a "quiet drunk." One said "I don't think I ever saw him drunk." Another said "You probably never saw him sober."
  11. Cool. Maybe we should do some synchronized buzzer punching drills so we all look good.
  12. Saber5055 -- How many of us are playing?
  13. 4/5 this week. Popular music is one of my "gap" categories.
  14. Yes, I kept expecting Howard to do something clever, but instead it was Sheldon and the bureaucrats (band name?). Leonard with glowing eyes was fun. But I hope he gets a win against Sheldon before the series ends.
  15. Isaac could look human only in the not-holodeck. I initially thought he and Claire went to her quarters, but apparently it was another manifestation of the not-holodeck. Which made them less likely to be interrupted by her kids. And Ed did not zip past the window. I would have ROFL if human-Isaac had looked like Ben Sisko (Deep Space Nine).
  16. Did Isaac say how he made himself look like a human male? Presumably the human male we saw is the actor who wears the Isaac outfit. Isaac has not learned enough about humans if he doesn't know that Gordon and Lamarr are the last ones he should ask about relationships (next to Yaphit).
  17. If you would like to expand on this, some of us would enjoy seeing your comments. The new WKRP thread is in "Other W Shows."
  18. I love real 100% maple syrup, preferably grade B (more flavor than A). If real maple syrup is not available, I use molasses. No fake syrup. There is a story (maybe true) of a family who had several maple trees. They collected gallons of sap, put it in big pots on the kitchen stove, and boiled it for several days. Then all the wallpaper in the house fell down.
  19. Milo Ventimiglia is Harvard's Hasty Pudding Man of the Year
  20. I did exactly the same thing, but luckily stuck with her anyway.
  21. Article about the real world inspiration for the turkey drop.
  22. At least one national network news broadcast covered the Boston molasses disaster on its 100th anniversary.
  23. Before we saw the FJ clue, I thought FJ might be about the Boston Molasses Disaster, which was 100 years and a few days ago.
  24. I call the Mac command key "pretzel" and have heard "windmill." My MacBook Pro does not have a backspace key; it's labeled "delete."
